(Just kidding. Friends?)

My first full-time position in ministry was as a youth pastor in Indiana. It was a great church and a great bunch of people. Even though I didn't know what I was doing, God came through and accomplished a lot of good stuff. One regret I have, however, is my handling of a ministry culture issue. What the heck is that, you say? A ministry culture is like the spiritual and emotional atmosphere of a group. After being there for four years we had developed a pretty tight and focused core of students and leaders. The ministry itself had a good and healthy Jesus-centered focus and some good ministry was happening. But something was wrong. I could feel it. Even though things looked OK, the truth was that from the top down something was broken and was poisoning what Jesus wanted to accomplish there. Worse yet? It was my fault.

What was it? Hidden sexual sin? Nope. (though I'm sure there was some of that... #TEENS) Unethical handling of finances? Nope. Then what? Ready?

SARCASM

Ya, that's right. Sarcasm. "What the what?!" you might say. "How could sarcasm prevent God from moving as He would wish?" At the core, any group is a community of individuals relating one to another. For a variety of reasons I used, allowed and encouraged sarcasm in our communication with each other and it came to the point where it actually became cutting and venomous. We could all say the meanest of things to each other and then afterward add two small words as if it negated the damage we had just caused. "Just Kidding" was the magic words that allowed us to say whatever we wanted. There was no speaking of life and encouraging one another as a norm. I opened the door and the kids ran with it. Even though we genuinely loved each other, we had become fools. Proverbs 26:18-19 says

and says, “I was only joking!”

Why am I writing this? I am concerned about what I see in the church culture today. The current focus of my concern is the site Babylonbee. If you are a Facebooker, you have probably seen some of the stories. Listen, most of the articles are funny and I think it is totally appropriate for us to laugh at ourselves from time to time. Sarcasm in general is also fine and can be a useful tool in communication, but what I see a lot of these days is the mocking sarcasm that is then labeled as "Satire." In other words, mocking and then the proverbial "Just Kidding" tagged on the end. This whole satire thing is out of control. People use it to malign and mock whoever they disagree with, but it's ok...because it's funny. I see it from Christians who disagree with other Christians over things like doctrinal points, ministry style, size of a person's church, etc. It's ugly and it needs to stop. It's a terrible witness and is the antithesis of John 13:35. James 3:6 warns:

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

I know. I'm a giant killjoy. But please run your speech through the filter of Scripture; especially the call to maturity in James 3:1-12. Helpful questions:

"Am I building up or tearing down?"
"Is this harmless sarcasm or am I mocking?"
"Am I echoing Jesus or demonic scoffing?"

Scripture (2 Peter 3:3) warns that in the last days there will be mockers and scoffers. Walk with wisdom in these times. Be different.

Is Pastor Talking About ME?!?!

So maybe you've been in church at various points and as the pastor is preaching all of a sudden they are using an illustration that feels like they are reading your mail to the rest of the church. "Is he talking about me?!?...Did someone tell him??" Or maybe even worse, it sounds like he is saying something that you confided in him about previously. Through the years I have had people come up to me after services with a variety of emotional responses because of this. To be honest some have been quite angry at me! But what is the truth? *IS* the pastor talking about YOU??

Before I answer, let me say this: I always go to church with an open heart and with "ears to hear" as Jesus says in the Gospels. I hunger to hear His voice and as such when I am listening to another pastor speak I am listening for the Spirit's voice to communicate to me. I would hope that all of you are placing yourselves in a similar posture to hear and obey.

The answer to the question in about 95% of cases (did you know that 87.56467% of statistics are made up???) is, "No. The pastor is not talking about you" nor is he referring to what you shared with him in private. Every man and woman of God that I know spends many hours in prayer and preparation before standing behind the pulpit to share what we all hope and pray is God's message to His people in that moment. That's not to say that different situations and conversations with people don't spark something that will be a driving force behind a Sunday morning message. Keep in mind that the majority of the New Testament, which is God's Word to us today, is actually letters written to specific people about specific situations in their lives or in the church. Those communications covered everything from disciplining people to commending them and through them God is still speaking to us today. I once had a lady get so offended because I wrote a blog about an issue that she had brought up to me in conversation. It sparked something in me that I felt needed to be addressed on a larger level to other people. Though I never mentioned that conversation or the person in the blog, she soon left the church. ( #BaitOfSatan )

The bottom line is that the vast majority of times, it is simply the Holy Spirit talking to you because you have rightly placed yourself in an environment where it is easier than normal for Him to to do so. And you should not only respond accordingly, but be grateful that He is speaking to you and leading you in your growth. If it happens that the pastor is using your conversation or situation within a sermon because the Lord sparked something within them that He wants spoken to the Whole, then be even more thankful.

Kim Davis and American History

I understand those that disagree with Kim Davis' actions and respect their right to do so. I can happily coexist with those that disagree with me (I am married afterall...) ;)

My only wish is that those that disagree would at least do so with a proper understanding of the main elements involved in this case that set the framework for her actions: the Bible, the Mayflower Compact and the U.S. Constitution.

I keep hearing things like:

"This country was founded on the principle of separation of church and state." No it wasn't, nor was our current interpretation of this principle the original intent.

“In our society, we obey civil laws, not religious ones. To suggest otherwise is, simply put, entirely un-American.” Actually the opposite is true. The very nature of law and our concepts of right and wrong are rooted in Ten Commandments as well as the concept of judgment.

"Christians are called to always submit to the governing authorities...Romans 13, man!!" As with all passages in the Bible you cannot isolate one from the other. I could easily point you to Acts 4-5 as well as Christian history in defying Rome, defying the Pope and the Catholic Church and even our own brief American History where men of God and heroes like MLK, Jr. defied laws for the sake of doing what was right. And don't forget that this nation was forged in the fires of Revolution to throw off an oppressive governing authority in order to form a "more perfect union."

Though Kim may or may not be able to articulate how the Compact and the Constitution influenced her actions, the source material for those documents, the Bible, were what guided her by faith. There is a colossal amount of resources and quotes from Founding Fathers showing how these worked in harmony and were intertwined to forge this nation and guide our path. The modern revisionist and liberal lens through which we look at current events as well as our history is one that is broken and distorted. Ever since The Bible was removed a growing snowball of implosion has been rolling.

Only two nations in all of history were founded in covenant with God: Israel and the United States. We have enjoyed the blessing and favor from that. As a result of those biblically based values we have also been the most generous nation in the world funding disaster relief, missions, food and medical aid, etc. The world has been a better place because the U.S. has been in it. However, we have lost our way and though God has shown incredible patience and grace with us, we must also be prepared to embrace the consequences from breaking that covenant. On the eve of the 14th anniversary of 9/11 and seeing all that has transpired in this nation, perhaps it is time we take a good hard look before it is too late.

(Why keep posting about this?on facebook.com/eric.schall and here? Glad you asked! Because I really believe this event as well as the catalyst of the SCOTUS decision is a pivotal moment in our country that will lead to our national demise via judgment if we (the Christian Americans) do not pray, speak up, unite, vote, etc.)

You know for years I have heard people asking "where is the Church," and "where are the Christians" as they looked at the snowballing effect of what was happening in our country. Well, here is one that did stand up and the frustrating thing is the response. Of course the God-haters are up in arms about her actions, but as I have engage this current event online most of the pushback I am getting is coming from the Jesus-followers and the religious crowd (not the same.) What does a hero look like? Looks a lot like Kim Davis if you ask me.

Like most heroes, even biblical ones, she is far from perfect and has made lots of mistakes, but in a moment that counted she made a decision to act and draw a line. Not only that, but she has held to it even though it meant going to jail. However, the comments that I am getting from those who should be supporting her are all about how she did it wrong. Much time and words has been spent telling how she should have done something different. "Keep your head down!" "Just blend in!" "Don't like it, just quit!" She has been called self-righteous, selfish, hypocrite, bigot, ignorant, etc. She has been accused of grandstanding, abusing her power, having a double-standard. I have seen colleagues that I love and respect trying to deflate her important act of civil disobedience by creating false parallels and splitting theological hairs.

I've seen well-meaning Christians dismiss Kim Davis' actions as unimportant because of the terrible persecution that is happening to other Christians around the world, particularly in the Middle East. To dismiss the lesser or "soft" persecution of what we are increasingly experiencing here in this country just because it is worse somewhere else, does nothing to address the problems here...which will only grow and get worse if not dealt with now.

I've heard many Christians talking about "Separation of Church and State" as if it were a biblical principle or part of the Apostle's Creed instead of what it actually is: a principle written in a letter by Thomas Jefferson meant to assure people of the Church that the state would not interfere or establish a national church. People keep trying to judge current events by each new normal that hits us...Problem is, everything is broken. It is wisdom to turn back to when things were working and make that the guiding principle. In the Bible that is known as repentance.

I've heard Christians talking about Romans 13 and the principle (and command) to submit to governing authorities, however you cannot isolate one part of Scripture from the rest. Acts 4 & 5 clearly present the principle of defying authority if it conflicts with God's. I see many other cases throughout Scripture such as Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego who defied a government placed over them by God and refused a command that would have caused them to deny their faith.

All the voices of those who should be supporting this dear lady are instead saying that she should just quit. That she is immature in her faith and has erred. But none of them...NONE, have made a stance for their faith that has cost them their freedom. Sitting there like the 11 still in the boat watching & criticizing Peter as he gets out and walks on the water.

So, where is the Church? Where are the Christians? Right here. And if we don't have more like her and soon, the rights and freedoms that we have enjoyed in this country are going to disappear.

(For those who would like to Send cards of encouragement to Kim you can do so by sending them to Kim B Davis c/o Carter County Detention Center 13 Crossbar Road Grayson Kentucky 41143)

(I speak as a Christian American. My primary citizenship is in Heaven and whatever happens to this country I am secure in my future with Christ. However, I am also a citizen of this country that I love and am engaged with my vote, with my biblical worldview and with my freedom of speech)

Culture Wars!
Revenge of the Sissies

Intro
Saw Star Wars recently. It was such a good movie. Got to see Anakin freak out, and go Sithy on everybody…I only wish that JarJar would have been one of the victims!

Your education by nature is a preparative thing. It is constantly focusing you on your future. This is right and it should be that way…but one of the drawbacks can be that you tend to view your life as something that “will be” instead of “is.”

Don’t settle into a wait and see.
Your life becomes a “wait and see” thing.

We cannot afford for you to wait and see. We need you now. We need you now young Davids and Deborahs. Just imagine if David had waited to see what his life was going to be. Imagine if he viewed life as a wait and see prospect. He wouldn’t have killed the lion. He wouldn’t have killed the bear…and as a result he wouldn’t have been ready to step up and kill the giant.

1 Samuel 17:34-37 (NKJV) "But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”"

Right now there are culture wars going on around you. You may not be too aware of them, but you will be as you live determined to honor Christ in this life. Your faith and values are assaulted everyday, every time you turn the tv on. Every time you listen to the radio, or download songs. Some things will be as intimidating as giants to you.

You will have people taking a stand against you, telling you that you are not to take a stand.

You will have people tell you that the only absolute truth is that there is no absolute truth.

You will have people assaulting you, telling you that you are cruel and intolerant because you live your life by standards.

It’s a mess! And it is easy to live intimidated by these giants and turn into one of the sissies that refuse to govern themselves with honor and live according to the standards and principles found in the Word of God. They will tempt you to live with your knees knocking in fear like everyone else, and start saying things like “well that’s just my truth…” “everything is relative”

What to do? Move to some remote mountaintop and eat bugs and mushrooms? Lock yourself in a church and plug your ears like much of the church today? I say the best defense is a good offense. Doesn’t mean try and be “offensive,” but it does mean live in the power and blessings that God provides us. Live with purpose. Live with peace. Live out loud and make a difference around you. God is recruiting champions, and he is looking squarely at you!

There will be rough times ahead. Not going to deceive you. Learn to cherish them…those times are the Forge of Champions.

Revenge of the Sith was kind of a dark movie. Saw people walk out all bummed and some even crying at points. Life will be like that. It will seem like the Hand of God has left you, hope will seem a distant memory. But do you know that just like with this last star wars movie…I know how it all ends. You see I saw the other movies…I know Anakin gets “saved” (if I can use that term), I know Luke and Laura go through some trials, but they emerge strong and victorious.

Do you know I’ve read the end of this book too! I know how thing turn out for those that hold on, and persevere. I know the King is coming back. I know that in this life God’s hand of favor rests on those He calls His own. I know that when they do go through tough times and trials that it isn’t meaningless, it isn’t empty, we’re not alone! I know that there is destiny on God’s kids, we can live like champions, and one day at the finish line…we get the Grand Prize!

All of us have a public face. It's our best face. It's the face that we want to be judged by since that is the one we use for good deeds, religious activity, facebook, etc. We even start to judge ourselves by that face compared to other people's. We think we are "pretty good." But there's a problem. That's not our true selves...our true face. Our true face is the one that keeps popping out at inopportune times. It's the one that needs healing and is often ignored in fantasy or medicated into silence. Our true face is the one that is a broken sinful mess and is longing for acceptance. Our true face also happens to be the only face that God will deal with. He doesn't engage our veneers. He doesn't engage who we wish we were, but rather who we really are. He says "there's the real you...the one that I love and want."
"But the cost...," we say as we think of our mess and cling to our security blankets (idols) of entertainment, unhealthy relationships and the rat race to get more stuff. He acknowledges our mess and points to the cross. And then it is decision time...again. Will we shrink back into the darkness or will we finally embrace His gift through faith and turn away from everything that has failed us so many times? For those who choose life and freedom, all of a sudden our true face becomes our best face because we are whole, loved and redeemed.

"Then Jesus spoke out again, 'I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"

President Obama in his comments about the SCOTUS decision today announced that "justice has arrived like a thunderbolt" It is significant that Baraq in Hebrew means "lightening". (Though I disagree with the video maker's initial conclusion click here to watch a video of the meaning of his name)

For close to a decade Christians and the majority of the people of this country have voiced their dissent of gay marriage with votes on the state level. Over the years the federal courts have slowly and steadily taken away the voice of the people by overturning rightly elected constitutional amendments and referendums. All the while as the decisions were made the new kept reporting how "gay marriage is now legal in ____" They would also report how opinion polls were shifting in support when I really think it was the people giving up the fight since they felt powerless because their voice had already been stripped away...opinions without the power of vote are powerless to affect change. Today POTUS succeeded in his agenda to legalize gay marriage in this country. You say SCOTUS is the one who handed down the decision, but with POTUS' obvious bias throughout the years and his nomination of two Justices to the court, do you really think that he didn't have that conversation with them before nominating.

So now gay marriage is the law of the land, what do we do with that as Bible-believing Christians?

A few thoughts in 2 different areas:

1. We continue to offer a reasoned respectful voice in the marketplace of ideas as to what the Gospel is and what God's Word says.

2. We continue to show (true) love and kindness to all people, including those who self-identify as homosexuals or any one of a number of different possibilities currently.

3. We continue to pray and vote according to a biblical worldview

4. Continue to teach and show your children what God's plan is for a family and how He reveals His nature through His design (as well as grace and forgiveness when we come to Him when we blow it)

5. Study God's Word so that we can not only know and love God more, but also be able to give a reasoned defense of the faith which will likely come under greater attack

We must prepare for what is likely coming. This decision is unlike others in the past. Another horrible reality that is the law of the land is the right to kill unborn babies. However, doctors have the right to not perform abortions due to conscientious objections. As we have seen in the past several years the gay agenda isn't just about the "right to marry," rather it is a well-funded, well-documented agenda to force acceptance and approval of gay (in all its forms) practices as normal, healthy and right. Right now in CA and soon in VA children are being taught in preschools and elementaries about "gender fluidity" and "gender spectrum" with the inability of parents being able to opt out their children. What this continued agenda likely means for the church is that you will have gay couples setting pastors up for lawsuits upon being told by the pastor that they will not perform a wedding for two homosexuals. It is very likely that it will mean the end of tax exempt status for churches which result in many churches closing. It is also very possible to see pastors fined and even jailed for their refusal according to broadening definitions of "hate" crimes.

It's only logical that we get offended on behalf of others who may or may not actually be offended. And if you disagree with that, I am offended and I have no problem offending you because you disagree with me. You are just not enlightened enough. Your lack of enlightenment is offensive.

Sound about right? #TheNewAmerica #LandOfTheFragile #HomeOfTheWeak #TwistedEmpathy

May God have mercy on us and restore us. May we remember our covenant with Him and repent of trying to make a nation in our own image and strength. Blessed is the nation who's God is the Lord.

Sort of...

Does relationship determine truth? Sort of. Granted truth is truth (no matter what culture says), however relationship lends weight and trustworthiness to truth. Think about it...most people are for gay marriage or applauding gay lifestyle because someone they know is gay (or someone they know knows someone, etc. you get the point) Even teens growing up in church are deeply affected by this type of relational context of truth. So here's my point then: relational context of truth is true even with God's Word. Here's what I mean, unlike the shifting sand of what a sinful broken culture says is true or not, God's Word is absolute and eternal. It is true whether you agree or not, believe or not or are aware of it or not. BUT, there are plenty of people (including Satan) who know and misapply Scripture. (John 14:17, Matthew 4:1-11) There are plenty who read it and say "fiction!," "fable!," "just a historical text," "religious instruction," etc. What's the difference? It is our relationship with Christ that makes this truth come alive...it makes it true not just in an abstract sense, but in a personal sense. Having the Spirit of Truth residing in our hearts makes THE truth, our Truth because it is all about Him.(John 16:13-14) It is our love for Jesus that causes us to not only believe, but to obey at the cost of everything else...because we KNOW. To give this some context I'll use the example above, there are several people that I know and love deeply who are living a gay lifestyle, but loving them does not mean that I embrace or celebrate their choices. Why? Because my heart breaks for them. Their choices will only lead to brokenness and destruction. Maybe that doesn't answer the question of why I can't affirm their choices. Bottom line is because I have a relationship that supersedes these others and that relationship defines not only truth but all other relationships. My prayer is that our younger generation will have such encounters with the Spirit of God that Truth will be made personal and that all other relationships secondary. (Matthew 10:34-37)

“Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. " (Psalm 86:11, NIV)

At the heart of today's messed up thinking regarding what's true or not is, believe it or not, a sense of compassion. It's a compassion that has been twisted and perverted by the Enemy so that the individual is exalted above God and becomes the supreme authority. What's at the root of all this? Pride. Inside their hearts people say, "'Well how would I feel if I were in their shoes?' I don't want to be told what I'm feeling is wrong,' etc. Which, guess what, is another perversion of something holy; the verse referred to as "The Golden Rule" in Luke 6:31. The enemy has been twisting God's Word since the beginning by asking Adam and Eve, "Did God really say...?"
The result?
"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

Broken

Three and a half years ago I resigned as Lead Pastor of a church that I loved and gave my blood, sweat and tears to revitalize. My family and I came to that decision only after months of prayer and repeated confirmations from the Lord. (you can read about it all here) We left with a sense of excitement and purpose because God had moved so quickly and purposefully.

My wife and I have determined in our hearts to truly hear with the same amount of clarity from the Lord that we had about leaving our church as to where He is leading us next. Ministry, particularly the Lead Pastor position, is much more than a job; it is a relationship with many parallels to marriage. With that in mind we have had to say no to many churches because we just didn't have His peace about saying yes. It made me feel foolish many times. Even though the Lord has provided for us in many ways, finances have been really tight for us and scary with some big expenses coming down the road. I have felt this burden more than anyone. It is hard-wired in a man's heart to provide for his family. Though I am working some side-jobs as well as guest-speaking and doing consulting with churches on church health issues, the income is only enough to pay the immediate bills and support a not-so-secret Chipotle addiction. :) I have grappled with wondering, 'where is God?' and 'why is it taking so long?' and 'Is He done with me?' and 'At what point do I become a "former pastor"?' I have had to endure people's speculations about if there is hidden sin in my life, if I am truly called or I have pride issues and whether or not I am truly listening to God's voice. (friends of Job) There have been some truly dark times that I have walked though. But God's grace has been there.

Months ago an opportunity opened up that, if it worked out, would make all the dashed hopes and frustrations make sense. It was the kind of thing that brought past, present and future into focus. Surely, this was the moment and the setting where all the prophetic words that God had spoken to us would come to pass. We stood on His promises. We were confident that even though I am the underdog (as always) God would open the door that no man could shut. Recently, we found out that the door was shut with no opportunity to even have a conversation. It's ok, I wasn't owed anything, but to be sure I was gutted over it.

Not even sure why I am writing this (or if anyone ever reads these things!) apart from some cathartic need to get it out. Perhaps it's just a way to tell myself that I choose to continue to trust in the Lord. Even though He has not done what I thought He would and what I wanted Him to, He has saved me and is with me and there is no better thing. If my time of serving Him in ministry is done, He is still good. Though my dreams are lying broken at my feet, I will still praise Him. I'm a blessed man with a wife I don't deserve and great kids that love and serve the Lord. At times I feel guilty for not being more appreciative of that. My heart just yearns to be productive for the One who gave it all for me and I feel impotent to do anything. I don't have the faith to talk about the future right now, so I'll just concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other and trust Him with the rest.

This song hits the mark:

The pastor's relationship to the church is more than a job; it's more like the covenant relationship of marriage and should be respected

The measure of a man is not his successes, but rather his struggles and the fruit that they bear

If the focus is always on the positive, people forget the big negatives of why Jesus had to die a gruesome death in our place #Ransom

The epitome of God's mercy is the cross. The epitome of God's grace is His Spirit within us

It's bad when churches are nothing but a sea of gray hair. It is equally bad if it is nothing but styled hair and skinny jeans.

Effective leaders know how to celebrate victories as well as defeats.

If you don't fear God, you've made Him much smaller than He really is

Worship leaders: don't let passion breed arrogance in your heart.

For the most part, I like the fact that there are movies attempting to bring forward biblical stories and themes the last few years. With the success of movies like the Passion and the History Channel's tv mini-series "The Bible," Hollywood is waking up. However, there are some challenges to this new direction....

So there's a new "Exodus" movie coming out next month starring Christian Bale. The title is "Exodus: gods and kings" the description is "One man against an empire." In other words, "Batman saves the Jewish people."

However, the only hero in the biblical story of the Exodus is God. Moses was a broken old man who was a "has been." He was someone who grew up with privilege and even though he had empathy for his people, he still lived in the palace. He was 40 when he killed a man mistreating the Jews and then he ran. He lived in the wilderness as a shepherd for another 40 yrs as God stripped away all vestiges of his former life. He was humbled and undone. At the age of 80, a new beginning at a burning bush that he was reluctant to embrace. He was too old and too broken to rely on his own plans and his own strength anymore; perfectly positioned to be used by God. The next and final 40 yrs of his life were spent putting to use his training as a shepherd (though I'm sure he didn't perceive it as training at the time). He dealt with a bunch of whiny temperamental sheep...I mean people, leading them through the same wilderness.

All this is not to say that Moses wasn't a great man, but I'm just betting the emphasis in the movie is upon the man rather than the God who made, called and empowered the man.

Looks like it will be an entertaining flick though and I'll probably go see it. The only danger is that with this movie and movies like Noah with Russell Crowe is that the stories are becoming so twisted around so that they are completely missing the point. I think we all expect a certain amount of creative license when movie scripts are made, but we live in a biblically illiterate culture and therefore truth is lost in the adaptation. Those that watched the movie Noah are likely to walk away with the message that God destroyed humanity because we were bad caretakers of nature. What it does is undermine the credibility of these events recorded in the Bible and turns them into myths and fairytales. I wonder what message will be delivered with this latest movie.

Maybeeee this one?

KAPOW! BLAMM-O!

**WARNING!!** This posting is not Politically Correct. Not even close. :)

Did you know that it is not only ok, but biblical to judge? (see Mt. 7:15-20; John 7:24; 1 Cor 5:11-13...just to name a few) ) Today you are absolutely condemned if you stand up and say that something is "Wrong." Groupthink says that things are never wrong, just different. (unless of course you disagree with this post-modern philosophy; then you are...wrong)

But Christians DO have the biblical mandate (that is so often misapplied and thrown in our faces) to "Judge not, lest ye be judged." (Matthew 7:1). So are we to never stand up and say what's going on around us is wrong? Let's bring this home by looking at the two most prevalent examples in our world right now:

Are we unloving to say that homosexuality is sin? Are we wrong to declare that homosexual "marriage" is destructive not only to the immediate people involved, but also our country?

What about Islam? Are we being prideful, ignorant and narrow minded in saying that it is a false religion that is deceiving millions of people around the world? That it is the most common factor behind the horrible acts of terrorism happening around the globe today? Are we wrong to take a stand against Sharia Law both here and abroad? Isn't that culturally insensitive? Intolerant? Bigoted?

Well, we have been told so. And many Christians I know are confused and stay silent because have adopted the "live and let live" philosophy of this world. But a Christian who understands a biblical worldview knows that adopting this philosophy is more like "we'll live, but we'll let you die."

So how do we walk this biblical line? Is it possible to love, serve and respect someone who you totally disagree with? Is it possible to stand against an agenda that someone you know and love wholeheartedly supports without shattering the relationship or at the very least continue loving them? Does love mean (as we are being told today) that we never rebuke? Does it mean that we have to approve and embrace everything someone does?

Paul gives us the key when he says in Ephesians 6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
How does this help? Because Paul shows us the distinction that the PERSON is different from the spirit/idea/philosophy/culture/etc. influencing them.

It is not only ok, but it is right to continue to preach God's Truth in a world that is rejecting it. There is still only ONE way, ONE truth and ONE life and that is through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Jn. 14:6) It is absolutely right to stand up and judge something wrong or evil if that is what God's Word says that it is, even if it offends or hurts someone's 'feelers.' The warning Jesus gave about "Don't judge or you too will be judged" was followed by the words "with the same measure you use, it will be measured back to you." I'm ok with this! I use God's Word, not with self-righteousness or a sense of superiority. In fact it is the "Measure" that every human in existence WILL be measured by. I'm a wreck in need of a Savior! I fall upon His grace all the time! And by that grace I am slowly becoming more free and more like Him.

We have permission to judge according to God's Word, because it is not the standard of our own selves or our own performance that we are using. There is certainly the accompanying mandate to "Speak the truth in love..." (Eph. 4:15) We don't have to be insensitive jerks when taking a stand or disagreeing, but my whole point in this post is that it is not unloving to judge evil as evil. We are saying "This is what God says..." and then we love as we have been loved.
What it is, what it isn't and who has the rights to define such things. So these are some of the random thoughts I have had lately on marriage from a biblical perspective (a little deeper than normal):

From God came man. From man came a woman by God's hand, and out of woman comes all men and women by the creative breath of God upon the union of seed from man and egg from woman. God is the originator and creator. He is the one who continues to create and He is the One who holds it all together.

When man and woman come together in marriage they are uniting two parts of a whole and God is the Witness and the bond that brings those things together and in Him they are made complete. Man and woman in themselves are not whole for they did not have their beginning in themselves, but God. Two people coming together in their own power, design and bond are but shadows of what God has intended and walk in disobedience. God cannot bless disobedience

The marriage ceremony in church honors what God has created. It recognizes the sacredness of the creation of this institution and both submits to His authority as well as invites His blessing upon the union. It invites witnesses who also honor God to share in the joy, to bless the new union and to hold this new couple accountable to their vows to one another and to God. For their union is not about themselves only.

Marriage reveals God's Triune nature. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Three are One. Husband, Wife and God united make a whole. From this unity comes creation and new life. From this new life God's plan is revealed, fulfilled and carried on to future generations.

This is God's plan. We also live in a broken world of our own design and have made a mess of His creation. Certainly there is grace to cover and re-cover because of the cross of Christ. However, grace is not license to redesign. Grace does not put us on the throne. Marriage is not ours to do with as we please. We are to orbit around God's designs for He is the center of all things, not demand that He orbit around our designs as if we were. The blood of Christ and the accompanying grace allow us to break free from the destruction of serving self and instead start building our lives upon God's plan that brings new life and blessing.

So the problem we face as a society is who gets to define what marriage is? Is it about us? Our feelings? Our attractions? Our design? Or is it about the One who made us and the design of man and woman coming together in empowered unity with God Himself.

Marriage is the fundamental building blocks of a society...the family unit. It is the main intersection of the sacred and the secular within a society. It is the wellspring from which all things will be determined. Sacred? Yes. Important? Absolutely.

Sadly most churches think that the above image is the answer to the question of how to attract young people. Not literally of course, but when they try to modernize a bit or go "contemporary" by putting out some muffins and coffee and maybe sing some newer songs, it is essentially the same thing as trying to put some hip clothes on grandpa and calling it change. The answer is much more involved and harder. Yes, many churches would benefit from some updated methodology, but before that happens you need to consider some things and ask some questions. Read this article to gain some initial insight into what is needed. (HINT: not just method change, but a whole new DNA of church culture)

Every time I have sought the Lord over the last several years concerning some difficult circumstances or needed direction I have heard Him say clearly only one thing. I confess that every time He says it to me it frustrates me! He doesn't tell me what I want to hear!!! I am at times utterly perplexed and despairing (see 2 Cor 1:8). I rant at Him "Just tell me what to do and I will do it!" Ever been there?

So what is it He keeps telling me? "I am with you." That's it! I know, right?!?! But maybe in my rantings and frustrations I am missing something. Maybe...just maybe, He is whispering to me the greatest thing that He could possibly say. To know that I am not alone. To know that I have not taken some wrong turn at some point. To know that my Jesus Whom I love more than anything or anyone is with me...and He keeps having grace upon me to remind me of that. After all the ways I have blown it. All the times I have betrayed Him, disappointed Him...He is with me. And if He is with me, then He loves me and is leading me whether I feel it or not. He is holding me in His nail-scarred hands. Shouldn't that be enough? After all, when I answered His call to "Preach the Gospel" my answer to Him was "Yes, as long as you're with me" (Actually it was "HAHAHAHA, You're crazy or I am! But if this is really You, then yes as long as you're with me") Maybe He is simply reminding me of that moment of beginning over and over again. How about that...while writing this I just thought of that. Heh. Cool. He is with me. It is enough.

I didn't know it would be my last conversation with her)

So I just spent some time talking to my Grandma, Lois Wilson or as we call her, Mimi (Great-Mimi for my kids). She is 89 yrs old. She has always been a strong independent woman and follower of Jesus. About 9 months ago she got sick and almost died. It led to a chain of events where she now has to live in an assisted care facility after almost 30 years of living on her own. (My Grandpa died back in the 80's) Anyway, she is thanking God for her new circumstances. Why? Because she has clear eyes and a full heart. Instead of complaining about her loss of independence and all that is associated with that, she is filled with joy over this new leg of her "journey with the Lord," her new missions field. Through loving relational evangelism she is sharing Jesus with everyone around her. From those that work at the facility to those that are also living there. She is also celebrating her increase of personal intimate times with the Lord through meditation, prayer and worship.

And so it makes me wonder if in the sunset of my days I will still be excited about my journey...If I will still have clear eyes to see the opportunities that the Lord puts in front of me to tell others of Him. I've had to do some repenting lately. My eyes weren't so clear. My heart not so full. I lost sight of things in this current chapter of my journey. Thank God for His grace and that my life can be lived "to the praise of His glorious grace."

Clear eyes, Full heart, Can't lose.

Making an Impact One Life at a Time

Today I went and visited a beautiful baby boy named Noe and his very tired momma, Gladia. Noe was born around 2 am this morning and is an 8 lb. boy with a full head of hair and 2 teeth already! Gladia called me around 11:30 a.m. to share the happy news with me.

So why am I blogging about this? Well, I barely know this family. You see I am kind of a Chipotle addict. I am even a member of the invitation-only Farm Team (google it!) Anyway, wherever I go I talk to people. If I am a regular somewhere I remember people's stories and ask them about events from their lives. As a result people can sense that I see them as more than an employee in a service industry. They can sense when value is being added to them in a genuine way. So at Chipotle I have gotten to know a few of the employees as well as the General Manager. There are two sweet ladies there that always shout out an "hola!" to me. Now my Spanish is pretty much limited to ordering my favorite foods and what not to put on it (lettuce, tomato, sour cream...yuk!) But I try to use this limited Spanish when they are there knowing they appreciate hearing their own language. (Always thought they were Mexicans, but just learn one is from Honduras and the other from El Salvador)

A few months ago when Gladia told me she was pregnant I asked in the process of a conversation if she knew the sex and name of the baby yet. She told me about her boy named Noe (No-ee), and I told her I was going to start praying for her and for Noe. She gave me a hug and told me she loved me. ...I was caught totally off guard and uttered an awkward, "love you too" while wondering what my wife would think of this story. A few weeks later while strapping on the Chipotle feed bag and reading my book, Gladia walked up and handing an invitation to her upcoming baby shower. Now, I hate those things. They are usually way girly and I the very few that I have been to, I have wanted to be anywhere but there. But I knew I would be going. I got to meet her husband and family as well as a lot of friends and family as well as other Chipotle employees outside of the restaurant setting.

So what is the "why" behind all this? Very simple. As a Christian we are called to be salt and light...everywhere. In the workplace, in the marketplace and even in Chipotle. We are to be not only pointing people to Jesus, but also bringing the Kingdom of God with us and establishing it wherever we are. We are to be agents of the Kingdom of God. It is the way that the Church has spread across the globe for 2000 years.

So today I got to pray with Claudia and pray the Lord's blessing on Noe's young life. How did this opportunity come about? By loving people, by being available. It's not as hard as people make it out to be and you just might get to eat some yummy food along the way.

Guest Blogger: Josiah Schall (my 10 yr old son)

I found this written on my son's iPod Touch in the 'Notes' app. He is 10 years old and says he wants to be a pastor when he grows up. Though that is entirely up to the Lord as to whether or not He will 'call' my son into vocational ministry, he certainly has a great heart and desire! He says he reads this when he is going through "hard times."

Perhaps it would be a blessing to you too:

"Jesus. He rules the earth. No matter what you do he still loves you. He is the one and only savior and one and only God. Because he rules the earth. He rules the earth. Jesus saves us and cares for us. Jesus rules everyone and everything and loves everyone and everything. Jesus is the master of everything.
Jesus is our savior and power he gives us strength through hard times and heals us when we are ill. Jesus is real and Jesus watches over us. Jesus is just truly amazing and powerful. If you make a mistake ask for forgiveness and Jesus forgives. Jesus created us like a potter makes pots Jesus is the potter we are the clay. Jesus protects us. Since we are Jesus' creations he loves us no matter what."

Hopefully all of you have wonderful childhood memories to hang onto. Hopefully these formative years were ones in which you experienced love, affirmation, discipline and all the things necessary to growing into a healthy well-adjusted individual.

Childhood is wonderful, but it's straight up weird if a teenager still acts like a baby. Let's take the image to the extreme...

"What is wrong with this guy's parents?!?!" we would all shout.

In spiritual growth the childhood years are wonderful, but if we read our Bibles (I know...crazy, right!?!) we see that it is the Lord's expectation for us to grow, to mature, to become more and more like Him.

Teens often think their parents are mean because they make them do things they don't want to do. Make them engage in situations that make them uncomfortable. Why do parents do this? Why does the Lord do this to us?

Because we are meant for more than we are. We are meant to be overcomers. (See 1 John 5:4; Romans 8:37) And the only way we learn to be overcomers is to...wait for it...overcome difficult (and even seemingly impossible) situations. If we do not learn to live as overcomers in our adolescence, it is much more difficult (but not impossible) to learn this character trait later on.

There are two ways areas in which we must learn to overcome. Ask the Lord to help you in these two areas. To live as an overcomer of self (sinful desires) (see 1 Corinthians 9:27), and to live as an overcomer of the World (this present evil age, world system, principalities and powers) (See 1 John 5:4; Ephesians 6:10-19)

To Be Continued...

Chicken Bones, Tea Leaves and the Spirit of God

Ever been in a situation where you are looking for direction from God? Perhaps it is a pressing situation where the clock is ticking and decisions must be made...now! As a Spirit-filled Christian I am continually looking for not only God's direction, but also for Him to break though into my life in very real and tangible ways. It is a great joy of mine to look back and see how the Lord has led me, provided for me and used me. However, if I am honest in my looking back, those times were filled with doubt, uncertainty and fear. You see God never showed up exactly how or when I wanted Him to. And in those times I was constantly searching for His will so that I might live accordingly.

So here's the thing. It is so tempting during these times (I am in one of those times again) to get caught up in looking for "signs." Because of fear, timeline pressures, expectations of others, etc. Christians can drift toward superstition. Certainly God uses signs to communicate to us, but that is not His main voice. Signs usually only serve as a CONFIRMATION of what He has already spoken. BUT, it is difficult during transitions times.

As my wife and I have been praying about different churches that we have had conversations about regarding me coming to pastor, in each case we saw different "signs." Although we were never sure what they meant exactly. As I was talking to one church in Ogden, UT and I saw a man jogging and on the back of his shirt in big orange letters was the word "OGDEN." I thought...well this must be it! It wasn't. If I had been paying attention in my heart I would have known. Other times there have been similar "signs," but something was always absent internally. It can be a confusing and frustrating time.

So where do we learn how to discern God's will? The same way we learn anything about God; we turn to His Word. In His Word, we see the Holy Spirit taking the lead.

Example:
Ever notice that Judas' replacement was chosen kind of OT style in Acts 1, but after Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit to dwell in believers there is never again any mention of "casting of lots?"

Some people look at times of delay or things not working out smoothly as having missed God. How ridiculous! Again we look at God's Word. Did things always work out "smoothly" in the life and ministry of Jesus? How about the Disciples and the early church? Weren't most of them killed in a gruesome way according to Church history? What about the expansion of the Kingdom of God through the centuries? Smooth sailing? Hardly. Fact is that there will be gaps, struggles, flesh issues that are part of the mix in following Jesus where He leads.

So put the chicken bones, tea leaves, and fortune cookies away.
In all seriousness don't be an 'dumb donkey' and start opening up your spirit to the demonic by consulting horoscopes, tarot, or so-called psychics.

“I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one." 1 John 2:12-14

You see three different types of people that John is writing to. God has something to say to you at every stage of growth in your life. In other words you never outgrow your need for His voice.

Do you remember when you first experienced God? I'm not talking about religious education, but when you first felt the touch of Almighty God. That time when you KNEW that your sins were forgiven and that you were made brand new! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

I remember in college when I experienced God in a world-shaking way. When I finally surrendered all of myself to Him and stopped playing games. The joy was overwhelming! I would walk around giggling like a freak show. God's Word had come alive to me as I read it. What was so wonderful? As John says "because you know the Father." To feel Him so near, to experience His Spirit, to have my eyes opened as if for the very first time.

Perhaps the cares of this life have drowned out the voice of His Spirit. Perhaps the worries of this world have sucked out your joy. Spend some time today remembering what it is like to be a 'child' in His arms again. For as much spiritual growth as we may experience, we should never truly grow beyond being able to experience the joy of being a child of the Father.

To be continued...

I've been told it is a fair and thoughtful look at the subject. Perhaps you are confused or just don't know what to say about everything that is happening. When I reached in (after turning the breaker off!) and pulled it out I immediately recognized what it was and its value. Though the image that it bears is barely discernible, its value remains unchanged. It must have been in the disposal for years; it's all chewed up corroded and worn down. And yet...its value is the same. I could take it to the bank and deposit it as money.

The point? You may have been through some things. You may have been thrown away by others and forgotten. You may be all chewed up and worn down by choices you have made. BUT you're value remains UNCHANGED to God. In Romans it says that while we were still broken by our sin (worn down, thrown away, corrupted), Jesus died for us because our value to Him remained UNCHANGED. Though we surely look as bad or worse as this penny we still bear His image as worn and faded as that may be. Because of His love and value for us, He paid the ultimate price for us because we are the most precious thing in the Universe...much more than a penny. Because of this we don't have to stay as we are. When we bring our broken, chipped and worn down selves to Him we are transformed and made new. His image is freshly places in and on us. We are made whole and complete in Him...a new creation. But through it all, our value remains the same...worth the highest price<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
