Now I know this post will seem really random due to the fact that I haven't posted anything in a year. That being said, I'm just going to jump right into it. I spent most of last year oblivious to much of my surroundings and that included the wonderful world of film. It struck people as odd that I would seemingly abandon a world that is arguably my first true love. Fortunately, my thirst for it has only grown stronger in the time that I took to refocus my life. So, I attended the AMC's Best Picture Showcase in an effort to reacquaint myself with both my love for film and with my passion to write about it. Below, are just my brief reactions to the 6 of the 8 nominees this year...

Whiplash is a malady of morose musicians whose ego's are based in poorly managed talent. In essence, it's a cinematic vivisection of jazz musicality and the supreme effort that it takes to be the best. It was gripping, emotional, and well acted. Sadly, it perpetuates a system of bullying and narcissism that I cannot condone. The only lesson that is learned in the film is to never surrender, never give up on your dreams...but at what point does the cost outweigh the outcome? The film starts to draw that line and then obliterates it with by allowing us (the audience) to believe that talent & will power will triumph over all obstacles. Sadly, that is not how the [music] industry or the world works.

The Imitation Game is a film about intellectual solidarity in a time of great need. Alan Turing is the creator of the first computer and was persecuted and condemned for his differences. World War II ravaged our planet and the many unsung heroes of that period may never be recognized for their valor. Furthermore, the film demonstrates how horrid our civilization has been toward individuals that are uniquely and unequivocally DIFFERENT. The persecution of those with higher intellect, of those who are attracted to the same sex, of women, and more is unforgivable. As people we must strive to do better, to think of each other as equals. Sadly, this is unlikely to happen within our lifetimes or the lifetimes of the generations to come.

American Sniper is the embodiment of what is wrong with the modern war machine. The brave individuals that go out there to fight for our country and their beliefs often return to a life they no longer fit in. The sad truth is that our country epically fails those individuals and their families by not providing the necessary mental help they need to deal with their PTSD. Aside from that, the film is the weakest in line-up so far. It was pure propaganda made worse by an obviously plastic baby. I couldn't stop laughing at the damn baby. The end

Selma is a movie in a league of its own. This is the kind of movie that EVERY human being needs to see. The story of how Black Americans gained the right to vote is a tale that seems to have been forgotten. With our nation's [the U.S.] first black president preparing to finish his second consecutive term in office, our black voting trends in America have been on the decline. It is no longer popular to vote. The youth were stimulated into taking a unified action nearly 8 years ago by the desire to make history and break the cycle. Sadly, because of the shallow nature of that decision the black influence that forced out the incumbent Republican regime has diminished. Selma serves as a socio-political reminder that drastic change is hard won and must continuously be fought. There is ALWAYS another barrier to break and another hurdle to overcome. The basis of the story is that change can only happen when the people that want it educate themselves and become the change that is necessary. Our system of government is broken and has been for some time, the only way it will ever change is to get the knowledge out there and make the sacrifices necessary to be the difference. Selma is the embodiment of that and should serve as a permanent reminder that complacency is the highest form of disrespect to our country and our forefathers.

The Theory of Everything. Never before has a film elicited such an emotional response from me. It is simply one of the most beautifully crafted films I've ever seen. The story of Stephen Hawking meteoric climb to academic celebrity is only dwarfed by the cataclysm that attacks his very life. From the moment the we become aware of his degenerative condition, the film races a a break neck pace through the ups and downs of knowing and loving some one with neurodegenerative disease otherwise known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. Many tears were shed at each of Hawking's professional triumphs and personal downfalls during the course of this aggressive and equally empathetic film. There is no villain here, save the incurable disease that ravages the lives of everyone it touches. What sets this story aside is the remarkable strength shown by all the people involved in Hawking's life. It is a testimony of perseverance in the face of innumerable odds.

Birdman, it is a statement piece about how true art in Hollywood is being murdered by the masses that crave Michale Bay-esque cinematography and superhero movies. It is a debate that honestly requires a post all to itself. Aside from that, Birdman also touches on why many actors tend to stay away from the superhero-trope. Birdman also dives into the broken psyches of actors that struggle with maintaining relevance in an industry that requires gross amounts of self validation. It's a fun movie but underwhelming and fails to really address any of the points it brings up.

Boyhood, a film that truly shows the rippling effects of bad parenting and poor decisions over time. While the film is pitched as a chronicle of what it is like to grow as a young adolescent in the 21st century; it is actually more a portrait of the dysfunction and despair that ravages families across America. Inadequate access to birth control, a lack of access to higher education for impoverished families, and the drastic state of domestic abuse and violence are all central points in this chronicle of "Boyhood". It would almost be poignant if it weren't so pathetic. The film has all the right elements of something great, but loses it by floundering back and forth with useless pop culture references and a contrived plot vehicle. The film should however be commended for it's fantastic supporting cast and screenplay. Piecing together a film made over 12 long years is no easy task and it is this merit alone that earned Boyhood it's undeserving place amongst the year's best picture nominees.

I chose not to write Grand Budapest Hotel for many reasons. Grand Budapest is a lovely film with oodles of personality and artistic flair. Unfortunately, it is undone by a senselessly tragic ending that really doesn't mesh well with the whimsy of the film overall.
Each of these films are great for different reasons and I purposely avoided discussing cast performance and cinematography. The greatest asset the best picture nominees have this year are their compelling stories. Discussing anything else about them at this juncture would be a moot point for me. I suppose I should say that Selma is my prediction for best picture, or rather it is the film I feel is most deserving. Regardless of the outcome, it is the touching stories that will linger on long after the golden statues will be given out and it is those stories that I feel matter most.

The 2014 Film Awards Season is underway!

     One of the largest precursors to the Oscars is the ever surprising Screen Actors Guild Awards. The recently announced SAG nominations are filled with strong Oscar contenders. Leading the pack is the critically acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave which earned four nominations: Best Ensemble, Lead Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Supporting nominations for Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o. Not surprisingly The Butler follows with three nominations: Best Ensemble, Lead Actor for Forest Whitaker, and Supporting Actress for Oprah Winfrey. The 2013 film year has been filled with many strong performances and films. I am not surprised that 12 Years a Slave and The Butler led the pack from the Screen Actors Guild.
    While I have not had the opportunity to see 12 Years a Slave due to it's late UK release (I am presently living in London). It has been widely applauded by the film and critic communities respectively. 12 Years a Slave is an intense drama about a free black man that is kidnapped and sold into slavery. As the title suggests, he spends twelve years held against his will as a slave on a Southern U.S. plantation. I can only imagine the raw emotions that this film must illicit from it's audiences and from my understanding, Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers a tour-d-force worthy of not but the highest of praise.
    Unlike 12 Years a Slave I did have the immense pleasure of viewing Lee Daniels' The Butler. My brief review of the film can be viewed by here on my blog. The Butler is nothing short of spectacular. The blockbuster drama tells the true story of a black man that worked as a butler in the White House under eight presidents of the United States of America. Until now, the film has been widely ignored by the critics awards this season. With three Screen Actors Guild nominations under it's belt, we are likely to see The Butler at both the Golden Globes presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Oscars which are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
    While the Screen Actors Guild Awards are smaller than its big brother and sister ceremonies (The Oscars and The Globes), they often set the tone for the way the nominations for the other ceremonies will go. The SAG Awards also provide an opportunity for previously unrecognized films and actors to gain recognition that they previously would not have received. I have listed my predictions for the SAG Awards below. I will not comment on the television side as I am inclined to root for personal favorites such as Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, and Scandal. I also have not seen enough of any of the other nominees to give an informed decision. Without further adieu, here are my picks in each of the film categories.

Lead Actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave. From what I can tell of the film his role requires a larger range of emotions from the actor than that of Forest Whitaker's butler. Other nominees are Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), and Forest Whitaker (The Butler).

Lead Actress: Sandra Bullock, Gravity. Sandra Bullock's performance in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is nothing short of breathtaking. It has to be the most expressive performance of her entire career. The other contenders in this category are all amazing actresses but I have gut feeling about this. Other nominees are Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Judi Dench (Philomena), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County), and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks).

Supporting Actor: I cannot voice an opinion for this category as I have not had the opportunity to see any of the films nominated. Nominees are Barkhad Abdi (Captain Philips), Daniel Bruhl (Rush), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave), James Gandolfini (Enough Said), and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

Supporting Actress: Oprah Winfrey, The Butler; or Jennifer Lawerence, American Hustle. This category can honestly go either way. I am saddened that Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station) was overlooked in this category but I remain hopeful that she will gain recognition elsewhere. Oprah Winfrey's absence from film has been well noted and her role in The Butler is emotional and raw. Jennifer Lawrence is an Academy darling. With two Academy Awards under her belt and being the face of The Hunger Games, she has nothing to prove. Her performance in American Hustle is filled with the kind of grit that only the best actresses can summon. Other nominees are Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (Osage County), and June Squibb (Nebraska).

Ensemble Cast: This category is anyone's guess. Each film nominated has a spectacular cast that is filled with high caliber performances. However, I will remark that I would have preferred to see The Wolf of Wall Street here instead of August: Osage County. The nominees are 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club, and The Butler.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I am pleased be well along the way in my process of adapting to life in London, UK. Even more, I am overjoyed to be back in the world of cinephiles. The world of film and media in the UK is small compared to that of the US, but what it lacks in size it overwhelms with quality and exclusive content. Thanks to Cineworld UK, I had the immense pleasure of attending a secret screening of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty; five weeks in advance of its US and UK theatrical releases.

Walter Mitty can easily be summed up as the story of a magazine worker who lives inside fantasy worlds and sets off on a global journey to find a missing picture. Going a step further, I would say that it is the story of a man that wants to desperately live his life but has long forgotten how. The film begins with a diminished Walter (Ben Stiller) simply going through the motions of his life until a series of events lead him toward an adventure of a lifetime. As the film progresses, we get to witness his transformation from an introspective loser to a world traveler and adventurer.

Unlike other films of its kind, Walter Mitty is a tale of a midlife crisis and the self-discovery that comes with it. What do you do when you realize that you're entire life is changing and not for the better. The subject matter hits very close to home for myself as I have been faced with a similar situation as Walter Mitty. Out of a sheer will for survival, Walter Mitty embarks on a journey that takes him from New York City to Greenland to Iceland and much further. His journey is racked with unbelievable feats of courage, stupidity, and the kind of laughter only one who has traveled the world can appreciate.

Adapted from a short story written by James Thurber, Stiller directs his vision for this film to be daring, intimate, and provocative. It easily shines as a poignant addition to the American film pantheon. I highly recommend this piece of cinematic art to anyone that dares to dream that theirs lives can be so much more. It's a testament to the human spirit and how we compartmentalize and deal with common stressors like the loss of a loved one or being fired from a job that you worked at for nineteen years. Kudos to Ben Stiller and his formidable co-stars (Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, & Sean Penn) for bringing creativity, adventure, intelligence, and heart back into the world of dramatic comedy.

Rating 5 (Maximum of 5): A beautifully executed comedy of immense proportions.

Don Jon

It's not a common occurrence for a single person to be the Director, writer, and star of their own film. When this rare phenomena takes place, the results are unpredictable. In the case of Don Jon (Rated R), Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines in all areas.
The film takes place in New Jersey and follows the sexual adventures of Jon Martello (Levitt). During the course of the film we experience life as Don Jon does. Levitt is blunt and brutally honest with his character's misguided realities. Things change drastically after he meets the vivacious Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson). As the cracks in life begin to take the toll on his various relationships, meets a potential guiding force in the troubled Esther (Julianne Moore).

While Don Jon is overwhelmingly raunchy, and explicit with the subject of Martello's libido, it serves a very important purpose...reality. From his faith, to his friends, to his awkward Jersey Shore family, we pleasantly experience Don Jon in a relatable manner. The laughable, intoxicating, oft-times difficult to watch reality of Don Jon's life is what separates this artistic film from traditional sex romp comedies. There is nothing over-the-top about the film or any of it's characters. Whether you frown at the behaviors depicted or disagree with the ambivalent treatment of religion; the single fact remains that it is a reality for a great many men (and women) in our modern American society. The norms of our predecessors are no more than meager ideologies. Moreover, the film combines film editing techniques that are uncommon in today's box office driven Hollywood. I highly recommend this film to anyone who has an open-mind and most importantly a sex life.

Rating 4 (Maximum of 5) - for sheer audacity and attention to detail.

Elysium

In the year 2154, the current wealth gap explodes to an extreme that most didn’t think possible. The extremely wealthy and affluent members of society escape the pollution and over population of our planet for a virtually perfect existence on a space station called Elysium. The rest of the human race is left behind on a dying planet to starve and suffer abuse by a system mechanical operated authority and sub-par living conditions. That all changes when Max (Matt Damon) suffers a life-threatening injury and uses his steely resolve to fight the system and embark on a mission that could balance the scales of justice and welfare once and for all.
Elysium (Rated R) is a breathtaking and often eerie projection of a future is more possible than most would care to realize. It’s this jarring expansion of the current socioeconomic crisis that makes this film almost too relevant. Many can easily misconstrue the film as a vehicle for political agenda rather than a science fiction drama. This movie is an allegory of immense proportions and a very well-crafted one.
State-of-the-art special effects and a well driven plot vehicle allow star Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley (District 9) to deliver superb performances that will have you at the edge of your seat and discussing the film with friends for days.
Like all films, Elysium is not perfect. Jodie Foster’s fake accent is skeptical at best, but she makes up for it with venomous attitude and electric elocution. Some will recognize on-going themes from director’s first major motion picture, District 9 and criticize his single-mindedness. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Elysium. The film is poignant, visceral, and has none of the pacing issues of its predecessor. Fans of director Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 will adore Elysium, others will merely speculate on the film’s minor flaws.

The Butler

     In the brief history of the United States of America, many people from several cultures suffered at the hands of racism and ignorance while trying make better lives for themselves and their families. Most famously, the American Black community suffered injustices of a grand scale and endured humiliation of a level that no other race can attest to.
      In Lee Daniels' new film "The Butler" (PG-13) follows the often tragic life of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker). We watch as he painstakingly works his way from the cotton fields and eventually to The White House where he works as a butler under eight presidents, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War.
      This film succeeds on multiple levels, but most importantly in its deft transitions between the changes in American Society and its effects on Cecil's family and life. Stunning portrayals of intimate encounters within and outside The White House create on screen tensions on a level I have not seen depicted in a decade of film.
     From John Cusack's Richard Nixon to Jane Fonda's Nancy Reagan, "The Butler" soars with accurate character acting and lethal undertones woven into a complex and meticulous script. Oprah Winfrey shines as Gloria Gaines, the oft withdrawn alcoholic housewife that struggles with her and her husband's demons all whilst raising two boys during one of the most turbulent time periods in American history. It is easy to say that this is one of the first truly great movies of the year so far and will go down as an instant American classic.

After nearly a year away from writing, I have finally found my passion for it again. My current position at the Radisson Blu Hotel Chicago is coming to an end and I am leaving the U.S. to live in London. During my time overseas I will be wholeheartedly dedicating myself to my relationship and rediscovering myself and my passions. Recently, I have been encouraged by my hotel's General Manager to write for the Radisson Newsletter "Blu's News". I am deeply appreciative for my GM's support and encouragement. Without him pushing me, I probably would not have returned to this blog. I hope that there are people who are still reading this and I welcome all new followers along in my epic journey to revitalize myself and bring my once dead dreams into a vibrant reality.

Skyfall

This post has been written by someone very dear to me. He took the time out of his busy schedule to contribute to this blog. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

     Being based in the UK, I've had the privilege of seeing the latest chapter in the Bond saga,"Skyfall" before its release in the US. As such, EpicD has asked me to share my thoughts on it so here it goes.
Bond films follow a pretty standard blueprint, British national secrets are in danger. Bond goes after the bad guys, gets distracted by some girl, and M. gets him back on track. Finally, he [Bond] saves the day. In many respects, "Skyfall" follows this very pattern, but with some unexpected twists.
     With a running time of 2 hours and 23 minutes, this addition to the 007 series will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The series is somewhat showing its age, as Skyfall is a definite attempt to modernize and bring a new-found sense of relevance to the saga.
     The films formula is simple: MI6 is under attack from multiple angles and 007 (Daniel Craig) must come out of 'retirement' to save it. Bond's loyalty to M. (Judi Dench) is tested as her past, in the form of Silva (Javier Bardem), appears from the shadows to haunt her. Of course there is the girl, Eve (Naomie Harris), to keep 007 healthily distracted.
     Directed by Sam Mendes, the film starts out in unfamiliar territory. Is bond still relevant? Do we still need spies in a post cold war era? 007 and MI6 struggle to prove their relevance in what ends up a very personal conclusion surrounding the Bond we all know and love.

Rating: 4 Stars (Maximum 5) - Action, wit, and secrecy of a bygone era clash with the modern world resulting in an epic addition to the Bond franchise.

Looper

     In my triumphant return to writing, I am briefly discussing sci-fi/action film Looper. Since February, I have been vexed by the vicarious vicissitudes of fate. Now that things have calmed down, I will resume doing what I love most...watching and critiquing movies. Without further adieu, here is a brief synopsis of Film District's Looper.
     Fate, providence, predestination, consequence, future, and death are all themes in Looper, a time traveling action epic starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt. Looper, takes place in the not so distant year of 2074. It is a society where one can work as an assassin for mob syndicates that send victims 30 years back in time for execution. These "assassins" are known as loopers. Loopers lead a relatively easy life as long as they kill each mark put in front of them. The job continues until they assassinate their future selves. Upon completion of this inevitable task, the "loop" is closed. Effectively closing all loose ends that tie these assasins to their emloyers. This is where the problem begins...
     Looper begins with a brief glimpse into the life and addictions of Joe (Gordon-Levitt), a looper whose future will bring drastic changes to his present. Once this change occurs, we are violently introduced to future Joe (Bruce Willis). A man with his own set of memories and life history that are about to be disrupted by the consequences of time travel. From this point forward the film takes a jarring turn towards rapid story progression, time-paradoxes, and stylized action of the likes we have not seen since Die Hard With A Vengeance. As a bonus, Sara (Blunt) provides an interesting turn of events that will undoubtedly lead to many conversations with friends on the laws of astrophysics, time travel, and evolution.
     What happens when your future and past intersect? What happens to the past that you remembered before the time/space continuum was corrupted? How do you alter the future without knowing that your actions are the cause of the problem you are trying to solve? These questions are just a few of the conversation starters that will make this movie a must-see-event for years to come. All in all, Looper provides a gripping tale of the consequences of a person's actions and delivers it on a special effects driven platter ensconced in breathtaking brutality that we have not in any film this year. A superb effort from director and writer Rian Johnson, a film that should not be missed.

Rating: 5 Stars (Maximum of 5) - Brutality, science, and masterful storytelling combine in Looper, the best action film of 2012.

The Lorax

For those who are unfamiliar, The Lorax (Danny DeVito) is a mystical creature that speaks for and protects trees. Ted (Zac Efron) is a 12-year old boy who will do anything to get the attention of the beautiful Audrey (Taylor Swift). During a "chance" encounter Audrey reveals that she wants more than ANYTHING to have a tree. Naturally, Ted views this as his opportunity to impress and hopefully one day marry the girl of his dreams. Never having left town before, Ted sets off to find a mysterious man known only as the Once-ler (Ed Helms). The Once-ler begins to weave a tale of greed and the horrible price that it came with. Making a long plot-spoiling story short, the Once-ler destroys the forest and breaks the Lorax's heart. Fast forward several years, and now it's in Ted's hands to fix this horrible mistake.

   The Lorax is a stunning tale that addresses one of the most pressing matters in this day and age; what is more important, the bottom dollar or environmental preservation? Slightly reminiscent of Pixar's WALL-E, The Lorax weaves a magical tale of warning from Dr. Seuss the master of rhythmic story-telling. The film begins with a brief introduction from the famed Lorax and immediately erupts into a song and dance sequence that will grab the attention of every one in the audience. Don't be fooled by this film, it's musical aspects are merely an easy disguise for the intense dialog that is riddled with poetic devices. The subtle adult humor is not hard to miss, but will not alienate even the most conservative families.
     Unfortunately some may view the film as a political platform for liberals, democrats, and environmentalists. It's message is very grounded in the consequences of big corporations, greed, and environmental conservation. Another film with a similar theme would be 2011's The Muppets. The Muppets film was unfortunately viewed to be Marxist by many narrow-minded critics. Simply put, the environment should be more important than the convenience or financial gain of destroying it. This message may go over the heads of the children that see this movie, but the concept will be driven home with eye-popping 3-D effects.
     Long story short, The Lorax is definitely a film for families of all ages to enjoy. The characters are colorful and memorable. From a feisty grandmother (Betty White) to a devious corporate tycoon (Rob Riggle). The film can appear to be a blatant attempt at environmental pandering and come off as being preachy, but it's a message we all need to hear. Chris Renaud and Kyle Balda co-directed a beautiful story that's filled with enough fun and humor to keep the attention of everyone in the audience.

Rating: 4 (Maximum of 5) - The Lorax is a beautifully crafted Doctor Seuss educational masterpiece.

The Iron Lady

The other day I had the immense pleasure of seeing Meryl Streep portray one of the most powerful women in modern history, the indomitable Margaret Thatcher. For those who are unaware, Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to head the conservative party and the first to become prime minister of Great Britain with a tenure lasting from 1979-1990. She earned her title as "The Iron Lady" for her tough stances on unions, and labor laws. It is no wonder that such a powerful woman in history would be portrayed by one of the most powerful actresses of all time.

     Meryl Streep gives what I consider to be a career best performance in The Iron Lady. She flawlessly assumes the role of the great Margaret Thatcher as a retired woman suffering from dementia and as a political force of nature. The film begins with a brief glimpse into the modern life of Ms. Thatcher as an elderly woman. It is shortly revealed to us that she is in fact suffering from delusions and paranoia. It is not long before that we are plunged into a series of flashbacks that chronicle Margaret's life as a young girl who never fit in at home or socially.
     Within these early flashbacks the role of the then unmarried Margaret Roberts is played by Alexandria Roach. We are quickly made aware of how young Margaret is uncomfortable with her home life and strives to do something more with herself. Despite being shunned by other girls her age and her mother, her father remained a positive force in her life and supported her continuing her education at Oxford. We are then whipped back and forth between present day and her road to political power.
     The film does it's best to show us that this now demure and somewhat broken woman was once capable of making the most powerful men in the world squirm in their seats with only her words. Unfortunately, what should be a subtle contrast ends up being a coy and often unfair representation of Thatcher in the present day. Director Phyllida Lloyd puts too much emphasis on the life that Baroness Thatcher lives now in an attempt to draw an emotional response from audiences. This tactic comes off as nothing more than exploitations of circumstance and emotional pandering. Margaret Thatcher is not a woman that we should pity, she is a woman who is to be revered.
     Luckily the film is saved by it's accurate portrayal of Thatcher throughout her career and the lengths that she had to go to overcome every trial that dared to hold her back. In one scene Thatcher states, ‘It used to be about trying to do something; now it’s about trying to be someone.' Regrettably screenwriter Abi Morgan does not heed the advice of this line. The problem with the movie is that does not show enough of what Margaret Thatcher did, but instead focuses too much on who she is now.
     In the end, The Iron Lady is still a powerful film and poignant lesson in global political history. Meryl Streep once again more than plays the role she is presented with, she is a solid manifestation of the much maligned former Prime Minister. This definitely a film to see because of it's importance and because of the stunning portrayals by the entire cast. Just be prepared to be somewhat disappointed by the manner in which the story is told.

Books & Adaptations

I've been going through a lot of posts from an old blog I used to maintain. While reviewing a lot of these sometimes awkward and grammatically challenged posts, I discovered a creative jewel that I have long forgotten. The post detailed a letter I wrote to my favorite author at the time in regards to adapting one of his series into films. I also mention "The Golden Compass", which at the time had not been released as a film. While The Golden Compass had immense potential, it was dragged down and destroyed by the narrow-minded and unimaginative members of the American religious community. The backlash of negative press resulted in the studio (New Line) pulling the plug on future projects. To make matters even worse, major plot lines were intentionally omitted from the film due to studio censorship. It's ridiculous that people would boycott a fantasy film because of it's over arching themes, but would still allow trash like Borat, Jackass 2, and even The Paranormal Activity series to thrive. Alas, I have digressed. I hope you enjoy this blast from the past and feel encouraged to post comments. Thanks!

I recently wrote a letter to my favorite author of all time (at the moment) to bounce some thoughts off of his head and generally get some off of mine. I am posting that very same letter here as well for the opinions of my friends, family and dedicated readers. Please feel free to respond with thoughts, advice or commentary.

Dear Garth Nix,

Mr. Nix I am an avid reader and an aspiring writer in the US. I'm writing this to share with you some of my thoughts and propose a few questions. At this current time you are my favorite author. Overall, I love the energy and flow of all of your books. Your literature has helped me write several short stories and has furthered my own dreams to become an accomplished filmmaker. You are fiercely imaginative and you have yet to release a book or story that is less than riveting. It has been a dream of mine to adapt "The Abhorsen Trilogy" into three separate powerful screenplays for film. Of course yours is not the only one, but the most pressing. I initially fell in love with Sabriel long before I knew it was a trilogy. I have since written a screenplay based on it for a school project. The world of the Abhorsen is so complex and imaginative that I feel like it can spawn a generation of followers via films and mini-series. While I am sure that you are in current discussions and/or negotiations with many people about bringing your many works to life. I wanted to be sure that unlike some authors, that this is done in the most accurate way possible. For example, I love Philip Pullman and my dream of bringing the "His Dark Materials Trilogy" to life is now dead. Alas, all I can do is hope that Mr. Pullman had more than a hand in the adaptation of a very complicated book (The Golden Compass) than other authors have had in theirs. A fine example would be what I consider to be the travesty of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Mrs. Rowling has accomplished what many writers dare to achieve. She started with nothing and ended with a cultural phenomenon. As she wrote, her books became more complex and progressively more stylized and powerful. In essence, she got better as she went along. Unlike her writing, the films have done just the opposite. I may be over exaggerating, but I could have publicly executed David Yates (the director) for the most recent film (Order of the Phoenix). I do not wish for this to happen to any of your films, or to others whom I admire. I feel that as an author you have to be just as fiercely dedicated to your own works of literary art as you were during their initial editing process.
I am sure that you are well aware of all of this. Then again this is an open forum so I am also writing this for all those who wish to read and respond. So in final words, I wish to say that I pray for your continuing success and hope that like myself your passion for great writing will translate into great films. I look forward to your response (as well as anyone else) and bid you adieu.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

     For the past several years we as movie-goers have been subjected to an alarming number of adaptations. Whether it has been from a graphic novel, manga, children's book, or other literary work; it seems as if there are no longer any original thoughts in Hollywood. Especially when you think of films that are in fact remakes of a movie that was an adaptation of a play that was an adaptation of something else entirely. Nonetheless, it is happening and will continue to happen. The good news is that occasionally a truly great book to film adaptation is made. Great adaptations go above and beyond to bring the original piece to a vibrant and artful life. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is one of those great film adaptions.
     Directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is an adaptation of a novel with the same title. This film follows a nine-year-old loses his father in the September 11th attacks and his journey to to find the lock to a key that was left behind by his father. Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) is incredibly close to his father Thomas Schell Jr. (Tom Hanks) and it almost seems as if no one but his dad understands him. Oskar is a jack of all trades; a self-proclaimed amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player, and pacifist. The one thing that Oskar isn't is good at is being social. He's petrified of many things and the loss of his father sends him over the edge. A year after his father's death, Oskar embarks on a nearly impossible quest that he hopes will keep him from losing his only friend (his dad).
     The beauty of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is it's intimate perspective on how a single event can destroy so many lives. The imagery alone is enough to conjure powerful emotions for anyone that remembers or was affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center. There are many messages to be found within this artistic and emotional tale of family, loss, and love. Communication, self-expression, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are all subjects found within this film. Bolstered by a spectacular supporting cast featuring Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, and Max von Sydrow, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close speaks to all generations and all ages. This is easily the first must-see movie event of the new year. I can only hope that 2012 will continue to deliver adaptations such as this one.

War Horse

Once a year there is a film that will rivet it's audience to their core. A film that can be admired by families around the world. This year that film is War Horse, a Steven Spielberg adaptation of a Tony award-winning play of the same name. War Horse is the story of a boy named Albert and his bond with his horse Joey during World War I.

Seldom are we graced with a quality film that was adapted from a play, which in turn was adapted from a best selling novel. "War Horse" was originally published by Michael Morpurgo in 1982, the book was adapted as a Broadway play in 2007. War Horse the play went on to storm the American Theater Wing's Tony Awards with five awards and wins. Now when undertaking an adaptation of this magnitude the only person I would trust would be Steven Spielberg. Only the director of Saving Private Ryan and Empire of the Sun could replicate a touching tale of love and hardship during wartime.
War Horse begins with a young Albert (Jeremy Irvine) witnessing the birth of a foal. It quickly develops as we see the foal progress in age from a handsome colt to a dazzling thoroughbred. At the appropriate age this horse is sold to Albert's family and this is where the story truly begins. Albert soon trains Joey (the horse) to be the family's indentured servant. As the training progresses so does the bond between Albert and Joey. That is until one day Joey is sold to the cavalry to cover debts accumulated by the farm. It is here that Joey stops being a work horse and becomes a war horse.
What makes War Horse different from any other war film, is that it's heart lies in an animal, not the people fighting the war. This is more about a journey through unfortunate circumstance and survival, than it is about conflicts between rival factions. We watch in awe and sometimes humor as Joey journeys across Europe during World War I. This film is littered with irony and adventure of epic proportions. This is a film that children and families alike can enjoy time and time again. Truly, Steven Spielberg has woven another tale that will live on in the hearts and memories of all who see it.

Rating: 5 (Maximum of 5) - A superb and emotional film that will leave you breathless.

A Mother's Love

As the title suggests, A Mother's Love is a black independent film about a a family thrown into chaos due to a mother's quest for success. Regina (Rolanda Watts) is a successful business woman working for a California based magazine. Mother to two children, Regina has lost sight what is really important in her life in her pursuit of financial success. Her daughter Monica (Salina Duplessis) attended art school only to be dragged into a world of drug addiction and is struggling for help. Having no one to turn to, Monica goes to her father Marcus (Julian Starks) for help. Marcus is struggling with Regina's decision to leave him and cut him out of her life. This all happens while the grandmother Georgia (Amentha Dymally) is forced to watch in prayerful silence.
A Mother's Love is a heartfelt story of how perseverance, prayer, and love will see a family through any trial. It's rare to find a family friendly film that manages to show how important it is to be honest and supportive in both business and family matters. However delightful the content may be, it is important to keep in mind that films like this one are aimed at a very specific demographic. One issue with small budget films is that one cannot expect the same visual or editing qualities that are synonymous with most Hollywood films. When viewing A Mother's Love you have appreciate the values behind the movie and not the execution. Yes the writing could have been better, and yes the editing could have been smoother, but as long as you are a fan of Tyler Perry films or other ethnocentric cinema, A Mother's Love will be right up your alley.

Rating: 3 (Maximum of 5) - A Mother's Love is heartfelt and touching, but would have been more effective with a bigger budget, a bigger studio, and better screenwriters.

Breaking Blah

I have noticed that a lot of people are infected with something that can only be described as "The Blah". Symptoms include sore throat, scratchy voice, congestion, mild fatigue, and general malaise. I've been feeling this way for a few weeks now along with a few of my friends. It most certainly doesn't help anything that I've been at home all day everyday these days. Alas, all I can do is wait it out and hope to God it doesn't continue through Thanksgiving.

Moving along, I had the immense pleasure of see Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 with my niece and partner. I waited to see it because I did not feel like viewing it in a theater packed with people that would irritate or annoy me. So we saw an early Saturday morning show that only had a handful of people who were silent and respectful. The film started and we were instantly transported into a world where emotions are restrained, forced, and generally laughable. Breaking Dawn Pt 1 is essentially all about Bella... actually all the Twilight films are about Bella but I digress. In this movie Bella (Kristen Stewart) gets married to her vampire boyfriend Edward (Robert Pattinson) and gets pregnant. That's the most I can say without spoiling anything else.

Taking a departure from the previous films, new director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) opts for a film with more visceral imagery and a more literal translation from the book. Condon gives us the opportunity to "hear" the voices of the "wolves" (technically they are shape-shifters) which previously was avoided. While it was refreshing and effective for the development of the film, the thought-speak felt relatively awkward and contrived. Although I do commend the writers for doing a great job with the wedding. The nuptials were short, the ceremony was quick and the wedding toasts felt almost unscripted, adding to their humours beliveability. I found that the subtle humor in the character interactions made this film.

The rest of the movie was just kind of blah for lack of a better word. Taylor Lautner takes his shirt off and spends a lot of time running on all fours. That's about it. I could go on about the great make-up job the did on Kristen Stewart and how flawlessly they transformed her character from beautiful Bella Swan to an emaciated pregnant corpse. Outside of great make-up the film's best moments are in the final 20 minutes in which a plethora of frenzied activity culminate to Bella going into labor. The credits begin rolling and those who stick around get a scene where the Volturi are informed on the fate of Bella. Now we unfortunately have wait an entire year for the thrilling conclusion of the Twilight Saga and I can only hope that the film will do the rest of the book a modicum of justice.

Rating: 2.5 (Maximum of 5) - While entertaining Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 still strikes out like it's predecessors

     I long for the day that I am graced by the presence of a God-like being. Ever since I was a small boy I imagined that I was chosen by a greater power to do great things. Whether it was Zeus or Professor Charles Xavier, I was certain that I was different from other people. Turns out I was just an extremely melodramatic, overly idealistic loner with many flights of fancy. I adore mythology of all origins. I was originally enthralled by Greek mythology in the fourth grade by my teacher professor Ms. Kamberos at the University of Chicago. She exposed me to a world with a far richer history than that of our own. It is because of her that Greece is my dream destination (specifically Athens and Crete). I take my Greek mythology very seriously and judge the films about it harshly.
     This brings me to my movie critique of the week, Immortals a story of evil King Hyperion's (Mickey Rourke) mad quest for a weapon that can destroy humanity by unleashing the Titans. All that stands in his way is Theseus (Henry Cavill), a mortal man chosen by the Gods to defend humanity. Henry Cavill is perfect as Theseus. Young, agile, beautifully sculpted, and sincere, Cavill's Theseus shines amidst the gritty and baron landscapes. The story propels rapidly and manages not to flounder the story with it's pace. Events unfold with efficiency and ease all while captivating the audience every step of the way. Mickey Rourke is just as ruthless and charming as ever in his role as the mad King Hyperion. A warlord hellbent on bringing the world to his knees and becoming immortal through history.
   Now that I mention history, I must say that while Immortals is fierce and imaginative, but do not expect it to follow traditional Greek mythology. The film avoids giving any background or general information on the Gods or the Titans. Those who are unfamiliar with mythology may feel slightly lost amidst the sea of characters and references that are not explained or properly introduced. Here is a brief rundown of what happened...
     Long ago, before the Gods were fashioned, the Earth was filled with great beings known as the Titans. One Titan known as Kronos had several children by a mortal named Rhea. Kronos eventually ate his children in fear of a prophecy that foretold his undoing by his son. A grief stricken Rhea manages to hide her son Zeus from Kronos so that he may live to maturity. Once of age, Zeus confronts Kronos and forces him to spit up his offspring. With his brothers and sister by his side Zeus leads the Olympians into a battle against the Titan. After a decade, the victorious Olympians drive the remaining Titans into a prison buried beneath Mount Tartarus. The Gods that survived were given titles by their brother Zeus and he was crowned King of the Gods for his might and ingenuity.
    Now while the credits tell us that Helios, Poseidon, Athena, and Aries are the Gods we see in the film, only Athena is addressed by name. I only figured out who Poseidon was due to the fact that I knew that the God of the Sea wielded a trident and could crash into the ocean causing cataclysmic computer generated waves. As for Aries and Helios, well they could have been anyone. The movie focus's more on the mortals and their relationships. Such as Freida Pinto's Phaedra, a virgin oracle that is pursued by King Hyperion for her knowledge. Pinto's Phaedra is beautiful and alluring. She does a decent job playing a virgin with hopes of losing her purity so she will no longer be plagued by her visions.
     Do not misunderstand me, Immortals is a veritable cornucopia of flesh and blood. A solid script, beautiful cast, and jaw dropping special effects make this action fantasy an instant hit. I just believe that when making a film about immortals, you should focus on them. In retrospect instead of calling this film Immortals something like The Legend of Theseus would have been more apropos.

Rating: 3 (Maximum of 5) - A special effects extravaganza that manages to miss the point of it's title.

As of late, I haven't been feeling entirely certain of myself. I feel as if I have lost some of confidence. I can't explain why or how this has happened. The important part is that it did and I need to figure out how to undo it. It didn't happen all at once either, it sort of occurred slowly and not unexpectedly. I don't really know who I am or who I want to be. Is it an identity crisis? Maybe... I get up everyday and I go through my day completing various tasks that I know must be done. I try my best to maintain a decent level of living and project an image of a person I've meticulously crafted over the years. The problem is, when I look into a mirror, or am left to my own devices for too long, I begin to question the decisions I have made. I start doubting the person that I have led most people to believe that I am. At what point does the facade stop being a facade and become reality? Once a shroud has woven itself within very fibers of your being, can it still be cast off? And if so, what would be left behind?

Alas, I did not intend on discussing the tempest of thoughts that have been vexing me. My intentions were to merely allude to how easily a person can be forced into circumstances that inevitably lead to great personal misgivings. Anonymous is a highly imaginative film that toys with the notion that William Shakespeare did not write any of his plays, poems, or sonnets. Primarily set in the time of Queen Elizabeth 1, Anonymous is a riveting political thriller involving forbidden love, attempts to succeed the crown, and suppression of free speech. Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill & Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1), Vanessa Redgrave, and David Thewlis (Harry Potter) all lead an ensemble cast through complex English politics and how the greatest playwright to have ever put pen to paper came to be. It is a perilous time for writers and politicians alike.

The film opens with a brilliant prologue performed by Derek Jacobi. He literally sets the stage for a great tale that even I would love to see performed in a theater or opera house. It rapidly progresses from the prologue to a series of elaborate set pieces and time jumps. At first the timelines are a little confusing, but as the film progresses it entrenches you in a battle of wits and subterfuge that spans decades.

The central plot of Anonymous surrounds the Earl of Oxford and his personal identity crisis. He struggles with his great imagination and fails to balance it with even a modicum of pragmatism. The choices he makes are merely to satisfy those around him. When he attempts to make decisions for himself, they lead him to great tragedy and sorrow. What is a life worth living if you have not been allowed to live the life you like? I must applaud director Roland Emmerich and writer John Orloff for putting together this unbelievably creative film. From beginning to the very bitter end, you have sit in awe of the fantastic tale that was woven to spark debate and conversations across the globe.

Rating: 4 (Maximum of 5) - Anonymous is a captivating emotional thrill ride that will leave you salivating for more.

A Jarring Remake... Straw Dogs

     It is not often that a film can emotionally shake me to my core. In recent memory the last film to affect me to the point where I had to leave the theater was Precious a film based of of the novel "Push" by Sapphire. It's difficult for me to discuss why films whose prominent themes center on abuse and rape. Abuse and rape are touchy topics, and often difficult to film without crossing boundaries and/or offending people. In my opinion, the acts of physically invading a person's body and battering their mind is a capital offense. Being subject to any form of abuse can mar a person for years. Often altering their social & physical development beyond repair. Speaking from experience, it can take monumental events or years of therapy in order for a person to recover from any form of abuse. Even a once in a lifetime opportunity to speak candidly with a positive role model is all it takes for a person to shed their dark cloak of pain and move on with their life (See my Reflections post).
     Things like rape and abuse can often be avoided. Fear, cowardice, naivety, selfishness, and lack of foresight all play a role in creating bad situations for yourself and others. These are also some of the main themes in Straw Dogs. Straw Dogs is a remake of 1971's dramatic thriller that starred Dustin Hoffman. The remake is helmed by James Marsden (X-Men Trilogy), Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), and Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood). Unlike the original, Straw Dogs (2011) is set in the deep American south and the professions of the protagonists are changed and vastly improved. The story is essentially about a writer and his wife that move from L.A. to her hometown. Once there they face conflict with the locals, which culminate in a violent showdown of unparalleled intensity.
    James Marsden is perfect as a naive L.A. screenwriter David Sumner. Accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life and the luxuries afforded by city living is the inevitable downfall of this shortsighted writer. Overly confident in the moral fortitude of his new neighbors, David allows himself and his wife to become targets of advantageous hounds disguised as old friends and honest townsfolk. Kate Bosworth's Amy Sumner is guilty of the same shortsightedness. Only Mrs. Sumner chooses to agitate the situation with her brash actions and immaturity. Together these characters lead us knowingly and painfully to an event that is both graphic and terrible. As biblical references are tossed around, good faith between men become nothing more than an elaborate rouse. Seduction, rape, murder, and even racism bring this film to a terrifying close. Not a single moment is wasted in this gripping portrayal of human indecency.


Rating: 4 (Maximum of 5) - Straw Dogs is a well cast, well written, beautifully set menagerie of bigotry and evil deeds.

Action Films! (Killer Elite & Abduction)

This long overdue post has been unfortunately delayed by a great many things. I had succumbed to an end of summer cold, end of season allergies, a busy schedule, and the realization that I'm not getting paid to do this. Simply put, in the face of everyday life this blog is an indulgence and an often expensive one as well. Now here's the good news, for the next month or so I will be posting much more frequently.
Moving along, since my last post I have seen quite a few films. Killer Elite, Abduction, Straw Dogs, and Dream House. Seeing as most of these have been out for a while, I'm not sure if it would be worthwhile to write solitary blogs on each film. Besides, Killer Elite and Abduction are barely worth my time to discuss. they are ordinary action films with very little achievements of note. Killer Elite is an attempt at an all-star cast action film starring Clive Owen, Robert DeNiro, and Jason Statham. This film is about a special-ops agent that goes into retirement only to be lured out to rescue his mentor. I never give plot spoilers, so all I have to say further about this movie is that it's mediocre. The action is great but the script hardly delivers. Statham is mono-toned and mostly expressionless. I think he's fumbled his way through one too many Transporter films. As for Robert DeNiro, his character felt fake and insincere. DeNiro is more memorable as a gay air pirate in 2007's Stardust. Clive Owen is the only actor in this movie who delivers his lines with color and emotion. It is films like this that make me avoid the action film genre in general.

Next is Abduction, an action film starring Taylor Lautner that's unfortunately aimed at underage teenagers. Sigourney Weaver's presence in this film is what initially drew me and her talents are greatly wasted and untapped in this dry extremely corny film. The story centers on Nathan (Taylor Lautner), a young man who's life is sent spiraling out of control once he finds a childhood photo of himself on a missing persons website. The film initially shows great potential by immersing us in the nearly perfect life of Nathan and allowing us to see it unravel at alarming rates. The downside to this is that the film seems to have been written and shot for teenage girls. Awkward moments, cheesy lines, and toned down violence abound in a movie that could have been a great platform for Lautner to shed his Twilight identity. Don't get me wrong, the film is still enjoyable but it clearly intended for a Disney Channel audience.
Unlike the Killer Elite and Abduction, I have a lot to say about Straw Dogs and Dream House. Both Straw Dogs and Dream House will get individual posts.

Lion King 3D

     17 years ago Walt Disney released a film that would permanently ingrain itself in the minds of millions of people across the globe. That film would be The Lion King, it went on to win two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical. Now it's 2011 and The Lion King is back for a limited release and remastered for 3D.
   The Lion King for it's time was unprecedented. It's liquid animation and vivid color palette make it one of a kind. Boasting an award winning score from Hans Zimmer (Inception, Dark Knight) and playful dialogue, Lion King set itself aside as an instant classic. It's actually surprising that Lion King did not garner a Best Picture nod from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Beauty & the Beast was nominated a few years prior, but faced lesser competition (Best Picture nominees from 1995 were Apollo 13, Braveheart, Babe, Sense & Sensibility, and Il Postino).
     Now for those who remain skeptical of the 3D format, film conversions such as this {The Lion King} are a glimmering bastion of hope. While most 3D conversion comes across as a cheap parlor tricks aimed at pillaging the consumer's wallet, Lion King was obviously transformed with tender love & care. The opening sequence in which the animal kingdom pays their tribute to the newly born Simba is absolutely breathtaking. The contrast between background to foreground imagery is striking. The 3D conversion along with the digital remastering, gives The Lion King the truly vibrant life it deserves. I hope that learning from the smash success that The Lion King 3D experienced during it's opening weekend, that Disney will continue this trend and release it's other classics in 3D as they come out of those cavernous vaults. I will be impatiently awaiting The Little Mermaid 3D for next year.

Reflections - Story of a World Wide Woman

Everyone who knows me also knows that I am the veritable definition of a Beyoncé fan. But not many people know why... I was feeling unusually reminiscent today, and decided to share an old post from a blog I no longer utilize. Because of the intensely personal experience I had during the following event, I omitted several details that I do not feel necessary to share. Long story short, Beyoncé Knowles inspired me to continue living my life. Through all of her accomplishments and refusal to let people get in the way of her own success, she unwittingly shaped the goal oriented out-going person I am today. The following post chronicles my very first encounter with her...

      It was a Saturday night on the 18th day of August in the year 2007. The destination was 1901 W Madison St. Chicago, IL otherwise known as the United Center. The purpose was an experience of a lifetime; more specifically it was The Beyoncé Experience. It was to be one of those moments that most people don't even get a chance to have. She (Beyoncé) is world renowned for her riveting performances, stellar voice and overall ability to entertain the masses regardless of race, language, sex or orientation. Breaking world records since the age of 22 she has set the bar for modern artists and even challenged the precedents set by the greatest artists/performers of all time.
     What was so special about this concert? What was so special about this night? This was the night I was destined to meet the woman of my dreams. This was a night that I had longed for, dreamed about and anticipated more than anything in my life to this date. I was going to meet Beyoncé Knowles, forget about getting her autograph or taking a picture with her; I was going to meet her. I had spent months saving for this event and spent even longer after the purchase for the date to finally arrive. When it came down to the point where I was standing outside of her dressing room it suddenly seemed as if time was moving all too fast and I feared more than anything that this moment would soon be just a fleeting memory.
     Upon arrival to the United Center I was instantly greeted by the other ticket holders who were blessed enough to share in the same experience as I. After a 2 hour wait and a presentation of rules and regulations I was greeted by Matthew Knowles (Beyoncé’s father). He gave a brief speech and told us that the moment we had all been waiting for would soon be at hand. Meanwhile, Robin Thicke was performing somewhere in the distance but I could care less, I was here for one person. Within moments my name was called and I was standing in front of Beyoncé's dressing room. Without warning my heart felt as if it were trying to escape from my chest, my head was spinning and my breaths were all too short. Then my name was called once more and I walked into her room where I saw her mother (Tina Knowles) sitting in a nonchalant manner and Beyoncé standing looking directly at me. With her hand extended, she greeted me with a simple but dizzying statement..."Hello, don't you look handsome in your (Beyoncé) t-shirt".
     Beyond all belief, all I could think about was the fact that Beyoncé thought I was handsome! I shook her hand lightly; nervous about whether I would squeeze it too hard. I gave her a polite but obviously nervous hug while quietly relishing the fact that she smelled like summer and springtime combined. She was everything I had expected and more. She was unnervingly and surprisingly more beautiful in person than she appears to be on television or in any photograph. She was tall, slender and soft...the word soft doesn't even do her justice. When people speak of how a woman should feel, how soft she should be; Beyoncé is all that and more. After that slightly awkward moment we smiled and the photographer took our picture. As we finished taking the photo she turned and looked at me and told me how nice it was to meet me and thanked me for coming. Within an instant I wanted do whatever it took to make that moment last longer and all I managed to say was "No, it was truly wonderful meeting you, you have no idea what this means to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me and everyone else this opportunity." With that I turned and left the dressing room on a cosmic cloud that even the Hubble telescope couldn’t find. My face would have put a Cheshire cat to shame.

     I made my way back into the arena and to my seat on the main floor just as Robin Thicke said his thank you’s and left the stage. I was seated in the 4th row, dead center from the stage. It was there that I remained while reflecting on my experience and awaiting the start of the show. Within several moments, the arena grew dark and the voices of the fans were united in a thunderous chorus as Beyoncé rose from beneath the stage. She was fabulous, graceful and beautiful. Her body moved with power and determination, much like her voice crossed vocal ranges rising and falling with calculated precision. It almost seemed as if she was enjoying performing for us more than we enjoyed her. She spoke with sincerity and bit of girlish flavor. The show was a work of art and fun, she covered many songs from her debut album Dangerously in Love including the title track, Crazy in Love, Baby Boy, Naughty Girl, Me, Myself and I, and Speechless. There were other flashback tracks and classics from her Destiny's Child days such as Independent Woman pt. 1, Survivor, Jumpin Jumpin, No No No pt. 2, Bug a Boo, Say My Name, Bills Bills Bills, Soldier, and Cater 2 U. Along with those she also performed 9 tracks from her B'Day album which included the Get Me Bodied Extended Remix. She also had several surprises in store such as a brilliant cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, a rendition of the title track Dreamgirls and much more.
     Beyoncé and team delivered a tour de force of songs, choreography, passionate vocals and genuine fun. There was never a dull moment we were dazzled by the splendid talents of her all female band and diverse range of back up dancers. Most notably during one of her 4 costume changes we were presented with a smart and genuinely original performance (by Beyoncé's team of back up dancers) of the He Had It Coming Suite from the Broadway play and major motion picture Chicago. From smooth grooves in Green Light to a teary eyed and emotional performance of her ballad Flaws and All, Beyoncé met, challenged and went above and beyond the expectations of millions of fans around the world. I can say without a doubt that she is not only a stellar performer, accomplished singer/songwriter and a budding actress. She is a phenomenally gifted and extremely blessed young black woman who is continuing to make history with every stride she makes. From English to Spanish, this world wide woman is transcends stardom in every nation, every language and every color. The Beyoncé Experience is truly one to behold for a lifetime.

Contagion

    We've seen it before with films like 1995's Outbreak. A deadly virus is contracted by an unknowing civilian and eventually leads to the greatest medical crisis the world has ever seen. Contagion follows a similar pattern with efficiency and terrifyingly realistic scenarios. In a time where American Health Care is at the forefront of heated political debates, lobbyists pushing even harder to make profits, and H1N1 was big news only two years ago, Contagion serves as a cautionary tale grounded in reality.
    Boasting an star-studded cast Contagion is masterfully directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Traffic). Throughout the film, we are presented with scenarios that are all too familiar and common in today's world. When faced with an epidemic who can we trust? Will the local news tell us what we really need to know? Or will it be the guy that blogs about government and pharmaceutical conspiracies that will win our attention and allegiance? Is Facebook a trusted medium for hearsay and international crisis information? When racked with fear of the unknown, who will the public turn to? Contagion these issues with unprecedented ease and style. We are privy to the horrors of how quickly and wittingly a global tragedy can escalate.
    I remember when H1N1 or more commonly known as the "Swine Flu" was a massive concern for everyone here in the US. Schools were closed, children died, and decisive measures implemented by the CDC probably prevented mass hysteria. Being overly pro-active is better than not doing anything at all (Where was FEMA during Hurricane Katrina?). Contagion captures all of this and delivers it an well written, beautifully shot, surreal, and epically performed package and delivers it to us in theaters and IMAX screens around the world. A must see event that will leave you breathless till the very end.

Don't Be Afraid of The Dark

    If there is one thing that all people regardless of race, ethnic or cultural background share, it would be a child's fear of the dark. There is something foreboding about dark spaces and the things that may dwell within them. Famed director Guillermo Del Torro presents Don't Be Afraid of the Dark a horror/thriller remake directed by Troy Nixey (no film credits of mention).
    Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is the story of Sally, a young girl girl sent to live with her father and his girlfriend. Sally becomes the target horrendous creatures that hunt her for their own purpose. While this film is NOT directed by Guillermo Del Torro, it bears his trademark affinity for fairy tale creatures and their lust for blood and children. I can't really say that this movie is scary, I spent the entire time waiting for something truly terrifying to occur. The only moment that I found startling was shown during the trailers for the film.
    Horror isn't what it used to be and probably never will. While I have not seen the original Don't Be Afraid of the Dark I am told by others that this one does not compare. Why is it that filmmakers feel that good movies need to be redone? Why cast actors like Katie Holmes, that do little justice or credit to the original works ? In a day and age where ingenuity and breaking the mold will take a film very far, I feel that producers are sticking to tried and true formulas too closely and leaving very little space for free thought. Take James Wan's Insidious for example, it's a simple yet extremely effective horror film that spoils nothing. Unexpected terror lurks in virtually every scene of this small budget box office hit. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark fails to hit that tenor of terror required to cause buzz. Altogether it is disappointing and Del Toro's name does nothing but draw in the masses for what is an inevitable let down.

Colombiana

    Vengeance is beautiful and so is Zoe Saldana in this adrenaline pumped action film from the producers of La Femme Nikita. In Colombiana, Saldana plays Cataleya, a woman who becomes an assassin for hire after her parents were murdered when she was a child. Saldana is sleek, slender, and stunning as this Chicago raised woman with a mission. Sneaking into drug compounds, assassinating affluent criminals, and being ruthless comes easy to Saldana in what must be her most physically demanding role of her career. Unfortunately for Saldana, the script and screenplay do very little for the rest of the movie.
    As many may have seen in the trailer, Cataleya sorrowfully proclaims that when she was nine years old her parents were murdered in front of her. Upon watching the first 20 min of the movie, this statement is proven to false. Contrary to her statement later in the movie, the young Cataleya only heard her parent being murdered. A simple mistake like this should have been noticed by someone before the theatrical release. Outside of this slightly grievous error, Colombiana's other down-fall is the slightly repetitive action sequences. In defense of this, I believe that a virtually self-taught assassin hell-bent on revenge would have a very specific method of operation (otherwise referred to as an M.O.). For Cataleya, that would be slinking through ventilation shafts, and finding the vulnerabilities in floor plans which are typically on public record. Lastly, I feel that the sound editing team for Colombiana has a lot to repent for. During the film, moments where a gun shot or car accident should have been an extremely loud or jarring sound are slightly muffled. It is as if we were being shielded from critical noises with sound absorbent pillows over our ears or the microphones themselves. Let me tell you...it's annoying. When I see guns being fired at point blank or a car crash on screen, I would like the sound effects to match what I'm seeing.
    Beyond the aforementioned production issues, Colombiana is still an extremely fun movie to watch. I'm happy to Zoe Saldana growing as an actress with screen presence and versatility. I have personal weakness for films that feature strong female roles, so naturally I found this movie thrilling. Action films are action films, they are not geared to win Academy Awards or Critic's Choice nominations. They are meant to entertain, and in that Colombiana succeeds.
