A hike to the Hollywood Sign is one of the most fun things to do in Los Angeles. Here’s how to get the best view of the world-renowned sign so that you can photograph it.

Best Place to View and Photograph the Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign is perched high upon Mount Lee but its view is not restricted to the Hollywood Hills; in fact, on a clear day the sign can be seen for miles and miles.

The sign is famously hard to get near, so we take a look at four easy spots to get a terrific view of the landmark.

The Hollywood Sign is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. It is 45-feet tall and spans 350-feet wide. Originally created as a real estate advertisement in 1923, the iconic Hollywood Sign has fallen into disrepair many times, reaching its most dilapidated state in the 1970s. At one point the sign read: “HullyWO D.”

In 1978 Alice Cooper campaigned to save the sign and the Hollywood Sign Trust was formed to maintain the sign and protect the area. This means you cannot actually visit the sign itself, not without getting arrested anyway. So here are four safe and legal places to view the Hollywood sign.

Hollywood Sign View #1: Griffith Observatory

 
The Griffith Observatory is on Mount Hollywood, east of the Sign’s Mount Lee. This tall spot has become almost as memorable as the sign itself after appearing in Rebel Without A Cause — so when it comes to sight seeing you’ll kill two birds with one stone. This location also offers great views of Downtown LA.

This is one of the city’s preferred spots for you to view the sign. There is lots of parking for visitors and hiking trails that offer different views of the sign (even if this is not the spot you choose to see the sign from, it’s still an excellent place to visit).

Hollywood Sign View #2: Hollywood & Highland

 
The Hollywood & Highland Center is a shopping complex with 75 shops and restaurants. Built in 2001 along with the Nokia Theater, which is home to the Academy Awards, the center piece is a three story courtyard with two giant statues of elephants on pillars. This design was inspired by the Babylon set from D.W. Griffith film Intolerance:

At the back of the courtyard on the third floor is a bridge which offers a picturesque view of the Hollywood Sign and comes with coin operated viewing binoculars. It’s the easiest place to visit and offers a fantastic view of the sign. Unfortunately the bridge isn’t very wide so it’s hard to fit you and your friends in a photo with the sign from this location.

Hollywood Sign View #3: Beachwood Drive

Off the beaten track you can view the Hollywood Sign up close by traveling into the Hollywood Hills through Beachwood Drive. This street heads north from Franklin Ave and is just east of the Vine exit on the 101.

The Hollywood Hills is a residential area that isn’t fond of the extra traffic from sign seekers so be respectful and drive carefully up the long windy roads. At the top you’ll see an area to park just before a Ranch. The Ranch is private property but a small trail by the gate leads to some nice views of the Sign without trespassing.

This is probably the best spot to get a photo of someone with the sign. To get a good look at the sign on your photo make sure there is some distance between you and who your photographing, and then zoom in (if you are too close to the person you are photographing they sign will look tiny).

Hollywood Sign View #4: Lake Hollywood

 
Lake Hollywood is my favorite view of the Hollywood Sign, it has the benefit of being nice and close to the sign up in the Hollywood Hills but it’s also a hiking spot and so you are surrounded by picturesque wildlife and nature.

I recommend you enter at the Weidlake Gate which is the southern exit. You can access this from the Vine exit on the 101 but be sure to have a map or fully charged GPS as the roads can be a bit of a labyrinth.

Once you enter the Reservoir head towards the Dam on the left. Crossing the dam you will see the glorious lake and trees with the Hollywood Sign looking down on you.

This is a great place to take guests and visitors wanting to see the sign because it also shows off many of LA’s hidden nature spots.

Echo Mountain is a must for hikers and those keen on LA history.

Hiking LA is one of the most fun things do in Southern California, and one of the benefits to living in this warm-weather metropolis near the sea. While there are many hiking trails in Los Angeles — all of them unique in their own way — Echo Mountain is arguably one of the most enjoyable.

Perhaps what sets the Echo Mountain hike apart from other Los Angeles hikes is that it not only allows you to experience Southern California nature, it also give you a taste of history.
 

Hiking LA: The White City

 
At the top of the hiking trail at Echo Mountain sits the burnt-out ruins of The White City, a late 19th Century hotel. The hotel was built in 1896 by Professor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, an inventor and Civil War balloonist (no, I don’t know what that job really means either) and engineer David J. MacPherson.

Together they built the resort 3,207 feet above sea level with two hotels, an observatory and a small zoo. It became a must-see attraction. Guests were not expected to hike to the resort, instead they took a tram line that was built to reach the complex!

After a series of fires and windstorms the resort was abandoned in 1938 but its remains are still on view for anyone that enjoys a good hike.
 

Hiking LA: Relics and Ruins

 
Following the trail up Echo Mountain you will know when you’re close to the hotel’s concrete foundations when you pass the rusted tram still sitting on an abandoned track. Just a short stretch up is a giant wheel that was used to pull the tram along its 4-mile journey through the mountains. I’m sure this tram journey was at least half the fun back when it was in operation.

At the site of the remains, many sign posts show pictures of the original hotel accompanied by text on the history of each spot.

When you are done with the stellar view of Pasadena that stretches out to Downtown LA (I’m told you can even see the ocean on a clear day) you can then cross the ruins towards Castle Canyon, the big mountain that Echo Mountain foots.
 

Hiking LA: Echophone

 
Past the ruins you will find the Echophone.

This peak is named Echo Mountain because when you shout into Castle Canyon you get a clear repeated echo. At some point the Boy Scouts tested out the quality of the echos and found what they called the sweet spots. They then placed metal megaphones pointed at Castle Canyon. Replicas of the Echophones remain for you to try out yourself. The original Echophones are now parts of personal or museum collections.
 

How Hard a Hike Is It?

 
This hike is a five mile round trip, two and a half to the peak, and back down again.

The first half can be a little tough (especially in the summer), so remember your water and maybe a protein bar. At the top there is a picnic area surround by pine trees, this well-shaded spot is a great place to cool down and rest before you head home.

To access the Echo Mountain hike drive towards Pasadena and exit the 210 to head north on Lake Avenue. At the head of the road you can get street parking and follow the path on the right that enters Angeles National Forest.

The Griffith Park Observatory

Griffith Park is an enormous, dimensional recreation spot in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, filled with locals and tourists enjoying its stellar views, extraordinary science, and spectacular hikes.

Contrary to typical expectations for a city park, Griffith is no square field of green. With its tall mountains and 50 miles of hiking trails, it has more in common with a national park. The difference is, it’s surrounded by city, which makes it a great viewing platform.
 

Griffith Park Observatory

 
The Griffith Observatory is a popular destination and a must for anyone in town for more than a few days. Placed on Mount Hollywood, the art deco building was first opened in 1935. Its many science exhibits and displays are free to visitors but you’ll have to pay to watch the planetarium show.
 

Seeing the Sights at Griffith Park

 
Walking along the grounds of this beautiful white building is wonderful and its views of the city are perhaps unmatched. It’s certainly one of the best spots to check out the Hollywood sign.

The park is also home to:

•   Bronson Canyon
•   Roosevelt Golf Course
•   Travel Town Museum

The many hiking trails allow you to escape city life and really feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
 

History of Griffith Park

 
Looking at the landscape you’d think you were in a western film and that’s because many a western was shot there. You may also come across Bronson Caves which was used as the Bat Cave in the 1960′s Batman TV series.

Colonel J. Griffith donated the land to the City of Los Angeles in 1896. One story says Griffith believed every great city needed a park; another story says he wanted to get rid of the land after being spooked by the ghost of previous owner Antonio Feliz.

Ghost or no ghost, Griffith was constantly trying to improve the park, but after spending time in jail for shooting and severely wounding his wife in 1903 the city wanted nothing to do with him and refused his money. Instead, Griffith created a Trust Fund for the park which eventually funded The Griffith Observatory after his death.

Residents of Los Angeles can also enjoy the yearly Griffith Park Holiday Light Festival which takes place every Christmas.

Recent home sales statistics reveal that foreign investors are buying California real estate, $16 billion more than last year.

According to Marquette Turner, in the 12 months ending in March 2011, foreign investors purchased nearly 8% of all homes sold, up from 7% the year before, for a total of $82 billion invested.

Foreign Investors Are Paying Cash for their Second Homes

 
The majority of foreign investors intend to use the home they purchase in the US as either a vacation (or second) home, or a rental investment property.

Most are wealthy investors who pay for the extra home in cash, and they choose the home primarily for its location, with California and Florida perceived as the most desirable locations. Most of the buyers have their “first homes” located in either Canada, Asia, Europe. Perhaps most startling was that over 11% of foreign real estate investors in the US come from South America.

Paramount Studios Tour is an excellent way to get an intimate view of film-making history.

Situated at 5555 Melrose Avenue in Hollywood and founded in 1912, Paramount is the oldest existing film studio and the last major film studio still based in Hollywood.

The two-hour Paramount Studios Tour is intimate thanks to the limit on group sizes. A knowledgeable tour guide will drive you and 5 others around in a cart. This small scale affair means you get to ask questions and play trivia games with your host. The tour guide even asked us what we’re most interested in seeing so he could make it a priority.
 

Home of King Kong

You’ll get a double dose of film history on this tour. In the 1960′s Paramount purchased neighboring studio RKO which was the home of Citizen Kane, King Kong and later owned by Howard Hughes.
 

 
The RKO studio was later bought by Lucille Ball who used the lot to produce Star Trek. That’s right, Lucille Ball produced Star Trek ( <--- click on the link to see the backlot footage)! The sci-fi franchise has had a home at Paramount ever since.
 

What’s on the Paramount Studios Tour?

Driving around in the cart you’ll see many celebrity trailers and it’s likely you’ll see at least one TV or movie star walking around. You’ll probably just get a polite nod although the tour guide told us when Cheers was being filmed that Ted Danson and Woody Harrison would hijack tours.

Depending on filming schedules you’ll also get to visit an indoor set (currently filming at Paramount is Glee and Community) and walk through the backlot which includes “New York Street” a series of fake streets designed to look like parts of New York and used in countless movies and TV shows.

Although pictures inside the studio are not allowed as they want to protect copyright, the tour finishes up at the original and iconic studio gates where everyone gets a photo opportunity. You also get to sit on the famous bus stop bench from Forrest Gump which is now placed a short distance from the gate.
 

VIP treatment

The tour staff were extraordinarily professional and very accommodating. For instance, I didn’t realize that you need to reserve a ticket, so when I arrived the security, co-ordinators and tour guide all tried to make sure they could accommodate me.

All in all, the Paramount Studio Tour is a great experience for someone wanting to get a real, up-close and personal view of a working film studio. While Universal Studio’s tour is a thrill ride, it is definitely more a ride than a tour. At Paramount you get a more personal experience that makes you feel like a VIP.

Paramount is the oldest existing movie studio and is currently owned by Viacom. It’s consistently ranked as one of the top-grossing film studios in the world. Some of its most successful films include Titanic, Forrest Gump, Beverly Hills Cop, War of the Worlds, and Ghost.

Find out what Los Angeles was like 38,000 years ago at the La Brea Tar Pits.

Located in Miracle Mile on Wilshire Blvd, La Brea Tar Pits is a unique area of Los Angeles because its history goes back further than any other — waaaaaaaay back.
 

This Tar Has Been Around a Long Time

 
Not many places in LA can stretch back more than a hundred years, but “The Pits” have a long history …dating back a full 38,000 years!

This cluster of tar pits has swallowed up many animals and its asphalt lakes are perfect for preserving bones and fossils. This gives us an inside look at the Los Angeles area before the motion picture was invented!

From 1915 to 1975, La Brea Tar Pits was an excavation site but in 1977 the owner opened a museum and named it after himself. The George C. Page Museum houses the many findings of the pits.
 

Tar Reveals What the World Was Really Like

 
Taking a look around the museum you will come across many strange sites like a wall of hundreds of wolf heads — the tar pits were a sticky trap that caught thousands of animals over thousands of years! It also contains many specimens and life-size models including mammoths, wolves, bears, sloths and saber-toothed cats!
 

Spanish Explorers first made a written record of the tar pits in 1769, which would explain the spanish name. La Brea actually means: The Tar, so it’s technically called The Tar Tar Pits.
 

Kids Enjoy the Tar Pits, Too

You have to pay to enter the museum but walking around the actual tar pits is free. Its green grass is very scenic but don’t sit on it as tar creeps up from the ground in all sorts of places. You might want to check the bottom of your shoes before you get home too.

Although this is a great destination for a family trip, the grim models of a mammoth family tragically loosing a loved one as it sinks into the heavy oil is an odd sight, especially with smiling families posing for photos with them.

Inside the museum is displayed a skeleton of a 9,000 year-old woman who was murdered (skull crushed) and then tossed into the pits, where she was then perfectly preserved for thousands of years. It’s absolutely fascinating, but also a bit disturbing — so if you bring the kids, have your answers prepared!
 

Guided Tours at the Tar Pits

Before visiting call ahead and find out when the guided tours are. On my tour, the guide was amazing. He was an old man with a well-groomed grey mustache sporting a grey cap, large 1940s style pants and braces over a white shirt. He introduced himself by telling us how he got involved with La Brea Tar Pits. As a teenager, he heard that George C Page was paying young men to dig through the tar pits so he moved to Los Angeles and asked for a job. He’s been at the pits ever since, first as an excavationist and then as a member of the museum staff when it first opened.

The amount of history and detail he knew about the place was extraordinary and I couldn’t imagine a better guide than someone who’s lived their whole adult life at the Tar Pits.

There were other eccentricities you won’t find at other museums, on the grounds was a cowboy busker singing away old tunes with a La Brea twist. He transformed ‘Old MacDonald Had A Farm’ into ‘Old Man Page Had A Tar Pit’ and then proceeded to replace all the farm animals with the ice-age mammals in the museum. It was very grin-worthy.
 

They’re Still Pulling Stuff Out of the Tar

La Brea is still a working excavation site. Although the big animals have all been removed they now concentrate on insects and plant life, including pollen grain. You can check out the ongoing excavation of Pit 91 from a viewing platform. Plus, they are always looking for volunteers if you want to get your hands dirty with the Paleontologists. Remember to bring clothes you’ll never wear again as no laundry detergent can remove asphalt.

Could Century City Be the Next Grove?

 
Century City has a location that is ideal in many ways. The community is located centrally between the Westside of LA and the eastern areas.

What many people like, is that the community is directly next to Beverly Hills and also close enough to the ocean to enjoy the improved air quality of sea breezes.

Also a plus, is that it’s not so far west that one has to transverse the dreaded traffic gridlock of Wilshire at the 405 freeway.

However, the lack of walkability within Century City (and lack of architectural diversity) has previously given the community a bit of a sterile feel.

Even so, there’s something about the vibe of Century City that has always been appealing. Over the years the community has become — gradually but consistently — more appealing in the minds of Los Angeles residents.

Now, there is a new plan to dramatically improve the Century Plaza Hotel that will make Century City even more walkable. If the plan is implemented, it will upgrade the entire surrounding areas of the hotel, and it could be the game-changer Century City has been waiting for its whole life.

Shopping, fitness, luxury condos, offices, and hotel rooms — this new planned development could revitalize Century City in a similar way that the The Grove reinvigorated the Third Street, mid-city area of Los Angeles.

As the Entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles is a great place to explore movie history at Hollywood memorabilia auctions. A recent auction brought in millions of dollars for some historically famous items.

Actress Debbie Reynolds recently sold off her personal collection. She purchased the collection originally in 1970 when MGM Studios sold off its Hollywood costumes and props.

A Huge Historical Hollywood Movie Prop Collection

 
Originally, Reynolds attempted to share this collection by opening a museum for the public but this endeavor lead her into debt. Luckily, the collection was placed on display at the Paley Center For Media in Beverly Hills for several weeks, allowing many locals to view this assembly of famous film memorabilia. Although it was not a permanent museum, we hope Debbie Reynolds was able to see the excited public as they viewed the props and costumes!
 

Checking out the auction was an amazing experience. So many unlikely sights we’d never have expected to come face to face with.

There were costumes from Planet Of The Apes, The Sound Of Music, My Fair Lady, Ben Hur and many more.

It also included items from Laurel & Hardy’s car (my personal favorite), Charlie Chaplin’s bowler hat and Clark Gable’s dressing room and robes from Gone With The Wind.

Curiously, the costumes made for black and white films were in simple shades of brown (which makes sense when you think about it).

Big Money

 
The jewel of the collection was Marilyn Monroe’s infamous dress from The Seven Year Itch — from the iconic scene where the subway grate blows air up Marilyn’s dress, revealing her legs. This sold for an astounding $5.6 million, way above the estimated $2.5 million.

Other big sellers among the 400 items included:

• Judy Garland’s Dress from The Wizard Of Oz ($910,000)
• Red Slippers from The Wizard Of Oz ($510,000)
• Marilyn Monroe’s red-sequined dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ($1.2 million)
• Julie Andrew’s guitar from The Sound Of Music ($140,000)
• Harpo Marx’s top hat and curly wig ($45,000)

In total, the auction items are expected to have made $22.5 million dollars! The other half of Reynold’s collection will be sold off in another auction in December of 2011.
