In an increasingly Networked Society, a growing number of devices are expected to use broadband connections to deliver a wide array of rich communication and multimedia services, anytime, anywhere. Even more advanced network solutions are required to meet the demand for superior performance, and the natural solution for operators is to sign managed services contracts with partners that assume responsibility for activities such as operating and managing their networks.

Recruitments further strengthen Ericsson's capabilities to interact with investors, financial community and media

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced the appointment of Peter Nyquist and Elisabeth Manzi as Head of Investor Relations and Head of the Corporate Communications team respectively.

Peter Nyquist has a long background in investor relations and financial communication and since 2006 holds the position as Senior Vice President Investor Relations and Financial Information at Electrolux.

In his new position, effective during the month of September, he will report to Helena Norrman, Head of Group Function Communications with close relations also to the CFO office. Nyquist will be part of the Communications Leadership Team and succeeds Åsa Konnbjer who has been acting in the role since February 2013.

Elisabeth Manzi has for the past 13 years held various communications positions within Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), most recently as Head of Media Relations SAS. In her new position, effective August 1, 2013, she will lead the Corporate Communications team within External Communications and report to Ola Rembe, Head of External Communications, Group Function Communications. Manzi fills a vacancy in the organization.

Helena Norrman says: "Ericsson has a strong communications team in place already and I really look forward to strengthening it even further with two new senior members to the team. Peter Nyquist brings years of investor relations experience with a very strong track record and Elisabeth Manzi gained extensive media relations experience from her years at SAS."

Apps for household solar-system monitoring and communication for disabled win top prizes in Ericsson Application Awards 2013

App developed in UK to help disabled communicate wins first prize in company category
Household-solar-system-monitoring app developed in Portugal wins first prize in student category
1,000 voters, 192 teams from 52 countries

Today, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) announced the winners of the 2013 Ericsson Application Awards at a ceremony at the Ericsson Studio in Kista, Sweden.

The winner of the student category was Portugal's GreenSpark, which offered a solution based on energy efficiency with truly global reach. The UK's TboxApps was the winner in the company category; the team's user-friendly solution solves a major problem.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the competition has been held. This year's theme was Apps for City Life; it was about creating ways to connect people, things and places to empower individuals and society. Students and small- and medium-sized enterprises from anywhere in the world had been invited to submit Android apps.

In all, 192 teams (more than last year's 143) from 52 countries took part.

Four finalist teams from the UK, Poland and Portugal showcased their apps before an expert jury that declared a winner in each of two categories: one for students and one for companies.

This year, the participating teams were vying for a total of EUR 80,000 in prize money: EUR 25,000 for each first prize; EUR 10,000 for each second; and EUR 5,000 for each third.

Winning company-category entry, Predictable from the UK's TboxApps, uses a mouse emulator to enable contactless use of the Android platform, giving people with disabilities a voice. The app will learn based on the user's use pattern, and draw from a phrase bank to give the user instant access to messages so they can quickly get help, interrupt a conversation or join in a discussion.

The jury's justification for picking TboxApps was that the team had created an app that enables anyone to control a computer or tablet with even just the slightest movement of the head, opening up the world to users who would otherwise not interact digitally in the way most of us take for granted.

Team member Rebecca Bright from TboxApps says: "Winning this award is a fantastic honor, and we appreciate the recognition. This will drive us to continue to innovate in this important area."

Winning student-category entry, GreenSpark - from the Portuguese team of the same name - reduces the complexity of maintaining and monitoring a household solar-power system through a plug-and-play device using cloud-computing technology.

The jury's justification for picking GreenSpark was that the team has focused on the performance of solar cells at a time when energy consumption and energy efficiency is increasingly in focus, and has produced an app with obvious benefits to users and all stakeholders in the energy business.

Team member Poan Shen from GreenSpark says: "We are very happy to have been selected among the finalists. It has been a pleasure and an honor."

Event host and Ericsson CMO Arun Bhikshesvaran says: "The Ericsson Application Awards are a great way for us to engage with global talent, encourage, spot and reward innovation. The competition stimulates the ecosystem and is a way for us to explore new and creative ideas that can bring the Networked Society to life."

The judging of all entries started in March when 1,000 users from eight major cities as diverse as Sydney, Johannesburg and New York took part in app evaluations.

Ericsson to close down telecom cable manufacturing

Ericsson initiates the closure of its development and production of cables

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today initiated union negotiations to close down its telecom cables operation within business unit Networks.

As the market for copper cable has declined and the market for fiber cable has grown over the last years, the production has shifted towards Asia, where the majority of the business volumes for fiber cable are found. In Europe there is more production than demand for both copper and fiber cables.

Tomas Qvist, head of Special Products in business unit Networks, and head of Human Resources for Ericsson in Sweden, says: "It is a tough message to bring to our colleagues in the telecom cable operations in Hudiksvall and Stockholm today. The decision is based on the fact that Ericsson's production of telecom cables is small from a global perspective, and that we also have a small market share. There is overproduction on the cable market in Europe. Unfortunately, our production has not been operating at full capacity for a long time and has struggled with profitability."

The announcement primarily impacts the operations in Hudiksvall and Stockholm. A notice of reduction of 318 positions in Hudiksvall is given, and a dialog with the unions in Stockholm for how to close down 36 positions in Stockholm is initiated.

Net sales for telecom cables operations in 2012 amounted to approximately SEK 1 billion.

The current best estimate is that today's announcement will generate restructuring charges of about SEK 0.5 billion. With the current time plan, approximately half will impact of business unit Networks' operating income in the second quarter 2013. The rest will impact Networks' operating income in the third quarter 2013.

Today's information does not impact the process for the divestment of the power cables operations to NKT Cables announced on May 3, 2013.

A smooth and seamless integration of Wi-Fi access is an increasingly important part of any mobile broadband service. Most smartphone users have experienced the frustration of being automatically connected to a Wi-Fi network only to face a noticeably slower connection speed.

To ensure users always get the best connection, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announces its 3GPP compliant Wi-Fi network access, control and management solutions. These enable mobile operators to easily incorporate Wi-Fi in their heterogeneous network strategy, while delivering a consistently high-performance user experience, even in high traffic areas. Incorporating Wi-Fi is a key focus of tier-one mobile operators.

Daryl Schoolar, Principal Analyst, Network Infrastructure at Ovum, said: "Ericsson has clearly differentiated its carrier Wi-Fi solution through tighter integration with mobile operator's 3GPP access, control and network management. This approach should yield a better end-user experience by preventing some of Wi-Fi's well-known bad habits from being imposed upon users. At the same time, operators should welcome the tight integration of Wi-Fi and mobile, as exemplified by Ericsson's solution, thanks to the benefits derived from improving network resource optimization and ease in implementing and delivering Wi-Fi service offerings."

Key to the user experience is an Ericsson industry-first feature that automatically selects the best connection: real-time traffic steering. Ericsson's real-time traffic steering is a software upgrade that constantly assesses key performance indicators in both the mobile 3GPP network and the Wi-Fi network before dynamically and seamlessly shifting the consumer's smartphone connection between networks. This ensures the best user experience and optimizes network resources. Real-time traffic steering is a network-driven feature requiring no user intervention or additional device software. Ericsson also now supports access selection, a self-optimizing network (SON) feature enabling load-balancing between Wi-Fi and 3GPP networks to optimize the average user experience.

Thomas Noren, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio, Ericsson, says: "Heterogeneous network strategies among leading mobile operators are focused on delivering a great mobile broadband experience to their customers, wherever they are. By coordinating licensed small cells with the macro cell, as we announced earlier this year, and intelligently integrating Wi-Fi and 3GPP throughout the network, we're providing operators with the most effective way to deliver consistently high performance consumer connections."

With indoor areas increasingly prone to mobile network congestion, Ericsson has also developed the first 802.11ac access point designed to enable mobile operators to deliver supplemental small cell or standalone Wi-Fi coverage indoors. The 802.11ac standard is common on tablets and increasingly prevalent on smartphones.

Two new cloud-controller options, both featuring 3GPP-standard interfaces to the mobile core, make it easier and more cost-efficient for operators to add Wi-Fi to their existing mobile services. The Ericsson Evo Controller now features a Wi-Fi controller blade, the WIC 8030. A new standalone controller, the WIC 8100, supports up to 10,000 access points and 500,000 concurrent subscribers, allowing operators to consolidate multiple Wi-Fi networks from a centralized location in a cost-efficient way.

Ericsson is also introducing integrated management of Wi-Fi and 3GPP networks on a common platform, simplifying operations and reducing network costs.

These new Wi-Fi 3GPP integration products and features provide complementary and incremental benefits to emerging industry standard features that Ericsson supports, including: Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF), IP session mobility (also referred to as IP address preservation) and Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint(TM) (based on the Wi-Fi Alliance Hotspot 2.0 Specification). Ericsson also offers Wi-Fi 3GPP integration solutions to optimize the user experience for operators targeting residential Wi-Fi coverage. At MWC 2013, Ericsson announced a new Wi-Fi Gateway application on the Smart Services Router (SSR) which also supports integration of Wi-Fi networks with mobile broadband infrastructure.

Ericsson and Refugees United announce Global Hack for Good to connect refugees to missing families

First-of-a-kind event will rally global tech community around a common goal: creating technical solutions that help refugees find lost family
Three weekend challenges in Cairo, Egypt; San Francisco, USA; and Nairobi, Kenya

In order to raise awareness of the plight of refugees, and find new ways to reconnect refugee families in some of the most remote areas in the world, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Refugees United will run a series of developer competitions leading up to World Refugee Day, on 20 June 2013.

The number of forcibly displaced people around the world is measured now at 43 million. That is why it is urgent to reconnect families who have been separated due to conflict, war, and disaster. So far over 200,000 refugees have registered on the service, and the aim is to reach 1 million by the end of 2015.

The Global Hack for Good will galvanize the talent and skill of the developer community toward a solution for separated families. The unique series of "hackathons" - a weekend-long marathon of developing applications on mobile networks - will be held on three continents, on three separate weekends, but all are working toward the same goal of making re-connection easier.

For example, refugees may be reluctant to share data, or they face challenges such as illiteracy and lack of internet connectivity. Developers might find ways to make the platform more accessible from low-cost mobile phones, change interfaces or modify the built-in messaging application that allows refugees to exchanges messages without additional costs.

The first hackathon will be in Cairo, Egypt, on 31 May-1 June. Then, a new batch of developers will gather in San Francisco, USA, on 7-8 June, and the third part of the Global Hack for Good will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 15-16 June.

Christopher Mikkelsen, co-founder of Refugees United, says: "Everyone has the right to know where their family is. To separated refugee families, this for many years seemed impossible. Today, we're at a tipping point where technology can help them reconnect. Now it's up to us to act and help."

Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility, Ericsson, said: "We have a long-term commitment to the refugee cause, and have been working with Refugees United since 2010 to create a mobile platform for refugees to reconnect with family and loved ones. We now want to harness some of the new innovation and technology of the developer community with this Global Hack for Good, in order to scale and amplify the great work that is already underway.

"Increasingly we see developers wanting to apply their skills for a good cause - this is a true example of Technology for Good, and we hope to see the world's most talented developers create new ideas to serve more separated families," she said.

The jury, including experts from both Ericsson and Refugees United, will select two finalists at each location. On World Refugee Day, June 20, 2013, a winner from each location will be announced. The three winners receive a trip to Kenya and will be invited to test their prototypes in the Kakuma refugee camp in late 2013.

In further confirmation of its market leadership, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) was named the worldwide leader in telecom operations management by leading industry analyst firm Gartner (Market Share Analysis: Telecom Operations Management - BSS, OSS and SDP, Worldwide, 2011-2012, April 29, 2013).

According to the report, which profiles the top 5 telecom operations management market share vendors, Ericsson ranked first worldwide for OSS (Operations Support Systems), BSS (Business Support Systems) and Next-Generation Service Delivery and Provisioning solutions and services.

Per Borgklint, Head of Ericsson's Business Unit Support Solutions, says: "Over the past two years, Ericsson has made strategic acquisitions and investments to position the company as a market leader in telecom operations management. Ericsson divests its power cable operation to NKT Cables

Ericsson has signed a conditional agreement with Danish company NKT Cables to divest its power cable operation
As a result of the agreement, about 320 employees and consultants, primarily based in Sweden, will transfer to NKT Cables
The value of the transaction is SEK 250 million and closing is expected during the beginning of the third quarter, 2013

The transaction is subject to relevant regulatory approvals.

NKT Cables is one of the largest power cable manufacturers in Europe. Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) believes that the power cable operation that currently resides within business unit Networks has potential to realize greater leverage and scale within NKT Cables where it will be core business.

The net sales for the power cable operation in 2012 was approximately SEK 1.5 billion.

The current best estimate is that the transaction will generate a net loss of approximately SEK -100 million and will, with current time plan, negatively impact business unit Networks' operating income in the third quarter, 2013.

As a result of the agreement NKT Cables will take over a factory in Falun, Sweden.

Thuraya's circuit-switched core network upgraded to support modern, high-quality telecommunication services
Agreement includes advanced billing mediation system, plus support services for five years

Mobile satellite services operator Thuraya has selected Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) as the sole vendor for its circuit-switched core network. Under the agreement, Ericsson will upgrade the Thuraya circuit-switched core network, implement an advanced billing mediation solution and provide support services for five years.

Thuraya's satellite network has always provided consistent connectivity in remote locations. The core network upgrade - including a hardware upgrade of Thuraya's Mobile Switching Center (MSC), and hardware and software enhancements for the Home Location Register (HLR), Operation Support Systems (OSS) and Multi Mediation platform - will give subscribers greater access to telecommunication services wherever they are and provide Thuraya with additional capacity to handle future growth.

The integration and implementation of Ericsson's billing mediation solution will enable Thuraya to handle all customers, partners and services in a streamlined, convergent system, reducing network complexity. Ericsson support services ensure that the network will be running efficiently and smoothly for the next five years.
