3 Step To "Overcome" When You Tired and Depleted - Marshall Goldsmith

Do I see the themes from Triggers elsewhere in thought leadership?

Yes, I do. There’s a lot of exciting new research being done in the areas of goal-achievement and depletion and why we do and don't achieve our goals. As a matter of fact, Triggers is the product of about two years of thought and research I’ve done. To date, I’ve done 79 different studies with 2537 participants. The studies are ongoing and the pool of participants keeps growing! There’s been a lot of work behind Triggers – so it’s not something I just thought of in a day or two.

For instance, in the book, I talk about depletion and its effect on us in our daily lives. As you might know, one of this book’s central arguments is that our environment affects us in powerful, insidious, and mysterious ways. Depletion is one of those environmental hazards. Viewing depletion as an external trigger is a way of seeing the world anew and appreciating the demands placed on us by our constant efforts at self-regulation.

For example, say you wake up later than usual with insufficient time for your morning workout. You tell yourself you’ll hit the gym that evening after work. But at day’s end, carrying your briefcase and gym bag from the office, you think, “I can skip today. I’ll work out tomorrow morning.”

What’s going on here? Why do our discipline and decisiveness fade at the end of the day, to the point where we opt to do nothing instead of doing something enjoyable or useful? It’s not because we’re inherently weak. It’s because we’re weakened. By the end of the day, we’re worn down and vulnerable to foolish choices.

Depletion isn’t limited to self-control. It applies to many forms of self-regulated behavior. Most obviously it affects our decision making. The more decisions we’re obliged to make, whether it’s choosing among the dozens of options when buying a new car or reducing the list of attendees at an off-site meeting, the more fatigued we get in handling subsequent decisions. Researchers call this decision fatigue, a state that leaves us with two courses of action: 1) we make careless choices or 2) we surrender to the status quo and do nothing. Decision fatigue is why the head-scratching purchases we make on Tuesday get returned on Wednesday; we’re more clearheaded the next day when we’re not depleted. It’s also why we put off decisions; we’re too drained to decide now.

So, given that depletion is an external trigger that can lead us not to achieve our goal of becoming the person we want to be, what do we do? How do we combat this treacherous trigger?

Step 1: Track your day: Once your eyes are opened, new courses of action immediately come to mind. Most obviously, you can start tracking our days in terms of depletion.
Step 2: Assemble a list: We can’t measure or quantify our depletion—we’re not even aware of it—but you can assemble a useful list of what is or isn’t depleting.
Step 3: Structure your day: Structure is how we overcome depletion. In an almost magical way, structure slows down how fast our discipline and self-control disappear. When you have structure, you don’t have to make as many choices; you just follow the plan. And the net result is you’re not being depleted as quickly.

1- Từ có 2 âm tiết trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu

Tạo môi trường luyện nghe nói tiếng Anh cho bản thân

Vấn đề khó khăn nhất cho nguời học tiếng Anh đó là nỗi sợ hãi của chính họ khi học ngôn ngữ này. Họ lo âu họ sẽ không nói trúng giọng, hoặc văn phạm. Họ sợ nguời khác chê bai trình độ ngoại ngữ dở và do đó họ không nói tiếng Anh hoặc luyện nghe nói tiếng Anh truớc mọi người. Không nên làm điều này. Phương pháp luyện nghe nói tiếng Anh nhanh nhất đó là thực tập, nói và nói cho tới khi bạn nói trúng.

Sử dụng mọi tiếm năng

Nếu bạn đã theo học tại 1 trung tâm nào đó, không có nghĩa bạn không thể học tiếng Anh ngoài lớp. Sử dụng hết tất cả phương pháp, nguồn lực, công cụ mà bạn có thể có đuợc để luyện nghe nói tiếng Anh. Có nhiều cách để bạn có thể trau giồi khả năng Anh ngữ của mình, không nên giới hạn chỉ 1, hay vài phương pháp hoặc công cụ.

Bao quanh mình với Anh ngữ

Cách tốt nhất để học Anh ngữ là tiếp cận thật nhiều với nó. Chẳng hạn: ghi chú bằng tiếng Anh khi có thể, để nhiều sách tiếng Anh trong nhà, nghe các đài trên Radio bằng tiếng Anh, coi các đài bằng tiếng Anh trên TV, coi phim tiếng Anh ở các rạp hát. Nói tiếng Anh với bạn bè khi có thể. Càng tiếp cận với tiếng Anh hoặc các đề tài, thảo luận bằng tiếng Anh thì bạn càng dễ dàng tiến bộ trong tiếng Anh. Chẳng bao lâu bạn có thể tiến thêm buớc nữa đó là suy nghĩ bằng tiếng Anh. Tuy nhiên phải chắc rằng bạn không quên đi tiếng mẹ đẻ của mình nhé! ^^

Luyện nghe nói tiếng Anh với người nước ngoài

Có 1 số giáo viên Anh ngữ đã phải học tiếng Anh như 1 ngôn ngữ phụ (English As a Second Language) truớc khi họ có thể dạy nó cho nguời khác. Tuy nhiên, có nhiều lý do tại sao nhiều trung tâm Anh ngữ nổi tiếng thích chọn nguời Mỹ, Anh, Canada… dạy tiếng Anh. Một trong những lý do đó là nguời bản xứ có những lối nói, và âm giọng tự nhiên mà học trò của họ có thể bắt chuớc. Càng học hỏi đuợc ngữ điệu này của nguời bản xứ, học trò học tiếng Anh sẽ cảm thấy tự tin hơn trong cách nói tiếng Anh.

Coi phim tiếng Anh, nghe đài tiếng Anh

Đây không chỉ là cách học thích thú mà cón rất hữu hiệu. Coi phim tiếng Anh, đặc biệt các phim có phụ đề tiếng Anh, sẽ giúp các bạn mở rộng kiến thức về từ vựng, ngữ điệu, của diễn viên. Nếu lắng nghe tin tức trên đài các bạn cũng sẽ có dịp nghe đuợc các phát âm khác nhau nữa.

Lắng nghe âm nhạc bằng tiếng Anh

Âm nhạc, bài hát bằng tiếng Anh cũng là 1 phương pháp hữu hiệu trong việc học tiếng Anh. Sự thật nó còn là một phương pháp để trau giồi việc nghe và hiểu tiếng Anh (Listening Comprehensive). Viết lời tiếng Anh của bài hát xuống 1 trang giấy, sau đó lắng nghe tiếng hát của bài hát và sau đó đọc nó theo lối hát của nguời ca sĩ.

Làm bài thi tiếng Anh

Đa số cho rằng làm bài tập, và bài thi không thấy thích thú. Tuy nhiên, muốn trau giồi và tiến bộ trong Anh ngữ thì phải làm bài tập, và bài thi tốt. Như vậy bạn mới có thể đo luờng đuợc trình độ Anh ngữ của mình qua từng giai đoạn học.

Tự thu âm cách nói tiếng Anh của mình

Ít nguời nào thử nghe giọng nói của chính mình. Cũng giống như bài tập, bài thi, so sánh giọng nói của mình trong băng qua từng giai đoạn học tập là 1 cách đo luờng sự tiến bộ.

Lắng nghe tiếng Anh

Ý ở đây là bạn lắng nghe trên điện thoại, hoặc các đài phát thanh, băng dĩa bằng tiếng Anh. Phương pháp này khác với coi phim, hoặc TV bởi vì bạn sẽ không thấy nguời đọc hoặc nói tiếng Anh. Đã có nhiều học sinh Anh ngữ cho rằng nghe tiếng Anh trên điện thoại là 1 điều khó nhất mà họ đã từng thực tập để nghe giỏi tiếng Anh.

Cuối cùng, học tiếng Anh chú trọng việc thích thú, ham mê. Không nên quá ràng buộc mình trong việc học. Có thể coi nó như 1 hobby.

Để luyện nói tiếng Anh lưu loát và tự tin

Đó là câu hỏi mà nhiều người học tiếng Anh đang thắc mắc và tìm cách giải đáp. Bất cứ ai cũng muốn mình có thể nói được tiếng Anh lưu loát như tiếng mẹ đẻ nhưng có một sự thật mà bạn phải chấp nhận là dù bạn có giỏi tiếng anh đến mấy thì nó cũng chỉ là ngôn ngữ thứ hai của bạn mà thôi.Để nói được tiếng Anh lưu loát là một quá trình dài và đòi hỏi sự rèn luyện thường xuyên. Dưới đây là một vài quy tắc giúp bạn có thể luyện nói tiếng anh một cách lưu loát.

1. Đừng để ý quá nhiều đến ngữ pháp

Quy tắc này nghe có vẻ lạ đối với nhiều người. Đa số chúng ta khi học một ngôn ngữ thứ hai đều chú trọng đến ngữ pháp của nó nhiều hơn. Tuy nhiên, ngữ pháp chỉ giúp bạn vượt qua các kì thi viết ở trường.

Nếu bạn muốn nói tiếng Anh lưu loát thì hãy cố gắng bỏ qua những cấu trúc ngữ pháp phức tạp. Nếu bạn cứ mải suy nghĩ phải nói làm sao cho đúng ngữ pháp thì bạn sẽ mãi mãi mắc kẹt trong đó mà không thể nói tiếng anh khá lên được.

Thực tế thì người Anh hay người Mỹ khi nói đều không để ý đến cấu trúc ngữ pháp của câu nói. Đừng ngạc nhiên nếu như họ không biết một vài cấu trúc ngữ pháp mà bạn hỏi. Ngay cả bạn cũng đâu hiểu hết cấu trúc tiếng Việt đúng không?

2. Tìm hiểu và nghiên cứu những cụm từ

Muốn nói hay thì đương nhiên bạn phải có vốn từ vựng phong phú. Tuy nhiên, cũng giống như những đứa trẻ, khi học ngôn ngữ, bạn cần phải tìm hiểu đồng thời cả từ và cụm từ.

Một giáo sư dạy văn học Anh đã nói: nếu như bạn biết 1000 từ, bạn có thể nói được 1 câu đúng. Nhưng nếu bạn biết 1 cụm từ, bạn có thể tạo ra hàng trăm câu đúng. Nếu bạn biết 100 cụm từ, bạn sẽ ngạc nhiên với số lượng câu đúng mà bạn có thể nói và nếu bạn biết 1000 cụm từ, bạn hầu như đã là người nói tiếng anh thông thạo.

Vì vậy đừng bỏ thời gian chỉ để học hàng ngàn từ khác nhau, thay vào đó, hãy học những cụm từ, bạn sẽ dễ dàng để nói tiếng anh lưu loát.

Chú ý một đều quan trọng là đừng dịch từ tiếng mẹ đẻ của bạn để tạo ra một câu tiếng Anh. Việc tìm hiểu các cụm từ và câu giúp bạn không phải suy nghĩ về những gì định nói và giúp bạn nói một cách tự nhiên.

3. Nghe và Nói đồng thời

Quay ngược về tuổi thơ một chút, khi còn là một đứa trẻ, bạn chưa biết nói, bạn tiếp nhận mọi thứ xung quanh bằng cách lắng nghe, sau đó như một phản xạ tự nhiên, bạn nói lại những điều mà bạn nghe được và học được. Nói được trôi chảy, bạn mới học đọc và học viết. Vì vậy ngay từ khi bắt đầu, bạn nên học nghe, nói , đọc và cuối cùng là viết.

Tuy nhiên, vấn đề là khi học một ngôn ngữ thứ hai, bạn sẽ được học đọc trước, sau đó là viết, nghe và cuối cùng mới học nói. Và chính điều này cũng cản trở bạn trong việc nói tiếng anh.

Có nhiều người học tiếng anh chỉ luyện 2 kĩ năng đọc và nghe. Nhưng bạn muốn nói lưu loát thì đừng chỉ nghe không thôi, bạn cần phải nói những gì bạn đã nghe và luyện tập thường xuyên cho đến khi nào bạn có thể nói được mà không cần phải cố gắng suy nghĩ nhiều.

Làm được điều đó, bạn mới nói tiếng Anh một cách lưu loát được.

4. Sống trong ngôn ngữ mới

Nói vui thì có thể hiểu bạn cần phải nói tiếng Anh, ăn tiếng Anh, ngủ tiếng Anh. Việc bạn có nói tiếng anh được hay không không phụ thuộc vào trí thông minh của bạn mà phụ thuộc vào sự chăm chỉ. Nhiều người nói tiếng Anh tốt là do họ có được một môi trường mà tại đó họ có cơ hội nói tiếng Anh liên tục.

Bạn không cần đi đâu xa để nói tiếng Anh thành thạo. Chỉ cần xây dựng một môi trường để bạn thực hành tiếng Anh thường xuyên. Ví dụ tham gia các lớp học tiếng Anh, các CLB, hay mang theo 1 MP3 để liên tục nghe các câu tiếng Anh. Nếu như bạn quá nhàm chán bởi các bài nói thông thường thì bạn có thể xem phim tiếng Anh, nghe nhạc hay đọc những mẩu chuyện bằng tiếng Anh… Điều này sẽ giúp bạn học được ngữ điệu và cách dùng từ của những người nước ngoài một cách nhanh chóng.

5. Học đúng tài liệu

Tuy nhiên, cái gì cũng có tính 2 mặt của nó. Thực hành nhiều chưa hẳn đã tốt và còn phản tác dụng nếu như bạn thực hành không đúng phương pháp và không đúng tài liệu. Thử nghĩ xem nếu bạn thực hành những câu không chính xác thì hậu quả của nó sẽ như thế nào?

Học tiếng Anh với một người không phải người bản địa có ưu điểm và cũng có nhược điểm. Với những người bạn của mình thì bạn có nhiều cơ hội luyện tập hơn,các bạn có thể thúc đẩy lẫn nhau và chỉ ra những lỗi sai cơ bản cho nhau. Tuy nhiên bạn có thể bị nhiễm những lỗi sai từ người kia vì cả 2 đều không biết chính xác đâu là câu đúng. Vì vậy, nếu như thực hành với bạn bè không phải người bản xứ, hãy sử dụng khoảng thời gian này để luyện tập lại những gì chính xác bạn đã học chứ đừng tìm cách sáng tạo nên những từ mới

6. Luyện nói với người nước ngoài

Để khắc phục nhược điểm khi luyện tập với người Việt Nam, bạn cần tạo điều kiện để bản thân có cơ hội nói chuyện với người nước ngoài. Khi đó bạn mới học được những từ và cụm từ mới, ngữ điệu, các thành ngữ thường được sử dụng mà không sợ sai.

Nói chuyện với người nước ngoài còn giúp bạn tự tin hơn trong giao tiếp tiếng Anh. Bắt đầu bằng một khóa học mới với các giáo viên hoàn toàn là người nước ngoài là cách để bạn có được môi trường giao tiếp và luyện nói tiếng Anh hoàn hảo.

The Little Match Girl

It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was almost dark. Evening came on, the last evening of the year. In the cold and gloom a poor little girl, bareheaded and barefoot, was walking through the streets. Of course when she had left her house she'd had slippers on, but what good had they been? They were very big slippers, way too big for her, for they belonged to her mother. The little girl had lost them running across the road, where two carriages had rattled by terribly fast. One slipper she'd not been able to find again, and a boy had run off with the other, saying he could use it very well as a cradle some day when he had children of his own. And so the little girl walked on her naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried several packages of matches, and she held a box of them in her hand. No one had bought any from her all day long, and no one had given her a cent.

Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along, a picture of misery, poor little girl! The snowflakes fell on her long fair hair, which hung in pretty curls over her neck. In all the windows lights were shining, and there was a wonderful smell of roast goose, for it was New Year's eve. Yes, she thought of that!

In a corner formed by two houses, one of which projected farther out into the street than the other, she sat down and drew up her little feet under her. She was getting colder and colder, but did not dare to go home, for she had sold no matches, nor earned a single cent, and her father would surely beat her. Besides, it was cold at home, for they had nothing over them but a roof through which the wind whistled even though the biggest cracks had been stuffed with straw and rags.

Her hands were almost dead with cold. Oh, how much one little match might warm her! If she could only take one from the box and rub it against the wall and warm her hands. She drew one out. R-r-ratch! How it sputtered and burned! It made a warm, bright flame, like a little candle, as she held her hands over it; but it gave a strange light! It really seemed to the little girl as if she were sitting before a great iron stove with shining brass knobs and a brass cover. How wonderfully the fire burned! How comfortable it was! The youngster stretched out her feet to warm them too; then the little flame went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the burnt match in her hand.

She struck another match against the wall. It burned brightly, and when the light fell upon the wall it became transparent like a thin veil, and she could see through it into a room. On the table a snow-white cloth was spread, and on it stood a shining dinner service. The roast goose steamed gloriously, stuffed with apples and prunes. And what was still better, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled along the floor with a knife and fork in its breast, right over to the little girl. Then the match went out, and she could see only the thick, cold wall. She lighted another match. Then she was sitting under the most beautiful Christmas tree. It was much larger and much more beautiful than the one she had seen last Christmas through the glass door at the rich merchant's home. Thousands of candles burned on the green branches, and colored pictures like those in the printshops looked down at her. The little girl reached both her hands toward them. Then the match went out. But the Christmas lights mounted higher. She saw them now as bright stars in the sky. One of them fell down, forming a long line of fire.

"Now someone is dying," thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only person who had loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star fell down a soul went up to God.

She rubbed another match against the wall. It became bright again, and in the glow the old grandmother stood clear and shining, kind and lovely.

"Grandmother!" cried the child. "Oh, take me with you! I know you will disappear when the match is burned out. You will vanish like the warm stove, the wonderful roast goose and the beautiful big Christmas tree!"

And she quickly struck the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother with her. And the matches burned with such a glow that it became brighter than daylight. Grandmother had never been so grand and beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and both of them flew in brightness and joy above the earth, very, very high, and up there was neither cold, nor hunger, nor fear-they were with God.

But in the corner, leaning against the wall, sat the little girl with red cheeks and smiling mouth, frozen to death on the last evening of the old year. The New Year's sun rose upon a little pathetic figure. The child sat there, stiff and cold, holding the matches, of which one bundle was almost burned.

"She wanted to warm herself," the people said. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, and how happily she had gone with her old grandmother into the bright New Year.
