Recently one of my friends bought a Dell laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled. He also bought a 3G based high speed data card. We just thought if we can share the same internet connection. Improving Performance of ASP.Net Web Applications

To improve performance of ASP.Net Web Applications, first of all we need to understand the places where performance bottlenecks typically occurs, the cause of these performance bottlenecks, and what steps need to be followed to prevent these performance bottlenecks.

Here I am going to list some of the best practices as per my experience and which I have used in my couple of ASP.Net projects to improve the performance of asp.net web applications:

1. Reduce Web Page Size:
Reduce the size of ASP.Net web pages. Processing large pages increases the load on the web server and increases the consumption of network bandwidth which will significantly increases the response time for clients. We can reduce the size of ASP.Net web pages by using following steps:

Break a large web page into multiple web pages
Rather that writing JavaScript code within the ASP.Net web page, write it in a .JS file and attach this file to ASP.Net web page using script includes.
Remove the white spaces (tabs and spaces) from HTML and ASP.Net code of the web pages

2. Use Page.IsPostBack Property:
Use Page.IsPostBack property to ensure that the page initialization logic executes only once when the page loads first time and not in the response to the client postbacks.

3. Set debug attribute to false:
Before deploying the ASP.Net web application or starting performance testing, make sure that the debug attribute is set to false in the web.config file and also in the web pages. If debug is set to true, it generates some additional files in the Temporary ASP.Net Files folder and also the System.Diagnostics.DebuggableAttribute attribute is added to the generated code, which significantly reduces the processing of web pages.

4. Use Caching:
Make use of ASP.Net caching wherever applicable to avoid unnecessary database lookups and other expensive data retrieval operations.

5. Disable ViewState:
Disable ViewState if there is no need of it. ViewState can be disabled for a particular control or at page level. Some of the examples where ViewState is not required: if web page is output only, if the page data is reloaded on each postback, if server control events are not handled, etc.

6. Use Connection Pooling:
For Database driven web applications, enable connection pooling which allows to reuse to the open database connections.

7. Use DataReader:
Use DataReader instead of DataSet wherever applicable. DataReader allows fast and efficient data binding.

8. Use Session State Efficiently:
If Session State is not used in your application, then you should disable Session State in your web application to eliminate redundant session processing performed by ASP.Net. Session State can be disabled by using following settings:

To disable Session State for all the ASP.Net web applications in a web server, apply following setting in the Machine.config file: <sessionState mode="Off" />
To disable Session State for a specific ASP.Net web application, apply following setting in the Web.config file of that web application: <sessionState mode="Off" />
To disable Session State for a specific web page, apply following setting in the Page directive of that web page: <@ Page EnableSessionState="false" .... />

9. Close or Dispose Resources Explicitly:
Once an object is no longer required for further processing, just call Dispose or Close method if one is provided to claim the memory and other resources used by this object. In general all the classes that implements IDisposable interface provides Close or Dispose methods.

10. Use Client-side Data Validation:
Use client-side data validations to reduce the round trips to the server. Client-side validations are already available out-of-the-box in all the ASP.Net data validation controls.

11. Use Server.Transfer instead of Response.Redirect:
Response.Redirect forces the client browser to send a new request to the server by using the specified URL while Server.Transfer avoids this and makes a server-side call directly. So its better to use Server.Transfer instead of Response.Redirect wherever applicable.

SharePoint Site Definitions: An Introduction

Introduction to SharePoint Site Definitions:
Site definitions are the foundation on which all sites are built in a SharePoint Server. Each site definition defines a unique type of SharePoint site. It is a collection of a files (.XML and .ASPX) that are located in the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates" directory. The site definition determines the basic look of the SharePoint site and also contains much of the site's functionality. Site definitions can include items such as web pages, content types, lists, libraries, navigation bars, site columns, web parts, workflows, features to be activated, etc. The site definition is largely determined by the Onet.xml file.

Once a SharePoint site is created using a site definition, it will automatically have all the web pages, web parts, lists, libraries, content types, page layouts, master pages, etc. which are defined in that particular site definition. In other words we can say that a site definition includes all the functionalities of a custom site in one place that we can repeatedly use to create instances of a particular type of site with consistent results.

All the site definitions available at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates" directory are registered with the SharePoint server using "WEBTEMP.XML" file which is located at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\1033\XML" directory. If a site definition's entry is not there in this "WEBTEMP.XML" file then this site definition will not appear in the list of site templates while creating new sharepoint site.

Limitation of Site Definitions:
SharePoint Site Definitions also has a limitation: any changes made in a site definition file will not affect existing sites, but it will reflect in the new sites created with this modified site definition.

Approaches to create Custom Site Definitions:
There are two approaches to create Custom Site Definition:

Create New Site Definition manually: Either Start from scratch and create files one by one or Copy an existing Site Definition and modify it. For example, to create a custom site definition that derives from the team site definition for Windows SharePoint Services, copy the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\STS" folder and modify the ONET.XML and .ASPX pages as per requirement.
Create new Site Definition project in Visual Studio and create the new site definition using IDE as per your requirement. But first we need to install SharePoint Site Definition project template for Visual Studio.

Once new site definition is created, register it to SharePoint server by adding its details in the "WEBTEMP.XML" file.

It also checks for SharePoint Products and Technologies system requirements, including the presence of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and a 64-bit machine, and provides feedback and best practice recommendations for your current environment, together with information on how to resolve any issues that the tool discovers.

In addition to operations for pre-upgrade scanning and variations analysis and repair, several operations are improved and new operations added to better support farm administration.

4. SP2 makes it easier to configure Excel Web Access Web Parts on new sites. Several rendering, calculation, and security issues have been resolved. SP2 also offers a range of improvements for users of InfoPath Forms Services. Performance enhancements in SP2 reduce both the memory requirements and the page load times for large browser-rendered forms. SP2 also improves the browser rendering of various controls, such as the Cannot be blank red asterisk and the rich text field.

Basically a service pack (SP) is a collection of updates, fixes and/or enhancements to a software program delivered in the form of a single installable package. Microsoft has also issued two service packs for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Following New Features are included in the WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Service Pack1 (SP1):

1. With SP1, WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 can be installed and used with Windows Server 2008 and IIS7.

2. It includes support for AJAX. Now developers can use AJAX to create custom Web Parts. Developers can create Web Parts for asynchronous post pack by using either the Microsoft AJAX 1.0 Control toolkit or the AJAX 1.0 Extensions for ASP.NET.

3. It includes following two new operations for the STSADM command line tool:

Mergecontentdbs: Permits a site collection to be moved from one content database to another when the parameters souredatabasename and destinationdatabasename are specified.
Renamesite: Changes a URL of a host-named site collection to a new URL.

4. MOSS 2007 SP1 includes few changes to the properties for the People Picker Web control. Once MOSS 2007 SP1 is installed, you can use the peoplepicker properties with setproperty and getproperty operations to define the scope of the People Picker Web control to an Active Directory® directory service organizational unit.

How to remove Write Protection from USB Pen Drive?

Recently I faced a very strange issue with my USB Pen Drive. When I tried to copy some files from my Laptop to Pen Drive, an error message popped up saying the USB Pen Drive is write protected. Then I tried deleting files and even formatting the USB Pen Drive, but it shows the same error message. I was only able to read the files and nothing else.

Some of the pen drives come with physical lock which we can use to switch on/off write protection on pen drive. But I have Kingston Pen Drive and it doesn't have any physical lock for write protection.

I searched on Internet and found that this problem can happen due to some virus attack. This happens when some virus or script which applies the registry hack to make any drive write protect when connected to the computer. And in case of virus attack, a pen drive with physical lock will also face the same problem even after switching off the physical lock for write protection.

Finally I found an utility program (Repair_v2.9.1.1.exe) which has successfully formatted my pen drive and after formatting it has started working again. I have downloaded this utility from http://fliiby.com/file/299859/k19kx1o9a6.html

Google Nexus One: A Smart Phone launched by Google

Finally most awaited Google Nexus One smart phone is launched last week. Google introduced the Nexus One as the first device to be sold by the search company itself, rather than a manufacturing or carrier partner. The Nexus One, which runs Android 2.1, has been designed by HTC and works with T-Mobile’s network in the United States. But contrary to initial speculation, the device isn’t free or unlocked. It will retail for $180 with a 2-year contract with T-Mobile. An unlocked version is also available for $530 — a price similar to most other smartphones — and that version will work on other GSM phone networks worldwide as well as AT&T in the United States, although with some limitations.

Google Nexus One is available only through Google’s online store in USA and in some other selected countries. Nexus One customers can only get e-mail support from Google. Currently Google is also charging a early termination fee in addition to the one charged by T-Mobile. Nexus One customers who bought the subsidized, $180 version and then decide to cancel their contracts will have to pay $200 to T-Mobile. But Google also charges users a $350 “equipment recovery fee” if you give up on the contract within 120 days. If you are planning to buy Nexus One, please be aware of these terms and conditions by Google and T-Mobile.
