Husband and I now live in small Pennsylvania town and I am a pastor at a small Lutheran Church.
In fact it is slightly larger than what I was dreaming about a year ago - all signs point to possibilities for excellent ministry in this community, despite the fact that the congregation has had a few challenging years recently.

Being kind of in the middle of nowhere - though an hour from somewhere - I find myself seeking out colleagues and conversation partners... Must be time to visit with the RevGalBlogPals once again! I'm a newbie. I started my call about a week ago.
Google has cemented it trend of giving away services to nonprofits by announcing, free payment processing from Google Checkout. Speaking of free stuff and Google YouTube is letting nonprofits setup video channels free of charge. This means your nonprofit can extend your brand onto YouTube.

And if you thought online video was just fun and games, the Will it Blend videos increased sales of blenders five times.

Now as I’ve mentioned Web 2.0 isn’t a build it and they will come venture. So you need to think more about what exactly your organization is trying to accomplish, Michael Brooke calls this being a ball bearing not a beach ball.

Friday Five: Hot Town, Summer in the City...

...or town, or suburb, or hamlet, or burg, or unincorporated zone, or rural area of your choice---pretty much anywhere but the southern hemisphere, it's summer. (Australians and others, consider this an invitation to take a break from winter for a while.)

1. Favorite summer food(s) and beverage(s)
I love peaches, plums, nectarines, etc... Also hot dogs. I don't care what they are made out of, they taste divine.

2. Song that "says" summer to you. (Need not be about summer explicitly.)
"Summertime" - Will Smith Watch the Video

3. A childhood summer memory
Just sort of living in the neighborhood, from backyard to backyard, with no real concept of time. Parents didn't know where we were at all times, but i guess they trusted us. How far could we get on a 10 speed?

4. An adult summer memory
Our honeymoon last June. The "mini-moon" as we called it, was a couple relaxing days on the Eastern Shore...

5. Describe a wonderful summer day you'd like to have in the near future. (weather, location, activities)
Bonfire. We used to have some serious bonfires back in the day...

Optional: Does your place of worship do anything differently in the summer? (Fewer services, casual dress, etc.)
According to my senior pastor, "School's out? That means church is IN!"

I'm having a little bit of writer's block when it comes to this blog. I guess I just don't know what my goal of writing is; am I writing so that when a parishioner finds it (and they will...) I won't have exposed myself TOO much? Am I writing to honestly share my feelings about internship, colleagues, a new marriage, drama, siblings, theology, discernment, etc? yikes...

How bout an update? I spent yesterday with my intern cluster and the supervisors who made the effort(three). We were out on a boat and they taught me to water ski!! Actually they taught me to get dragged behind a boat until i thought my arms were gonna come out of their sockets, but I think that's the first step.
I was dead set against doing any actual work yesterday - so having to have a serious discussion about self-care, instead of actually DOING SELF-CARE, and getting out on the water, was aggravating. But, I got a little color on my skin, which makes me happy (note to self: find a dermatologist...)

I'm finishing up internship here at Suburban Mega-Church. I'm trying to be Zen about it, but I have so many mixed emotions right now - on a variety of levels. There are some amazing parishioners here, but it's not the kind of environment I really work well in. There are some unresolved staffing issues I want to address, but i don't think its my place. There's a relationship here that I think will end once I leave, and that makes me incredibly sad - but I'm learning a lot about relationships and friendship. I just need to keep busy and not think about it, and my schedule till July 29th gets more packed everyday.

Tonight jake and I will return to Confirmation Camp - The Camp in the Woods, where we first met, many moons ago. I need to see some shooting stars...

(Disclaimer: I did not write this. This is meant to be satire. Mad props go to the person that did write this, because it is very funny.)

TEN REASONS ACCORDING TO THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE WORLD, SOCIAL CUSTOM, AND THEOLOGY
WHY MEN SHOULD NOT BE ORDAINED

1. The male physical build indicates that men are more suited to tasks such as picking turnips or de-horning cattle. It would be "unnatural" for them to do other forms of work. How can we argue with nature?

2. For men who have children, their duties as ministers might detract from their responsibilities as parents. Instead of teaching their children important life skills like how to make a wiener-roasting stick, they would be off at some committee meeting or preparing a sermon. Thus these unfortunate children of ordained men would almost certainly receive less attention from their male parent.

3. According to the Genesis account, men were created before women, presumably as a prototype. It is thus obvious that men represent an experiment, rather than the crowning achievement of creation.

4. Men are overly prone to violence. They are responsible for the vast majority of crime in our country, especially violent crime. Thus they would be poor role models, as well as being dangerously unstable in positions of leadership.

5. In the New Testament account, the person who betrayed Jesus was a man. His lack of faith and ensuing punishment stands as a symbol of the subordinate position that all men should take. It is expected that even ordained men would be unable to withstand the natural male tendency to buckle under pressure.

6. Jesus didn't ordain men. He didn't ordain any women either, but two wrongs don't make a right.

7. Men are simply too emotional to be ordained. Their conduct at football matches, in the army, at political conventions and especially at Promise Keepers Rallies amply demonstrates this tendency.

8. Many men are simply too handsome to lead public worship. They could prove to be a distraction to the women in the congregation!

9. To be an ordained pastor is to nurture and strengthen a whole congregation. But these are not traditional male roles. Throughout the history of Christianity, women have been considered to be not only more skilled than men at nurturing, but also more fervently attracted to it. If men try to fit into this nurturing role, our young people might grow up with severe gender role confusion.

10. If the Church is the Bride of Christ, then it goes without saying that all ordained leaders should be female. It just makes theological sense!

I went for a walk and a prayer this morning. I love walking in the woods and talking to God, not outloud usually, as there are other folks walking these paths too... Today, I was praying along, and thanking God for this beautiful day, and said "God, it would be really cool if I saw a snake while I'm walking." (sidenote: I think snakes are awesome and neat.) As soon as I had said this, I glanced down on the path, and saw this little guy in the leaves.

(Not this actually snake, but one that looked just like it!)

More proof that God answers prayers. Yeah, this was a strange prayer. But upon my reflection, isn't that just how God works? I was praying for something miraculous, a great big black snake or something to just cross my path. What I got was a tiny harmless snake, partially hidden by leaves, and if I wasn't aware and watching for it, I would have just passed right by... How many things in my life has God tried to show me and I've just passed right by?
