The class was slightly smaller than in previous weeks due to a couple of absentees. In the hope that those unable to make this week are checking out the course notes, here’s a summary of what was covered in Week 3.

Hopefully, you’ve all read my Week One Summary and my Week Two summary, and are following along nicely. Here’s what was covered in Week 3:

Google Webmaster Tools

This was the main discussion point for the week. From Google Webmaster Tools, you can get a view on what the mighty Google thinks of your site, and what you need to concentrate on fixing to give your site the best chance.

You can access Google Webmaster tools at www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and if you’re having trouble signing up, see our Validating Your Site with GWT notes.

Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard

The tools give you some useful information on what pages and search phrases are ranking well, plus let you see what pages and keywords are rising or falling in the rankings

Search Query Stats in Google Webmaster Tools

One of the most important sections is the Diagnostics section, which reports which pages have problems with META data such as Title or Description tags. Pay special attention to what’s reported in this section:

Google Webmaster Tools Diagnostics Meta Errors

Got any questions about Google Webmaster Tools? Please let me know!

Sitemaps

We covered the reasons why sitemaps, in particular, the XML sitemaps, are so important for optimising your site and making sure that Google can see all of your pages.

Extract of an XML Sitemap

Once you’ve created your XML sitemap, remember to add it to the Sitemaps section in Google Webmaster Tools, and check back to see if Google’s accepted the pages you’ve submitted.

Google Webmaster Tools Sitemaps

For more on this subject, see my How To Use Sitemaps On Your Website page

Housekeeping

As a reminder, week 4 of the course is on Monday the 14th of May, as Monday the 7th is a Bank Holiday. Also – there are still places on the Maximising Your Website course, which is planned for Saturday the 19th of May. Contact the college if you want to book a place, as this will only run if enough people are interested.

Thanks to course attendees Gill, Lee, Kevin, Paul, Luke, Brian, Michelle, Shirley, Mark and Natalie for coming along. M

If you’re on the course, please add a quick comment or question in the box below to let me know you’re reading. It’d also be great if you could ask a few questions, which will help our workshop session in our final week. If you want me to take a look at your site, or answer a specific question, please add a note in the comments section below.

This is a quick how-to guide, following reports that some of you have had problems confirming that you own a site as far as Google is concerned. Hopefully this will help.

Verify a site in Google Webmaster Tools

As Google Webmaster Tools contains information about your site that is deemed private, you need to confirm that you are the owner of a website. To do that, Google asks that you make a small change to your website, as only a site’s webmaster will have the ability to do this

Signing up for Google Webmaster Tools

First off, you need to create a free Google Webmaster Tools account. If you already have an account with Google (such as Google Analytics, or Gmail), then you’re halfway there. Go to www.google.com/webmasters and create an account.

Adding a site to Google Webmaster Tools

Now that you have an account, go to “Add Site”, and you will be prompted for the web address of the site. You will now need to make a small change to your site to verify that you are the owner. There are a few ways to do this:

Option 1 – Meta Data

If you select this option, you will need to add a small fragment of code to the META tags on your site’s homepage. Google Webmaster Tools will display a single line of code that you’ll need to paste on a new line in the <head> and </head> tags. The code looks like this

<meta name="google-site-verification" content="abcd_Defgh7kWW2xxxxQQa4IVt8aa" />

And the <head> </head> fragment looks something like this:

Example of data from a webpage HEAD section

It should be a case of editing the HEAD section of your site (either from the HTML code, or if you’re using an online web service, from “Appearance” or your site’s Template.

You can check that the code has gone in OK by going to your site’s homepage, right-clicking and selecting “View Source”. Look to see if the meta name=”google-site-verification” tag appears in the Head section.

Option 2 – Add a page to your website

For this, you will be required to upload an HTML file to your web server. Google will create a page with a long name, and you will be asked to save this page to your computer, then upload that page to your site.

Verify website ownership by uploading an HTML file to your site

Normally, it’s a case of uploading that page to your site using FTP, but some of you may not have that option, especially if you use a web-based site builder. If you can’t upload a webpage, then all is not lost, as you may be able to use your website builder to create a webpage that will satisfy Google. The page will need to have the same name as the one shown in Google Webmaster Tools, and contain the contents of the verification file. If you’re able to, create a webpage on your site with the same name, and on that page, paste in the contents of the Google verification file – it should be a single line of text.

Option 3 – Google Analytics

If you already have the Google Analytics code embedded on your site, and you use the same Google account for Analytics and Webmaster Tools, then you might not need to do any further verification – to be able to embed the Analytics tracking code on your site, you have to be able to make changes to your site, so Google know you’re the owner.

For this option, you need to be using up-to-date tracking code (Google Analytics tracking code that uses what’s known as the asynchronous snippet), and you also need to be the site administrator on the site for this option to work.

If this option doesn’t work for you, yoiu may not be the administrator for the site in Analytics (check your Analytics account), or you may be using an old version of tracking code on your site (in which case get the newer tracking code and replace the code on your site for the newer tracking code.

Option 4 – Change your site’s DNS settings

This is pretty advanced. You’ll need to visit the website of the company that hosts your website, log in and edit some of the advanced DNS settings on your domain. Google Webmaster Tools provides information on how to do this, but it’s a little advanced for some users, and should only really be used as a last resort.

Finished?

Hopefully one of these four options works for you, and you’ll be able to validate that you own the site.

Having a problem with site verification? Please add a comment below, with as much detail as possible, and we’ll try to help!

I didn’t get much by way of response to the website notes published after last week’s course (See SEO Course April 2012 – Week One), which either means it’s all making sense, or no-one’s reading these course notes.

Week Two is always a fairly intensive one as we dive into stats and tags. Here’s a quick recap:

Material covered

Google Analytics – A look at what the service offers, how to check site visits, popular pages, keywords looking at referring sites

Definition of Google Page Rank – not as important as it once was, but still useful

Use of sites such as Alexa to check on the details and popularity of your site, and stats on your competitors

Use of sites such as Majestic SEO – A look at this handy backlinks tool

Screenshot of Alexa Rankings for a website

Progress so far

We’re at the half-way stage in the course now, and have started to dive into the on-page optimisation, by looking at the all-important META tag data. I appreciate that for some on the course, some of this is new territory, but this is an introduction to the topic and the issues, so even if you’re not able to dive right in yet, this is all stuff you need to be aware of, and it should all come together by the end of the course. If you have any questions at all – please ask in the box below!

Before next week

It’d be great if you can set yourself up a Google Webmaster Tools account for next week, and set it up to check on your site. This will allow us to start looking at how Google sees your website. The address for Google Webmaster Tools is www.google.com/webmasters/tools/, and the account is free. (Need help? See Set up your site for Google Webmaster Tools)

Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard

If you’re one of the 10 students on the course, it’ll be great to know that you’re reading these notes – so please add a quick comment or question in the box below. Happy to help with free answers to any of your questions.

The course had a good healthy number of attendees: Gill, Lee, Kevin, Paul, Luke, Brian, Michelle, Shirley and Mark.

As with all of the web courses that I look after, there’s a varying degree of skill mixes – some who are very experienced with web development, mixed with those yet to get online with their first website. I appreciate that it may be daunting for some of you, especially when I answer questions about subjects that you’ve not yet been exposed to, but it will become clearer as we go on. Honest!

Hopefully in Week One of the course, we have established a shared language, and are familiar with the concepts that people search in very different ways, and it’s not always easy to predict how users will find your site. It’s also important to remember that because of personalisation, not everyone sees the same results when doing the same Google search.

We also discussed how search engines spider your site, and some of the things that won’t help your site to rank well. These include:

Not having ALT tags on your images

Use of Javascript for text content

Use of Frames

Over use of keywords, a.k.a keyword stuffing

Duplicate content

Over-use of Flash, or content that contains little or no plain text

Next week, we will be diving into web stats, and how these can be used to understand how your visitors interact with your site.

The SEO course was last run in January 2012, and you might be interested to read the post that I put together after the first week of that course back in January: SEO January 2012 Week One Notes.

Homework for next week:

Ideally, it would be great if you could sign up to a free Google Analytics account, and get the tracking code on your site.

I appreciate that it may not be possible for all of you to do this, so note a problem if you can’t. If you need any help getting Google Analytics set up, add a comment below, and I’ll try to help.

If you can’t, have a look to see what other web stats you can access between now and next week. Most web site providers offer some kind of stats service, possibly something that shows number of visitors, perhaps like this:

Ideally, see what you can get, and we’ll discuss what it all means next week. If you want to read ahead, see my article: Web Stats: Understanding Your Audience

It would also be good to know that you’re reading these notes, so if you’re on the course, please add a quick comment or question in the box below – it’ll be good to know you’re reading, and it’s a way of asking any questions ahead of next Monday’s session.

Maximising Your Website – Week One

Understanding your audience is key. In the first week, we look at the basics of web stats.

Webalizer or AW Stats are often provided free with your website. Example of AW Stats

Free webstats: Google Analytics (Example: Sample Google Stats)

GetClicky.com – Powerful stats, plus Live Spy.GetClicky Review

A great way to find out what your site visitors think of your site… is to ask them!

Maximising Your Website - Week Two

In this week’s course, we look at how to health-check your website to make sure that there are no significant problems. It will be helpful to have Google Webmaster Tools set up on your site. To do this, create a free Google Webmaster Tools account, add details of your website, and follow the instructions to “validate” that you are the owner of your site.

We also look at HTML validation and the W3C Markup Validator

We also discuss “404 – Page Not Found” handling, and touch on the basics of Search Engine Optimisation (See our SEO Course).

Maximising Your Website - Week Three

We look at ways to interact with your audience, including forums, blogs, comments, newsletters and social media. Some handy links:

Maximising Your Website - Week Four

In the final week of the course, here’s more on Social Networking, then details of how to get your site to start making money. We also look at site maps, site search, Live Chat and Multi-variant testing.

Duplicate Content Checker – Make sure your site isn’t being penalised

If you run a website or a blog, having a Sitemap on your site is certainly worth considering. The main purpose of a sitemap is to help people (and search engines) to navigate around your site, as we’ll explore on this page.

First off, note that there are two types of sitemap, and they both have different uses:

1. HTML Sitemap

This is a webpage listing all of the pages on your site. It’s there to help humans primarily, as opposed to search engines.

This site has a sitemap, and you can have a look to see how we do ours: Essexmax Sitemap

2. XML Sitemap

This type of sitemap is there to help robots, spiders and search engines. It is computer-generated, and non-human-friendly. If you were to look at one, it would be pages of stuff like this.

Extract of an XML Sitemap

This site has a sitemap, and you can have a look to see how we do ours: Essexmax XML Sitemap

For webmasters, the XML sitemap is a must for your site, and we’ll explain why…

Why use an XML sitemap?

With an XML sitemap, you can prepare a list of every single page on your site, and present it to search engines such as Google or Bing in a format that they can digest easily. When you update your site, you should update the XML sitemap, so that the likes of Google can see the changes.

An XML sitemap contains not only the address of the page, but the date it was last updated, how often the page gets updated, and its importance compared to other pages on your site.

Assuming you have created yourself a free account with Google Webmaster Tools, you can submit your XML sitemap to Google, and then get information about what Google thinks of your sitemap. They’ll tell you if there’s a problem with the sitemap, when they last looked at it, and how many pages of your map they have added to their index. Here’s a screenshot of Google Webmaster Tools assessment of one of our sitemaps.

Google Webmaster Tools Sitemaps

From this you can see that we have two active sitemaps, one for the site’s main pages, and one for the site’s blog. No errors are being reported, and each page that is in the sitemap has been indexed by Google, which is a very good sign.

How to create an XML Sitemap

This depends on how your site is put together, but essentially there are three options:

Use a web-based Sitemap Generator, such as XML Sitemaps. This will crawl your website and make a downloadable sitemap of every page it finds. The downside is that it won’t add an entry for “orphan” pages, i.e. pages on your site that no other page links to. Ideally, you want to make sure your sitemap includes all of the pages you care about

Use a sitemap builder programme for your computer. We’ve played with the free Sitemap Generator, but are currently using Site Map Pro (which you have to pay for). These can use used to scan your local copy of your website, meaning that all pages get added, not just the ones a spider can find

If you’re using a Content Management System (CMS) such as WordPress or Joomla, then get a plug-in to do the work for you. This website is powered by WordPress, and we use the excellent free plug-in ‘Google XML Sitemaps’, such does all the hard work for us, and automatically updates each time we add a new page or post

Questions on sitemaps

We had a question in from Mark, who attended our SEO Course in January 2012. He asks: “On the last day of the course you reiterated the major points of a sitemap for websites. However on this site you have an html sitemap. Do you also have an xml sitemap in the background for google etc or did you submit the html version and if so why?”

We have both an HTML and an XML sitemap on this site. There is a link to the HTML sitemap at the bottom of each page (to help humans), but we don’t generally link to the XML sitemap directly. This is because it’s only robots that care about the XML version. Ours is at www.essexmax.co.uk/sitemap.xml

So, how do robots and search engines know where to find it? For starters, we use the standard naming convention, sitemap.xml, and place the file in the root of the website. This is exactly where search engines look for it. By putting it in the place they’re going to look, we make it easy for them. Also, within Google Webmaster Tools, there is the option to add your sitemap, if they havent already found it.

So, to answer the question – We have an XML sitemap in the background, but an HTML sitemap for our lovely human visitors.

The fourth and final week of our Search Engine Optimisation Course was on Monday the 30th of January 2012, and as ever, was a lively session. After covering the on-page optimisation in week 3, for the final week, we looked at things that need to be done site-wide, and off site. Here’s a summary

Links to your site

Getting links into your site are key to getting it noticed. You can check how many links you currently have, and how valuable they are, by creating a free Majestic SEO account

Screenshot of Majestic SEO in action

If you’re looking for some suggested things to try to get a few quality incoming links, here are some ideas:

Ask for a link from your suppliers, customers, etc

Make good use of social networking – Facebook, Twitter or YouTube

Get yourself listed in a couple of directories

Have a look at your competition’s links for inspiration

Find out where your audience hang out, and join them online

Make contact with people in your field, and ask them for a link

Don’t buy links, and remember that you’re after links from relevant sites – it’s quality, not quantity

Sitemaps

A sitemap is a very important tool – it helps the search engines to find each page on your site, especially the pages that the likes of Google may not be able to find.

Here are a few links on the subject:

An example of an HTML webpage sitemap: Our Sitemap

An example of an XML (Google compliant) sitemap: XML Sitemap

Online Sitemap Generator: XML Sitemaps (will only find crawlable pages)

Two applications for your computer: Sitemap Generator (free download), or Site Map Pro (paid download)

We’ve added some more information on Sitemaps. See Using Sitemaps on your site

SEOMoz

We also took a very quick look at SEO Moz – This is a great tool for tracking your SEO progress, but it’s not cheap, and unless you do SEO for a living, this might not be a good investment for you – however, if you have the budget, this is a top tool for managing all things SEO, with lots of nice automated reports.

A screenshot of a SEOMoz Campaign

Next Steps

Thanks to everyone who attended the course – there was a lot to squeeze in, and hopefully everyone found a few things to take away and start working on.

If you’re bitten by the bug, the Maximising Your Website course should be running on the 20th of February. Take a look at the course summary, and if you’re interested, call the college on 01702 220400 to book a place.

Meta Tags are vital to on-page optimisation, and following one of our recent courses, I thought it would be helpful to recap the basics of meta tags

What is a Meta Tag?

These are typically found in the source code of a web page, in between the <head> and the </head> tags. Remember, to see a page’s source code, right-click on the page and select “View source”.

Here is is a screenshot of a chunk of meta tags, from our Example Page:

A sample set of Meta tags from a site's head section

Some of the tags here are not relevant to SEO, but for the sake of consistancy, we’ll look at each one individually:

The TITLE Tags

There are two here, although using just the first one will be fine. These define the title of the web page, and typically appear in two places – On the web browser’s title bar, and in the Google results. Try to keep the title fairly short, closely related to the content on the page, and containing your keyword or phrase. For example. “Essex Max Homepage” is not as good as “Website optimisation in Essex from Essex Max”

Title Tag in a web browser Title Bar

I tend to favour using a capital letter for each word.

The Title Tag in Google Results

The DESCRIPTION Tag

This is very important tag for SEO use, and it’s where you can use a couple of sentences to describe what the contents of the page is all about. You’d write this as you’d write a normal couple of sentences, for example “We explain what a meta tag is, how to use it, and why it is so important in the world of SEO. Friendly advice from Essex Max.”

The description tag is frequently used by Google in the description field when you see a list of sites. It is therefore important that the text is relevant and encourages the searcher to click on the link. Here is an example of Description text in a Google search:

Description Tag in Google Results

The KEYWORDS Tag

This tag is largely redundant these days. Google no longer use these, but some other search engines might. If you’re going to use them, aim for no more than 10 words or phrases, and have them all lowercase, e.g. “southend, southend search engine, search engine course”

Content Type

Nothing to do with SEO, this is saying that the page contains HTML text, using a Western character set.

The ROBOTS Tag

This tag is an instruction to search engines. If set to “noindex, follow”, the search engine is instructed not to add the page to the search index, but to follow (i.e. “go to”) any links on the page. More info on this: Robot files and tags explained

The STYLESHEET Tag

Nothing to do with SEO. In this example, the tag is being used to tell the web browser where to find information about how to display the page (font sizes, colours, etc)

The REL = Canonical Tag

This is used as a tool in the fight against duplicate content. Let’s use the example of this website. We own the .co.uk and the .com – The way our site and the web works, is there can be multiple web addresses that all point to the same page, for example:

essexmax.co.uk

www.essexmax.co.uk

www.essexmax.co.uk/index.php

essexmax.com

www.essexmax.com

www.essexmax.com/index.php

These will all take you to the same page, and happen as a result of the way web addresses work. You may find that you have pages on your site that look like duplicates, but in fact they aren’t. In these cases, you can use the CANONICAL tag to tell search engines which web address is the definitive one for a page.

This only needs to be used on pages where there may be another address out there for the same page.

Checking Your Meta Tags

It’s well worth checking your site in Google Webmaster Tools to check that there are no errors or problems with your meta tags.Look under the “Diagnostics” section for your site, and look at the “HTML Suggestions” to see what Google has to say. Here’s an example of what you might see there:

Google Webmaster Tools Diagnostics Meta Errors
