Plot / Synopsis:

A film composed of images from prisons. Quotes from fiction films and documentaries as well as footage from surveillance cameras. A look at the new control technologies, at personal identification devices, electronic ankle bracelets, electronic tracking devices. The cinema has always been attracted to prisons. Today's prisons are full of video surveillance cameras. These images are unedited and monotonous; as neither time nor space is compressed, they are particularly well-suited to conveying the state of inactivity into which prisoners are placed as a punitive measure. The surveillance cameras show the norm and reckon with deviations from it. Clips from films by Genet and Bresson. Here the prison appears as a site of sexual infraction, a site where human beings must create themselves as people and as a workers. In Un Chant d'amour by Jean Genet, the guard looks in on inmates in their cells and sees them masturbating. The inmates are aware that they are being watched and thus become performers in a peep show. The protagonist in Bresson's Un Condamné à mort s'est échappé turns the objects of imprisonment into the tools of his escape. These topoi appear in many prison films. In newer prisons, in contrast, contemporary video surveillance technology aims at demystification.

Plot / Synopsis:

Marcello Mastroianni as Enrico, a struggling journalist in the Rome of 1945. He receives a phone call informing him that his younger brother Lorenzo (Jacques Perrin) has died. Enrico recalls their long and difficult relationship; he was brought up by their poor but warm-hearted grandmother (Sylvie), Lorenzo was raised as a gentleman by a wealthy local aristocrat. Review:

One of the most awe-inspiringly composed and photographed color films of all time. You've never seen Mastroianni, until you've seen him in this film, walking around like an iconic black ghost in the darkly hued existentialist-to-the-nth-degree technicolor universe of post-war Italy created by Zurlini and legendary DP Giussepe Rottuno. What a stroke of genius to contrast the bleakest and most depressing of subjects possible with the most fantastically poetic and gorgeous technicolor cinematography this side of `Black Narcissus.' This is one of Rottuno's finest works ever: full of absolutely breathtaking deeper than deep blacks and colors that seem to have sprouted from some otherworldly weathered, neo-realist hallucination. And what timeless subtly paced, unerringly poetic, intelligent and completely uncompromising direction by Zurlini, the forgotten genius of Italian cinema, whose style in this film can be roughly described as a unique melange of neo-realism, Antonioni, Michael Powell, Jacques Becker, early Pasolini and early Bertolucci. It's easy to imagine how easily this story of a tubercular writer grieving the death of his younger brother through a series of flashbacks could've turned into not much more than a melodramatic tearjerker; yet in Zurlini's hands and through the incredible, tour-de-force performance of Marcello Mastroiani in the lead role, the Marxist-proleteriat-plight-of-the-poor sentimentality at the film's core transcends itself and becomes a deeply affecting, painful and ultimately cathartic meditation on death, despair, and the possibilities of redemption in the direst of circumstances.

Plot / Synopsis:

A historical view of witchcraft in seven parts and a variety of styles. First, there is a slide-show alternating inter-titles with drawings and paintings to illustrate the behavior of pagan cultures in the Middle Ages regarding their vision of demons and witches. Then there is a dramatization of the situation of the witches in the Middle Ages, witchcraft and witch-hunts. Finally the film compares the behavior of hysteria of contemporary (1921) women with the behavior of the witches in the Middle Ages, concluding that they are very similar.

Review:

A weird and rather wonderful brew of fiction, documentary and animation based on 15th and 16th century witchcraft trials, Christensen's film has a remarkable visual flair that takes in Bosch, Breughel and Goya (no wonder it was a particular favourite of the Surrealists). The director himself plays Satan, seducing a woman while she is in bed with her husband; another episode follows an accused witch through the tortures of the Inquisition.

Plot / Synopsis:

The first film in Hans-Jürgen Syberberg’s “German Trilogy” (followed by Karl May and Our Hitler ) is a low budget, but nonetheless imaginative interpretation of the life of Ludwig II of Bavaria. Harry Baer portrays the so-called “mad king,” who was the patron of Richard Wagner, the man who sold Bavaria to Prussia, and the builder of many a mythic castle in the Rhineland. Modernist to the core, Ludwig is both theater and film–a montage of sketches and tableaux with cabaret music, wild costumes, and even wilder characters.

Review:

The first part of Syberberg's remarkable trilogy (followed by Karl May and Hitler, a Film from Germany), this takes the legend of Ludwig II of Bavaria (Wagner's patron, virgin homosexual, mad visionary, builder of impossible castles, aesthetic recluse) and filters it through the subsequent chaos of German history: the rise of Bismarck and the Prussians at the turn of the century, and the rise of Hitler in the '30s. It's constructed as a series of 28 tableaux, which makes it more like a pageant than a conventional drama: it's full of deliberate disjunctions and contradictions (both Wagnerian stage designs and modern video footage are used as back-projections, for instance), and it feels free to use elements of kitsch (a Nazi rhumba) alongside moments of 'high art' (Isolde's Liebestod) without apparent distinction. The slow pace and ultra-mannered staging compel either fascination or outright rejection. Those fascinated are rewarded with constant surprises and delights, because it's one of the most beautiful and defiantly original movies of the '70s.

Plot / Synopsis:

Flanders, a famous female author, travels 1989 after the fall of the Berlin wall into the German capitol. She is deeply depressed of the events because she saw the communistic states as a very good thing that has now ended. In the joy of these days she finds no person to understand her, so she has to travel back to Munich. After meeting several people, known and unknown, it seems as if there will be no way to go.

Review:

The third feature from much feted young German director Oskar Roehler is a confident and partly autobiographical work - the central character was based on Roehler's own mother, the writer Gisela Elsner - that has already won its young director numerous prizes, including this year's German Film Prize.

Set in 1989, the film tells the story of Hanna Flanders (Elsner), an eccentric, intellectual, middle-aged German writer torn between her idealisation of East Germany and a rapidly changing society. Living alone in her smart Munich apartment, Hanna clings desperately to the literary fame she achieved many years ago. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the prospect of a unified Germany plunges Hanna further into despair and self doubt. Deciding finally to reject her alcohol-fuelled flamboyant lifestyle, Hanna resolves to resurrect her life, her career, and a dormant romance by selling everything she owns and setting out on a new, if uncertain, life in Berlin.

Driven by a tour-de-force performance from Hannelore Elsner, who is quite simply mesmerising, "No Place To Go" is certainly one of the strongest films to come out of Germany in recent years. Reminiscent of the works of such iconoclasts as Fassbinder and Von Trotta in its intelligent depiction of a troubled female protagonist and its capacity to deal with politics in social and human terms, Roehler's film - complemented by sumptuous black and white photography by Hagen Bogdanski - is by turns honest, beautiful, and undeniably moving.

Plot / Synopsis

Therefore, in this context, a painting of an open market booth that juxtaposes a vendor selling assorted fruits vegetables in the foreground as two lovers steal a kiss in the background does not serve to convey a richness of ancillary, quotidian detail and sense of realism to the constructed image, but rather, to present a consumer-programmed associative link between inanimate objects and human beings where the consumption of goods (the marketed produce) provides a gateway to pleasure (the lovers’ rendezvous). It is this ritualized pursuit of the precise moment of balance between visual composition and image-embedded coding that defines the heart of Farocki’s exposition – a visual state in which the synthetic production of images the delineation between art and commercialization is blurred – an aesthetic point of convergence towards a singularity of manufactured illusion.

The politically radical avant-garde filmmaker Harun Farocki takes the reins for this offbeat look at late 20th Century German society. In a not-so-thinly-veiled critique of Capitalist consumerism, Farocki draws jarring parallels between the still-life paintings of the Dutch masters, and contemporary advertisements for such products as beer, watches and cheese. The remainder of the film takes place in a contemporary advertising agency, where Farocki's cameras observe various executives creating "contemporary still-lifes." In the process, Farocki upends commonly-held perceptions of what constitutes art.

Plot / Synopsis

Illuminacja follows the education of a young man from his entry into college to his final achievement of a doctorate. Paralleling his outer education, his inner education about life, family, sexuality and spiritual values is revealed. By the time he achieves his doctorate, he has been told that he has a life-shortening heart disease. However, because of his two-fold education, he is fulfilled in what he has done and is not much distressed.

This Polish film, by the notable director Krzysztof Zanussi, won many awards at Italian film festivals.

Monteiro moved far away from the visual opulence defined by his earlier films with his inspired adaptation of radical Swiss writer Robert Walser’s “anti-fairy tale.” Carefully restricting the image track, Monteiro maintains the screen almost totally black in order to focus instead on the voices of Snow White, the Prince, the Queen, and the Hunter, engaged in an extended debate about love, free will, and the events leading up to the fateful attempt on the maiden’s life. Despite its visual austerity, Snow White is haunted by the arresting images with which it begins—infamous black-and-white photographs of Walser’s lying dead in the snow after his heart attack outside a Swiss asylum at the age of seventy-eight, a strange realization of the “death of the author” so central to postmodern literary criticism.

Review:

João César Monteiro ’s interpretation of Snow White is clearly meant to incense and challenge our understanding of storytelling and the cinematic medium. Running little over an hour, the majority of the film’s running time is series of dialogues against a black screen, occasionally interrupted by breaks in the scene, signalled by various images of clouds, ruins and Monteiro himself. The film’s release at the dawn of a new millennium seems to be an act of providence, and as cinema enters its second century of life, Snow White challenges our very understanding of the medium by prioritizing sound over sight, in an experimental and meta-textual journey through myth.

Imagine the epic photographic series of Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado granted startling mobility, and you’ll have some sense of Glawogger’s remarkable presentation of extreme labour worldwide. From illegal Ukrainian coal mining to Indonesian sulphur extraction via Pakistani shipbreaking yards and the Boschian inferno of a Nigerian slaughterhouse (difficult viewing indeed), it becomes very clear that beneath the watercooler veneer of the selectively operating post-industrial information age, work for many millions proceeds apace with even greater risks and hardship. Essential viewing, this committed work restores worth and value to those who, unseen and unheard, literally create our world.

Plot / Synopsis

Maria, a Venezuelan woman returns to Venezuela from France when she learns that her aunt Oriana has died and willed her a crumbling and remote Venezuelan hacienda where Maria spent a short time as a girl just entering puberty. Maria goes to the hacienda, a fine, decaying old house in a tropical jungle at the edge of the sea, to prepare the place for sale; while visiting the house, Maria starts wandering through the halls and rooms and she begin to remember her visit years before. While going through her aunt's papers, she also start to find some clues to her aunt's behaviour. Maria is haunted by flashbacks to her childhood, when she spent several months at the hacienda in the company of only the beautiful and mysterious Oriana and Fidelia, a quarrelsome old retainer who constantly hints at terrible events that are best forgotten. In flashbacks, the film show the young Maria trying to understand the quiet but strange atmosphere that surrounds the place while sorting out why Oriana never leaves the hacienda and what secret may be in Oriana's past. The young Maria, as she learns things, imagines her aunt's youth, cruel father, and first love. After these reveries within reveries, Maria, now a grown woman, eventually makes one more discovery by connecting some issues, finding evidence that someone never seen may also be living in the vicinity. After that, Maria decides not to sell the house.

Review:

Kicking off with memorably beautiful music and images, this third fiction feature from Rafi Pitts – a London-educated Iranian whose previous film was a documentary on Abel Ferrara – is a stylish, confident fable that at first comes across a little like a reworking of ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’. After a man recently made jobless takes a train to seek work abroad, his attractive young wife (Mitra Hadjar), daughter and mother are left to fend for themselves in their small home on the edge of town.

Months pass with no news of the husband; understandably, doubts arise as to whether he’s even still alive, and life gets harder. Meanwhile, a handsome but feckless mechanic (Ali Nicksolat) who’s new to town notices the woman now rumoured to be a widow, and starts hanging around in the hope of catching her attention…

The crucial difference here from the James M Cain story is that Pitts never plays this situation for suspense, other than how the heroine will respond to her suitor’s advances. Still, the film is as specifically aligned to its setting as Cain’s novel was to southern California, and it reflects on how poverty, unemployment and the need to seek work elsewhere affect Iranian families. That, however, makes it all sound too analytically political, for it’s a determinedly lyrical meditation on how economic factors and loneliness may influence both social and sexual relationships. Happily, sturdy performances all round ensure the film feels real rather than merely ‘poetic’, and even though it doesn’t pack a particularly strong punch in emotional terms, it’s an impressively intelligent piece of work, and well worth catching.
