Okay, this takes the sting out of the Repunzel title change – here’s some awesome Disney news…

Walt Disney Pictures has decided to give the documentary “Waking Sleeping Beauty” a limited theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco on March 26, 2010. In New York, the film will open at the Landmark Sunshine. In Los Angeles, the film will open on two screens, at the AMC Century City and AMC Burbank. In Chicago, the film will open at the AMC River East and in San Francisco at the Landmark Embarcadero all on March 26, 2010.

Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairytale. It is a story of clashing egos, out of control budgets, escalating tensions… and one of the most extraordinary creative periods in animation history.

Director Don Hahn and producer Peter Schneider, key players at Walt Disney Studios Feature Animation department during the mid1980s, offer a behind-the-magic glimpse of the turbulent times the Animation Studio was going through and the staggering output of hits that followed over the next ten years. Artists polarized between the hungry young innovators and the old guard who refused to relinquish control, mounting tensions due to a string of box office flops, and warring studio heads create the backdrop for this fascinating story told with a unique and candid perspective from those that were there. Through interviews, internal memos, home movies, and a cast of characters featuring Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy Disney, alongside an amazing array of talented artists that includes Don Bluth, John Lasseter, and Tim Burton, Waking Sleeping Beauty shines a light on Disney Animation’s darkest hours, greatest joys and its improbable renaissance.

Producer Roy Conli of Walt Disney Animation Studios’s 2010 “Rapunzel” has been retitled “Tangled”. Roy Conli explained the reason for the change on his Facebook page:

“Hey everyone, I’m Roy Conli, producer of Disney’s next animated film. I have some exciting news to share, and it was important to me that YOU guys – the Disney fans – hear it first. I want to tell you about Walt Disney Animation Studio’s 2010 release, Tangled. It’s a really fresh, smart take on the Rapunzel story. In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. We’re having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who’s seen it all, with Rapunzel, who’s been locked away in a tower for 18 years. I’m so proud of the crew working on this film – they’re doing a fantastic job creating an awesome story with great characters and a stunning world – and it’s all going to look amazing in 3D. All of us here at the studio are incredibly excited for you to see Tangled when it comes out in theaters this November.”

Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno with our lead heroine voiced by Mandy Moore while Chuck’s Zachary Levi will play a bandit named Flynn Ryder.

Tangled is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on November 24th 2010.

~Source~

Cybergosh reaction: “Rapunzel” is a classic, classy title. “Tangled” is Dreamworksy and ridiculous. Shame on John Lasseter for permitting this.

Tron: Legacy director/most awesome man on the planet Joseph Kosinski told MTV some more Black Hole plans in early January…

“It won’t be a sequel like Tron. This one will be a reimagining. For me, it would be taking ideas and iconic elements that struck me as timeless and cool and preserving them while weaving a new story around them that’s a little more 2001. We’ve got a really strong idea and concept for the film. The title alone has tremendous amount of potential. We’ve got a really talented writer on it named Travis Beecham. We’re just getting started on the script in the next few months.”

As for how faithful the new film will be to the original, Kosinski explained:

“I saw Black Hole as a little kid. What sticks out most is the robot Maximilian. The blades and the vicious killing of Anthony Perkins. That freaked me out and that’s definitely going to be an element that will be preserved. The design of the Cygnus ship is one of the most iconic spaceships ever put to film. From a conceptual point of view, we know so much more about black holes now, the crazy things that go on as you approach them due to the intense gravitational pull and the effects on time and space. All that could provide us with some really cool film if we embrace it in a hard science way.”

The more I read about this Kosinski, the more I learn to love life.

While promoting his Percy jackson, Chris Columbus spoke a bit about all the recent Gremlins talk…”I spoke to Steven Spielberg a couple days ago and said, ‘You know, I’ve been reading on the internet about this ‘Gremlins 3D’ and no one’s approached him either, so I don’t know if that’s really true.”

…However….

“It would be fun to go back and revisit (them). Something like Gremlins, which is a movie I really like, I think it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.”

How great would it be for Ghostbusters 3 and Gremlins 3 to both open on June 8, 2011?!!
