New York Fashion Week Fall 2011

When you live all the way across the world like I do now, New York Fashion Week can whizz right by without you even noticing. Yes, plus a real (all-consuming) job doesn’t help.

So as I am catching up on all the highlights from NYFW today (yes for the first time!), I am really loving the polished, flowy silhouettes of the Fall 2011 collections. And if you are going to invest in only one fall item, definitely get a parka.

The Man Behind My Favourite “Digital Park Bench” - The Satorialist

To me, Scott Schuman has always been just a name I associate with one of my favourite fashion blogs, The Satorialist. It has never occurred to me to find out what he looks like (apart from his profile photo on his blog), much less what he sounds like. So this documentary with him in action really gives me a whole new dimension to who he is and. And to see how fashion blogging that looks so effortless is actually really hard work.

Besides the amazing street fashion photos, Scott Schuman also shoots videos forStyle.com.

p.s. “Digital park bench” is such a great description for the internet. I am so stealing it. :)

Last week, Gareth Pugh surprised his attendees for his Spring 2011 show, by showing an 11-minute video instead of a runway show.

There were lots of buzz in fashion news asking if this would be the way of the future. Well, if you ask me, that will be the inevitable eventuality given what we see happening in technology.

Call me old-school, but I think there’s something quite special seeing actual living and breathing beings showcasing these talents pieces of art live. And it is just not the same seeing a perfectly crafted piece of film like Gareth Pugh’s video….

Fashion’s Night Out 2010 NYC - My First Ever!

With the excitement of New York Fashion Week which has come and gone in a blur, Fashion’s Night Out feels like such a distant memory… However, cutting and watching the footage all over again quickly brought back the buzz from the night. Street party meets shopping extravaganza!

This being my first ever experience, I started with a COMPLETELY, UTTERLY unrealistic list:

agnes b., Balenciaga, Bergdorfs, Chloe, Diane Von Furstenburg, Elizabeth & James, Opening Ceremony, Patricia Fields Boutique and rag & bone.

What I ended up covering were:

Opening Ceremony @Ace Hotel
Diane Von Furstenburg
Scoop
Stella McCartney
Tracy Reese
Marc Jacobs
Marni

The highlights for the night for me was seeing Alexander Wang and Diane Von Furstenburg (back of her head at least!) and a photo with Selma Blair.

We also ALMOST spotted Karl Largefeld, Kayne West and Heidi Klum in Soho.

Overall an amazing night and now at least I can say “Been there, done that and got the T-shirt!” :)

If like me, you can only watch New York Fashion Week vicariously through blogs and live streaming shows, here’s a video I really like from the New York Times. It really captures the backstage mood and action of the Nicholas K show, the FIRST opening show at the brand new location at Lincoln Center! Imagine the pressure and expectations!!

I am still going to work on getting access to a show, ANY show! And for now I am happy to be attending the Tweetup at the American Express Skybox with Mickey Boardman of PaperMag.

It’s crazy cool how you can make your own fashion video, from picking your own track, choosing the video clips, recording the video and sending it to your friends, with just a few clicks on your keyboard. Something that is completely unfathomable just mere six months ago….

A Great (Stylist) Weekend @Hester Street Fair

One thing I LOVE about New York City is you ever so often find the best fashion finds when you least expect it. You will be heading to lunch with a girlfriend and you chance upon an amazing sample sale, find the most incredible trinket shop in the most unlikely neighborhood, or pick up designer items for a song at a flea market. And Hester Street Fair is definitely one of those places where you are likely to stumble across these surprising gems, especially during their Stylist Weekend Event, where fashion insiders clear out their closets and put great fashion items at bargain prices. The treasures I found definitely made my day.

Even if you don’t pick up anything, the fair is still a great place to while away a lazy Summer afternoon.

And if you are one who need more fashion action, here’s a video on some more great ideas.

1950’s Glamour

Fifties fashion has never been my thing. It’s a silhouette that I don’t think flatters my frame and also where I come from vintage is not exactly accessible. But for Fall 2010, they are coming back in a big way! Prada is doing it, so is Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi , Iceberg, Nini Ricci and even Paul Smith.

Seeing the trend hitting the runway, I have to say I am now a convert. And if you remain unconvinced, watch the video and I guarantee you will fall in love with this ultra feminine silhouette.

AllSaints NYC Pool Party

If you guys have been following me on Twitter, you will know that I get really excited when fashion brands gets creative on the digital and social media. Like crazy excited! I was tweeting about the Burberry Interactive Ad Campaign and anything iPad like non-stop!

Couple of weeks ago, I came across a brand that their marketing brilliance goes beyond online, and that got me excited too. As you would have guessed from the title, the brand in question here is AllSaints, or AllSaints Spitalfields!

Shortly after the launch of their amazing stand-alone store in SOHO here, they have tied up with the legendary local party series, Jelly Pool Parties, here in Williamsburg, to present an 8-week concert series. Beyond just your concerts, they also have a really cool pop-up bar, model Agyness Deyn live vlogging the event and a create your own photo flipbook booth (which you can share digitally from website). Talk about a great brand experience!

Now if only they would bring some interactive fun to their iPad app….

Christopher Bailey on my favorite ad campaign

In case you have been hiding under a cyber rock and have not seen the Burberry FW2010 interactive ad campaign, you should do it RIGHT THIS MINUTE and be blown away!

Now that you have seen the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G campaign, this is the video with Christopher Bailey (the creative genius!!) talking about it. But if you don’t even like the ad, I’d say don’t bother with the video. It’s nowhere as brilliant as the ad.

And if you like acoustic indie type music, check out the Burberry Acoustic Series on the Burberry Youtube channel.

Phoebe Philo A/W 2010 - Perfect [VIDEO]

This video has captured the essence of the latest line from one of my favorite designers, Phoebe Philo, perfectly, and of course the title “Perfect” sums in up… erm perfectly too.

Best fashion film I have seen in a while. The flawless cinematography, lighting, styling, direction blew me away. Perfection in a film.

Kudos to the film director, Ruth Hogben and stylist, Kate Shillingford.

Fashion In The City… New York City No Less!

When you think New York, you think fashion capital of the world. So when I first moved here to New York City last year, I had visions of the streets dotted with trendy, stylish people like the ones you see on The Satorialist, Jak and Jil and Street Peeper. But boy was I disappointed! I rarely saw cool street fashion and the general public I saw on the streets were NOT stylish. OK, the fact I live in Financial (aka uncool) District where you get only the corporate types and tourists did not help…

BUT once I started to get to know the city better I learnt that you CAN see these individuals with great sartorial style, you just need to know where to look. And you can also find great fashion inspirations in so many other ways. There are always fashion events and exhibitions happening or even just looking in the right stores and streets will get you clued into what’s hot in fashion. So now I think: How lucky am I to be in one of the greatest fashion capitals where you get fashion education right at your doorsteps!

In this video, I want to share some of fashion happenings and places I checked out recently. Amongst them are an outdoor fashion exhibition where you can auction for the exhibits, an exhibition in one of world’s greatest museums, and all these many cool stores.

VOGUE has an iPad app!!

I can’t remember the last time I get THIS excited about a piece of news…. not when I saw Nicolas Ghesquière’s Resort 2011 collection, not when I received the emailer for Opening Ceremony’s sale (ok this came close) and not even the launch of the iPad. But when I read on L2 VOGUE has an iPad app, my heart skipped a beat and then raced a million mile an hour!

I have always (until recently) been a technological lagger, technology has always been something I only associate myself with only on a absolutely-need-to basis… mostly for work. And fashion + tech did not exist in my vocabulary. Why see fashion online when you can see them in their unadulterated form on a glossy or the actual form! And the iPad has changed that. It is now actually cool to tote an iPad (a tech device!) in your It bag, in fact you now want to own the latest Oscar De La Renta iPad clutch. And the experience of using it is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I cannot imagine I am actually saying this (on blogosphere on less!) , but reading a magazine on the iPad is BETTER than flipping through a glossy! There’s just something special about the colors, the layout, sliding the pages along with your fingers, and clicking on the interactive images or icons that surpasses plain ‘ol flipping through a printed magazine.

And up till yesterday days ago, I could only experience it for tech and men’s magazines like Wired and GQ. But that has changed now that VOGUE Germany has launch an iPad app! And I now wait with bated breath for the same to happen to US VOGUE. I am sure the day will come… hopefully really soon.

About et coupez

Now I know why we don’t get more people vlogging. It’s REALLY hard to watch and hear yourself over and over and over again. There were times (ok, maybe just a couple of them) when I had to stop editing just because I couldn’t bear to hear myself repeat the lines another time!

Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the video is horrid (god forbid, no), it’s just not something you would want to watch on repeat. And I really wouldn’t suggest anyone do that, BUT I would strongly encourage you to watch it once (maybe twice if you really like it) to find out more about et coupez and the vlogger behind it, moi. :)

In this video, you will also get a glimpse my fashion likes, such as my personal style, my favorite fashion designers (Nicolas Ghesquière, Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney) and the shops I like (Eryne Brinié, H&M, Opening Ceremony and Zara). My Fashion Heroines (Featuring Kelly Cutrone)

Ta da… my debut vlog post!! :)

I was actually planning to produce an “About et coupez” episode and put this up after, but I am just so excited so I’ll just go ahead and post this and do the ‘about’ one after. :)

In this debut episode, I have featured Kelly Cutrone’s book signing at Bryant Park Reading Room for her new book “If You Have To Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You” Yes, this is the very same Kelly Cutrone from The Hill, The City and Kell On Earth! The hour of Q&A with Kelly flew by, and she shared with us tips and advice on life, career and the fashion industry in a candid, funny and at the same time totally endearing way.

Kelly was super nice (in a mumsy meets punk way) and she signed each and every one of our books with personalized messages. I even got a greeting for et coupez from her on camera! Thanks Kelly! :)

In this episode I have also included two other fashion personalities that I adore, Grace Coddington and Garance Doré. They have been for great inspiration for me in both their fashion visions and their incredible personalities.
