Summary:
In Dancing the Fairy Tale, Laura Katz Rizzo claims that The Sleeping Beauty is both a metaphor for ballet itself, and a powerful case study for examining ballet and its production and performance. Using Marius Petipa and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s classical dance-specifically as it was staged in Philadelphia over nearly 70 years-Katz Rizzo looks at the gendered nature of women staging, coaching, and reanimating this magnificent ballet, and well as the ongoing push-pull between tradition and innovation within the art form. Using extensive archival research, dance analysis, and American feminist theory, Dancing the Fairy Tale places women at the center of a historical narrative to reveal how the production and performance of The Sleeping Beauty in the years between 1937 and 2002 made significant contributions to the development and establishment of an American classical ballet. Katz Rizzo highlights not only what women have done not only behind the scenes, as administrators, producers, or directors of ballet companies and schools, but also as active interpreters embodying the ballet’s title role. In the process, Katz Rizzo also emphasizes the importance of regional sites outside of locations traditionally understood as central to the development of ballet in the United States.

Summary:
Behind the scenes of New York City’s Great White Way, virtuosos of stagecraft have built the scenery, costumes, lights, and other components of theatrical productions for more than a hundred years. But like a good magician who refuses to reveal secrets, they have left few clues about their work. Blue-Collar Broadway recovers the history of those people and the neighborhood in which their undersung labor occurred. Featuring case studies of iconic productions such as Oklahoma! (1943) and Evita (1979), and an exploration of the craftwork of radio, television, and film production around Times Square, Blue-Collar Broadway tells a rich story of the history of craft and industry in American theater.

Summary:
Replay: Classic Modern Drama Reimagined spans over a century of great theatre to explore how iconic plays have been adapted and versioned by later writers to reflect or dissect the contemporary zeitgeist. The spine of plays includes landmark works as Strindberg’s Miss Julie , Oscar Wilde’s comic The Importance of Being Earnest , Chekhov’s Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya , Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun , the Rattigan centenary revivals, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town , ultimately arriving at Beckett’s Waiting for Godot . Through the course of this groundbreaking study we discover not only how theatrical styles have changed but how society’s attitude towards politics, religion, money, gender, sexuality and race have radically altered over the course of the century.

MASTERS OF MODERN THEATRE

Konstantin Stanislavsky (1863 – 1938)
Stanislavsky was a Russian stage actor and director who developed the naturalistic performance technique known as the “Stanislavsky method” or method acting. He co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre in 1897, where he honed his craft of psychological realism in acting.

Emile Zola (1840 – 1902)
Zola was a French writer and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902.

E. Gordon Craig (1872 – 1966)
Craig was an English modernist theatre practitioner who believed that the director was “the true artist of the theatre“. He propounded an art of the theatre in which reality, instead of being reproduced by traditional representational methods, would be transcended and interpreted by symbols. Craig’s stage productions and writings strongly influenced the anti-naturalist trends of modern theatre in the first half of the 20th century.

Jacques Copeau (1879 – 1949)
Copeau was a French actor, literary critic, stage director, and dramatic coach who led a reaction against realism in early 20th-century theatre. One of Copeau’s greatest contributions to the theatre was his idea of a permanent architectural stage for modern productions.

Bertolt Brecht (1898 –1956)
Brecht was a German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer who developed theatre as a political medium. His idea of “epic theatre” proposed that a play should not cause the spectator to identify emotionally with the characters or action before him or her, but should instead provoke rational self-reflection and a critical view of the action on the stage.

Antonin Artaud (1896 – 1948)
Artaud was a French dramatist, poet, actor, and theoretician of the Surrealist movement who attempted to replace “bourgeois” theatre with his “theatre of cruelty”, a sensorial experience intended to liberate the human subconscious and reveal man to himself. Artaud drew heavily on Eastern forms of theatre, particularly the Balinese, to develop his theories, which eventually led to the collection of essays, The Theatre and Its Double.

Samuel Beckett (1906 – 1989)
Beckett was an Irish avant-garde novelist, playwright, theatre director, and poet, who lived in Paris for most of his adult life and wrote in both English and French. He is sometimes considered the last of the Modernists, however, as his body of work influenced many subsequent writers, he is also considered one of the fathers of the Postmodernist movement. He is often associated with the idea of the “Theatre of the Absurd” and is best known for his play “Waiting for Godot”.

Jerzy Grotowski (1933 – 1999)
Grotowski was a Polish theatre director and leading figure of the theatrical avant-garde, One of his central ideas was the notion of the ‘poor’ theatre, in which the fundamental concern was the work of the actor with the audience, not the sets, costumes, lighting or special effects. He is considered one of the greatest reformers of 20th century theatre.

MASTERS OF CINEMA

D. W. Griffith (1875 – 1948)
Griffith made history with his film “The Birth of a Nation” (1915), which pioneered the use of advanced camera and narrative techniques. Although it was controversial for its negative depiction of African Americans, the film set the stage for the emergence of feature length films in America, and was also the first ever blockbuster. Griffith was also one of the first to understand how the use of various film techniques could be used to create an expressive language.

Orson Welles (1915 – 1985)
Best known for the iconic film “Citizen Kane” (1941), Welles was an American director, producer, writer and actor. His distinctive directorial style featured the innovative use of lighting, layered and non-linear narrative forms, and unusual camera angles such as deep focus and low-angle shots. He is also known for his work in radio, most notably for his adaptation of “The War of the Worlds” for the radio anthology series “The Mercury Theatre on The Air”,

Alfred Hitchcock (1899 – 1980)
The English director and producer, known as the “Master of Suspense”, pioneered many techniques in the psychological thriller and suspense genres. Through his point of view shots, his viewers are forced to engage in a form of voyeurism in his films. His shots were framed to maximise fear, anxiety or empathy, and were seamlessly pieced with innovative film editing and sound design which assisted in evoking these emotions from his viewers. Through his cameo appearances in his own films, Hitchcock became a cultural icon.

Stanley Kubrick (1928 – 1999)
The American director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and editor was part of the New Hollywood wave of film-making. Noted for unique cinematography, attention to detail and the evocative use of music, Kubrick’s films cover a variety of genres ranging from black comedies, science fiction, romance, war and literary adaptations. His film “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) broke new ground in cinematography, with innovative visual effects and scientific realism.

Francis Ford Coppola (1939 – )
A director, producer and screenwriter who is also part of the New Hollywood wave, Coppola revolutionized movie-making in the gangster genre with his cult classic “The Godfather”. “The Godfather II” became the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Martin Scorsese (1942 – )
The American director, producer, screenwriter, actor, and film historian, is also part of the New Hollywood wave of film-making. Scorsese’s films address themes such as Italian-American identity, gang conflict, modern crime and Roman Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption. He is also the most nominated living director to date.

Steven Spielberg (1946 – )
Considered one of the leading pioneers of the New Hollywood wave of film-making, the American director, screenwriter, and producer is one of the most popular and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. Spielberg’s early films were seen as archetypes of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking, and in his later years, he began addressing humanistic issues such as the Holocaust, war and terrorism.

MASTERS OF MODERN DANCE

Loie Fuller (1862 – 1928)
Fuller was a pioneer of modern dance who developed a form of natural movement and improvisation which was used in conjunction with her revolutionary lighting equipment and translucent silk costumes. She emphasized visual effect rather than storytelling or expressing emotions.

Isadora Duncan (1877 – 1927)
Considered the founding mother of American modern dance, Duncan spoke of her dancing not as entertainment but as art with a high moral purpose. She discarded the corset, slippers, and tutu of conventional ballet dress, adopting instead tunics that freed the body and revealed its movement.

Martha Graham (1894 – 1991)
An American modern dancer and choreographer, Graham danced and choreographed for over seventy years and was the first dancer ever to perform at the White House. By 1930, Graham identified a new system of movement she called “contraction and release” which gave her dances and dancers a hard, angular look that contrasted with the smooth, lyrical bodily motions of Isadora Duncan.

Doris Humphrey (1895 – 1958)
Humphrey was a choreographic master, theoretician, and creator of the technique known as “fall and recovery”. From the start, her work demonstrated an unerring sense of form, as well as an interest in large‐scale abstract works.

Lester Horton (1906 – 1953)
A pioneer of American modern dance, Horton was greatly influenced by Native American cultures. He founded The Lester Horton Dance Group in 1932, which became known for its individual technique and theatrical style that embraced themes of social and political nature.

Merce Cunningham (1919 – 2009)
Cunningham has been a dominant force in modern dance since the 1960s. He danced with the Martha Graham Company from 1939 to 1945. Cunningham’s controversial choreographic methods and technique, which emphasized balletic leg action and flexibility of the back and torso, influenced generations of dancers and choreographers.

Alvin Ailey (1931 – 1989)
Ailey was an African-American choreographer and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958. He is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. In 2014, President Barack Obama selected Ailey to be a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Summary:
An instrumental tool for both educators and dancers, this book presents creative movement as a new dance discipline that has the aim to develop, through the means of improvisation, the body’s expressive and creative potentials. The first two parts of the book analyze the theoretical and practical fundamentals of the Garcìa-Plevin new method as well as the most important didactic applications. The third section explains the value of the method and concerns the training of dancers and teachers. This method particularly emphasizes the ability to reduce psychological and technical preconditioning of the students and helps to liberate their imagination and sensitivity.

In doing so, you will help spark new ideas for your students out of those two curriculums –no more same-old same-old And in the freshness of these new ideas, students will increase comfort in performing in front of one another and discussing performances while deepening their understanding of the core content through their kinesthetic experiences. The creative-thinking skills that you will teach through these lesson plans and the innovative learning that dance provides are what set this book apart from all others in the field.

Summary:
In this book, the reader will find some of the most important choreographers, artists who helped to shape the dance scene as it is today, from icon Pina Bausch to still-thriving figures such as Xavier Le Roy, Sasha Waltz, and more. Through this compilation of interviews conducted over the course of twenty years, Natasha Hassiotis aims to show on the one hand the choices made by the audience, the agents, and the festivals, and on the other hand, to show through discussions with choreographers what they have to say about their relation to their art, their audiences, and their dancers. A readable material by specialists and non-specialists alike, this work may help people who think of contemporary dance as a difficult-to-decipher “idiom” to familiarize themselves with this very old and popular art form.

Summary:
Richard Pryor was arguably the single most influential performer of the second half of the twentieth century, and certainly he was the most successful black actor/comedian ever. Controversial and somewhat enigmatic during his life, Pryor’s performances opened up a whole new world of possibilities, merging fantasy with angry reality in a way that wasn’t just new–it was theretofore unthinkable. Now, in this groundbreaking and revelatory work, Joe and David Henry bring him alive again both as a man and as an artist, providing an in-depth appreciation of his talent and his lasting influence, as well as an insightful examination of the world he lived in and the myriad influences that shaped both his persona and his art.

Summary:
The three comedies are all about Rohinilatha Seethalakshmidevi, daughter of Balasubramaniam Shivaramakrishnan. Why are the three comedies all about Rohini? Who is Rohini and what is she? She is the star, the catalyst of misprision, the epitome of the map of mislaughing, and the prophylaxis for the anxiety of comedy.

Summary:
The Trial of Hang Tuah the Great, a prize-winning play, uses an ancient story of the Malay hero, Hang Tuah, to re-examine of some of the issues connected with identity prevailing in Malaysian society over the past fifty years or so since the independence of Malaya and the establishment of Malaysia. It is an imaginative retelling of the story of Hang Tuah, associated with the Melaka Sultanate of the fifteenth century who, myth and legend maintains, never died, while historians, time and again questioning Hang Tuah’s very existence, have recently declared that such a figure never actually existed. The play’s text is a powerful and stunning confrontation of myth in the manner of Grotowski (Poor Theatre). In terms of staging, as envisioned by its author, The Trial of Hang Tuah the Great is based upon modern western theories and techniques, such as those of Bertolt Brecht (Epic Theatre) and Antonin Artaud (Theatre of Cruelty). In both senses, The Trial of Hang Tuah the Great is a groundbreaking Malaysian play.

Summary:
Inspired by true stories, this critically acclaimed modern play explores the everyday abuse and exploitation of Asian women and their struggles to obtain freedom. Presented through a highly theatrical mixture of dance, comedy and tragedy, the play questions the myths and stereotypes which underpin the continuing oppression of women in the region.

Sleeping Beauty is a beloved fairy tale enjoyed by all ages. In the ballet, the narrative of Sleeping Beauty begins with the prologue featuring the fairies of Sleeping Beauty attending the christening of Princess Aurora, endowing her with special gifts. Marring the celebration with Carabosse’s curse, the story ensues with the hope that the curse be lifted with true love’s kiss.

Complementing the narrative of the ballet, this exhibition by Singapore Dance Theatre aims to allow members of the public a brief peek into the quintessential tutu and pointe shoes. Both the tutu and pointe shoes form the backbone of any classical ballet including Sleeping Beauty.
