Phrases/Sayings are something that we regulary use and which often leads to unwanted or unintentionally funny results when translated from one language to another. A typical example of such an literally translated german phrase is “I believe my pig pipes” which actually translates to “Blow me down!”.

Luckily, there is the internet and to no ones surprise there are also plenty of pages which cover that translation problem. One of those pages that I regularly consult when I’m unsure about a certain phrase is Phrasen.com which works well for the most cases.

I have to admit that I’m a bit lazy, like many developers, especially when I’m able to avoid steps like opening a browser, go to a page, click on a search box, typing in the search term, push the button and check the results and this is totally disregarding the fact that it usually breaks with my workflow as I spend a lot of time on a command line. Therefore I came up with a short PERL script that does the whole query process for me and prints the results on the command line.

The script is available on github.com and requires the installation of WWW::Mechanize and Web::Scraper from CPAN. If ANSIColor::Term is present in the system, you will get colored output which means you should append the -R option (RAW-CONTROL-CHARS) to less when piping long result lists.
