I was going to sweep this into a quick cap post with Heartless City and Shark since they all started at roughly the same time, but I’m going to give this its own post because I LURVE IT. Oh and it’s been a really long time since I devoted some quality time to write a drama post :’(

So I really didn’t expect to like this, because the premise seemed kitschy and the cast was kind of head-scratchy, but this does come from the writer of “Dream High,” which I adored. Blah blah blah about judging a book by its cover because it’s preeeeetty frackin great.

I always like reading about others’ work processes, so I wanted to give it a go for this piece.

The whole process was spread out over four days, from start to finish. Research took longer than usual because I didn’t know that Simms worked with SM on as many tracks as he did, and I gave all of them a listen again. I got distracted when I accidentally wandered over to a Shinee website where a bunch of fanatic Shawols were yelling at Sean Kingston for “stealing” Shinee’s “Ready or Not.” Anyway…

The interview with Simms lasted about an hour, and it was a really interesting conversation, I learned a lot. Simms was ultra animated and excited about his own work process and how the tracks came together, which allowed me to throw all kinds of questions at him. He was game to answer pretty much everything I asked, which is awesome because it gave me the opportunity to unleash my curiosities.

I know, I know. You look at it and for a split second you’re like, “Ugh, how obnoxious.” But after that split second you’re probably thinking, “Wow this is awesome, it’s the best thing ever.” Don’t be jealous.

Anyway. Last week, I went to the Apple store to see if they could get my iPod nano fixed, because the home button on it wasn’t working. I’ve been putting my entire library on shuffle for a while now, because I’ve been sick of all the music I listen to and putting 2000 songs on shuffle lessens the pain a little. I discovered that you can set the home button to skip songs when you double click on it and have been abusing the poor button, so last Wednesday it just got stuck and refused to pop back up.

This song is a grower. I’m really into the whole package of the song: the choreo, the easy-going nature of the melody and vocals, the look of the group. If this were the only title song 2PM was promoting for this comeback after two years, I’d be a lot more dismissive, but it’s not, so I think it’s okay that it doesn’t have that instant “wow” factor that drives passionate conversation.

I prefer a less aggressive 2PM and I think the group owns the mature, mid-tempo R&B dance sound that other boy groups haven’t been to do very well. This song has JYP stamped all over it, but of all their past R&B title tracks, I think 이 노래를 듣고 돌아와 is a more successful iteration of the yearning-young-male-constipated-by-love thing that JYP keeps shoving on them. (I’ll Be Back, Without U were okay as songs but they were too much as packages: the burdensome choreography, the burdensome stage outfits.) (Watch, just because I complained about this, “하.니.뿐” is going to feature them dressed in bird feathers and wearing rhinestone eye makeup.)

Barring a couple of weird moves, I also really dig the choreo. I like that it’s very musical stage-ish, enhanced by the fact that they look like a bunch of prep school boys. A boy group can essentially never go wrong with a suit concept, but there are two sides of the suit spectrum: the grown-up side, and the young man side. The young man side is what it is (Shinee with Dream Girl, Infinite with Man in Love), but the grown up side is always a failure in the making with K-pop guy groups. It’s always too dramatic and desperately screaming “BOY BAND” in some way or another, which renders the concept tacky and outdated. U-Kiss’ image team is a serial offender of this, and Stop Girl was really ridiculous because Dongho’s vest had to match Eli’s jacket which matched Soohyun’s pants which looked like Kevin’s bowtie. Like, why?

2PM look well-dressed, they can move and breathe in their clothes, and it fits their style and personalities. I do think that 2PM is at a stage in their careers where they can afford to discard an identity of sameness in favor of a more fluid individuality within the group, while still preserving a unique kind of boy group unity.

I took these photos with my Nikon FM10 at the end of 2010, and didn’t get around to scanning the prints until now. Ummmmm yeah.

I have another roll from 2011 that I didn’t even develop yet. I don’t even know where to get photographs developed anymore, it’s such a dead art form. Committing to film photography is a huge labor of love (and lots and lots of money). I don’t know how anyone does it.

When I first got my FM10, I made Melissa sit with me on the phone for an hour to walk me through the camera, because it was my first film camera. My first ever roll was disastrous, these are some of the better shots.

Once the weather gets nicer, I promise I’ll make an attempt to find a film place to get my other roll developed (shots from China from two years ago! #fml) and to take more photos.

In the meantime, here’s a happier-weather-ish kind of song.

And here’s a cover I like just as much.

I like Tablo a lot. I have unending admiration for his intelligence and brilliant way with words. He has a gift for expression and music creation. He’s funny, sarcastic, sharp and articulate, and his music is moving and creative. He’s a charismatic performer and an all-around interesting thinker.

He’s also becoming a flaming hypocrite.
