Bandcamp’s future is in doubt, here’s an alternative

It wasn’t a good omen when the corporation Epic Games acquired Bandcamp. It became evident Bandcamp’s future was in danger when Epic Games laid off hundreds of employees and sold Bandcamp to Songtradr, «an American B2B music platform that claims to facilitate brands, content creators, and digital platforms in their use of music for licensing purposes», oh, dear… Not to mention Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off in the process.

It’s supposed to be busineess as usual at Bandcamp, but they’re operating the whole site with half their staff, «most of the support team is gone now”, and workers are just trying to ‘keep the lights on’ with who’s left after the layoffs.

It was only a matter of time before alternatives started to appear. Bandcamp is one of the few ways you can directly contribute to artists online, in contrast to the predatory streaming services. So it’s an important place for artists to get support from their followers.

One of these alternatives is jam.coop:

«a new online service that allows musicians to connect with and sell music directly to their fans. We plan to have features similar to other services, such as Bandcamp, but with a crucial difference: jam.coop is a co-operative run by and for the benefit of musicians and the people who build the platform. We’re not for sale and never will be.»

The software development company working on jam.coop already operates as a worker co-operative, owned and run by the workers. You can already start selling your music on jam.coop, if you’re interested, send an email to chris@jam.coop. Check out the artist pages to see some of the music already available. They’re currently working on a lot of stuff, including support for record labels… 😉

Compilado: Make Yer Ane Comp IX

Me encantan los compilados. Aparte de conocer bandas nuevas y escuchar temas inéditos de bandas que ya conocemos, son un registro de un punto en el tiempo de la escena de la que nacen. ¿Quién no escuchó alguna vez un Punk-O-Rama o Punk-O-Nado? Conocí varias de mis bandas favoritas gracias a compilados.

Hoy estuve escuchando el último compilado de Make That A Take Records, Make Yer Ane Comp IX y está excelente. Son 65 temas disponibles en descarga digital curados por Derrick Johnston de MTAT.

Las bandas y artistas son representativos de una escena que tiene su sede en Dundee pero ignora fronteras de cualquier tipo (tanto geográficas como musicales). Tiene de todo un poco: punk rock, hardcore, cowpunk, pop punk, rock n’ roll, folk, metal, ska, hiphop, música que no sé ni cómo catalogar y más…

Hoy es un día especial para comprarlo. En Bandcamp Friday, la compañía no le cobra comisión a las bandas. ¡Lo recomiendo! De repente encuentran una de sus nuevas bandas favoritas. Make Yer Ane Comp IX en Bandcamp.

Chewie in Cork, Ireland – September 17, 2022

In September I traveled to Cork, Ireland to see Chewie. I had been looking forward to this gig for a long time. I was wanting to visit Cork, and Chewie has been one of my musical obsessions for a while. They’re on the list of my favourite bands after finding out about them on Make That A Take‘s compilations. So when they announced this gig, I decided it was my chance and bought a ticket back in June.

I had the day off at work on Friday September 16th, so I took an early flight and got to Cork early in the morning. Cork is a beautiful city! I was lucky the weather was amazing and I visited all the places I had on my list (definitely recommend Blackrock Castle Observatory). I learned more about the history of the city and Ireland, learned some Irish to complement my Scots Gaelic lessons and several pints of Beamish and Murphy’s Stout were had.

On Saturday, the gig was at Cyprus Avenue, in the center of Cork City. The first band to play was Minus Ten Thousand Hours.

Chewie started their set with «Sons and mothers», one of my favourite songs. It was an amazing show! I had the chance to talk to Stu after the show and got a Chewie t-shirt with the design from Solace, their latest «single». I think that’s supposed to be a preview of what’ll be their next album, really looking forward to that!

Book Yer Ane Fest XV

Book Yer Ane Fest XV is happening the last weekend of November. It’s a benefit music festival in Dundee, Scotland to raise money & awareness in solidarity with Wrasac Dundee & Angus, Dundee Women’s Aid & Dundee Foodbank. It’s run by Derrick and the Make That a Take Records crew, and it’s an amazing weekend of music, friends and stories. You can read more about the history and such of the festival on the MTAT website.

I went to my first Book Yer Ane Fest on the year they moved it to Conroy’s Basement and Rad Apples in 2019 (I think?). By that time I already knew some folks and bands from the local scene, but it was a great opportunity to meet more people, see new bands, consume new music and make new friends. They had two stages, the traditional one in the basement and another one upstairs in the Rad Apples pub. I had an amazing time, it was an incredible weekend. Since then, BYAF has been like my «Christmas time», the time of the year I most look forward to.

During the dark times between 2020, the festival obviously didn’t go ahead. So when they organized BYAF XIV in record time right as we were coming out of however many lockdowns, I was so excited to be back. Once again, it was an amazing experience.

This year will be Derrick’s last time organizing the festival (you can read more about that here), but I’m sure it’ll continue to be something amazing with other folks in charge. Thanks Derrick for the festival and this thing we call «the scene». The bands have already been announced, but even in the best of times, the list is dynamic and can change on the day itself. The line up is awesome, I’m really looking forward to seeing some of my favourite local bands and new ones.

I happened to be at Rad Apples the day the weekend tickets went online and I bought mine as soon as I could #InsiderInformation. I have my accommodation booked and will spend the entire weekend in lovely Dundee. I might be posting stuff to social networks during the festival, or I might just be enjoying the shows and being around like-minded people like I’ve been focusing more on recently, we’ll see.

Really looking forward to this…

La productora musical PB&PR (Playa, birra y punk rock🤘) Producciones presentó la información de esta fecha. Los veteranos suecos (y un uruguayo) del skatepunk hardcore melódico Satanic Surfers van a tocar por primera vez en Uruguay. El toque es el 16 de marzo de 2023 en Midas Music, Rondeau 1493, Montevideo. Van a estar acompañados de las bandas 69enfermos (Brasil) y los locales Problema de Ratas y Artista Desconocido.

You can find this independent record shop at Waverley Mall in Edinburgh. They carry a big collection of vinyl albums and singles, CDs, very cool prints and the largest selection of band t-shirts in Edinburgh. So make sure to browse in the shop and you’ll definitely find something you like.

Nos entusiasma mucho anunciar que Entropía está colaborando con Chango Munks, una banda ska punk de Edimburgo, Escocia. Vamos a publicar en conjunto una cantidad limitada de CDs para su álbum más reciente We Want All Your Minds, y va a estar a la venta a partir del 1 de Abril.

Chango Munks es una banda multi-cultural de siete integrantes basada en Edimburgo. Tocan música ska-punk original de con mucha energía e influencias globales.

Chango Munks – Ska Punk desde Escocia

Chango Munks es una banda de ska punk de Edimburgo, Escocia. Un día me enteré de casualidad que venían a tocar en Edimburgo las leyendas del ska The Toasters. Al rato de llegar al Wee Red Bar donde se realizaba el toque, comenzaron a tocar los teloneros de Chango Munks. Sonaron muy bien, y me quedé súper contento después del toque de conocer una banda buena de ska punk local. Su música se describe como Ska Punk Rock rápido y energético.

Chango Munks son:
Jana – Voz
Xabi – Bajo y voces adicionales
Andy – Guitarra
Gian – Batería
Chris – Saxofón tenor
Andrew – Trombón y teclado.

Los miembros representan varias nacionalidades: Flamenco, Euskera, Italiano / Colombiano / Sri Lanka (y escocés). Recientemente editaron su primer álbum «Something Else is coming», y vienen tocando bastante en la escena. Pueden escuchar y obtener el disco en Bandcamp:

Get it Together – Hardcore melódico desde Escocia

Get It Together es una banda de hardcore melódico de Escocia Central. Formada en 2013 de las cenizas de otras bandas, se denominan el hijo bastardo del sonido Youth Crew del 88 y los compilados de Fat Wreck y Epitaph de fines de los 90’s y principios del 2000. Entre sus influencias se encuentran H2O, Lifetime y Kid Dynamite. Tienen su propia marca de sonido hardcore melódico frenético y agresivo, pero positivamente estimulante.

Siguiendo a Goodbye Blue Monday, terminé en un toque en The Banshee Labyrinth: Un pub escocés embrujado con varios ambientes, incluyendo un cine. Organizado por Anti-Manifesto, un colectivo DIY de Edimburgo que organiza fechas y edita discos, ahí conocí a Get It Together. Su show me dejó con una energía tremenda. Fue uno de esos días en que una buena piña de hardcore con toda la fuerza era exactamente lo que necesitaba. Además de comprarme el CD, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a Mark y charlar con él, y además de ser un tipo súper macanudo, habla un español excelente.

Goodbye Blue Monday – Mysery Punk desde Escocia

Goodbye Blue Monday es una banda de Punk melódico con integrantes de Glasgow y Edimburgo en Escocia. Se formaron en 2013 y entre sus influencias se encuentran Iron Chic, Dead To Me y The Menzingers y una cadencia escocesa característica parecida a The X-Certs y Twin Atlantic. Los vi por primera vez en Bannermans Bar en Edimburgo junto a The Bombpops, entre otras bandas. Desde ese entonces es la primera banda que empecé a seguir de la escena local, y este tema ha quedado en la banda sonora de mi vida:

Mysery Punk Ruined My Life viene del EP del mismo nombre, editado en CD por Make That a Take Records, un colectivo punk DIY en la costa este de Escocia. Organizan shows, editan discos, y apuntan a contribuir de manera positiva a la comunidad, un ejemplo a seguir. Este año la banda estuvo en el Punk Rock Holiday en Eslovenia, y aparte de algunas fechas más aquí y allá, va a estar participando del Book Yer Ane Fest XIII, el festival de Make That A Take en Dundee (con pre show en Glasgow y post show en Edimburgo).

Les recomiendo escucharlos en Bandcamp. Tienen un show en vivo muy bueno y además son tipos macanudos.

Vuelve el festival hardcore punk más recordado de los años 2000, para el cual se reunían las bandas y amigos del sello Alquimia Records (sello DIY ya extinto).
En esta reedición 2017, la cual será bajo techo de Bluzz Live, se vuelven a juntar varios de los músicos protagonistas de la escena de aquellas épocas, para revivir el espíritu:

Cuarteto uruguayo de Punk Rock Melódico influenciado por bandas como Green Day o Blink 182. Lanza su disco en el 2005 “Más estúpido imposible”. En 2018 lazará su segundo disco. Zapping integró la grilla de las 2 ediciones pasadas del Festival Alquimia.
