Feliĉe, la kvina leciono de Pasporto ne prezentas multan novan informon. Ĝi uzas ĉefe (“primarily; mostly”) tion, kion ni lernis antaŭe (“before”).

In lesson 6 we meet new correlatives starting with neni- and i-, and we learn how to use the infinitive ending -i.

Tiel la mondo iras • That’s the way the world goes

Tiun ĉi filmeton registris reĝisoro Sam Green dum li kreis sian dokumentfilmon La Universala Lingvo. Li skribis:

“Jen ulo el Kubo nomita Juliano Hernández Angulo; li prezentas kanton en Esperanto nomitan “Tiel la Mondo Iras”. Se vi aŭskultos la tuton, mi garantias ke ĝi fiksiĝos nenuligeble, eble eĉ frenezige, en vian kapon. Ĝi estas profunde neforgesebla… mi havas fantazion ke tiu ĉi kanto/filmeto ege, viruse furoros.”

La vortoj estas sufiĉe simplaj; multaj en la strofoj — kaj aparte en la refreno! — devus esti rekoneblaj por lernantoj en la ĉi-semestra kurso por komencantoj.

This video clip was recorded by filmmaker Sam Green while making his documentary The Universal Language. He writes:

“This is a guy from Cuba named Juliano Hernández Angulo singing a song in Esperanto, “Tiel la Mondo Iras,” which means, “that’s the way the world goes.” I guarantee that if you listen to the whole song, it will become irrevocably, perhaps even maddeningly, stuck in your head. It is profoundly catchy…I have a fantasy of this song/video becoming a huge viral smash hit.”

The lyrics are relatively straightforward; many words in the verses — and especially the chorus! — should be recognizable for students in this semester’s beginner’s class.

This week we began the fourth episode of Pasporto, which introduces the all-important accusative ending -n and a number of important affixes (see the handouts).

La espero

Do you remember how Georgo breaks into (drunken) song right before passing out at the end of part 3? Those lyrics he’s singing aren’t random; they’re actually part of La espero, an idealistic poem written by Zamenhof in the 19th century. The words were set to music in 1909 and the result became an unofficial “anthem” for the community of early speakers.

Watch part four of Pasporto. Listen for the -n, which now appears everywhere. Each lesson contains a few grammatical elements (affixes, use of grammatical endings, etc.) that aren’t explained in the notes. See if you can spot some of these, and ask about them in class next time.

This week we finished watching the third episode of Pasporto and practiced the prepositions en, apud, antaŭ, malantaŭ, inter, sub, sur kaj super.

We also talked about the long tradition of Esperanto-kongresoj: (conventions, get-togethers, courses, etc.) that Esperantists flock to each year by the thousands. Kongresoj are great opportunities to travel, learn about other cultures, and make friends from all over the world. Many of the events are youth-oriented, like IJK (Internacia Junulara Kongreso) JES (Junulara Esperanto-Semajno), and IJS (Internacia Junulara Semajno).

Rowland Goodbody is an Esperanto speaker from Britain who documented his adventures at this years’ SES and IJS on YouTube.

Homework

Rewatch the lesson from Pasporto, using the dialog (in the PDF file above) as a guide. Certainly some of the vocabulary will be new, but if you listen/read closely, you’ll also notice a few grammatical elements (e.g. suffixes, word endings) that we haven’t covered so far. See if you can spot a couple of these; write them down and ask about them in class next time.
Solve the practice problems in the PDF file above. The translation exercise may be challenging; if you get confused, please ask questions!

There are no homework or practice problems this week. If you haven’t done the homework so far, use this as your chance to catch up!
Watch the first part of episode 3 (up to about the 10 minute mark, when Georgo drops Flora’s vase). You’ll encounter things you haven’t heard before. Use this as an opportunity to search for new words in your dictionary and record new entries in your journal.

We watched the second episode of Pasporto al la tuta mondo, which introduces a lot of new grammar and vocabulary. This week we focused on the first part, which deals with numbers and telling time; next week we’ll revisit the rest of the episode.

Carefully read over the grammar handout and then try the practice problems.
Now re-watch the video and see if you can keep up with the numbers flying about when characters ask “Kioma horo estas?” and when Georgo and Flora talk about all the expensive fakturoj she has to pay. Use the printed dialogue as a guide.
While watching, you’ll encounter a number of expressions and grammatical structures we haven’t talked about yet (or that we’ve only touched upon briefly in class). These might be good topics for mentioning in your Esperanto journal — or to ask me about, in class or via email.
Send your answers to the practice problems to esperanto at lodestone.org. If you send them early enough, I’ll try to get the answers back to you before class.

This week we watched the first episode of the videocourse/soap-opera/telenovela Pasporto al la tuta mondo, where we met the members of la familio Bonvolo.

Carefully read over the grammar handout and then try practice problems 1.1 and 1.2.
Now re-watch the video. (You can skip over the introduction and commentary at the end: the action begins at about 2:46.) Try to follow everything said; you don’t need to memorize all the vocabulary, but pause the video as necessary and check the dialogue and vocabulary list if you’re confused by anything.
Solve the rest of the practice problems and send your answers to esperanto at lodestone.org; If you send them early enough, I’ll be able get the corrections back to you before our next class. Speaking of next class: due to the upcoming fall break we won’t meet again until the 16th… but please don’t wait until then to do the homework!
