About the Author

Catherine Lloyd grew up in London, England in the middle of a large family of girls. She quickly decided her imagination was a wonderful thing and was often in trouble for making stuff up. She finally worked out she could make a career out of this when she moved to the USA with her husband and four children and began writing fiction. With a background in historical research and a love of old-fashioned mysteries, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to wonder what a young Regency Miss Marple might be like, and how she would deal with a far from pleasant hero of the Napoleonic wars.

Holiday cheer has spun through the tiny Rocky Mountain town of Clear Creek, leaving everyone excited for the annual Christmas festival. But the real event of the season — Jemma and Brandon’s wedding — won’t happen until the tourists head home.

While Jemma is fulfilling her one festival assignment of helping vendors set up, she learns a man has swapped the ornaments he’d listed on his application for a book he’s written about the string of local murders. To avoid reigniting everyone’s emotional distress, the event organizer asks him to leave. When Jemma and Brandon check back, instead of finding an empty booth they find the man dead.

Before Jemma can reassure anyone that her focus is on the wedding, not the investigation, unsettling gifts that twist The Twelve Days of Christmas start appearing at her shop. The holiday tune has never been more threatening.

The killer’s grudge is personal, but Jemma has more to protect this Christmas than her life. She needs to wind up the investigation so she and Brandon can finally tie the knot!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Clear Creek just in time for the annual Christmas festival and, more importantly, Jemma and Brandon’s wedding. Before either one can happen, Jemma in helping vendors set up for the festival. She notices that one of the vendors is selling his book about several local murders instead of the local holiday items he listed on his application. Event organizer Emmilene tells him he’s violated his contract and needs to pack up and leave within the hour. But when Jemma and Brandon return, they find the books and a dead author.

Jemma has no desire to get involved in another murder investigation, especially with her wedding day quickly approaching. But someone doesn’t even give her a chance to say so. Instead, she starts to receive disturbing “gifts” based on The Twelve Days of Christmas. The killer is making the situation very personal. Each message definitely carries a layer of hatred.

Jemma and Brandon have no choice. If they want their wedding to be a celebration, they need to catch the murderer/gifter before they walk down that frosty aisle.

I was delighted to return to Clear Creek for the Christmas festival and Jemma and Brandon’s nuptials.

I love that it brought Brandon’s parents back to town. His mom, Tori, was happy to see them, but we see that it was something other than the weather that caused them to move away. Jemma has such a big heart, kind and caring. With everything on her plate, she carves out time to spend with Tori. Under the guise of helping her knit a hat, Jemma gets to know her future mother-in-law and forms a friendship. Brandon and his dad, Nathan, are surprised how quickly the two women connected in real ways.

Brandon and his dad spent some quality time too, when Brandon wasn’t helping Zak, the head of Clear Creek Security, and Sheriff Matthew Chase catch the killer and deal with all of Jemma’s gifts. Emmilene organized the festival while Kitty, Chloe, and some temporary helpers minded Black Sheep Yarns and Woolies. Granny was in charge of the Cozy Tree where hats are knitted for charity. Tori even stopped by to help. They all wanted to give Jemma plenty of time to complete all her tasks needed for the wedding.

Jemma really tried to leave the investigating to the investigators, but each “gift” received pulled her in. She was reviewing her life since she came back to Clear Creek. Who could be targeting her? The person was clearly watching her every move. Who could it be? The mystery has some dark notes, but the author tempers them well with the warmth of the holiday festivities and the wedding.

Christmastime is a wonderful time to visit Clear Creek. This little community goes all out. The Cozy Tree is a wonderful idea to do a little good over the holidays. While an outdoor winter wedding would never be for me, I loved it for Jemma and Brandon. With fresh snow, torch poles holding white candles, and everyone who welcomed Jemma back to Clear Creek- everyone from the Sheriff’s office, friends, and family- and Granny as the officiant, it was a perfect day and a wondrous way to end this series.

All’s Wool That Ends Wool brings to a close a series I have loved from the beginning. All the loose threads were knit together, and our favorite characters were left in a good place. That being said, it is not easy to say goodbye to these genuine, heartwarming fictional friends.

I highly recommend each book in the Clear Creek Mystery Series. They would make great Christmas gifts for yourself and all the lovers of crafty, cozy mysteries on your list.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this new series from Peggy Ehrhart, we meet Dr. Caroline Platte, Associate Director and Curator of Special Collections at the Yates Museum. She is working on the Banburyport at 400 exhibit. A prized antique quilt belonging to Nancy Critchley, one of the town’s wealthiest residents, is one of the exhibit’s primary pieces. Nancy had invited Caroline to brunch to talk about and pick up the quilt. When Caroline arrives,  a pale green-eyed gray tabby cat meets her at the door and leads her to a room all set for her visit. One place setting was undisturbed, and the other had a tipped crystal tumbler. Then she sees Nancy’s body on the floor with a stained, crumpled linen napkin nearby. It looks like Nancy tried to leave a message. She also finds an empty muslin quilt bag.

Soon, the town’s new detective and Caroline’s landlady and friend’s son, Gary Seldon, arrives on the scene. He quickly concentrates on Amber Foster, a museum intern, because she has a blog where she voices her displeasure regarding the Critchley family. Just because she exercises her right to free speech doesn’t mean she committed murder. Caroline and Libby head to the local coffee shop, a place where gossip flows unfettered, to hear what the good people of Banburyport have to say about the murder. Turns out there are several people who may have had motive to kill Nancy Critchley. Now they need to stitch together the clues and information to pin down the true killer and clear Amber’s name.

For the first book in a new series, Ms. Ehrhart did a great job of introducing the main characters. She has left plenty of room for them and the supporting cast to evolve as the series continues. I enjoyed meeting Caroline, Libby, and the long list of supporting characters. I love Libby; we’re close to the same age, and I feel like we have the same attitude. I think we would be great friends. I do enjoy Caroline’s hobby. She creates memory quilts with clothing and fabrics brought to her. I enjoyed the one she worked on throughout this story and the special results. As a former quilter, I will enjoy this theme very much.

I enjoyed the museum setting. It was only fitting that the murder mystery harkened to something in the past. New amateur sleuths Caroline and Libby picked up on one of the most important skills needed: eavesdropping. They also knew how to use their captive audience and not to give up if a plan doesn’t come together as hoped. I was a little disappointed in Detective Gary Seldon. He ignored proper police procedures and made a huge mistep regarding a key piece of evidence. He was darn lucky his mother and Caroline were investigating. I don’t think he would have come close to closing the case on his own. I enjoyed following along with Caroline and Libby, but I had the killer in my sights before all was revealed.

The Quilt Whisperer Investigates has given this series a splendid start with a fun theme, an interesting setting, an entertaining whodunit, and authentic characters I can’t wait to visit again. I hope we don’t have to wait too long.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Whitman’s Port Choral Society is preparing for their annual fall concert when one of the sopranos hits a high note and then hits the floor. Detective Jonathan Storm quickly arrives on the scene, notes that the victim is dead, and starts questioning everyone. The “Teachers Out On The Hunt” T.O.O.T.H were all in attendance. Then Stefan gets sick and deteriorates at a rapid pace, while another choir member goes missing and another one dies. The retired teachers are worried.  They start to investigate the murders and the disappearance, hoping to stop the killing.

In addition to the choir tragedies, Stefan’s cousin surprisingly arrives from Italy, Meg has a creepy stalker, and the winner of a locally purchased lottery ticket has yet to come forward.

This second Sweet TOOTH Murder Mystery brings back a group of retired teachers with a lot on their plates and pulled in different directions. Meg, the main character, is still adjusting to life after losing her husband and son. She is close to her daughter-in-law and 14-year-old grandson, even contemplating moving in with them. Meg is also surrounded by friends, Meagan, Barbara, Edna, Stefan, and Liz. Together, they are “Teachers Out On The Hunt” T.O.O.T.H. After dealing with students for many years, they have many skills required to be an amateur sleuth. They all continue to develop in realistic ways. Having lost an adult son myself, I can identify many of Meg’s emotions.

Ms.Calpo has written a story with multiple plotlines that blends family secrets and complicated relationships with questions about an inheritance and several murders. She twists them together with such ease, giving the story a pace that ebbs and flows. The teachers had some interesting theories with more suspects than I first imagined. It sure kept me guessing with all the twists and turns. I was very attentive to each clue and pleased when all came together for the reveal. I was only partially right about whodunit. While the main mysteries are solved, an arc from book one will continue into book three.

I am happy to sing Death Hits the High Notes praises. It is an excellent addition to the series. Another entertaining, layered story from Ms. Calpo complete with a smart mystery, genuine characters, and fun dialogue. That Edna- she cracked me up several times.  I am fully invested in these senior sleuths and am looking forward to tagging along with them wherever the author takes them in book three.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Last Sunday, many of us took a trip to the nearby pumpkin patch. We have taken the kids there almost yearly since they were little and now continue with the grandkids. It has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, and according to their signage, they are the largest pumpkin patch in Wisconsin. I was amazed at how many food trucks were set up throughout the park. There was something for everyone. The only downside was that my scooter malfunctioned, and I had to switch to my wheelchair. I was having so much fun cruisin’ around wherever I wanted. Mr. Dollycas hasn’t checked it out yet. I hope it’s nothing serious.

Athena picked a small green pumpkin. She was determined and broke it off the stem herself. Charlotte chose a white pumpkin. Mr. Korbyn chose a traditional orange pumpkin. The big kids carried quite a few out of the patch too.

Remi was such a good sport. He entertained the littles all day. He would have rather have been hunting. But he did have fun and went home with at least two white pumpkins. Next year there will be two more littles for him to show around the pumpkin patch.

As more bodies begin to drop, Mal befriends several misfits who help him unearth the culprit. Among them, Des, a fledgling vampire; Hala, a magical empath; and Yu, a shapeshifting genius.

The team put their unique set of skills to the task, but as they get closer to digging up the truth, the group’s ghosts come back to haunt them, and the killer won’t rest until they’re all dead and buried.

About the Author

Jack Unthank was born in Andover, Hampshire, in 1994. He regrets this but had very little say in the matter. To avoid his hometown, he stuck his head in fantasy books and video games and had a habit of writing stories of his own. He studied computer science at the University of Bath, a degree he would use for seven or so years working in the video game industry as a programmer. This career came to a close when a chronic illness crept up behind him and unceremoniously bonked him on the head, taking him out of action. With a lot of time on his hands and never getting out of the habit of writing stories, he tried turning one into a book. He currently lives in Cardiff with his wife and two cats. Website
