Apply Now for 2010 Summer Programs

After reading that headline, you're probably thinking, "Summer? Didn't fall just start a few weeks ago?" True, but it's not too early for students to start thinking about how they'll spend their summer. ESRI offers two programs that give students and new grads the opportunity to gain personal and professional skills.

Participants in the Summer Internship Program work in a wide variety of departments throughout the company and in our regional offices. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students and provides an opportunity to work alongside ESRI staff on challenging projects. Internships are paid positions and last up to 12 weeks. "We had a great pool of applicants to the 2009 program and expect the same for next year," said Michael Johnson, who oversees our university relations program. "My best advice is for students to make sure their application is complete before submitting it and to be sure to include a cover letter. We understand students range in their levels of experience, and that's why it is so important for them to illustrate what differentiates them from other applicants. They should tell us exactly why they're applying to ESRI."

The Student Assistantship Program is primarily for graduate students or fourth-year undergraduate students interested in learning more about GIS technology. Up to 60 students are selected, giving them an opportunity to attend the largest GIS conference in the world ... the ESRI International User Conference, which next year will be July 12-16 in beautiful San Diego, California. Students help ESRI staff with conference logistics such as registration, monitoring sessions, and setup/teardown. In exchange, they are able to attend sessions and other conference activities.

The past few weeks have been busy for ESRI staff who have been attending career fairs, hosting information sessions, and conducting interviews on campuses across the U.S. We really enjoy meeting students face-to-face and learning about their plans for the future.

There are still a few opportunities for students to meet us this fall. In addition to learning about positions for new grads, you'll also find information on our Summer Internship Program and Student Assistantship Program. Here is the schedule:

Even though a new academic year has just begun, it’s never too early for students to start thinking about where they’ll begin their career upon graduation. ESRI staff will be on the road again this fall, visiting a number of campuses across the U.S. Attending an information session or career fair is a great way to meet ESRI staff and make that all-important first impression. If you're like most college students, you undoubtedly have a lot going on in your life these days. But if you're interested in applying for the ESRI International User Conference Student Assistantship Program, you'll want to do it soon! The application deadline is in two weeks--April 3.

The Student Assistantship Program is a great opportunity to attend the largest GIS conference in the world. Up to 60 students from universities across the U.S. will be selected to help at the conference with monitoring sessions, registration, staffing, and logistics. In return, participants receive a full registration package for the conference, hotel accommodations, and a small stipend for meals.

Says Elisha, a student at Stephen F. Austin State University, "If you’re really interested in GIS, this is the perfect place to be." Dan earned a B.S. in computer science from the university in 1994, taught classes during the fall 1996 and winter 1997 semesters, and credits the structure of UPJ's computer science program with preparing him for a career.

The 10^th annual GIS Day celebration was observed Wednesday, November 19. This grassroots event recognizes the importance of GIS and geography in our everyday lives. Employees at the Redlands campus enjoyed a special GIS Day anniversary display and delicious cake; there was also an employee raffle for GIS Day prizes.
