Introduction

When Apple releases a New Shiny Object, the web goes abuzz. Individual
reviews of products are great and most of us have our go-to sources.
I'm a big fan of Gizmodo myself, but I'll tend to Google "Shiny Object
Review" regardless and get some other thoughts and opinions to round out
my own secondhand assessments. I've never been totally comfortable
with getting only one sources' thoughts; what if their one review gadget
was a dud in some way? should their negative review apply to everyone? Point
being, when
assessing my gadgets, I like the quantitative approach over the qualitative one.

With first-gen Apple hardware, surveying a
pool of stalwart early adopters could better inform us majority. (I am an early adopter of some things, but Apple gadgets are not one of them.) I'm
not exactly sure when Apple is planning on another brand new Object, but
if this little experiment has proven useful for anyone in their
assessment of the iPad, I may run another for the eventual second
generation.

So here are the results to the survey. To reiterate: this is not a review of the iPad, this is just an informal look at a few iPad owners' experiences and opinions from their first few days of ownership. Please excuse the generic and poorly formatted pie charts; there was enough data to manage that caring about appearances was quickly
eclipsed by the need to output.

The answers are presented in the order
in which they were asked, and some are grouped by theme or
commonality. There were 16 total respondents, and all but 4 questions were
mandatory (the non-charted answers were open-ended optional questions.)

Some basics

Hard drive choices were almost perfectly split, and only 3 of 16 users aren't using any accessories with their iPad. But as you'll see in later answers, some who are using cases highly recommend them.

Apps, apps, apps

While some people (2) haven't paid for any apps, every user has
downloaded at least one. 11 respondents have downloaded at least 11
free apps, while only 4 have downloaded 11 or more paid apps.

In terms of usage, Safari (5) and Netflix (3) are the most popular, together constituting half of the respondents' most used apps. But in terms of preference, responses are all over the board; only Netflix got multiple responses (2).

Usage
Most everyone is using their iPad for many of the devices upfront capabilities: for overall usage, all 16 responded with email, 15 said web, 14 said video, 14 said games, 12 said books, 10 said photos, and 9 said writing. Music, magazines, and iWorks all received 8 nods, just 50% of the respondent pool.

I find the lesser responses about music particularly interesting. It makes sense that a larger tethered machine like the iPad is less convenient for listening to music compared to, say, an iPhone. A lot of conversation about the iPad though categorizes it as a device for consumption (at least contrasted against its ability to produce). This could be a potential area of distinction and differentiation for the iPad, though more data would need to be provided to analyze any further.

New behaviors

Here are (synthesized) answers to an open-ended question about new behaviors:

Has owning an iPad resulted in any new behaviors, and if so, what are they? (For example, do you now read newspapers when you didn't before?)

More books

More magazines

Started reading comics

Study Linux more

Read the news more (x2)

Read newspapers more (x4)

Cook more

Doodle more

Wasting more time

Watching TV in bed (x2)

Checking weather more often

Checking stocks more often

Read RSS (x2)

Less use of other computer (x2)

Nothing new

Stay awake reading in bed

Blogging more

More time on the web

Read more in general

More games

Immediately, reading pops out as a commonality, though sources are wide-varying: books, magazines, comics, programming languages, news, newspapers, RSS, and web surfing. Apple and their partners are touting the iPad as a revolutionary device for the news and newspaper industry, which I've often heard disputed in iPad reviews online. However, you can't argue with the fact that as a platform, the iPad serves up information in a way that is leading to new consumption behaviors.

I find it interesting too that so many respondents are consuming more information in bed specifically (a bit more on this in the next sections) and that these behaviors - watching TV and reading - are longer-form. I would imagine reading books or watching TV on the iPhone in bed is less than ideal (I've certainly never done either in my 2+ years of iPhone ownership), so this may be another area for the iPad to differentiate itself: where you use it, compared to the iPhone or a computer. (Apple alludes to this in their print ads that show off this 'casual computing' behavior.)

Where

Home and office unsurprisingly dominate place of use. Most respondents are using their iPad either in a sitting position (chair / bench, couch) or sitting / leaning / lying down in bed. I was also glad to see one respondent write-in and admit their toilet use, if not dismayed at others' sheepishness about their own admission.

What's interesting to me is how transferable these answers could be to a question about books instead of iPads, and how this batch of answers really drives home the point about the iPad's niche as a legitimate platform for both video & non-web-native text (i.e. books, magazines, newspapers). That dual usage coupled with great portability constitutes serious 'casual computing'. Personally, it's this realization that has gotten me genuinely excited about tablet computing.

Attachment
The variance here is interesting. The same number of respondents (4) keep their iPad with them for only 1-10 hours per week as do those who keep the iPad with them for 60 hours or more. Though it makes sense that if you bring your iPad to work with you, you're likely automatically in the 60+ hours group.

Performance
Battery life, multitouch, and indoors viewing are all positive, as is the general performance. (Anecdotally, I've heard the sentiment reiterated about performance from users IRL and around the web.) Display outdoors is also generally positive, but connectivity is an issue for some (3). Most respondents find typing to be good or better (11), though 4 are on the fence and 1 feels negatively about it. This is interesting because typing was one of the public's early questions about the iPad, but it seems respondents are generally comfortable and/or satisfied with the experience.

Screen size and body size are almost unanimously 'great'. Weight is a slightly polarizing feature, apparently; 3 respondents feel negatively about it. I've heard generally good things about the iPad weight - that it's noticeably lighter than laptops and even netbooks. But I'll let this point rest since it's so subjective.

Flash
Probably the most talked-about feature - or lacking feature - of both the iPad and the iPhone: Flash. I'm actually surprised how many people say the lack of Flash has affected them (6); I had thought it would be less. With the <strike>rift</strike> <strike>gulf</strike> chasm between Adobe and Apple only getting wider, this will not only continue to be a polarizing issue for the iPad, but for all of the dev world.

3G envy
Looking back at the earlier questions about when and where iPad owners are using it, these responses make sense: enough people use the iPad in non-wifi areas to pine for 3G coverage. Something to keep in mind when assessing personal usage of an iPad.

Expectations
All 16 respondents say the iPad has met or exceeded their expectations. From a scientific method perspective, we can't assume "met expectations" necessarily means the same as "satisfied"; we can only assume whatever their expectations were going into their ownership - objective or otherwise - were met or exceeded. Nonetheless, a telling indicator from a pool of iPad'ers.

Final thoughts

Here are synthesized responses to some open-ended questions from the survey (multiple similar responses indicted by multiplier in parentheses):

Any recommendations or tips for other iPad users?

AirVideo is a must-have

Buy a case for gripping

Buy a docking case if you want to dock

Try Instapaper for web reading

Buy the Apple case

Read the user guide

There clearly seems to be a need for an iPad case, be it for gripping, docking, or general protection.

Any recommendations for those who don't own an iPad?

Wait for 3G

Wait for an OS update

Try it out in person first

Buy one (3x)

Great entertainment system for kids when traveling

"Buy one" was a repeated suggestion, as were calls to wait for various updates. But some insight from a user with kids: the iPad apparently makes great entertainment for them on trips.

Any final thoughts or comments on the iPad?

Lots of potential (x2)

It will change everything about casual computing

Keynote is terrible and a huge step backwards in presentation software

Syncing is terrible

The wifi is glitchy

Needs more apps

Looking forward to forward-facing camera

Looking forward to multi-tasking

Developers need to migrate to HTML5

Buy the case both for protection and standing options

It's given me separation anxiety

My personal takeaway from this last question: if one is interested in an iPad, wait. These responses echo previous answers from this survey, as well as other anecdotal evidence I've seen around the web. "Lots of potential", "It will change...", "Looking forward to..." are indicators to me that Apple has yet again started on the right innovating foot, but that they have much to improve upon before the iPad truly begins to live up to the hype.

-----

Thanks again to everyone who retweeted the link to the survey, and of course a huge thanks to the 16 respondents who filled it out. (I forgot to decide anonymity or disclosure in the survey itself, so no respondent's Twitter names here.)

And if you're interested, you can download the raw data here as an .xls file.

As I've blogged previously, I'm looking to move away from the iPhone to an Android set, likely an HTC model. Before I get into the meat of this personal transition analysis, let's just get something out of the way: I'm over the iPhone, but I absolutely acknowledge and respect the things it (and Apple) brought both to my life and to the mobile world at large, at least in the US. Despite my grumblings about Apple IRL, this is not a knee-jerk decision, nor or is a hater maneuver. Not only does my iPhone and it's crappy carrier give me grief on an almost daily basis, but Apple is heading down a path that I simply can't support, least of all with my wallet. In overhearing friends and colleagues, I also feel like other iPhone users are in the same boat but don't know where to turn post-iPhone; maybe this will help inform (I'll follow up once I've made the switch as well). It's been a great ride, but now it's over.

Back to the analysis.

I decided to first do a full audit of my most used & useful iPhone apps, and find their Android equivalents. I'm leaving out all nonessential apps, both core and downloaded. My four iPhone docked apps - Phone, Messages, Mail, & Safari - are all being assumed for Android.

As soon as I started, I was immediately reminded of Google's bizarre decision to hold back Android OS and app information on the web. Not only do you need to go through a third-party website to search the Marketplace (I found AndroLib, AndroidZoom, and AppBrain), but I couldn't even find a web resource that listed Android's core OS apps. I remember hearing someone gripe about the marketplace being a bit of a mess compared to the App Store. But the fact that the Android website directs you to find a physical handset for information baffles me. Isn't this supposed to be THE cloud company? I do have my ladyfriend's phone for reference but after getting locked out of it for the 10th time, I decided to stick with the web for search.

The process for my analysis was to:

first go to the original source, to see if there is a direct 1:1, official Android version of the iPhone app

where there was none, search the third-party marketplace sites and Google the term "[name] app android" to see what would come up

(Anti-anxiety medication is required for using the third-party sites, so Googling became more and more appealing as this went on.)

This process - and the crappy marketplace sites - also got me thinking about the approval process for Android, and realizing that this foray was going to require a new mindset for app search and usage. I found this great NPR post about their jumping into Android development for the NPR app, comparing it to their iPhone development experience. It's a great refresher on the apt 'cathedral vs. bazaar' metaphor, which really applies to the user experience too. It certainly encapsulates my thinking on the issue.

With a plan in place, I began the research, breaking out the apps as they currently live on my iPhone, which are basically grouped by personal importance.

----------

Round 1: "Most Essential" / Home screen apps

iPhone

Android

FlickIt (Flickr uploader app)

(several)

Calendar

Calendar

Notes

(several)

Weather Channel

News and Weather (built in)

Maps

Maps

CityTransit (NYC transit app)

(a couple of options)

New York Times

Newspapers (maybe)

Read It Later (offline caching app)

Paperdroid

Facebook

Facebook

Foursquare

Foursquare

Tweetdeck

Tweetdeck (soon)

Ambiance (white noise app)

Ambiance (soon)

Right off the bat, I found my most essential apps addressed by Android developers. The often-opened CityTransit app of NYC's MTA lines & advisories has a few comparatives, as does offline caching app Read It Later. Facebook and Foursquare each have their own official apps, naturally, and while Tweetdeck and Ambiance are each citing "coming soon", there are currently a few alternatives for each.

Two major asides that arose from thinking about this batch. First, I was reminded how much I'm looking forward to native Google service apps, especially Google Calendar, which I use both personally and professionally. It's been said often that the difference between your wanting or needing an iPhone and an Android set can easily be determined by which company's services you use most. I loathe iTunes, use a PC at home, and the only time I use a Mac is for work, at which I very rarely sync to my phone. But I use Google like a maniac throughout every day, so a tightly integrated GPhone makes more sense for me.

The other theme that I noticed was how little I cared about apps for web-based information, like the New York Times app. iPhone does not do a great job of RSS and Safari-based web access (I might throw 'general connectivity' to the mix, but that's due in large part to AT&T; wifi tends to provide). On Amber's Nexus One, both functions work swimmingly. So whether or not the Times ever gets their act together for an Android app, or if the Newspapers app even fits the bill, doesn't concern me. I'll have a much easier time consuming their content through Android's lighter means, and not a bloated crash-prone third-party app.

Round 1 Conclusion: A

----------

Round 2: Games

iPhone

Android

Scrabble

Scrabble

2 Across

Crosswords

PuzzleQuest

(n/a)

Low-hanging fruit first: Scrabble is available from the official source, and I'm fine with taking PuzzleQuest off of the iPhone and onto the DS (they had dubious iterative launches on the iPhone anyway, and the sequel is out next month and I want it now). There are several other games on my iPhone, but I've either finished them or grown bored of them, so there's no need to carry them over.

But while no games are considered first-screen apps, this second screen is considered my phones right-hand man, for two reasons: gaming on the iPhone is awesome, and 2 Across is my hands-down favorite and most-used app of all time. I've been in touch with Eliza Block, 2 Across' developer. I asked if she had any plans to port the app for Android (it's a perfect daily NYT crossword downloader and the interface can't be beat). An unfortunate resounding no; she works for Apple now. I'm pretty sure the paid version of Crosswords will do the trick but I'm not certain. And if it doesn't, it looks like there aren't any other viable options for daily Times crosswords. This could be a major problem.

Generally speaking, I am concerned about this area of Android development. The iPhone is beginning to really flourish as a gaming platform (Street Fighter IV isn't perfect but it is kind of amazing), and as more casual, portable games increase in popularity, so will their mobile adaptability. It will be up to developers to decide on which OS to spend their energy. Fortunately, I believe the future here for Android is bright, and I'm willing to gamble my mobile use on it.

Round 2 Conclusion: C (possible B, depending on Crosswords successes)

----------

Round 3: Periodic use

iPhone

Android

iPod

Music app

Zipcar

(n/a)

Air Sharing (file storage)

(USB cable)

ESPN ScoreCenter

(several)

GoodGuide (product guide)

(n/a)

Goodreads

Goodreads (soon)

Articles (Wikipedia app)

Quickpedia

The nonexistent Zipcar and GoodGuide Android apps don't concern me in the least; Zipcar is a bit of a fail, and as my packaged goods consumption goes down so does my interest in GoodGuide. There is a core Android music app (though several sites deem it lacking, so a third-party player may be in order) and - finally! - direct file sharing via USB cable. For Wikipedia, like the Times app, I'd be fine with web-based access only, though on the web I found the recommended Quickpedia app, just in case. Goodreads has been great to have access to while roaming bookstores, but I'll have to wait for an Android port. And I'm happy to ditch the ESPN ScoreCenter app entirely for either web-based access or any other third-party sports score app.

I also stumbled upon a little bonus. While searching sports apps, I did a quick look into fantasy sports apps, a void the App Store hasn't been able to fill. While there's no official Yahoo! app to support my 2010 fantasy baseball league, I came across the aptly-named Fantasy Tracker app, which seems to integrate with Yahoo! and touts the functionality I'm looking for. I have no real expectations of it but I'm very intrigued and excited at the prospect of being able to make on-the-go last-minute fantasy team decisions.

Round 3 Conclusion: A

----------

Round 4: "Save it for later" apps

Used very infrequently, I'd still like to know that these apps are available on Android. Oh, lucky day: a native calculator and clock, official Fandango and Amazon apps, and cab4me for on-the-fly taxi services.

I can live without the other two. MenuPages is likely sufficient via the web (and even if it isn't, it's no loss), and while I love This American Life, streaming media apps never jived with me. This might be a result of a city lifestyle, but even podcasts come and go as phases in my life. So again, no big deal.

Round 4 Conclusion: A

----------

Round 5: Back burner

And buried way in the back of the iPhone are a couple of comic apps that I've already read, to which I'm waiting for updates. Comics are surprisingly fun to read on the iPhone - I'd imagine the iPad is fantastic for this - but believe me, it's better I not open the Pandora's Box of comic books on a device that makes it so easy to access and consume. They're addictive and costly enough in physical form. It's better I just pull the cord on these while I have the opportunity.

----------

There are other things Android sets will do that my iPhone won't (and will never do, since OS 4 won't fully support my 3G handset). Switching over will get me multitasking, camera flash (and probably zooming), augmented reality, well-integrated RSS & other major Google services, snappy performance, and last but certainly not least saying goodbye to AT&T.

I'll follow up in the next couple of weeks once I've made the switch; I'm currently spying the HTC Incredible. From everything I've read, heard, and experienced secondhand, here are my hypotheses for my future Android:

Verizon service will be stellar in comparison to AT&T

The HTC will perform and respond far better than my current iPhone

App discovery will continue to be murky and apps less frequently downloaded

Gaming will not manifest seriously for at least another 6 months

Non-gaming app development will dramatically increase in the next 6 months

If you have an iPad, I'd love to hear from you! If you've got 5-10 minutes, it would be super rad if you filled this out. Once I've got a good number of responses, I'll close it and publish the results.

This survey is intended for anyone who is currently using an iPad. The questions are generally batched and somewhat similar, so while it looks a little lengthy, it shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes. I'm looking for some general information on usage and opinions. Most questions are required for the sake of completion, but if you run into any problems or confusion, just leave a note in the last question, or in the comments of this blog entry.

Please feel free to direct any questions to @tabone on Twitter, or work [at] erictabone.com

Thanks in advance!

On April 3, 2010, at 3:15pm, I turn exactly 30 years old. This post
is part of a very ambitious effort to share each of the last 10 years.
Thanks to Mike and his recap of the
2000's for the inspiration.

And in an anticlimactic finish to the personal decade, 2009 was for the most part relatively uneventful. Amber and I were both fortunate enough to prosper professionally throughout our generations worst economic period, and our kitties kept us smiling for another 365 days (and vice versa). It hasn't all been lump-free gravy but all in all, it was a pretty good year.

The singular most important thing to happen to me personally was Amber accepting my (fumbled) request for her hand in marriage. I had staged a dinner out on a Saturday night and surprised her right before we left 123 Awesome Street. It was a little confusing, the situation, on account of our having spent years talking about not ever actually getting married, instead just living together forever like a pair of Europeans. But it was an itch I had felt needed scratching for a few months and decided to go for it. Writing wouldn't give the romantic aspect of the story justice, so I'll leave it at: she said yes, and we're a month away from the wedding. (Infinite thanks to my friend Lauren for helping stage a fake ring shopping session the week before, to run recon on Amber's ring tastes. Had we not done so, I would've been way, way off on my ring purchase.)

-----

Grappling with 30 has been a trip in and of itself. Writing out these major life events, putting things down on paper reminds me that things I've internalized and probably diminished do actually add up to a substantial decade of living. I certainly can't complain; I should be so lucky to have another 10 years of this fortunate life.
