Those opting for that optional, hourly-supervised feature, will be overviewed by contractors to make sure they actually work in those paid hours, and not browse Facebook. This is accomplished through the use of an interesting screenshot system, which instantly sends captures of the freelancer display. Dangerous? Well, not for the serious.

oDesk also comes with a simple, but nice feedback system, which helps contractors distinguish between trustworthy or bad clients. This feature also store historical events and other work-related details, such as the entire money figure gathered online.

Demand Media

A good place for writers, editors, filmmakers and experts of all kinds is without doubt Demand Media. But, once you get pass these things and have the patience to deeply scan the market, you will surely find something worthy.

Freelance Switch

A spam-free source of finding brand new jobs is also Freelance Switch. Although their job board environment is not as crowded, usually there are around 10 new jobs every week, aiming mostly people in the web-design and content production area.

I’ve always though of Freelance Switch as a tricky place, especially for those hunting projects often. With highly paid jobs and interesting thing to work on in the tech or IT sphere, there’s always a catch; and in our case, it’s a premium access fee, worth $7 each month.

Anyone wishing to apply for a job posted here must pay $7 each month, a subscription which renews itself automatically. Besides this premium membership, users gain access to a helpful blog, forum and eBook but most importantly, to a low-competition medium. Those who get hired may face another downfall, as billing occurs automatically and usually involves a lot of paperwork.

Piece of advice: browse the existing entries, before purchasing membership.

Craiglist

Yes, that weird minimalist looking website which people use each day for selling or purchasing seldom goods is perhaps one of the best places to find a freelancing position. As many sources point out, Craiglist can truly offer projects for people working in different niches, but you will have to do some research first.

Once arriving at the homepage, you will have to click on a relevant city (New York or Barcelona lets say) and then choose a relevant domain, from the Jobs section. Here you can find anything related to writing, programming and designing, so you will certainly have your hands full for a week or two. When you’re done scouting, try the Gigs area too; there are some relevant mentions there also.

The bad part about Craiglist is that hunting must be done city by city, for each continent. While there are more chances you could score a deal for a English-written website when searching in USA, don’t leave other zones like Europe, Australia or Asia unexplored. Also, when you do find a job, pay close attention to the job description, before submitting a request.

Another impediment might be the sheer number of opened positions, which can sometimes be overwhelming. Try browsing for requests posted in the past few weeks, and leave the old ones to dust.

• People Per Hour – another great place to start looking for a gig is People Per Hour, a website that usually indulges projects from all over the world. There are tons of projects starting each day so if you are interested, give it a swirl. Everything’s free.
• Project4Hire – a rather small source for freelancing which is somewhat similar to Elance, this website allows people to post jobs in a couple of minutes. Also, those on the other camp can find a buck or two, but not too much.

Besides the cloud feature, this service also offers a free solution to create and save Word documents. To do this, just follow these steps:

1. Open your desired browser and go to Google. If you are not already signed in with the Google account, press “Sign in” button on top of the right page.
2. Now, access the “Drive” section from the top of the screen which will direct you to the Google Drive menu.
3. Click on the “Create” button and a sub-menu will pop-up with different document types: “folder”, “document”, “spreadsheet”, “presentation”, ”drawing” and ”form”.
4. Select “Document” and a blank page will appear. Begin writing and from time to time the document will be automatically saved to your Google Drive account.

To rename the created document, just click on the “Untitled document” title at the top of the page or just press “Rename” under “File” menu. To download or to preview and revise your document, just go back to your Google Drive account.

2. Docs.com

Microsoft launched their online Office alternative with Facebook integration to come to users’ help. While the Microsoft Word rules the offline world, this new service, which is still in the beta phase, tries to offer that portability that everyone needs, letting people create documents, presentations or spreadsheets online. Let’s begin the simple guide to discover how to create a new document:

1. Go to Docs.com website and sign in with the Facebook account. As far as now, the only sign-in possibility is with the Facebook account, but in the future they will probably implement Yahoo! and Google as alternatives.
2. At the top of the screen a menu with four options will appear: “Home”, “My Docs”, “Friend’s Docs” and “Add a Doc”. Please select the latter.
3. Now, a similar Word interface should come up, in which you can create a document simply by typing and it will be saved in your account.

Docs also offers a spelling check and the possibility to open the document that was just created in the offline Microsoft Word application, if it is installed on that computer. All in all, it is a good solution when somebody needs portability and easiness of writing a document.

3. Zoho Writer

Zoho Writer is a complex word online processor which is very easy to use and that has incredible features. This application allows to create and save documents on every account and to access them later from any computer or location. Writer is part of the Zoho Docs which also contains Spreadsheets and Presentations, direct correspondents to Microsoft’s Excel and PowerPoint.

Besides the basic options, such as italic, bold or underline text, it offers the capability of changing text to lower case, upper case or to capitalize it. Moreover, in Zoho Writer links can be created, headers or footers can be added or even photos can be inserted. The presence of the equation editor is also very useful, especially for professors, students and engineers.

Another interesting feature is the real time editing implementation which offers users the possibility to collaborate on a document with colleagues. A different color is assigned to each user that is currently working on the file, in order to see who makes changes and to ease up the whole process. To start using this free application, one will just have to create a free account. This type of account its known as Personal account and permits to upload 1 GB of documents, while the other two options, Standard and Premium, offer 2 GB, respective 5GB for prices of $3 or $5 per month.

The greatness doesn’t stop here because Zoho has apps for Android and iOS devices, allowing users to access and edit their documents through phone.

4. ThinkFree

Thinkfree is a free online word processor that is designed to store your documents online so that they can be accessed from every computer with an internet connection. Moreover, this service offers the possibility to create Office documents within the browser.

To access ThinkFree just visit their website and create an account or use your Google account to sign in. The interface is very similar to the Thinkfree Word application from the ThinkFree Office, which resembles Microsoft’s own Word 2003 edition.

The account is free and allocates 1 GB of cloud space to your documents and with ThinkFree Power Tool, all documents from the computer can be synced automatically to the online account. Also, developers have created special applications for mobile Android and iOS devices that allow users to view or email their documents from their phone.

5. Shutterb.org

You should also take a look at Shutterb.org which is an online word processor that permits to create and save documents with only some clicks. When you first visit the site you are asked either to open an existing document or to start a new one from scratch. Its simplicity stays in the fact that it doesn’t offer you storage for documents and it doesn’t ask for an account, just creates a new document on the spot. All files can be saved locally in a .doc or .pdf format. As for features, Shutterb.org has only basic functionality, such as change font, color, alignment and so forth.

Well, lots of ignored contacts and an almost filled inbox, we might say.

In the first case, you can simply delete the spam message from the inbox or create a filter for that domain that sent it, but in the other case? It is not so easy to check dozens of spam emails that are received every day.

Protect Important Emails and keep them out of Spam

Today, you will learn how to tweak the settings of any email address and even use a couple of applications that manage email accounts so that you will not lose any important notification to the spam folder. This is a small step by step tutorial for the most well-known emailing services, Google and Yahoo, and can be applied to most intelligent browsers out there.

Yahoo

A small trick which every Yahoo! Mail user can enjoy is to create a simple filtering rule. With this rule, people have the possibility of marking certain messages as important or send them directly to SPAM.

1. Log into your account and click on the “Settings” button and then on “Mail Options”.
2. Go to the “Filters” category that is placed on the left side of the page and press the “Create or edit filters” link.
3. Choose a name for the filter and then the criteria desired. You can choose to filter messages by “Sender”, “Recipient”, “Subject” and “Body”. When you finish you will have to save it.
4. After selecting on which bases an email should be filtered, choose what happens when a message is detected by the filter. You have the option of automatically moving that messages inside the Inbox, Spam, Trash or a new folder at all.

Gmail

The same tactic may also be applied on Google Mail, where we are going to create a filter for multiple purposes. This is just to make sure we do receive email from a specific contact, because Gmail already comes with an almost bullet-proof system of categorizing messages. This system learns what kind of emails are important for the user and which one should be ignored. Well, if you’re having troubles with that, here’s what you can do:

1. Navigate to Google Mail and click on the “Gear Icon” button. The button is placed on the top-right side of the page.
2. Further select “Settings” from the drop down menu.
3. Choose “Filters” and then “Create a new filter”. This is the most important step you will have to make. In the field “From” you have to put the friend’s email address. If you do not know it, it is not a problem, because Gmail has thought at this too. You can put his name or even his nickname. You can also enter multiple addresses, but only if they are separated by the word “OR” or by the sign “|”.
4. After you managed to add all you addresses you will press on the “Create filter with this Search” button. After that pop-up menu will appear, where you can choose a lot of options like: “Mark as read”, “Star it”, “Forward it” and lastly, the one that interests us: “Never send it to Spam”. After that press “Create filter” and that is it. You can be sure from now that the emails are not sent to the spam folder.

For those that are using special applications for checking and sending emails, like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, these are some things you need to know.

Microsoft Outlook

Developed by Microsoft, Outlook can be used online or locally, through the Microsoft Office suite. This application is very handy because it is realized like a Microsoft Word document, so it is very easy to use it. Even filtering.

You will only have to right-click on the email in question and select the “Junk” option. A menu will pop up and you will have to choose “Never Block Sender” or “Never Block Sender’s Domain”. After following these quick actions, Outlook will treat the sender or the domain kingly, by making sure it will never end up in Spam without user approval.

Of course the system isn’t flawless, but you are able to create your own filters to improve general experience. To do this, simply browse to “Rules and Alerts” from the “Tools” menu and define the rule by selecting specific addresses, domains and so on. Outlook also gives users a couple of interesting options, like selecting when to check messages with pre-defined filters (at departure or when the arrive) and, in which folders should detected messages be sent.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Free to use, the main advantage of Mozilla Thunderbird, an email client in essence, is that you can manage multiple emails and news feed accounts on the same interface. This is very useful and you can also add a lot of plugins to a program that can actually be used even as a browser. But, let’s return to our problem.

The filtering problem exists here, too. To create a filter in Thunderbird, you need to open a message and click on the sender’s name or email address. After that choose from the newly appeared menu “Create filter from” and select your desired rule, action. You can redirect the message to your favorite folder and choose as a filter even the date of the emails.

In my opinion, Mozilla Thunderbird is the best option you have. I use it and it is very fast. The big advantage is that I can manage my email accounts, the one from Yahoo and the one from Gmail, at the same time, and from the same interface.

Google sure isn’t giving up on its Chromebook initiative, even though it’s not clear that the company’s Chrome OS-based laptops are selling all that well. Today, Google announced that it’s expanding its brick-and-mortar retail efforts for Chromebooks through partnerships with Walmart and Staples.

Over 1,500 Staples will feature them starting this weekend and about 2,800 Walmart stores will carry Chromebooks later this summer. In total, Google says, this will triple the number of stores that carry its Chromebooks and bring the total number to 6,600 stores around the world.

Walmart, it seems, will only make the cheapest Chromebook — the $199 Acer Chromebook — available on its shelves, though. Staples will feature “a mix of Chromebooks from Acer, HP and Samsung” and will also make them available online. The more expensive Pixel, Google’s high-end Chromebook, won’t be available at any of these retailers, it seems.

The company also announced that select Office Depot, Office Max, Fry’s and Tiger Direct locations will begin selling Chromebooks in the “coming months.” Previously, only Amazon and Best Buy carried Google’s laptops.

Expansion Outside Of The U.S.

Google is also expanding the availability of Chromebooks internationally. In the U.K., for example, 116 Tesco stores are now selling Chromebooks; in the Netherlands, Mediamarkt and Saturn will carry them and France’s FNAC stores will also get Chromebook displays. Google is also adding partners in Australia (JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman) and Sweden (Elgiganten).

Of course, there are other ways to speed up computers, without using other programs, but those require money to be invested, such as buying more RAM, or buying a SSD drive, or even installing Windows 8, that has really revamped its boot up process, now taking much less time than what it used to (but with all of this innovation, some users still want to downgrade to Windows 7).

Tricks to Boot up PC Faster

Of course, the biggest improvement on any PC will be to add more computing power, but to change the components requires some technical knowledge and it can cost quite a lot. By using optimization programs and implementing some simple tricks, you can make your computer much more responsive and faster. We’ll start tuning your PC from the bottom up, and the lowest level you have is the motherboard’s BIOS.

• BIOS Tricks

When you start your computer, press the BIOS key (it’s not the same for all the computers, but it usually says in the bottom of the screen “Press [key] to enter Setup”). When you have entered the BIOS, you can enable or disable some features that will allow your computer to boot faster.

Note: Not all BIOS versions are the same, some have different menus or features, do some research on your BIOS version to see what features are available for you.

One feature you can disable is Quick Power On Self-Test. What this means is that the BIOS will no longer do all the hardware and memory tests at startup, thus making it faster. Set this setting to “Fast” something similar. If your BIOS has IDE and Floppy Drive check, you can disable these if you do not use IDE drives or a Floppy drive.

• Windows Tricks

Moving on from the BIOS to the operating system, the first step here is to scan your computer for viruses. There are lots of free antivirus utilities that do an excellent job, but I would recommend buying a good antivirus also. After scanning your computer (I usually use 2-3 antivirus utilities to scan my computer), you can move on to deleting useless files and cleaning the startup process.

Some programs have the option of starting on Windows startup, but each program takes up some memory, and with the more you have, the startup of your computer has a lower speed. To disable the non essential programs, click on “Start” and the “Run”. When the Run windows opened, type ”msconfig”. The Msconfig utility is a Windows integrated tool that allows you to remove startup programs. In the main window, click on “Startup” and you will see a list of startup programs. All you have to do is uncheck those that you do not necessarily need. Apply and exit without restart.

Note: For those who have dual boot, you can adjust the “timeout” time and the default OS from the Msconfig tool. This feature is located under the “Boot” menu.

• Cleaning the Temp files is something that might make your computer a bit faster. You should know that if your C: partition is running low on space, the performance of your computer drastically decreases. These files are temporary files that have no actual use for Windows on startup, so can delete them with no problems. There are two temp folders on your computer, you can find them here: C:\Users\[Yourusername]\AppData\Local\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp.

After doing this, you can clean your registry for entries that are not used anymore. These can really pile up after some time because each program you install creates registry entries and they are not deleted after uninstalling the program. There are lots of utilities that allow you to clean the registry of your computer, we will feature a list later on.

• Updating the drivers of your computer can have a beneficial effect on the performance of your computer and sometimes it will help it boot faster, so visit the websites of the manufacturers of your components and download the latest drives and install them.
• Defragment your drive for better seek times. We have previously discussed the benefits of defragmenting your drive, and you can also use defragmentation programs. A list of the best can be found here.
• Remove unused fonts that make your computer run slow. You usually do not use all the fonts installed on your computer, so removing some of them is a benefit. Head to Control Panel -> Fonts and right click on unused fonts and delete them.

The last thing you might want to change is the visual aspect of your desktop. This is why desktop customization apps are not recommended for slower computers, they take up RAM memory and increase the boot time of your computer. Setting your desktop background to blank or solid colors and disabling transparency for Windows can free up some memory. Also, try disabling the Windows widgets.

These are some of the tips you can use to speed up your boot time for your computer. But there are other methods to optimize a PC. There are programs that can help with the boot time of your computer. Also, they have some other optimization tools that can lend a helping hand. Here is a list of such programs:

To be clear, there was nothing stopping you from including hashtags in your Facebook content before — it’s just that they didn’t have any real functionality. In its blog post announcing the new feature, the company acknowledges that this isn’t exactly a new idea, noting that it will be “similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest” — when you click on a hashtag, you’ll get a feed of comments using the hashtag. Facebook says its capabilities will include searching for hashtags, clicking on hashtags that come from other services, and writing posts directly from the hashtag feed.

Here’s how Facebook explains the reasoning behind the addition:

Every day, hundreds of millions of people use Facebook to share their thoughts on big moments happening all around them. Whether it’s talking about a favorite television show, cheering on a hometown sports team or engaging with friends during a breaking news event—people on Facebook connect with their friends about what’s taking place all over the world. …

To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook.

Note that Facebook says it’s only “beginning to roll out” the feature, so you might not see it right away. (The company generally doesn’t turn on features for its entire user base at once, but instead rolls them out gradually.) Note also that the company says it’s going to be introducing more features in this vein.

To illustrate the scale of the conversation on Facebook, the company notes that between 88 million and 100 million Americans are using the service during primetime television hours. Game of Thrones‘ Red Wedding last week was mentioned 1.5 million times, while there were 66.5 million interactions (which include likes, comments and posts) around this year’s Oscars.

The blog post doesn’t go into something we wondered about when we started hearing about the feature in March — privacy. The idea of a “public conversation” works differently on Facebook than it does on a service like Twitter, since many Facebook posts have some degree of privacy restriction.

A company spokesperson told me that from a privacy perspective, hashtags will work similarly to Facebook Graph Search. In other words, you’ll only see the comments that you’re authorized to see. So if I include a hashtag in a friends-only post, then my friends will still be the only ones who can see it in a hashtag search.

The Internet has plenty of dark corners, but one of the darkest is surely the growing number of sites that traffic in child pornography. Google, which has no interest in surfacing any of these sites and images, has long worked with numerous nonprofit organizations and law enforcement agencies to help protect children online and keep these sites out of its index. The company has, however, recently been criticized by U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and others for not doing enough to fight child pornography online.

Google has pledged $5 million to the fight. It will distribute this money to a number of organizations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and Latin America. Among the organizations that will receive these funds are groups like the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the U.K.’s Internet Watch Foundation. Google has also set up a $2 million Child Protection Technology Fund to “encourage the development of ever more effective tools.”

It is critical that we take action as a community—as concerned parents, guardians, teachers and companies—to help combat this problem. Child sexual exploitation is a global problem that needs a global solution.

Since 2008, Google has been tagging the child abuse images it detected in its index and those that were reported to organisations like the NCMEC to ensure that it could also identify any copy of these files.

In today’s announcement, Google revealed that it has recently started to add this information to a cross-industry database that it shares with law enforcement agencies and charities. This, Google believes, will allow these organizations to “better collaborate on detecting and removing these images.”

Later this week, representatives from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook and a number of telecom firms will also meet with the U.K. Culture Secretary to discuss this issue.

It’s worth noting that Google is obviously not the only search company that is working to combat child pornography online. Microsoft has a similar initiative, and the company also tags images of child abuse it finds using its PhotoDNA technology. Facebook started licensing PhotoDNA from Microsoft in 2011. The company has also been working with a number of law enforcement agencies to develop the Child Exploitation Tracking System.

There are many terrestrial challenges to Internet connectivity—jungles, archipelagos, mountains. There are also major cost challenges. Right now, for example, in most of the countries in the southern hemisphere, the cost of an Internet connection is more than a month’s income.

Solving these problems isn’t simply a question of time: it requires looking at the problem of access from new angles. So today we’re unveiling our latest moonshot from Google[x]: balloon-powered Internet access.

Google X, the secretive lab behind projects like Google Glass and Google’s self-driving cars, announced its latest project today: balloon-powered Internet access for those areas of the earth where regular terrestrial Internet isn’t a good option. Earlier this week, Google started testing these balloons, which are meant to provide Internet access comparable to 3G networks while sailing the stratospheric winds, in New Zealand.

We had previously heard rumors about this, but just like most of Google X’s projects, this idea sounded like a long shot. Using free-flying balloons, after all, sounds like a recipe for disaster – or at least for run-away balloons.

Because the whole idea sounds a bit crazy, Google says, it’s calling this initiative “Project Loon.” Google, however, believes that it has found a way to let these balloons “sail freely on the winds” and steer them by moving them up or down to catch the right winds. This still means the team has to manage a fleet of these balloons – and the idea here is to one day have these fly these around the world. Google says it’s solving this problem “with some complex algorithms and lots of computing power.” Google uses wind data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to predict the balloons’ flight paths.

Currently, Google says it is using 30 balloons in this pilot project and about 50 testers in New Zealand are using the service on the ground. These testers have special antennas that can connect to the balloons when they are within a 20km radius.

Google, and its chairman Eric Schmidt in particular, have long been talking about the importance of getting those two-thirds of the earth’s population who don’t currently have Internet access online. Project Loon is meant to help solve this problem, Google notes. Not only could it bring Internet access to areas where today’s technologies don’t work well (jungles, archipelagos, mountains), but it seems Google also hopes that this balloon-powered network can help bring down the price of Internet access in many countries where it’s currently unaffordable for many people.

Google has launched a large update to Google Maps that adds more than 1,000 new locations from around the world to the service’s Street View feature. These include numerous locations that can’t be reached by car, including the cathedral of Seville, the canals of Copenhagen and the Singapore Zoo. Overall, it seems, this update focuses on locations from Asia, Europe, Latin America, the U.S. and Canada.

Google, of course, has long been expanding Street View’s reach beyond cities and rural streets, thanks to its backpack-like Trekker, tricycles and, most recently, its underwater Street View scooter. The update, Google says, includes numerous historical landmarks and sports stadiums, but it’s also adding some ski slopes in Chile and other relatively unusual locations to its lineup.

This large rollout hints at the fact that Google is speeding up its Street View imaging efforts. Until now, it would often announce some of these projects individually. Now, however, it’s adding a huge amount of locations from around the world in one launch, even though quite a few of them are probably a first for the Street View team.

All of this imagery, of course, is available on the web, as well as on Google Maps for Android and iPhone.

It looks like Google is shipping something to its Glass Explorer community this week. Sadly, it’s not clear what exactly it is the roughly 2,000 first Glass users are getting.

As Jesse Stay, the author of Google+ For Dummies and Google+ Marketing For Dummies, notes on his blog, a number of Glass Explorers are reporting that they have received notifications about this package through their My UPS accounts today.

These packages, which weigh about 1 lbs, are coming from Google X, the secretive Google unit responsible for exploratory project like Glass and Google’s self-driving cars.

For all we know, Google is just sending everybody a t-shirt, though some folks are speculating that they’ll get a white Nexus 4. That may be wishful thinking, but it is possible that Google has a few extra perks in store this first group of Glass users who, after all, paid around $1,500 (plus tax) for the privilege of being among the first to use Glass. My bet is on a t-shirt, though, and not on an Android phone.

Some of the Glass users were actually supposed to get their packages today, but nobody seems to have received anything yet.

We’ll obviously track this story and let you know what is in these mystery boxes once we figure it out for ourselves. Until then, feel free to speculate about the contents of this package in the comments.
