Anti-Discrimination vote is a first in Ohio�s history

Colmbus, Ohio June 17—With a vote of 8 to 5, House Bill 176, the Equal Housing and Employment Act, passed out of State Government Committee in the Ohio House of Representatives. The committee vote marks the first time in Ohio’s history that a vote has occurred on legislation protecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Ohio in either chamber of the General Assembly. The only previous issue to come to a vote in the Assembly related to LGBT issues was the 2003 legislative Defense of Marriage Act (banning same-sex marriage.)

Obama talks to the talk, but will he walk the walk?

From Mark Segal of Philadelphia Gay News: I’m most likely the only writer in the LGBT media who cFrpan write this analysis. Let’s get right down to the facts, for fairness. Before last April, this writer was considered the most outspoken journalist opposing Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic primary; some said I was in the Clinton camp. At the time, I pointed out that Obama, unlike Clinton, gave few interviews to gay press, but made many statements with no follow-ups and always held out the possibility of an interview to local LGBT media until their state primary was over. The reason personal interviews are so important is that you get to follow up and not allow a candidate to just recite his/her standard stump speech; it gets the facts out there. To be sure, answering a questionnaire is not an interview: It most likely is answered by a low-level campaign staffer.

Stonewall Riots 40th Anniversary

Commemorations are being held across the world this weekend to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that launched the modern gay and lesbian rights movement. The uprising began in the morning on June 28, 1969, when New York City police officers raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. As the police began dragging some of the patrons out, members of the gay community decided to fight back, sparking three days of rioting. Dynamic Diva Fridays at Craze Night Club

PA Sen. Daylin Leach introducing marriage legislation

I have recently drafted and am shortly introducing legislation which would cause Pennsylvania to join the other states that recognize same-sex marriage.
I do so now for several reasons. Many other states are moving to consider this issue, including Maine, Vermont and DC which have passed legislation in just the past few weeks. Also, a bill banning same-sex marriage was recently introduced in the Pennsylvania State Senate and it is important to provide the legislature with a timely pro-civil rights, pro-family alternative. But mostly, I feel that every day we spend living under a law which treats an entire category of citizens as second-class, and denies them their fundamental human rights is a profound injustice.

The City of Erie and WQLN Radio bring StoryCorps to Perry Square

StoryCorps, heard on NPR’s Morning Edition, will be coming to Erie’s Perry Square from July 30th through August 22nd. StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate another’s life through listening. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have shared stories and life experiences with family, friends, and their community through StoryCorps. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to take home and share, and a copy is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

On an early morning flight from Orlando, after appearing at the 19th Annual Gay Days at Disneyworld, I was “sirred” twice by a cab driver and flight attendant. All before 7 a.m. I would have thought the brand new faux leopard Croc flats I was sporting would have thrown them off. Or that the “Gay Day” banners everywhere would have heightened their threat levels to rainbow.

This is the subtitle to the eye-opening and paradigm-bending book, “The Ethical Slut”, by D. Easton and C. Liszt. Another title I considered for this column is: “Emotional Monogamy in Non-Monogamous Relationships”, but that’s too many words. Many of my coupled clients, colleagues and friends are examining traditional heterosexual marriage-based relationships and finding them lacking. Other people, however, think that the idea of “emotional monogamy and sexual non-monogamy” is just a cop-out, a way to rationalize not being faithful to your partner.
