Earlier this week Ken and I traveled to Port Angeles to attend a workshop on identifying Japanese tsunami debris by Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer, leading oceanographer and author of Flotsametrics and the Floating World. Ken’s a much better wordsmith then I am and he’ll be posting a more detailed report on all the information we gleaned during the presentations over on the Ikkatsu Project website.

When I was designing the layout of my book, The Forgotten Shore, I struggled with half a dozen shots for the cover. In the end I selected this photo of the bear in the mist at the mouth of the Crescent River mainly because I felt it capture the mystic and, for lack of a better word, rawness of my Alaskan experience.

In addition to the vibrant colors in this sunset it was also memorable as this was the only time I can remember where clients actually cooked for me! Treat piled on top of treat.

I had a group of college kids I was leading around the San Juan Islands from Redding California. As Outdoor Recreation majors they had all the wilderness skills they needed I was there just to provide some local knowledge of the islands. One of the most enjoyable trips I’ve led.

The mouth of the Columbia River and it’s sandbar is know as one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world earning the title, ‘Graveyard of the Pacific’. With such an ominous title it’s easy to think it deserves two lighthouses to warn mariners away (the other is the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse), but the truth the North Head Lighthouse was built due to the fact that mariners coming down the coast from the north couldn’t see the Cape D. light as it was hidden behind the point.

Haystack Rock located just offshore from Cannon Beach is probably one of the most photographic landscapes on the west coast but when I saw it in this light how could I resist taking a shot?
