i will spare most of my personal sorrow here, but want to share with you that my mum passed away last week. needless to say, for anyone that knew her, these few words alone are enough for a lifetime of mourning. and now i grieve with kitty and ottavio, remembering how lucky i've been to have had such a beautiful mother who was so giving and selfless. thanks mum for loving me beyond life itself. riposa in pace, mamma. ti amo.<p></p>

these guys were really good - it is truly admirable how labourers use their break time for physical activities instead of slumping back with some coffee and donuts (red bean buns and green tea?). this and other shuttlecock-based games are so ubiquitous, they should be considered the official national sports of chinese workers.<br clear=all>

i'm sensing a couple of ironies. first, the one already mentioned - the TAL episode on jan 06, 2012, was the most downloaded ever from one of the most listened radio shows in america (it is its number one podcast). the other paradox is how mr. daisey became so infamous - by embellishing the truth, lying openly in his broadcast on public radio. but in china this is standard procedure, more commonly branded as an element of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_(sociological_concept)">'face'</a>. in other words, something that is rather expected and often commended. mike, you should have kept the agony and ecstasy on the mainland and become a hero..</p>
