Over the last 20 years or so, my opinion on D&D races has fluctuated. I've probably held every opinion possible at some point or other. So I figured that now, while 5E is being developed, would be as good a time as any to attempt to summarize those opinions.

To be clear - this isn't a post about which races should be included. I certainly have opinions on that (less is more; kitchen sinks breed blandness - but that's another subject entirely). It's a piece on how important race should be.

As I see it, there are two schools of thought. I'm not saying that everyone subscribes to one or the other; rather that they form the two end points of a scale. You may be positioned anywhere on that scale.

Race isn't important

This school of thought resists large mechanical differences between races. That's not to say the proponents don't consider an elf and a dwarf to be different - but from a character generation point of view, the choice shouldn't be restrictive. So the world at large may be filled with tall, slender, dextrous elves and short, hardy dwarves - but a player character is one in a million and can be a tall dextrous dwarf, a short clumsy elf, or an attractive, charming half-orc if that's what the player wishes to play.

Generally - as far as I can see - those who hold this position advocate small initial racial ability adjustments, but nothing they'd consider a "penalty" (although I've long maintained that there's no difference between a lack of bonus and a penalty other than nomenclature to latch on to).

I'd go further. If this is the position, then I'd eliminate racial mechanics altogether. You generate your character, and then you describe it how you want. You can use your ability scores to direct that description - that fluff - but the description is up to you. So your character can easily be a charming, dextrous dwarf, a stocky, clumsy elf, or a mighty, weightlifting halfling. Whatever you want it to be. It can be an anthropomorphic dog, a saintly reformed devil, a quarter-dragon-half-tiefling-quarter-badger. Your race is literally a descriptive choice decided fully by you (with DM input, where appropriate).

There's a complementary side argument to this point of view. It doesn't come up often, but I've seen it. This argument advocates this position based in perceptions of real world racial and gender discrimination. It equates differentiation between fantasy races to discrimination between real world ethnic or gender-based groups. While I can see the case for no racial mechanics in D&D, I can't personally see it as based on this particular argument. I believe that discrimination against real people exists; differentiation between fantasy races is something else entirely.

Race is important

This approach says that your choice of race should be a fundamental decision. That a gnome should not be as strong as a half-orc even after a lifetime of bench-presses. That dwarves are hardy and drow are dextrous. You choose a race in the same way you choose a class: it's a predefined package which describes your character; it defines your character throughout its life, and is a major factor. It's a choice just like your class is a choice. The two together create a combined package which makes an archetype.

In this situation, I'd take the racial choice to the opposite extreme. It would be vital. If you're a half-orc, people are gonna darn well know it! So I'd make the initial racial bonuses and penalties +/-4 (or for those who hate being 'penalized' I'd make the base score 6 and give all races big bonuses except for some in certain areas - but that's just nomenclature, as I mentioned above) and I'd alternate class and race advances at each level. So you'd get something every level, but every odd level would make you more elvish and every even level would make you more bardish. Or whatever.

Furthermore, in this situation, I'd limit ability score adjustments by race. So the halfling couldn't work out enough to become as strong as a half orc in the same way an otter can't become as strong as an elephant.

What about a mid-point?

So the above two positions represent two points on a scale. Two extremes, if you will. And, if I'm honest, I would personally be happy with either.

I know many will disagree with me here, but I personally feel that a mid-point is just a copout. A compromise to no advantage. Giving a race a small bonus at 1st level and a couple of abilities which frankly don't matter after a few levels, assuming they ever did, is making neither decision. It's just saying "meh" - it doesn't matter. It is certainly far closer to the first position than the second; although some editions of D&D have used various mechanics like racial level caps, favoured classes, racial kits, themes, and feats to provide additional detail.

Optional details - kits, themes, feats - are, essentially, the first choice. They're fundamentally no different to a carefully selected loadout and some fluff. Your race doesn't define you, it merely gives you more stuff you can have instead of the stuff you can already have. I can't see a reason to not make all those those optional things available to everyone and just say "describe it how you want". Why shouldn't a dwarf character have developed an eladrin teleport power (taking 4E as an example)? An elf with a breath weapon? We're going "optional", right?

Mandatory racial level caps are a bad approach to the second choice. Everyone agrees with that, and they went the way of the dodo years ago. Favoured classes aren't terrible, but they're a weak approach to the second choice. Class limitations are compelling in the face of this argument, and - damn - they're a powerful flavour tool. But, yes, they're too restrictive.

So I don't feel that a midpoint is something I personally want to see. Of course, I know that's what I'll get - all indications so far are that 5E will have a +1 ability bonus for class, and a +1 bonus for race; this sounds pointless to me. But it's just an opinion piece.

I'd like to see one of the two above major choices. I honestly don't mind which. I like both, for different reasons. But I do feel I'd like to see a strong decision: race matters, or it doesn't (mechanically speaking). I'd rather not see a mid-point comprising of small bonuses at 1st level and the ability to detect secret doors. Because who's gonna care about that at 10th level? Your elf and your dwarf are identical by then in terms of race. Their class powers and ability scores overwhelm their racial identity. At that point, race is about role playing and fluff; so why not just state that from the start and stop fiddling about with teeny bonuses?

So one or t'other. Race is very important, or race isn't important at all. Either just fluff, or strong mechanics throughout the entire career. I frankly like both options. But I don't like the mid-point. And no racial level limits or class restrictions.

Am I totally off-base? What do you think? How would you like to see race treated in D&D?

This week we find out a lot more about what Wizards of the Coast, with the help of the fans are attempting with the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Some epic level elemental princes are presented for your games, Lair Assault prepares to hack and slash, and lots of other great stuff for your games was released. Now lets read what Monte thinks.

Monte Cook talks more in Uniting the Editions, Pt. 3 about what we can expect to see and not see. The poll is a great idea and pretty inclusive. See what the readers at EN World are saying about this article and poll here.

Greg Bilsland and Matt James collaborated on the Attack of the Tyrantclaw, the new Lair Assault beginning March 1st. Perhaps starting at sixth level will increase your odds of survival but I wouldn’t count on it. Make sure to check out Matt’s work on the upcoming Into the Unknown: The Dungeon Survival Handbook in May.

Claudio Pozas delivers a megapiece called Elemental Patrons and Palaces. This is a great backdrop piece to be worked into your existing campaign or a brand new one. I like the continuous delivery of sample quests as these save me time when I am looking at an article and asking myself, "Ok now how do I use this in my game?" You have to be excited about all the support the Players Option: Heroes of Elemental Chaos is receiving.

Ed Greenwood delivers a Sembian fortune in The Enchanted Painting of Manyshield Hall for the Eye on the Realms series. I am enjoying the attention that the Realms is receiving and this article tells the story of a wonderful plot hook to paint a great adventure.

Lords of Chaos: Olhydra and Yan-C-Bin by Michael E. Shea delivers threats at sea or in the air. There are some tough minions of the elemental princes for your players to battle, or the elemental princes themselves. We can't have enough epic tier threats.

Designing Chaos: Class and Themes by Robert J. Schwalb discusses how to use the many options from the Player’s Options: Heroes of the Elemental Chaos in your games. There is even some talk of Dark Sun and Al-Qadim and how this books works in those campaigns. I really want to see what they have done with the sorcerer. There is still a lot of time for 4E campaigns.

If you missed Monte Cook's Blog: Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too then you need to stop what you are doing and go read it. I think spell casters are such a part of the game that you have to give them the time they deserve. Just keep it balanced. Other gamers are talking about this here.

Rodney Thompson answers your questions about the game in Rule of Three. This week it is, you guessed it, three questions about the next edition of D&D. It is good to see so many fans asking great questions about their hobby. I think the next edition and the community are on the right track.

I sat down to read Bookwyrms: Everlasting Characters by Nina Hess expecting a pretty standard review. What was delivered was a much meatier guest piece by Richard Lee Byers, author of The Masked Witches, Brotherhood of the Griffon Book IV. This look at what goes into a book is easily applied to a campaign.

Robert J. Schwalb also gives some of his insight in Blog: Fighter A-Go-Go. As is pretty standard he also puts a poll so that your opinion on the topic can be heard. What does fighter mean to you? I think 4th Edition changed the way a lot of gamers looked at the iconic class. Not so second fiddle anymore. Here is a thread where everybody is talking about it.

Chris Perkins shows you his skills at Map Fu in The Dungeon Master Experience. Chris goes over the pros and cons of using wet erase maps at your table. A couple of clever suggestions for putting together good maps are also provided. I really like the one about how to draw realistic looking rubble.

Blog: A Close Call with Negative Hit Points by Bruce Cordell quickly examines the negative hit point mechanic in the previous editions. The focus then turns to what would work best for the players in a new edition. One opinion is definitely the front runner on the poll. That is why house rules were/are invented.

This show is a collaboration between myself and my little brother, Darren. He's written a blog post about the process from his point-of-view, which I've presented below.

A bit of history from co-creator Darren Morrissey

This week's blog post is probably not going to be very funny. It's all about a cartoon.

Not just any cartoon, but the awesome cartoon that I made for Russ' (my big brother) website. You can see it above!

Nice, huh?

Now I've made a whole load of cartoons in the past, but this was probably the most complicated one yet (Badman notwithstanding, which wasn't a cartoon, so...).

First we had to come up with a compelling concept. When we started, all Russ knew was that he wanted six episodes of a Dungeons and Dragons related cartoon.

The first idea we (by which I mean Russ) came up with was to sit four gamers around a table, playing D&D and making in-jokes about it. But that didn't really grab me. It felt like something that had been done before, and probably better than we could.

So we turned it on it's head. What if we had four fantasy characters sitting around playing a game of Real Life. That's when our imaginations started running riot. You wouldn't just be limited to jokes about nerds and D&D cliches, but you could actually have proper social commentary on real life issues as well!

Wait, did I say 'social commentary'? I meant lame jokes, obviously. Duh.

We had our basic concept. And we decided to name the cartoon after the game that characters played in it.

I worked up some notes and designs for the characters. Russ made me redo them about four million times, coming up with useful changes and suggestions.

Erric the knight, for example. My initial drawing of him looked like this:

As Russ pointed out, he looks more like a wannabe guard than a noble adventurer. So then we decided to work that into his character. Now Erric is, indeed a noble knight, however he also has a 'twin brother' in the local militia. No one has ever seen them together.

After his revision, Erric looks more like this:

The other characters went through similar reworks - Malach, may well be an uber-powerful wizard in hiding. Bilar the dwarf has a secret that he doesn't want anyone else to know - let's just say that he's probably over-compensating for something! Sheenah the barmaid was a late addition. She's only working in the bar to pay for her tuition!

The point was to take cliched fantasy characters and put a spin on them that made them a bit more interesting and, hopefully like nothing you've seen before!

The next stage was to get some voices for the characters. After all, it would be silly if I did all the voices. They'd end up all sounding the same. But we also knew that we wouldn't be able to get all the different voices we needed into a studio at the same time. Studio? Hah. We were doing this on practically no budget!

We decided to see whether we could do it all on-line. There must be plenty of people out there with half decent recording equipment and most of them will have voices, right? They could record it at home and e-mail it in to us. Then I could assemble all of the voice clips into a coherent whole.

We put together a short sample script and then Russ put out a casting call. We expected a little bit of interest. Maybe twenty or thirty auditions, if we were lucky.

We got over a hundred.

Apparently there's a lot of people out there who want their shot at fame, even if it's only through the medium of cartoon! Even I put in an audition!

We had to listen to every single one of them. We've both agreed that if we ever have to listen to those lines again, we might just give in and drink the Kool-Aid. Some of them were easily dismissed because of terrible performances or awful sound quality. The rest was not so easy. After a week of listening and choosing and changing our minds and arguing over who was best (me, obviously!), we eventually settled on our cast.

From left to right: Malach (Me!), Bilar (M. Darin Young), Dee (Melody Mooney), Duncan (George Ledoux), Erric (Joe Gawronski-Salerno) and Sheenah (Karen Bogen).

At this point, we pretty much had a recorded script. Not wanting to waste it, we decided that we would turn it into an introductory mini-episode. So I had to draw it and animate it. And draw it and animate it, I did. That was a lot of drawing and animating! But once the drawing and animating was done, I had templates for future episodes. Hopefully there will be less drawing and animating to do for the remaining six episodes!

Look. Here's a picture of me animating that wasn't hurriedly staged this afternoon for this blog post at all:

Before you ask... no I didn't comb my hair for the photo.

While I was busy doing that, Russ amused himself with the fun stuff - contract negotiations and the like.

We even had a theme tune provided by my longtime collaborator, Jon Steadman.

And then we had a minor crisis a week before the episode went live:

As mentioned above, we had decided to use the name of the role-playing game as the title of the series: 'Real Life'. Shortly after Russ started to do a bit of publicity, he discovered that there was already a web-comic out there called 'Real Life'. We didn't want to upset anyone, so we decided to change the name.

Well that started a week of agony, trying to pick an alternative. We tried pretty much everything on to see if it would fit. Variations on the original title like 'Playing Real Life' or 'Real Life Adventures'. Nothing really floated our boat.

Then it occurred to us that we had the perfect title sitting just outside the Tavern in which our heroes were gaming. The name of the tavern: 'The Perturbed Dragon'!

And that's pretty much it. The genesis of 'The Perturbed Dragon'. Also a potted history of the last month or so of my life - well, the bits of it when I wasn't at my day job, anyway!

At the top of this post, for your perusal (and hopefully, entertainment) is the first episode. Or the Pilot. Or the Prequel. Or whatever you want to call it.

Now I just have to go and make six more of them!

- Darren Morrissey, 12 Feb, 2012.

Adventureaweek.com is a new venture, seemingly inspired by Monte Cook's Dungeonaday.com, which will provide weekly adventures for the Pathfinder RPG. The site takes adventure submissions, which offers a reasonable 40% royalty to the author - although I personally think the "your gateway into the industry" line was a bit overdone by third-party-publishers ten years ago, let alone now, as were royalties-only-based contracts for freelancers, so it remains to be seen whether it's a good deal for the authors when most publishers use a flat-fee arrangement. As an aside, though, I've long advised freelancers not to accept royalty-only deals or pay attention to the "you get exposure, so might make an RPG career out of it" type deals that used to be offered by many smaller publishers, and which even I have offered in my earliest ventures into publishing. But don't let that decide anything for you - it may well be a good arrangement for you, and the set-up does look professional and elegant.

The site will include a new default campaign setting and is subscription-based ($99 per year, or $10 per month, for, presumably, 52 adventures - which certainly sounds like value for money - it's cheaper per adventure than most adventure paths out there, though most folks won't use them all) and opens on March 1st, 2012. There's a free trial adventure called Crypt of the Sun Lord. The site is spearheaded by Jonathan Nelson and ENnie-winning cartographer Todd Gamble who I can vouch for as doing excellent work.

It would seem that Wizards of the Coast are using Haste spells on their workers because not only are they working on the new edition but still loading us up on options for our current games. A new theme, more than a word or two about the Forgotten Realms, and some new magic items, not to mention a giant adventure all await you.

Elemental Rewards, a Heroes of Elemental Chaos Excerpt by Bart Carroll unleashes a few new magical options for your players. Take a look at a new suit of armor, weapon, and two other magical rewards. The Gift of Chaos is the sort of magical reward that I prefer to use in my games because it never requires being traded out at a later level and the randomness of the item keeps things interesting.

Jeff LaSala talks epic tales in History Check: Corellon and Gruumsh. This level of detail is an excellent read and the plot hooks are spot on. This is the second installment in the History Check series and so far I have not been disappointed.

Monte Cook elaborates further on the new edition in Uniting the Editions, Part 2 for Legends and Lore. I agree with Monte when it comes to the feel of the new edition having an OD&D feel with some excellent twists. The poll responses from last week are surprising. The fans here at EN World are letting their opinions be heard here.

Bart Carroll shows you what is to be expected soon in February: In the Works. Details of a new column we can look forward to reading as well as some upcoming products and DDNext are included.

A new theme, the Sentinel Marshall by Jeff LaSala allows your players to become more like the long arm of the law (even if they are halflings). It was a relief to see that the starting feature benefit wasn’t only a situational benefit and the Marshal’s Interdiction power is an intriguing mechanic.

Warrens of the Stone Giant Thanes by Christopher Perkins is part two of a four part series although you can always play the 14-16th level adventure as a stand-alone. I loved Against the Giants when I was a kid and this adventure series has me more excited than any other adventures I have seen from Wizards of the Coast for 4th Edition. The gamers are talking about the adventure here.

Dating In D&D: No One Parties Alone by Jared von Hindman is an amusing look at affairs of the heart and the obligations, complications, and rewards. With Valentine's Day on the horizon it is a perfect topic to introduce a little reality to your fantasy game.

The Dungeon Master Experience by Chris Perkins examines that Shiny New Thing, and how it kills campaigns prematurely. This is very common and I as a DM have been guilty of this sort of behavior and perhaps some of these tips will help us all to avoid abrupt endings to campaigns.

Joining the Party by Tracy Hurley looks Beyond Maps and Minis. She discusses briefly using props, sounds, and 3-D terrain in your game. She also collects some links of other blogs and resources to use in your game and draw inspiration from.

The +5 Crossword of Slaying –Part 4 by Chris Perkins give you something to occupy your mind and see if you are in fact a sage with D&D as a major area of study. Sages don’t use Google.

Rule of Three by Rodney Thompson is the one regular article that I absolutely can’t wait to read every week. The in-depth answers that Rodney gives on subjects such as the influence of skills and powers in the new edition, as well as where the miniature game is right now, and where it is going are excellent. Read over the last few weeks again and you will see what I mean.

Christopher Perkins talks Forgotten Realms in his Editioral:FR’eak. I believe I told you the day the big news broke that the Forgotten Realms would be the supported world out of the gate when we broke the news here at EN World. Seems to me like Wizards of the Coast is getting started early and I am glad.

As you probably know, Order of the Stick is Rich Burlew's web comic about stick figure D&D adventurers. A number of the older compilations are out of print, so two weeks ago Burlew set up a Kickstarter to raise $58,000 within a month.

As I write this with 15 days to go, the total is at $483,626 and rising by $30,000 a day. The fund raiser is due to top a half million dollars some time this evening, and could top $900,000 by the time it's done. Amazing.

This puts OotS solidly in the top ten Kickstarters of all time. Rewards include the various books he's reprinting, fridge magnets, an OotS coloring book, stickers, a hit point tracking pad, and digital PDFs of brand new OotS stories. Be sure not to miss the update page, full of bonus cartoons and a few astonishing graphs.
