jQuery is a cross-browser JavaScript library designed to simplify the client-side scripting of HTML. It was released in January 2006 at BarCamp NYC by John Resig. Used by over 49% of the 10,000 most visited websites, jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library in use today.

jQuery is free, open source software, dual-licensed under the MIT License or the GNU General Public License, Version 2. jQuery's syntax is designed to make it easier to navigate a document, select DOM elements, create animations, handle events, and develop Ajax applications. jQuery also provides capabilities for developers to create plug-ins on top of the JavaScript library. This enables developers to create abstractions for low-level interaction and animation, advanced effects and high-level, theme-able widgets. The modular approach to the jQuery framework allows the creation of powerful and dynamic web pages and web applications.

Cross-browser support

jQuery has two usage styles:

via the $ function, which is a factory method for the jQuery object. These functions, often called commands, are chainable; they all return jQuery objects
via $.-prefixed functions. These are utility functions which do not work on the jQuery object per se.

Typically, access to and manipulation of multiple DOM nodes begins with the $ function being called with a CSS selector string, which results in a jQuery object referencing matching elements in the HTML page. This node set can be manipulated by calling instance methods on the jQuery object, or on the nodes themselves.

HTML5 is the successor of HTML and XHTML which has been incubated as a mixture of features introduced by various specifications, along with those introduced by software products such as web browsers, those established by common practice, and the many syntax errors in existing web documents. Its core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices (web browsers, parsers, etc.). HTML5 is intended to subsume not only HTML 4, but XHTML 1 and DOM2HTML (particularly JavaScript) as well. Many features of HTML5 have been built with the consideration of being able to run on low-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets.

In particular, HTML5 adds many new syntactical features. These include the <video>, <audio>, <header> and <canvas> elements, as well as the integration of SVG content that replaces the uses of generic <object> tags. These features are designed to make it easy to include and handle multimedia and graphical content on the web without having to resort to proprietary plugins and APIs. Other new elements, such as <section>, <article>, <header> and <nav>, are designed to enrich the semantic content of documents. New attributes have been introduced for the same purpose, while some elements and attributes have been removed. Some elements, such as <a>, <cite> and <menu> have been changed, redefined or standardized. The APIs and document object model (DOM) are no longer afterthoughts, but are fundamental parts of the HTML5 specification. HTML5 also defines in some detail the required processing for invalid documents so that syntax errors will be treated uniformly by all conforming browsers and other user agents.

In addition to specifying markup, HTML5 specifies scripting application programming interfaces (APIs). Existing document object model (DOM) interfaces are extended and de facto features documented. There are also new APIs, such as:

Web SQL Database, a local SQL Database (no longer maintained).
The Indexed Database API, an indexed hierarchical key-value store (formerly WebSimpleDB).

A common misconception is that HTML5 can provide animation within web pages, which is untrue. Either JavaScript or CSS3 is necessary for animating HTML elements. Animation is also possible using JavaScript and HTML 4, and within SVG elements through SMIL, although browser support of the latter remains uneven as of 2011.

Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of making websites usable by people of all abilities and disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality. For example, when a site is coded with semantically meaningful HTML, with textual equivalents provided for images and with links named meaningfully, this helps blind users using text-to-speech software and/or text-to-Braille hardware.

Following are the key features which need to be implemented to make the website accessible:

1	A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided (e.g., via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content).
2	Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation.
3	Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup.
4	Documents shall be organized so they are readable without requiring an associated style sheet.
5	Redundant text links shall be provided for each active region of a server-side image map.
6	Client-side image maps shall be provided instead of server-side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape.
7	Row and column headers shall be identified for data tables.
8	Markup shall be used to associate data cells and header cells for data tables that have two or more logical levels of row or column headers.
9	Frames shall be titled with text that facilitates frame identification and navigation.
10	Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz.
11	A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes.
12	When pages utilize scripting languages to display content, or to create interface elements, the information provided by the script shall be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology.
13	When a web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with §1194.21(a) through (l).
14	When electronic forms are designed to be completed on-line, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues.
15	A method shall be provided that permits users to skip repetitive navigation links.
16	When a timed response is required, the user shall be alerted and given sufficient time to indicate more time is required.

When we create a new Web Application in SharePoint, following are various actions which happens behind the scene:

Creates a unique entry in SharePoint configuration DB for the Web Application and assign GUID to that entry.
Create and configures a new site in IIS
Creates and configures a new IIS application pool.
Configures authentication protocol and encryption settings.
Assign a Default alternate access mapping for the Web Application.
Creates the first content database for the Web Application.
Associate a search service with the Web application.
Assign a name to the Web application that appears in the Web application list in SharePoint Central Administration.
Assign general settings to the Web application, such as maximum file upload size and default time zone.
Updates the web.config file to make entries for custom HTTP Modules andHandlers for SharePoint.
Creates virtual directories for SharePoint web services and SharePoint layouts folder.

After creating a Web Application in SharePoint, the web site is actually not created yet. It means if you try to access the Web Application using the web app url, it will show you "Page cannot be displayed" error. Basically at this point of time, a web application has been created and all the mandatory configuration has been done. Now the next step is to create a Site Collection using a particular Site Definition, then only the actual site will be created and you will be able to access the site using the url of Site Collection.

Microsoft has released SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in the last week of June, 2011. This service pack includes all the public updates that were released through June 2011, and all the cumulative updates that were released through April 2011. It also consists of previously unreleased fixes that were made specifically for this service pack. In addition to general product fixes, this Service Pack also include enhancements and couple of new features.

Following are the various product fixes included in the SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1):
