Bill Hader voices the iconic character, bringing a mischievous edge to the Cat as he embarks on a mission from the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, LLC. His assignment centers on cheering up two siblings, Gabby and Sebastian, who are struggling after moving to a new town, per the synopsis.

The trailer shows the Cat using his signature blend of magic and mayhem to pull the children into a surreal world filled with imagination-driven chaos. As the story unfolds, his tendency to push boundaries puts his mission at risk, with consequences that could cost him his magical hat.

Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni direct the film from their own screenplay, based on a story by Caroline Williams. Daniela Mazzucato produces the project for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.

The voice cast features Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, and Paula Pell, along with Tiago Martinez, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang, and Tituss Burgess.

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation brings the film to theaters and IMAX across North America on November 6, 2026. The international rollout begins on November 4, with Warner Bros. handling global distribution.

*“An action-packed, emotional, and funny masterpiece,” were my thoughts after leaving the AMC theatre screening the Lionsgate release of The Furious starring martial arts actor Xie Miao (Mo Tse) – in AMC theatres June 12, 2026.

The Furious, a Edko Films, Zhejiang Hengdian Film, XYZ Films production, is directed by action film director Kenji Tanigaki and produced by Bill Kong, Shan Tam, and Frank Hui. Mak Tin Shu, Lei Zhilong Sin, and Frank Hui wrote the script. The Furious follows Wang Wei (Xie Miao), a retired deaf martial arts fighter working as a quiet and unassuming tradesman, whose daughter Rainey, played by 13-year-old Enyou Yang, is kidnapped by a major network of human traffickers. It seems the traffickers are tied to the police chief.

Even before the action starts, as Wang looks for his daughter, The Furious begins with action when a journalist disappears. The journalist had evidence against the child traffickers, and now she is gone, and her husband, Navin, played by Joe Taslim, is looking desperately for her. He was close to buying the kidnapped children as an infiltrated trafficker secretly looking for his wife, when Wang Wei shows up ready to beat down everyone to find his daughter.

When the two join forces to find Wang’s daughter and Navin’s wife that is the heart of The Furious R-Rated film – action-packed, emotional and funny. Along with the audience I was cheering them on during the fights, wiping away tears at the ugliness of human trafficking and then laughing at the film’s many “comic relief” moments that are really needed! Offering all those things to the audience is masterful and done in a way that at the end of the film everyone is applauding.

The Furious also stars Orange County, California Vietnamese martial arts expert Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga, Sahajak Boonthanakit, Manatsanum Phanlerdwongsakul, Guo Junqing, Winai Wiangyangkung, with a special appearance by Indonesian martial arts artist Yayan Ruhian (Star Wars: The Force Awaken) who plays the trafficking network’s enforcer and Jija Yanin.

Xie Miao, a Beijing native, started out starring next to martial arts legend Jet Li in The Legend of Shaolin and then again in My Father the Hero. In The Furious, Xie shows that he has been busy building his own legacy as a martial arts star – and he’s explosive so watch out for him. www.AMCTheatres.com .

*The HISTORY Channel will premiere a new documentary special centered on American design and national symbolism this July.

The network will air “Ralph Lauren’s American Icons” on Saturday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. The special forms part of the HISTORY Honors 250 campaign, which marks the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The 30-minute film examines designer Ralph Lauren and his role in curating a collection of 13 United States Postal Service stamps. The project highlights iconic American imagery and marks the first time the USPS has invited an individual to oversee an official stamp issuance.

According to the press release, the documentary uses interviews, archival material, and historical commentary to explore how Lauren helped shape a visual interpretation of the American Dream. His son, David Lauren, appears in the film alongside never-before-seen family archives.

The stamp collection features a range of national symbols, including the American flag, the Empire State Building, Jackie Robinson’s baseball glove, a Navajo blanket, and a red pickup truck. The project emphasizes themes tied to American identity, including freedom, resilience, independence, equality, and opportunity.

The special also includes commentary from filmmaker Ken Burns, historian Yohuru Williams, and Smithsonian National Museum of American History director Anthea M. Hartig. Each provides context on the cultural significance of the imagery and the broader American story.

Viewers will also see rare access inside the Smithsonian preservation chamber that houses the original Star-Spangled Banner. Lauren helped support its restoration through a $13 million donation. The documentary also features footage from the USPS “First Day of Issue” ceremony in New York, where the stamp collection was officially unveiled.

The program is part of HISTORY Honors 250, a multi-year initiative leading up to the United States semiquincentennial in 2026. The campaign includes programming, digital content, and events focused on American history and milestones.

*STARZ turned the premiere of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5 into a full-scale farewell celebration at The Times Center in NYC. The event brought together the cast, creators, network executives, and franchise alumni for what quickly felt less like a routine launch and more like a sendoff for one of the most influential chapters in the Power universe.

The carpet featured Patina Miller, Mekai Curtis, London Brown, Malcolm Mays, Joey Bada$$, Hailey Kilgore, Shameik Moore, Tony Danza, Wendell Pierce, Erika Woods, Leslie Grossman and Joe Pantoliano. Creator, executive producer and showrunner Sascha Penn and executive producer Mark Canton attended alongside STARZ leadership including Jeffrey Hirsch, Alison Hoffman and Kathryn Busby.

Power: Origins cast members Spence Moore and Charlie Mann pulled up, a symbolic reminder that while Raising Kanan is ending, the franchise is preparing its next beginning.

The premiere set the tone: this season is a reckoning.

Kathryn Busby told the crowd that the final season is “a reckoning—for every character, every choice, and every consequence,” calling the storytelling “a suspenseful whirlwind of emotion” packed with the kind of twists that keep audiences coming back.

Penn followed by thanking STARZ for allowing the series to end on its own terms, then singled out Mekai Curtis for praise. “He didn’t just fill his shoes, he made them his own,” Penn said, referring to the challenge of portraying the younger version of Kanan Stark.

Is Lou’s Time Up?

For all the talk of twists, the most immediate question hanging over Season 5 is whether viewers are about to lose Lou-Lou Thomas, one of the show’s most beloved characters.

When Radio/TV personality Jazmyn Summers caught up with Malcolm Mays for EURweb on the carpet, the actor sounded strikingly calm about the possibility.

“It’s only goodbye to the character, but not to me.”

Asked how it felt to potentially close the chapter on Lou after years in the role, Mays replied:

“I’m at peace with it. We did everything we were supposed to do with that character and everything we were supposed to do with this series. I can’t be mad at something that feels complete.”

Those comments land heavily because the premiere episode reportedly left the audience gasping at multiple reveals before ending to a roaring round of applause.

No One Is Safe

Penn won’t confirm any deaths, but he offered little reassurance.

“I think there will be a lot of twists and turns. There will be some wins and losses and there will be some stuff that I think will be tough for some of the fans to handle.”

He also delivered a warning familiar to longtime Power viewers:

“No one is ever truly safe.”

According to Penn, the final season was built as a “high stakes volatile conclusion” that resolves lingering questions.

“We leave no question unanswered.”

Kanan vs. Raq Reaches a Breaking Point

At the center of the final season is the increasingly explosive relationship between Kanan Stark and his mother, Raq.

What began as a complicated bond built on loyalty, protection and manipulation has evolved into a fight for independence, power and control.

Mekai Curtis framed the conflict not as a lack of love, but as a failure to hear each other.

“Sometimes they’re going to get the ugliest parts of you.”

“With how much Kanan and Raq are trying to show that they love each other, they’re not listening to one another.”

Curtis said Kanan is trying to force his mother to recognize him as an adult making his own choices.

“Whether they’re decisions that you and I like or not, this is what I’m deciding to do as a grown man.”

Penn sees deeper flaws driving the rupture.

“She has a tough time differentiating between her son and herself.”

“She doesn’t know where she begins and he ends.”

“I think there’s a decent amount of narcissism there as well. And I think she has trouble with empathy.”

Enter Breeze

For years, fans have waited for Breeze. Now Shameik Moore steps into one of the franchise’s most mythologized roles.

Moore said he approached the part by studying the broader Power universe.

“We know that Tommy, Kanan and Ghost learned from Breeze. All of their characters have to be seen in mind.”

He acknowledged that some fans expected a physically imposing kingpin, but said this version of Breeze is built on charisma, hunger and unpredictability.

“Breeze got to be a force to be reckoned with.”

Curtis described Kanan’s attraction to Breeze’s style in equally dangerous terms.

“I think he’s a bull in a china shop. And Kanan realizes that and that’s what he gravitates towards.”

The partnership may be profitable, but it is not built on trust.

“He doesn’t trust him fully. He knows Breeze doesn’t trust him fully, but they’re going to work together.”

Marvin Is Done Playing Nice

If there is one character who appears ready to explode, it’s Marvin Thomas.

London Brown teased a darker, more dangerous Marvin in Season 5.

Asked about a trailer moment in which Raq warns Marvin that there may be no turning back, Brown explained:

“Marvin doesn’t care. He’s out for revenge.”

He described Marvin’s mindset in blunt terms:

“Marvin is just at a place where he’s not tolerating any disrespect.”

“Now he’s holding people accountable.”

Brown also revealed that he styled himself for the premiere, joking that he was ready to add “stylist” to his multi-hyphenate résumé of actor, comedian, dancer and impressionist.

Pop, Snaps and a Deadly Family Business

Meanwhile, the OG gangster couple Pop and Snaps are expanding their empire and bringing Breeze into the fold.

Erika Woods hinted that Pop becomes even more dangerous this season.

“As you know, Pop is not afraid to get her hands dirty.”

She also teased escalating warfare among rival families fighting for control of South Jamaica, Queens.

“There are so many people and different families and different individuals all trying to get the biggest piece of the pie.”

Moore added one of the premiere night’s most ominous warnings:

“You might get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and end up dead.”

Unique Gets Wilder

Fans hoping for a calmer, more reflective Unique should recalibrate.

Joey Bada$$ promised exactly the opposite.

“One of the beautiful things about Unique’s character is that unpredictability.”

“He gets even wilder.”

He kept plot specifics locked down, but described the evolving relationship between Unique and Raq as an “interesting love story,” a phrase that should make longtime viewers immediately suspicious.

From TV’s Favorite Nice Guy to One of Power’s Most Dangerous Men

Few transformations in television are as striking as Tony Danza’s evolution into Stefano Marchetti.

For decades, audiences knew Danza as the lovable star of Taxi and Who’s the Boss?, the kind of charismatic everyman viewers rooted for week after week.

In Raising Kanan, however, Danza has embraced a dramatically different role as Stefano, the calculating mob boss whose influence stretches across New York’s criminal underworld.

When Summers asked where the gangster came from, Danza pointed to both his upbringing and the show’s writing.

“Well, I’m a kid from Brooklyn.”

He quickly added, “It’s the writing. They give you such good stuff to say.”

This season, Stefano’s relationship with Raq appears to become even more dangerous. What once carried hints of flirtation and mutual admiration now looks increasingly like a collision course.

“I think he had a thing for her,” Danza admitted.

When asked whether there could still be feelings beneath the hostility, he teased fans with a simple response:

“Maybe.”

Whether romance survives beneath the rivalry remains to be seen, but Stefano and Raq seem headed toward conflict rather than reconciliation.

Danza also hinted that fans should brace themselves for jaw-dropping developments.

“Every time we had a reading, every episode, everybody would get their scripts and you’d hear, ‘What? Oh my God. What are you kidding?'”

For a cast that has spent years navigating murders, betrayals and power struggles, that’s saying something.

The Cast Gets Personal

Between the warnings about betrayals and bloodshed, Summers also got a handful of surprisingly candid personal moments from the cast.

Mays said ladies are welcome to slide into his DMs, though “I can’t guarantee a response,” adding that he is focused on settling down with someone special. He wouldn’t say who or when but said “there will be signs soon.” His self-described bad habit? “Caring too much.” His biggest pet peeve? “Ignorance. Of all shapes and kinds whether it’s in the highest office or the lowest.”

Moore admitted his own bad habit is “talking too much” and confirmed that Spider-Verse remains on his horizon.

Joey Bada$$ confessed that his worst habit is staying up too late even when he knows he has responsibilities the next morning. His pet peeve? “Customer service calls.”

Curtis offered perhaps the most revealing glimpse into who he is beyond Kanan when discussing the Black power and love artwork hanging behind him during the interview,

“It’s a reminder of just all the things that you do this for.”

He said the piece reminds him daily to maintain balance between “soul, mind, body.”

One Last Ride

After the screening, the celebration moved to BOOM at The Standard, where guests toasted the season with themed cocktails, danced to a DJ set by Errol Chatham, reflected on the series’ legacy and cheered on the New York Knicks during Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

The after-party had the energy of a victory lap, but the mood of the interviews pointed somewhere darker: the final season is coming for everyone, and even the people who made it aren’t pretending otherwise.

Tony Danza captured that feeling best.

“Every time we had a reading, every episode, everybody would get their scripts and you’d hear, ‘What? Oh my God. What are you kidding?’”

If the cast reacted that way while making it, viewers may want to keep the popcorn warm.

As Curtis warned:

“Season five is full of a bunch of twists and turns and surprises that nobody’s ready for.”

Power Book III: Raising Kanan returns June 12 on STARZ for its fifth and final season.

This season, Snoopy leads the Beagle Scouts through a series of adventures that include hiking trails, swimming, and outdoor games. The characters also search for a mysterious hedge toad while competing in playful debates, such as the merits of hot dogs versus hamburgers, according to the news release.

Apple TV continues to expand its Peanuts lineup through a long-term partnership with Peanuts Worldwide, WildBrain, and Lee Mendelson Film Productions. The collaboration extends through 2030, with the streamer as the exclusive home for Peanuts content.

The series draws directly from the original comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz. Rob Boutilier directs the animated project, while executive producers include Paige Braddock, Chris Bracco, Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts, Logan McPherson, and Boutilier.

Alongside the new season, Apple TV continues developing additional Peanuts projects. A new animated feature film titled “Snoopy Unleashed” follows Snoopy after he runs away from home, prompting Charlie Brown and friends to search for him in a big city.

*A Georgia family is speaking out after what they describe as a violent attack during a reunion in Lee County, Georgia. Authorities say the incident on June 7 left one man injured and triggered an ongoing investigation, WAFB 9 reports.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to reports of a shooting in progress on Autumn Leaf Drive. Authorities identified Jeffrey Tyler Kinzer as the suspect in the case. According to family members, Kinzer first drove past the reunion and shouted racial slurs at relatives gathered in the front yard. Witnesses say he returned a short time later wearing body armor and carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

Family members say panic spread once people realized the situation had turned dangerous. People at the reunion scattered for cover as gunfire erupted. A witness said he returned fire to defend relatives at the property, where multiple children were present.

“We were having a family gathering. And it was a great family gathering,” he said. “It was peaceful…He came and caused that to happen. And he found out that he’s not the only one who has training.”

Another witness added, “It’s so hurtful. I cried all night. I’m lying outside on the ground for a shootout. I’m under a car with my sister, who is 77, and I’m 62.”

A family member shot Kinzer during the exchange of gunfire. After doctors treated his injuries at the local hospital, authorities transported him to the Lee County Jail. Officials charged him with aggravated assault. Additional charges remain under review as investigators continue to gather evidence.

Family members believe the attack was racially motivated. They are calling for stronger charges as the case moves forward.

*Rick Ross is addressing a viral photo that showed him traveling through a commercial airport instead of flying private. The image spread quickly online and triggered widespread discussion about the rapper’s travel style.

The photo showed Ross sitting inside an airport terminal, and social media users pointed out that no private jet or hangar appeared in the image. Ross responded on Instagram Story and explained that his jet is currently undergoing upgrades.

“For the ones who wanna know where my jet at, I obviously didn’t get the memo,” Ross said. “It’s being updated with Starlink. You know what Starlink is? Yeah, that’s the half-a-million-dollar Wi-Fi.”

He said the upgrade includes Starlink internet service and noted that the situation led him to fly commercial instead. “I chose to fly commercial to Colombia to go party with Trick Daddy,” he said

Media personalities also reacted to the viral moment on air. Ebro Darden and Peter Rosenberg discussed the photo and joked about the contrast between Ross’s “Biggest Boss” persona.

The viral moment comes as Ross continues his music rollout. He recently announced a new album titled “Set in Stone,” set for release on July 17 through Gamma. The project marks his first album in five years.

Ross is also currently touring on his “Port of Miami 20th Anniversary Black-Tie Experience Orchestra Tour.” The North American run continues with a stop in Atlanta on June 12.

*Teyana Taylor is setting the tone for Essence Fest 2026 with a clear message. She wants the festival to reconnect with the energy longtime attendees remember while still growing its reach.

Taylor spoke at a press conference in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome to discuss her plans as chief curator of the festival. She said her approach is not about changing the event’s identity. Instead, she wants to build on what already exists.

“We didn’t come here to change nothing,” Taylor said, NOLA.com reports. “We’re coming here to elevate and add.”

Essence tapped Taylor as chief curator of the 2026 Essence Festival of Culture. The role gives her influence over programming and creative direction for the event. Organizers say her vision will highlight Black culture, feminine empowerment, and storytelling.

The festival will run from July 3–5 in New Orleans. Events will take place at the Caesars Superdome and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Taylor previously performed at Essence Fest in 2019. She described the festival as a space that functions like a cultural reunion.

“ESSENCE has always been more than a festival, it is a reunion,” she said in a statement. She added that the event reflects Black women in their joy, creativity, and identity.

For 2026, Taylor said she wants the experience to feel familiar again for longtime attendees.

“When something first starts up, it’s a different kind of energy,” she said. “That’s what I want it to feel like. I want it to feel like how it used to feel. I want it to feel like home again.”

She also hinted at new additions, including updated design elements, expanded convention center programming, an R&B lounge, culinary experiences, and dedicated spaces for authors and creatives.

The 2026 lineup already includes Cardi B, Patti LaBelle, Brandy, Monica, Kehlani, Latto, Babyface, Public Enemy, George Clinton & Friends, Doug E. Fresh, Leon Thomas,Josh Levi and Michelle Obama is also scheduled to appear.

Taylor said attendees invest heavily to attend Essence Fest and emphasized the importance of delivering a full experience.

“I don’t take this opportunity for granted,” she said. “We’re going to continue to grow.”

*Charles Barkley leaned into controversy on Wednesday, turning criticism of his NBA Finals comments into jokes about his future in broadcasting at ESPN.

He appeared on Fox Sports Radio and addressed his recent remarks about Cardi B’s halftime performance during Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. Barkley framed the situation as something he does not take too seriously.

“I’m hoping they fire me,” Barkley said, Fox News reports. He added, “I got six or seven years left on my contract that they know I got no chance of doing. I would love for them to fire me and have to pay me for the next six or seven years.”

Barkley’s comments follow his hilarious reaction to Cardi B’s breasts in an ESPN segment that quickly went viral. “I don’t know if those are B’s. They might be Cardi D’s,” he said. “I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s. She’s got the wrong initials.”

He revisited the topic during the radio interview and dismissed the idea that he needs to adjust his approach for critics.

“I would love to get fired, I’m not gonna lie. Because there’s zero chance I’m gonna be working the next six or seven years, zero,” Barkley said.

*Federal prosecutors have expanded their case against rapper Lil Durk and his co-defendants with a superseding indictment that adds a racketeering murder charge and new federal allegations, LA Magazine reports.

A grand jury returned the updated indictment on June 3. It includes Murder in Aid of Racketeering and Conspiracy to Commit Stalking. Prosecutors say the additions strengthen their case ahead of trial.

The filing also revises a firearms charge. Prosecutors now link it more directly to the racketeering murder allegation. They made the change after a recent Supreme Court ruling affecting how courts interpret related charges.

Prosecutors also said the revised structure undercuts a defense motion to dismiss the firearms count. They argue the updated indictment ties the gun charge to the broader racketeering case.

Authorities previously told defense lawyers they intended to add allegations from other incidents. Those include a Chicago homicide and an Atlanta shooting. Court documents list alleged victims only as “S.M.” and “A.W.”

The expanded indictment indicates that jurors may hear evidence about events beyond the August 2022 shooting in Los Angeles, which sits at the center of this case. Prosecutors say the shooting killed Saviay’a Robinson, known as Lul Pab. The case focuses on allegations that Durk took part in a murder-for-hire plot targeting rapper Quando Rondo. Prosecutors claim the group formed the plan to retaliate for the 2020 killing of rapper King Von, a close friend of Durk.

According to investigators, the attack targeted Quando Rondo outside a Los Angeles-area gas station. Rondo survived the shooting, but Robinson died at the scene. Prosecutors say Robinson was not the intended target.

Authorities also allege members of the Chicago-based collective Only The Family helped coordinate the attack. They claim the group managed travel and logistics across state lines as part of the alleged scheme.

Durk has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys say he did not finance, direct, or participate in any violence. They also call the indictment an attempt to strengthen a weak case before trial.

The trial is scheduled to begin on August 20, 2026.

*Netflix is rolling out a new way for shared accounts to function. Each profile can now connect to its own email address, Cord Cutters reports.

Until now, all profiles under a single Netflix account have relied on the same login email associated with the account holder. That setup often meant one person handled verification messages and sign-in access for everyone in the household. With the update, users link each profile to a separate email address. After that, they can sign in independently and receive login verification codes directly.

The update also separates account management at the profile level. Viewers can adjust individual preferences without altering other profiles on the same subscription. That gives households more control over how each person experiences the service.

Personalization remains a key part of the platform. Netflix says recommendations will continue to reflect each profile’s viewing history, keeping suggestions personalized. The feature is available through the Profile Settings menu, and Netflix is also guiding users through prompts sent in notification emails. Account holders can initiate setup directly from those messages, making the change accessible without navigating deep into settings.

The update arrives after Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing in 2023.

*Ted Danson says an apology he owes Whoopi Goldberg has no expiration date. More than 30 years after a blackface routine at her Friars Club roast, the actor revisited the moment on W. Kamau Bell’s podcast “Who’s With Me?“.

Looking back, Danson does not defend the choices his younger self made. He called the decision to perform in blackface “arrogant and stupid,” even as he tried to explain what led him there.

“That this white guy could have something valuable to say about race and relations was so stupid and entitled,” Danson said, TheWrap reports. “I thought, I can be Robin Williams. I can pull this off. I know it’s bold, but I can pull this off, and that was so arrogant and stupid on my part.”

According to Danson, the routine took shape over several months as he searched for an angle to roast “one of the most outrageous, funny Black women in the world”. As an actor rather than a stand-up comic, he felt out of his depth from the start. “I’m not a standup,” he said. “I can’t run with the bulls.”

“If the material’s funny, I can be funny,” Danson added. “So I was like, ‘Ugh, what am I going to do?’ and then I thought, Well, I can do performance theater. So I’ll do performance theater.”

The roast itself almost did not happen. Danson said he and Goldberg, whose relationship was ending around that time, tried to withdraw from the Friars Club event. The club refused, citing ticket sales already in motion. “They had sold so many tickets,” Danson recalled.

“I know what was in my heart, so I have no problem talking about this, but I need to and want to apologize for the rest of my life,” Danson said.

*A probate filing has shed new light on the personal finances of veteran music executive John McClain, revealing an estate valued at more than $20 million and raising questions about its administration after his death.

Warner Wright IV has petitioned the court to appoint him and attorney Zia F. Modabber as co-administrators of McClain’s estate, TMZ reports. Wright identified himself as McClain’s first cousin once removed and said he considered the music executive his uncle while growing up.

According to the filing, several matters require immediate attention. Wright cited an upcoming lease payment for a Malibu property, unpaid bills, maintenance concerns, creative projects requiring preservation and other time-sensitive responsibilities. He said he and attorney Zia F. Modabber need access to McClain’s bank accounts to manage those matters.

The court documents estimate the value of McClain’s probate assets at $20,033,862. Wright’s filing further claims that McClain died without leaving a will.

The development stands out because McClain spent years helping oversee the estate of Michael Jackson. Alongside attorney John Branca, he served as co-executor under the singer’s 2002 will.

McClain’s connection to Jackson extended well beyond business. The two were longtime friends, a relationship that eventually led to McClain taking on a central role in managing the singer’s affairs after his death in 2009. At the time, Jackson’s estate reportedly faced severe financial challenges, including hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. Under the leadership of McClain and Branca, the estate later generated billions of dollars through entertainment, licensing, and media-related ventures.

McClain died at age 71 in Malibu. TMZ previously reported that he spent a week in the hospital after suffering a fall at home that resulted in a broken arm. Sources told the outlet that he later died from complications linked to the incident. Separate sources also told TMZ that McClain had been dealing with an illness for several years.

*Jeffrey Metcalf, the father of slain Texas teen Austin Metcalf, is facing backlash after referring to convicted killer Karmelo Anthony as a “watermelon felon” during a lengthy video in which he also lashed out at Anthony’s family, supporters and critics.

The remarks came after Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a 2025 high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Because “watermelon” has long been used as an anti-Black racial stereotype, critics quickly condemned the comments as racist, reigniting tensions surrounding a case that has been deeply polarized along racial lines.

In the video, Metcalf began by recounting the devastating moment he learned Austin had been stabbed. He said he rushed to the stadium after receiving a call and knew when he saw his son that “he was gone.”

The Video Takes A Sharp Turn

Much of the video focused on Austin’s life, faith, grief and legacy. Metcalf spoke about his son’s leadership, athletic talent, scholarship fund and the pain of burying a child.

But later in the video, his tone shifted from mourning to anger as he addressed people he said had mocked, attacked or politicized his son’s death.

“The muzzle’s off,” Metcalf said, referring to a gag order that he said had kept him from responding publicly.

Metcalf accused Anthony’s parents of abandoning their son and called them “grifters.” He also attacked members of Anthony’s support system, including a “convicted felon” advocate, and said Anthony’s family tried to “play victim.”

“The real victim is the one who died, not the one who shoved a knife in his chest,” Metcalf said.

He then accused Anthony’s side of widening what he called an “unbelievable racial divide.”

“I come to pray with you and show the world we can close the gap of this unbelievable racial divide,” he said. “And what you do, you widen the gap even further.”

‘Watermelon Felon’ Remark Draws Backlash

The most explosive portion of the video came when Metcalf turned directly to race.

“From day one, I said this was never about race,” he said. “Please don’t make it about race and don’t politicize it. And what did you do? You chose both.”

He then said, “The race card, Black fatigue. It’s real. I’m sorry.”

Metcalf continued, “You have embarrassed your own culture and race,” before adding, “Don’t blame the white person ’cause we can’t change it. But you’re going to blame the white person for every [expletive] thing else.”

At another point, he said, “We’re the bad ones. We’re the one that held you down. Guess what? You can do everything in America that I can do.”

The clip that drew the strongest reaction came later, when Metcalf said he would “make something racist up” and then referred to Anthony as “watermelon felon.”

“How about watermelon felon? How’s that one strike you?” he said.

The phrase immediately sparked condemnation because “watermelon” has long been used as an anti-Black racist stereotype in the United States. Critics online described the comments as racist and said the video undermined Metcalf’s repeated claim that the case “was never about race.”

A Case Already Consumed By Race

Anthony’s conviction followed a trial that was already under a national microscope. He admitted stabbing Austin but claimed self-defense. Prosecutors argued the stabbing was murder, and the jury agreed.

The racial dynamics of the case were central to the public debate even before Metcalf’s video. Anthony’s supporters argued that the Black teenager was treated unfairly and that his self-defense claim was dismissed in a racially biased atmosphere. Metcalf’s supporters argued the case was about accountability for Austin’s death, not race.

Metcalf’s video has now pushed the case even deeper into that debate.

Grief, Anger And Consequences

Metcalf repeatedly said in the video that he forgave Anthony because holding on to hatred would destroy him.

“I forgave him so I don’t carry the hate and the anger,” he said.

But he also admitted that without forgiveness, “I would have wound up killing him and going to prison myself.”

That tension — between grief, faith, anger and racial resentment — is what has made the video so volatile.

The video leaves little doubt that Metcalf is still grieving deeply. It also leaves little doubt that his words have added another painful chapter to a case already defined by tragedy, rage and race.
