Song Story hears from Nicole Atkins

I’ve never danced so much while editing a segment. If you don’t get up a dance while listening to Nicole Atkins’s, “Girl You Look Amazing,” you may not have feet. After David Byrne came to her in a dream with the song’s hook, Nicole went to Sweden to brake down the walls of her own style and made an after-hours disco rock album that’s truly inspired.

Yet another Song Story episode

I cannot believe how great this week’s segment of Song Story came out! It features Arlan Feiles telling the true story behind his song, “Viola,” which is based on civil rights martyr, Viola Liuzzo. But this week, I’ve upped my game: Arlan put me in touch with Viola’s daughter, Sally, who was generous enough to grant a phone interview to be included in the segment, and I also have clips from Present Lyndon B. Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr. worked into the story.

Another Song Story

I’m so excited about my newest segment of Song Story. It’s the first one that I really edited together. Each segment has been like a new experience. I brought on Laura as Script Supervisor, which is super helpful. I also used the song throughout the segment, unlike last time, which I intend to do in most Song Story segments.

I interviewed the inimitable Sarah Donner, who just hit her $10,000 funding goal on Kickstarter, which means she’ll be gracing us with her 6th album very soon. This song is about her mother and about the start of spring in NJ. It’s called, “Signs of Life.”

Song Story Podcast

I’ve been quietly working on this project for a while, and it’s finally beginning to poke its head out in public. I’m creating and hosting a podcast called “Song Story,” which features songwriters telling the true stories behind their original songs. The Storytelling Night at The Saint that I hosted last week was a big step in the process of bringing the show to life.

The first season will be 13 episodes, each with 3-4 segments, each about 8-10 minutes long. I’m learning the publishing process, so I’ve created a sample segment to be the guinea pig. This first sneak peek features the story behind and alive performance of my song, “Little Love Notes,” which will be on my forthcoming new album.

This segment was recorded live, at The Saint, though the full eventual show will feature both live and pre-recorded interview segments. I hope you enjoy it and find Song Story on social media everywhere, @SongStoryShow.

ZOMFG! JoCoSho today!

I can’t be more excited for today’s The Jonathan Coulton Sing-Along (NOT featuring Jonathan Coulton). Together with , TV’s Adam, Nathan Dickinson, and Bob Denson, we’re going to be playing through 29 JoCo songs, hopefully with a room full of JoCo fans singing along.

I might not get to post photos and/or video until tomorrow, so if you were at the show, please comment below with your own photos and videos.

The Jonathan Coulton Sing-Along (NOT featuring Jonathan Coulton) is quickly approaching on March 1, so I wanted to give you a few quick updates. First of all, the event is at Stay Gold Cafe & Lounge, which is at 800 Main St., in Belmar, NJ. There’s a full menu of awesomeness, and it’s a BYO, so feel free. Oh, and did I mention this show is FREE?

We currently have 5 singer/songwriters performing: Eric Ginsberg (duh), Alex Biese, TV’s Adam, Nathan Dickinson, and Bob Denson. And the song list is up to 29 songs! Holy cow that’s a lot of JoCo songs!

Also, March 1 is the night before Belmar’s epic annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, so if you’d like to make a weekend out of it here at the shore, maybe book a room somewhere.

We’re gonna play non-stop from about 6:00-10:00. It’ll be like the Bruce Springsteen concert of Jonathan Coulton tribute shows. But this room is small, so get there early to claim your perch; once the show gets started, the mix of JoCo fans and other Stay Gold patrons will make it standing-room only.

Storytelling Night at The Saint

Okay. So I’ve got almost everything sorted out for the upcoming Storytelling Night at The Saint, in Asbury Park, on Tuesday, March 11.

There will be true stories on the night’s theme, “How did I get here?” by:
Chris Rockwell (from Chris Rockwell & the Stickball Social Club), Ben Feld, Barry Petersen (from Barry and the Penetrators), Krislyn Ellicott, George Condon, Geena (from Geena and Dragster), James Dalton, and Eric Ginsberg (duh).

There will also be true stories about one original song, followed by an intimate, acoustic performance of that one song by local singer-songwriters:
James Dalton, Geena (from Geena and Dragster), Gary Mayer (from Thomas Wesley Stern), Amanda Duncan, CM Smith (from The Amboys), Michael Brett, Tommy Strazza, Arlan Feiles, and, of course, Eric Ginsberg (double-duh).
