At SolidWorks World 2012, Josh and Adam bagged an exclusive interview with the one and only Bernard Charles, CEO of a little French mom-and-pop known as Dassault Systèmes (that’s ‘Dassault Systems’ for you Anglophones). The News:

Today, we bring you the history of Makerbot! It begins… NOW.

In 2005, the RepRap project began, funded by the University of Bath in the UK.

Support structures on 3D printed parts are often removed with chemical baths or in the case of Makerbot printers a water and soap bath.

In November 2008, the first 3D printed replication occurs outside the RepRap project. The world will never be the same.

January 2009. Makerbot Industries enters the scene co-founded in Brooklyn, New York by Adam Mayer, (founding RepRap member) Zach Smith and, our special guest Bre Pettis.

Bre continues one of his pursuits as a puppeteer, the ‘Three Piggy Opera’ being one of many performed in 2005.

5 years later, slices of a 3D printed Pig’s head were given to Master of Design graduates at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

The same year, September 2010, Makerbot introduced the Thing-o-Matic, their second printer, with upgraded electronics, larger build area and an automated build platform.

The smallest build platform is on a 3D printer created by Klaus Stadlmann, measuring 20×30 mm, creating sculptures smaller than a human hair with lasers and a resin bath.

January 2012, Makerbot introduced for the first time, the Makerbot Replicator, with two-color printing and a massive build area.

Today, things are still heating up. People have been known to mod the Makerbot printers, using laser pointers to turn them into laser cutters.

If you’ve ever wanted to print your own playsets, well, the time has come. frankly, I’m surprised this is one of the first. Makerbot has made free, downloadable 3d files for dollhouses, dolls and accessories. You can download the MakerBot Fairytale Castle Playset right now. Don’t worry boy, there’s also a rocket playset, but I’m pretty sure a bunch of little girls just got really interested in 3D printing.

The Hong Kong Fashion show kicked off with the 12th annual footwear design competition. There were some absolutely insane designs. Sky-high heels with a deck of card motif, boat shoes shaped… like a boat and some slick wooden platforms with a laser-cut leather overlay that Josh would look simply dazzling in.

Tech has taken another big leap with researchers at IBM demonstrating the first atomic-scale magnetic memory where they have successfully shown that a single bit of information can be stored in as few as 12 magnetic atoms as opposed to currently available hard-disk drives, which use about one million atoms to store a single bit of information.

CAD on the iOS and Android? Next summer it will be possible. Russian software developer Geometros will launch the first native cad engine for the devices.

Tech Soft 3D, the company that creates the HOOPS visualization technology, used in many CAD programs, is making bank with revenue up 40%.

Apple has release iBooks 2 and with it the ability for authors/publishers to get their books out to the iPad masses, granted you price the book under 14.99 and give a 30% cut to Apple.

The News:

Well, we’ve just been hit with CES, the consumer electronics show. Plenty of cool make related tech to look forward to and much that isn’t too far off.

First, we’ve got Cubify.com and the Cube 3D printer from 3D Systems. This is excellent folks, not only is is a 3D print service and community, they also have a desktop 3D printer you and your kids can use at home. The cube rings in at $1299, has a 5.5” cubed build area and cartridges start at $50 bucks a pop. check it out at Cubify.com. So cool, I’m certainly getting one.

Oh boy. Micrsoft has announced that Kinect is coming to Windows. Now, if you’re not familiar with this, Kinect is an device that allows you to interact with software using your hands or just about anything you like. It came out for the Xbox and has seen countless hacks. Now it’s coming to the PC February 1st, has and open sdk and if you’ve ever thought mouse-free interaction with your cad model was ever going to happen, I imagine we’ll be seeing that very soon.

Now, you know Geomagic software allows you to bring in scanned data and fix it for your cad software import, but what happens after that? Well, SpaceClaim and Geomagic have just announced a direct link to SpacecClaim from Geomagic. Now you can make a shiny B-rep via Geomagic and bring it into SpaceClaim to tweak away, which spells out one quick and easy process for dealing with that 3D data dump.

How has making things changed over the years? How are more people creating than ever before? Those are just a couple of the questions being asked by PressPausePlay, a documentary film from the House of Radon that takes a look a the digital revolution that has been unleashed upon us over the last decade. Today we are chatting with Alex Numann and Evan Malone of NextFab Studio, who are taking a membership approach to the maker-space model, so getting access to top-quality digital fabrication tools like 3D Printers and milling machines is as easy as joining a gym. We asked them to come on because we’re big believers that the maker movement is changing the way people think about the products that people like Josh and I design.

• Enjoy the idea of printing object in the material of your choice? Well, you’ve probably heard of printing chocolate, mashed potatoes and even skin cells, but now… there’s ice. This cool new way of printing is part of a research project at McGill University. The prints are created by a water/methyl ester depositing robot building the piece layer-by-icy layer. It currently takes about 132 hours to build an 11 inch model. Ice sculptors, your job just got easier.
• What do you do after growing an engineering community to 70,000 users and 20,000 3D CAD models? You snag a massive $4 million in series A funding to add to the 1.1 million seed round you already have. The GrabCAD engineer and design community did just that to kick off the new year, with plans to grow the bustling model sharing site to the largest online engineering community in the universe.
• And how is GrabCAD being used? Well, If you’re a fan of Portal or Portal 2, the teleporting escape game from Steam, you could grab some Portal models off the site and recreate them. Logan Siahaan and Stephen Hess are a couple of portal jumping fiends and did just, reverse engineering the handheld Portal device that using everything from CNC and vacuum forming to glow sticks to make it happen. Very cool guys.
• Now, if you’re interested in having your very own desktop 3d printer, you’ll be happy to know the Printrbot kickstarter project is fully funded. They had a goal of $25,000, met that, then proceeded to achieve 830,000 in total. Now, the project will bring a full 3D printing kit to you for under $500. First of its kind at that price and the first Josh will use to print out the first replica of himself.

You may have heard that a little start-up called GrabCAD landed itself a hefty chunk of series A funding this last week (4.1 million, to be exact), in addition to their staggering growth over the last few months. It’s a web-based platform bringing animation and rigging to your browser and letting you keep your assets where you want them. A model for CAD to come? I think so.
• And……how about some open-source software to bring realistic motion and explosion to your animated scenes? Bullet Physics simulation experiment is now running on the Chrome Browser. You can try it for yourself, toss some boxes and roll some balls. Hours of simulated fun coming to the web. very cool.
• The New York Times has an interesting piece on the production of the movie Hugo. A Martin Scorsese film about an orphan in 1930′s Paris who lives in the walls of a train station, based on Brian Selznick’s children’s book. The article delves into the large sets created for the film to recreate a modernist mechanical mash-up of machinery and materials coming at you in three dimensions. It’s truly a masterpiece of set design and, like any Scorsese film, a must-see.

• Now, you’ve thought about it, but how do really create a chair. Here are the steps. 1) Create a perforated metal prism 2) fill a mannequin with concrete 3) drop said mannequin on metal prism from a height of 50ft. It’s exactly what Ezri Tarazi did, repeatedly, to create ‘Free Falling’, a chair design ‘shaped by the human figure’ each time their concrete-filled female mannequin is dropped onto it. They’re not available yet, but you can see more mannequin violence at EvD1.com.
• Hide your children and your ladders. A Japanese company has created a ladder climbing robot. It’s slow, clumsy looking, uses five motors to maneuver about the rails and at 4 feet tall is creepy enough to give you the fear.
• If you’ve got a lot of time on your hand and interested in learning how mold sustainable housings and other household implements out dry leaves, mud, wet grass or even manure, you’re in luck. ‘Make it, mold it’ is a new venture set out to teach you the method of shaping such things into practical objects for survival living and dare I say, living in style?

After weeks of trying out wigs and dresses, Adam and Josh finally decided that it would ‘probably’ be best to have ‘actual’ females on the show to discuss the state of being a female designer or engineer in today’s competitive product design world. • How do you spell awesome? R-O-B-O-T-S. Robots people! 3D Printed Robots to be exact. You have a complete UI to create, share, print and gift your robot overlord creations. Right in time for the holidays and something I stayed up way to late playing with. So cool.
• It may come as a surprise, but the CAD Market you toil yourself through each day is worth $7 Billion dollars. It’s true. Jon Peddie research released their worldwide CAD Market report, and as it turns out, you’re also a wee spec in a growing community of 19 million CAD users. Plenty of shoulders to lean on though as slow growth continues into next year, in a market headed to cloud and mobile apps.
• Speaking of mobile apps, software developer Javier Edo has released Forger, a sculpting app for the iPad. If you like Zbrush or Sculptris or have downloaded 123D Sculpt by Autodesk, you’ll LOVE this. Forger allows you to import or export OBJ files, comes with 9 brushes, mesh visibility and masking. It’s on the app store for $2.99. BOOM.
• And what do you do, when you can’t afford to build a multi-person, rocket propelled hovercraft? Make a movie about it and launch the project on Kickstarter to the chagrin of your parents. That’s exactly what Johnathan Stemmons is doing, and he’s nearly got the funding to make rocket-powered water-slash-land travel your preferred method of taking the kids to soccer practice in the not-to-distant future.
• Finally, how do you slam CAD and fashion couture together? Start a online fashion incubator like Dassualt Systemes did this week. FashionLab is the new site to envision future design tools for designers, stylists and fancy dressers. Hit the 3ds.com catwalk to see how fashion design is done and get your haute design digs on.

Today we’ll be talking with design media honcho Jeremy Bout, producer of the exciting new manufacturing show ‘The Edge Factor’. Jeremy started his career in design and manufacturing before diving head first into media. • Big news in 3D printing this week. 3D System continues their consumption of 3D print related businesses. This time it’s printer manufacturer, ZCorp, creators of the first full-color 3D printer. This is part of a larger acquisition of ZCorp sister company Vidar systems. Total price 3DSystems will pay for both is $137 million.
• T-Splines 3.3 will be released this month with a hot, new reverse engineering tool. The new tool allows you to fit T-Splines surfaces to your scanned data creating an editable, unified, watertight surface. The geometry is lightweight and fast. News of the release should hit T-Splines.com soon.
• UK policy makers and industry execs are bent on ridding the world of the perception that Britain doens’t make anything in a new campaign aimed at highlighting the wonders of the UK manufacturing world. the ’Make it in Great Britain’ campaign, championed by William Butler-Adams from Brompton Bicycles, Michael Ryan of Bombardier Aerospace and others, will host a national competition to find cutting-edge products and feature innovative pieces of UK manufacturing in an exhibition at the Science Museum late next year.
• Tolemie Elrington is sculptor creating animals, birds and marine life from recycled materials and scrap. You’ll see his work in sculpture parks and at HubCapCreatures.com.
• Adobe is rolling out 6 new photo-editing, design-centric apps for android, iphone later.
• Newtek releases Lightwave 11 with camera matching and ZBrush support.
• Autodesk University will hit Las Vegas next week where we’re sure to find out more about their PLM venture and how it relates to media and manufacturing.

• Special Guest Anna Wood’s SolidMuse.com and Renderbay.com
• Some hot, new multi-threading tech has been developed by a team of researchers at Columbia Engineering School. Programs like 3D rendering, some modeling programs, and a vast majority of others, that take advantage of multi-threading, are becoming more common. The new software system, Peregrine, optimizes the multi-core right out of this. Perigrine computes a plan for the thread, letting them know when they can pass each other, preventing collisions, and the lag, bugs and annoyance of crashes that can otherwise result. It works with existing program languages and the cool thing is, that once it’s computed a good plan for changing those lanes, it can reuse that plan on subsequent operations speeding up processes on multiple levels. • HP is taking 3D OUT of the printer, making it possible to scan your object with their new 3D scanner. It’s the TopShot LaserJet Pro and it’ll scan the hell outta whatever you slap on top of it, in full multi-color to boot.
• Now, most of create renderings with computers and HDR environments, but with wool? Well, leave it to a couple of designers to convert a 2D ink drawing to physcial 3D forms using wool. Yes, but 3D software was in the mix. First they modeled the space in order to position the framework of fishing line that would support the woolen geometry – this created a net along floor, ceiling and wall which…they then used to glue, tape and velcro sections of the merino wool along. They describe the application of the wool as a meticulous replication of sketching, which sounds like an incredible way to enjoy an evening.

• How do you solve the world’s problems if you’re old and have a lot of money? Easy, you give your money to a large university. Bob and Dottie King have donated 150 million dollars to Stanford in the effort to rid the world of global poverty. The university is known for it’s research and support of technologies such as the D.light, a portable solar-powered light, the Embrace, a $25 infant incubator and Driptech, a ultra affordable diy irrigation system for small-plot farming. That’s right. They’re also getting a matching grant that will bring the fund up to 200 million. Not a bad chunk of change that can be reinvested in the university resources and the entire freakin’ world.
• Money isn’t the only thing falling from the sky. The OLPC, or one laptop per child project, is planning tablet drops of their XO-3 tablet into remote villages of developing countries. The wee tablets, with a $75 production price point, will be filled with books for people to read after they’ve recovered from any concussion via the downpour of tablet tech. This lines up with the self-directed learning ideas of OLPC…and comes about after meager sales of it’s original laptop. Keep your head up because there’s no word on when or where the tablet are planned to be dropped.
• And sun-sucking solar firm Polysolar out of the UK is developing breakthrough technology that could affect energy use and access to the most remote parts of the world. Their transparent photovoltaic (pv) glazing technique allows a thin film on regular household or office windows without a mess of wires or massive rooftop solar panel installation. With 85-125W of power-generating film, the tech can be used to replace windows integrated into small shelters or schoolhouses providing free, clean energy to power… lighting or tablets that fall from the sky.

• Rev up that 3D laser scanner! Noomeo has put the data optimizing goodness into a new version of Numisoft, their 3D capture software, making their Optinum 3D scanner even more opti-awesome. Locating the scans in 3D space is improved and file size is cut down by a factor of 16. Scan that!
• Geomagic has been use to create the most accurate 3D model of the ancient monument, Stonehenge. It’s the highest resolution scan to date. Geomagic studio was used by laser scanning specialists Greenhatch group to scan the massive monoliths. You can see the 3D at the English Heritage website.
• Inforbix has released their deep data CAD search product to the masses. It allows you to search your 3D data from where ever you have web access.
• Aras, makers of the open source PLM software, have done the unimaginable, nay, the unthinkable! They released Aras-EPLM. It turns SolidWorks Enterprise PDM into a full fledge PLM product. This however, is not open source.
• RTT, who brings you the high-priced DeltaGen 3D rendering product, has released a scaled down product, called DeltaPix… which is actually Bunkspeed Shot repackaged and sold at a lower price.
• And if you’re into rings and things, you’ll want to check out iRing3D.com – iRing3D is an iPad app from Paracloud that allows you to create your own custom jewelry and send it to Shapeways or Sculpteo to be printed. Grab the app on iTunes for $5.99.

• Prepare to rejoice NX fans. Siemens has released NX 8 bringing new direct editing enhancements, the ability to sudivide models for concurrent design, more pattern layouts and some slick new multi-physics analysis solutions.
• Things are heating up in the direct modeling scene. After an IP acquisition by the parent company of Bricsys, direct modeling capability is out in Bricsys V12 and in the same month licensed to Ascon for the new version of Kompas 3D. (and for some context, this would be akin to Siemens acquiring the Parasolid IP and licensing it to other 3D software companies.)
• 3D Systems just gobbled up Alibre in July, but they’re not loungin’ around. They’ve just released Alibre Design 2012. Features include a sporty new UI, faster sketching and the ability to copy and paste surface from Rhino and Moment of Inspiration.
• The 3D animation industry is a’growin’ in China. Shandong currently has over 800 comic and animation companies, but they’re adding a 3,000 acre outsourcing park to employ another 80,000 skilled workers for the animation sector.
• Techsoft 3D has rebranded Hoops3d which means company CEO, Ron Fritz, will need a new tattoo.
• Alexey Ershov, at 32, becomes the youngest CEO of Ledas, which means Josh’s chance is gone.
• Autodesk has acquired Alice Labs and their speedy point cloud tech used in maya and max plugins.
• 3D World is launching a new iOS app for iPad and iPhone. You can grab a free issue if you head over and download it right now.
