In support of World Refugee Day, the Refugees United reconnection platform is now made available to thousands of families via a toll-free line and a free simple dial-code application in Kenya with Safaricom, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with Vodacom

Safaricom will support a series of awareness activities, including SMS campaigns for the two largest refugee camps in Kenya, Dadaab and Kakuma

Vodacom will launch a new hotline for service assistance in DRC

Global Hackathon winners to be announced during a Google Hangout following developer contests in Cairo, Nairobi and Silicon Valley

With more than 43 million people forcibly displaced globally due to draught, conflict, or disaster, the need for a service to reconnect separated families is as pressing as ever. Nearly one million displaced people are in Kenya alone. Today, Refugees United and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), along with Safaricom and Vodacom, are taking a groundbreaking step toward reaching the goal of connecting one million refugees on the Refugees United platform by 2015.

Using a free dial code and toll-free lines from Safaricom, displaced people in Kenya will be able to access the family reconnection platform invented by Refugees United. Additionally, Vodacom is launching a similar service in DRC.

Refugees United is a free, mobile and online platform that allows people to search for missing family members, friends, and relatives on a safe and anonymous basis. Until now the platform was only accessible via a computer or internet-enabled mobile phone. It will now be available through a toll-free line and via a simple dial-code system, just like users know it from mobile banking, for example.

Christopher Mikkelsen, co-founder of Refugees United, says: "Everyone has the right to know where their family is. Thanks to Ericsson and operator partners like Safaricom and Vodacom DRC, we can empower refugees to take the search for missing loved ones into their own hands. Now, families can simply call our toll free line or dial a simple short code from their mobile phone to start the search for long lost family members or relatives."

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said: "Millions of families have been separated as they flee violence and war in their home countries. Refugees United empowers separated family members to take the search for missing loved ones into their own hands."

"This initiative has the power to transform the nature of family reconnection for generations to come. It is an example of how mobile technology is truly changing the lives of people on the African continent for good. We are looking for innovative ways to get this to scale, and partnerships are key to success," says Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Vice President, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson.

Leveraging the ubiquitous nature of simple mobile phones across Kenya and DRC, the new, simple ways of accessing the Refugees United family reconnection platform will serve many more thousands of families in the search for their missing loved ones. Ericsson and Refugees United have set a goal to reach one million users on the platform by the end of 2015.

In the run-up to World Refugee Day, Ericsson and Refugees United hosted a Global Hack for Good" in Cairo, Nairobi and Silicon Valley, where developers were tasked with a challenge of coding applications to ensure that the platform is accessible to families living in refugee camps and remote areas. The overall winner of this global Hack for Good will be announced during a Google Hangout on June 20th at 15:00 CET.

Join the Hangout here.

NOTES TO EDITORS

About Refugees United

Refugees United, www.refunite.org is a tech non-profit with the mission of reconnecting separated families. The Refugees United service is accessible via a computer or any entry-level mobile phone and is free of charge. Users provide only the amount of information that they themselves find safe to share, which give them the opportunity of staying anonymous. Www.refunite.org is available in multiple languages and contains searchable profiles of more than 180,000 users.

Collaborating with large mobile network operators like Safaricom in Kenya and Vodacom in DRC, Refugees United is able to leverage the mobile platform free of charge to families in some of the world's most refugee prone countries. Refugees United also collaborates with Kenya Red Cross Society and the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. Ericsson supports Refugees United as main technology partner.

www.refunite.org
www.facebook.com/refunite

VIDEO

The Story of Refugees United

The story of Estelle

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

PHOTOS

www.facebook.com/refunite

www.flickr.com/ericsson_images

Ericsson is a world-leading provider of communications technology and services.
An Ericsson report shows that due to advances in technology, and industry efforts to reduce energy consumption the ICT sector as a whole is unlikely to account for more than 2 percent of the total global carbon footprint.

The use of ICT is increasing rapidly; in the Ericsson Mobility Report it is predicted that mobile data will grow 12-fold between 2012 and 2018. This ICT expansion helps economic growth and development, and makes the world a more accessible, open and democratic place. Does it, however, also mean an equally dramatic increase in energy use and carbon emissions?

The new Ericsson Energy and Carbon Report shows that even with the dramatic growth predicted for ICT, the sector as a whole is unlikely to account for more than 2 percent of the total global carbon footprint. This is largely due to advances in technology, and industry efforts to reduce energy consumption. The report also looks at absolute growth in terms of energy use, and outlines how the Networked Society with all its connected devices will affect energy use and carbon footprint. It also describes how ICT can provide transformative solutions to offset total global CO2 emissions from other sectors.

Ulf Olsson, Mats Persson and Claes Cegrell

Just a couple of years ago, the concept of allowing third-party access to operator assets was practically unheard of in the telecom industry. Today, the picture is quite different. Service exposure is about to create a whole new set of business possibilities for operators, developers and content providers.

Service exposure, exposing assets through APIs, is nothing new. Some operators have been developing solutions through service exposure for a number of years already. And the Networked Society brings with it the next generation of solutions for service exposure.

Ericsson’s concept of service exposure is about making it possible for the players in the Networked Society to access operator assets in a way that is simple and in a way that generates revenue for everyone involved. Service exposure makes assets available to developers, enterprises and service providers, so that new applications, bundles, products and services can be created to support many different business models and user needs as they continue to evolve.

Service exposure will bring recognition for operators as a partner, and a partner that simplifies the job of developers and provides value to the service provider.

Through service exposure operators will lead the way to service enablement, bringing stakeholders from the telecoms industry together with other industries to create combined cross-functional solutions that are of value to users and enterprises.

The upgrade extends the long-standing partnership between TrueVisions and Ericsson in enabling high-quality television services for viewers in Southeast Asia.

Vichai Sernvongsat, CTO, TrueVisions, says: "We have a strong commitment to our viewers to deliver high-quality content from across Thailand and around the world. As part of that, we place a huge amount of importance on picture quality and overall experience. Our long-established partnership with Ericsson left us in no doubt that this upgrade to our existing system would provide the quality and reliability we need to provide more high-definition services to our subscribers. We are pleased to benefit from Ericsson's expertise in delivering market-leading next generation solutions."

TrueVisions selected Ericsson's VPC/ EN8100 MPEG -2 encoding lineup for the technology refresh and VPC/ EN8190 encoder lineup for the expansion of HD MPEG-4 AVC services, gaining more than six extra channels per transponder. Offering major advances in performance and bit-rate reductions, Ericsson's compression solutions enable operators to reduce transmission opex, launch additional new services within existing transmission bandwidths, and to decrease running costs through reduced power and cooling requirements.

Ward Hansford, Head of APAC region, TV Compression Business, Ericsson, says: "We are increasingly moving towards an all-digital, all-HD world. We know from Ericsson's 2012 ConsumerLab report that there is significant demand for high quality - 41 percent of consumers surveyed were willing to pay for high-definition content. As high-definition continues to gain momentum across the Asia Pacific region, we are providing the solutions that enable operators to meet the increasing consumer demand for superior TV experiences and enhanced picture quality. We continue to act as a trusted partner for operators throughout the APAC region with our unique product portfolio that enables HD today and provides seamless expansion in the future."

NOTES TO EDITORS

Ericsson EN8100 MPEG-2 SD encoder module

Ericsson EN8190 MPEG-4 AVC HD encoder module

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is a world-leading provider of communications technology and services.
Asia Pacific debut of a number of new Ericsson video solutions

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) will welcome guests to its ‘Ericsson TV LIVE’ event at Broadcast Asia 2013, Asia’s largest integrated show for the pro-audio, film and TV industries (Room 5M8-01/02). As well as the opportunity to view demonstrations of a number of next-generation solutions that will be on show in the Asia Pacific region for the first time, visitors will be able to hear from a number of Ericsson TV experts as they take to the stage to discuss the changing media landscape and the challenges and requirements faced in meeting evolving consumer demand.

According to a March 2013 study by Digital TV Research, pay-TV revenues in Asia Pacific will be $12 billion higher in 2018 ($43.9 billion total) than in 2012. In fact, the report estimates that pay TV revenues (through subscriptions and on-demand) will grow by $2.1 billion in 2013 alone to $33.9 billion. With rapid digital conversion and a continually growing number of video-enabled mobile devices comes increased consumer demand for next-generation services, and new players competing with traditional broadcasters for viewers and subscribers. Demonstrations and presentations at Ericsson TV LIVE at Broadcast Asia will show how Ericsson is responding to these major trends, enabling operators to effectively manage, deliver and monetize the next generation of TV Anywhere services.

"The TV and media industry in the Asia Pacific region continues to boom, but we are at an important stage in the market’s growth, with digital penetration and pay-TV revenues rapidly rising, as well as the requirement to meet the challenges of today’s connected consumer," said Ward Hansford, Head of APAC region, TV Compression Business, Ericsson. "Ericsson TV LIVE at Broadcast Asia provides the perfect opportunity for our TV experts to meet with broadcasters and operators and explore how we can help enable them to become more profitable, productive and ultimately, successful in their business."

Ericsson TV LIVE offers a number of opportunities to meet the company’s TV experts, via a combination of one-to-one conversations, live demonstrations of Ericsson’s portfolio of solutions, as well as presentations and seminars on the central stage.

Visitors will be able to meet key members of the senior Ericsson team and experience the company’s latest cutting-edge TV solutions designed to enable efficient video-centric networks and drive service evolution of TV in a multi-screen world. Highlights of the Ericsson TV LIVE area will include the Asia Pacific debut of:

The AVP 4000, a high performance compression platform which raises the bar for efficiency and flexibility in the delivery of TV services over all networks. Powered by Ericsson’s first-ever in-house developed programmable video processing chip, it is a unique single platform addressing multiple applications, regardless of codec, resolution or network.

LTE Broadcast – Ericsson’s unique end-to-end broadcast solution for video delivery over LTE networks. Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution will transform the costs and efficiency of delivering high quality TV and video experiences over mobile networks, to all devices. It comprises three technology standards:

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) – the new video compression standard promises to half the bandwidth required to transport video content compared to today’s leading implementation

MPEG DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)) – simplifies and standardizes the delivery of video to all consumer devices, ensuring a better quality of service, greater efficiency and opening opportunities for monetization

eMBMS (Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) – is a 3GPP standard, it enables mobile networks to offer broadcast/multicast services dynamically to offload issues of popular content in dense consumption scenarios, reducing the cost of service delivery over the radio network and for backhaul.

Operator CDN, the Ericsson Media Delivery Network, which is uniquely designed to unite the delivery of managed and unmanaged content over fixed and mobile networks.

There will also be live demonstrations of MPEG-DASH adaptive streaming and Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV). Additional demonstrations include state-of-the-art multi-screen user interfaces for TV Anywhere experiences, enabling operators to meet consumer need by delivering rich, blended services on all screens, as well as the third generation of Ericsson’s market-leading Content Management System. The system now offers live TV Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) management, as well as time-shifted TV and distribution management and a focus on advanced metadata management.

Attendees will also be able to discuss the Ericsson Certification for TV Professionals, Ericsson’s own program that has been designed to enable TV professionals to have the knowledge and requisite skillsets to adjust to the rapid development in broadcast solutions and technologies.

In addition to on-stage presentations during Ericsson TV LIVE, attendees to Broadcast Asia and CommunicAsia 2013 can also hear from Ericsson speakers during the main conference programs:

Broadcast Asia demonstration of encoding system shows efficient delivery of next-generation video

Responds to growing consumer demand for the very highest quality TV services

System comprises Ericsson encoders and modular receivers

MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. (MEASAT) has begun trials with Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) to demonstrate the ability to provide live Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV) video contribution over MEASAT’s satellite network. As UHDTV gains momentum and operators explore how it can become part of the future roadmap, there remains the challenge of enabling necessary workflows through the entire broadcasting ecosystem to the home.

Ericsson and MEASAT are demonstrating a live solution at Broadcast Asia 2013, Asia’s largest representative, integrated show for the pro-audio, film and TV industries. The system shows how UHDTV premium coverage such as live sport can be broadcast today.

"MEASAT looks forward to supporting UHDTV across Asia, beginning with this trial on our high-powered MEASAT-3 satellite. UHDTV will take consumer expectations for high quality picture to a new level. We are therefore ensuring that the necessary solutions and systems are in place to deliver the next generation of TV services that meet evolving consumer demand," said Jarod Lopez, Vice President, Broadcast Sales, MEASAT. "We are excited about the UHDTV trial using Ericsson’s reliable and efficient solution and will ensure that we have the infrastructure in place to distribute and broadcast 4K content over satellite in a reliable and robust manner."

MEASAT has a reach that covers over 150 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Australia, representing 80% of the world’s population. The Ericsson solution that it has in place for the UHDTV trial uses Ericsson’s AVP 2000 contribution encoders and RX8200 advanced modular receivers.

"We understand that with consumer demand for higher quality comes greater pressure on broadcasters to increase service velocity while maintaining the high standards that are expected," said Dr. Giles Wilson, Head of TV Compression Business, Ericsson. "This trial with MEASAT demonstrates how content providers and broadcasters can simply and effectively build their UHDTV content libraries so that they are ready for commercial launch in the coming years. Ericsson is a pioneer of next-generation TV services and is committed to enabling the industry to meet consumer demand, rather than chase it."

Ericsson’s AVP 2000 and RX8200 solutions deliver the highest levels of performance including 4:2:2, 10bit support as well as p50/60 support. As they use MPEG-4 AVC encoding technology, the same devices can also be re-used for HD and SD contribution applications. Ericsson has also employed its Simulsync technology to ensure that the delivery of the UHDTV images remains perfectly in sync.

Industry’s first 750W Hybrid Regulated Ratio DC/DC converter

Quarter-brick module delivers high power density of 31.12W/cm3 per cm3 (508W per cubic inch)

Highly-innovative regulated-ratio topology module delivers high-efficiency flat-curve characteristics of up to 97%

Ericsson has unveiled an industry first with its new hybrid-regulated topology. The new PKM-NH platform is optimized for datacom board applications that have a 52V/54V system bus distribution and require regulated high-power quarter-brick-format intermediate bus converters able to deliver up to 750W.

To meet the challenge of packing a 750W regulated DC/DC converter in a quarter-brick format, Ericsson has developed an innovative proprietary topology known as Hybrid Regulated Ratio (HRR). The topology combines two power-control methods – voltage-regulation and ratio-regulation – resulting in high performance across the input voltage ranges used in datacom systems, which are usually between 40V to 60V.

The HRR topology implemented in the Ericsson PKM-NH platform delivers an excellent response to line or load transients and guarantees the output voltage will remain stable and immune from voltage deviation due to power disturbances on the system bus voltage. This means it retains intermediate bus voltage integrity within the tolerance band required by power system architects.

"The increased demand for high-power DC/DC converters in the datacom industry is pushing power density to unprecedented levels, requiring designers to explore new possibilities in power conversion technology," said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director, Ericsson Power Modules. "The PKM4717NH is a breakthrough product and is the first based on the truly innovative Hybrid Regulated Ratio technology developed by Ericsson. Offering a power density of 31.12W/cm3 (508W/in3), the PKM4717NH is the most advanced regulated DC/DC power module for datacom applications."

New Ericsson consumer research on smartphone users shows that network performance is key to ensuring subscriber loyalty and low churn

Improving user satisfaction with network performance increases operator revenue over subscriber lifetime and ensures a competitive advantage

Smartphone users sometimes express concerns about the experience they get from current network performance

Improved network performance is vital for ensuring subscriber loyalty among smartphone users, and provides operators with a significant competitive advantage. These findings come from a new report from Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) ConsumerLab, which also shows that current mobile networks don't always live up to user expectations. Up to 60 percent of smartphone users say they experience problems at least once a week and just over 30 percent encounter problems every day.

The ConsumerLab research looked into the factors that influence users' loyalty to operator brands, says Anders Kälvemark, Senior Advisor, Consumer Insights at Ericsson ConsumerLab.

"Our analysis shows that network performance is currently the prime driver of consumer loyalty to an operator brand, followed by value for money," he says. "That is almost three times the impact of the handset/device offering, for example. Consumer satisfaction with these factors has to be improved to affect loyalty in a positive way.

"Generally, consumers expect more from the services than what they receive. When service requirements such as reasonable waiting times and sufficient coverage are not met - especially when people are in transit - it is natural that consumer loyalty suffers."

To ensure a good user experience, content needs to appear on the screen quickly. Relatively low levels of satisfaction with network performance are often a result of smartphone users becoming tired of waiting.

However, it is not enough for operators simply to improve network performance in the hope that customers will notice. Communication is essential for improving customer perceptions. Users need to be aware that things have changed for there to be an impact on satisfaction levels, and for this to improve their loyalty to the operator.

The report also shows that a satisfied user is generally less likely to switch operator, leading to higher operator revenue over the user's lifetime.

About the report:

Ericsson ConsumerLab conducted online interviews with 1,000 smartphone users, aged 18 to 64, in each of the following 12 markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US.

Loyalty was measured using the Net Promoter Score (NPS) metric.

All ConsumerLab reports can be found at www.ericsson.com/consumerlab

Link to report:
www.ericsson.com/res/docs/2013/consumerlab/keeping-smartphone-users-loyal.pdf

NOTES TO EDITORS

Ericsson Mobility Report: www.ericsson.com/ericsson-mobility-report

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson is a world-leading provider of communications technology and services.

Ericsson partnering with Entel to deploy Connect To Learn in Chile

Rural Chilean students and their teachers benefit from connectivity to a 21st century education through a cloud-based computing solution and mobile broadband technology

Program for online cultural exchange is also implemented, bringing teachers and students together with global peers

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Entel announce the launch of Connect To Learn, an initiative that offers quality education for rural students, in three schools in Chile that previously did not have access to technology in education. Connect To Learn in partnership with Millennium Promise and the Earth Institute at Columbia University is using the latest technology to improve educational opportunities for rural students, especially girls.

Through Connect To Learn, mobile broadband connectivity has been implemented in the Arturo Prat Chacón secondary school as well as two primary schools, all located in rural Ninhue, in the Bío Bío Region of southern Chile. The program in the Arture Prat Chacón school also includes online educational resources, a cloud-computing solution in a low-maintenance and easy-to-use model and relevant training for teachers. The technology deployed gives students and teachers access to 21st-century educational tools and resources, and the ability to connect to other schools around the world to foster collaborative learning, cross-cultural understanding and global awareness.

Manuel Araya, Corporate Affairs Manager, Entel, says, "With Connect To Learn, students and teachers benefit from access to global news, information and the latest educational content, and can collaborate with fellow students and teachers around the world, despite their remote location."

Entel is providing optimized 3G connectivity to the selected schools to ensure good connectivity, as well as free Internet connections.

Carla Belitardo, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility, Ericsson Latin America, says, "This initiative demonstrates our commitment to enabling our vision for a Networked Society in Chile and in Latin America. Mobile broadband is a key enabler for access to a quality education in all communities, even the most rural. Delivering cloud-based computing services and connecting them is a major step toward bringing quality education."

Since 2010, Connect To Learn has been deployed to help students in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Brazil Senegal and Djibouti helping students access quality learning resources for a 21st-century education.

School-To-School Connections

Through Connect To Learn, Entel and Ericsson are also introducing School-To-School Connections, a flagship program, pioneered by co-founders Millennium Promise and the Earth Institute. High school students at the Juan de Mairena Institute in San Sebastian de los Reyes, Spain, created their very own global classroom, connecting through a video call session with students from Arturo Prat Chacón High School, located in Ninhue, southern Chile, as part of the School-To-School Connections partnership program facilitated by the Connect To Learn initiative.

The program connects classrooms in rural and urban communities around the world to foster cross-cultural learning and cultivate global awareness, understanding, and collaboration.

The goal is that the School-To-School Connections program will help create a sense of commonality among young people and a sense of shared responsibility for tackling the global challenges we all face. In 2011, with School-To-School Connections in mind, Connect To Learn commissioned a team from Columbia University Teachers College to create a set of curricular resources based on the Millennium Development Goals in order to support shared lesson planning between teachers at partnered schools and collaborative learning among their students. Video calls and emails help facilitate their work together and build relationships among participants.

The classes shared their thoughts on "ensuring environmental sustainability" and what it means in each of their countries, asking questions, clapping, laughing and nodding their heads. They also talked about the similarities and differences in the types of activities that take place in each of their communities.

NOTES TO EDITORS

Download high-resolution photos and broadcast-quality video at www.ericsson.com/press

Ericsson Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility - 2012 Report:
http://www.ericsson.com/res/thecompany/docs/corporate-responsibility/2012/2012_corporate_responsibility_and_sustainability_report.pdf

How ICT is changing the classroom:
http://www.ericsson.com/news/121023-how-ict-is-changing-the-classroom_244159017_c

Report: Learning and Education in the Networked Society
http://www.ericsson.com/res/docs/2012/learning-education-in-networked-society-report-201121022.pdf

About the Connect To Learn initiative
Connect To Learn is a public-private partnership between Ericsson, the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Millennium Promise along with operator and other corporate and individual partners.
