I was awoken this morning by a group of turkeys gobbling in the forest that I had camped in on the bank of the Platte River. Certainly much better than the electronic beeping sound that I usually get at home. As I got out of my sleeping bag I was struck again by the myriad of birds in the forest that were talking away for the world to hear. I wish I knew something about birds, I could tell you what they were.

The color of the sunrise this morning was caught by some clouds off to the east which reflected nicely off the still water in this slough off the main river. I know I am only an hour away from the city, but it is a completely different world out here and I absolutely love it.

This reaffirms for me why I am a photographer, I love being out in nature and exploring around trying to understand it better and bring it back for you. I hope that my pictures take you away from whatever is bothering you and take you to these places that I visit. Please reward yourself by looking at them often!

The river is surrounded by a forest of cottonwood trees, and I love wandering through the shapes of the trees, like that army in the Lord of the Rings movie, silent giants just waiting for their turn. I brought my infrared camera to shoot with and it really has the ability to accentuate the trunk of the tree by making the foliage much brighter than usual, taking something this is familiar and making it unfamiliar. I like that.

I just had to get out of Denver and today was the day. I headed up to a place on the South Platte near Wiggins that I have gone to off and on over the years. I spent a lot of time here with my dad hunting for ducks, so it is a place that is full of memories for me. I suppose in my subconscious I like to go there because it reminds me of him. I am usually there in the winter time, that’s when you hunt ducks, and it has been some years since I have visited during other times of the year. As I arrived it was clear to me that it was completely different, much more verdant than the lifeless winter.

At my first stop I was overcome with life. As I strolled among the young grass shoots I noticed a large area of yellowish color off in front of me, a field of clover in bloom. A wave of sweet air hit me as I passed a blossoming honey suckle, covered with moths doing their business spreading pollen. I was serenaded by a myriad of bird calls around me, and even chided by a hawk circling overhead for encroaching on his territory.

And then the wind came and it changed entirely. It sounded like an approaching waterfall and I wash’t sure what I was hearing, I actually got nervous that it might be a wall of water and I quickly moved to higher ground. Then it hit me and I was pushed back, feeling a little foolish for being scared, but the sound that all the leaves make rustling in the wind is larger than I would have anticipated.

Got out early this morning hoping for a little better light for the sunrise but we were greeted by more falling snow and flat light. This gave us an opportunity to really look hard for interesting compositions that portrayed the magnificent setting that was in front of us. I worked hard to get a good picture of this incredible barn in relation to the mountains in the background. I really like this composition, with the barn and the mountain opposed to each other, forming an implied diagonal in the picture and keeping your eyes traveling back and forth, just taking the whole scene in. I hope you enjoy it as well.

This afternoon we drove up north of Steamboat through the Elk River Valley and saw some spectacular scenery. The storm was not exactly raging, but it did snow lightly throughout the whole afternoon. We headed north on Road 129 which winds around through the Elk River Valley through Clark and by Steamboat Lake State Park and eventually crosses the mountains and descends into the Little Snake River Valley and into Wyoming. We turned off at Clark onto Road 62 which loops around and has enough fulltime residents on it that the County actually keeps it plowed throughout the winter. It felt kind of like driving through a maze, the snow was piled up into 8 foot snow drifts on both sides of the road in some spots.

Along the way we saw many groves of aspen trees and stopped to shoot a few. I really like the way this one turned out, the contrast of the grey trunk with the orange lichen really stands out to me. Also, if you look closely you can see individual snowflakes that were caught by the fast shutter speed I was using. I purposefully used a wide-open aperture to limit the depth of field and focus your attention on the trees that I focused on. This is one of those shots where all of the elements came together to make a really nice image that captured the spirit of the day.
