Some last hours, some days, some very few last longer. But so many fall by the wayside only to crop up every once in a while to make us feel guilty for not following through.

Well, I want this to be a year of gratitude for me and you so here is what I'm proposing: let's challenge and discipline ourselves to come back to the Everyday Testimony Project every single day for a whole month and share our testimony.

It takes us a while to get into the habit of something and giving thanks is no different. We have to look, examine, meditate, and share. The more we give, the more we see how blessed we truly are.

I would love for you to share with everyone on this site, but maybe you can't or won't for some reason. In that case, I challenge you to get a notebook or a journal and write something every day about why you are thankful.

Maybe you want to do a combination or put it both on this site and in a notebook. However you want to do it is great, just be sure to do it!

Make it a priority, set an alarm to remind you if you need it (I have often employed this technique). This will get us one step closer to giving thanks in every circumstance because this is God's will for us (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

If you want to participate, think about adding your name in the comments so that you have a "written" record of you participating and go tell someone else about it too (someone close or an online friend). Accountability is great motivator.

Be blessed! (and yes, I'm taking the challenge)

Thanks for the Presence

Christmas is a beautiful time of year for the most part. Sure, commercialism has not so subtly taken a huge chunk of meaning out of a lot of people's holiday traditions, but God stands above it all.

We give gifts to each other and if we are polite, we say thank you to each other. We may or may not like the gift we received. We may love it and wonder how the other person could have known exactly what to get.

Sort of reminds me of Jesus.

Lots of people don't know what to do with the gift of Jesus. A Father gave sacrificially. A Son carried the sacrificial love all the way to the cross. Some people understand this gift and they are humbled and astonished at the thought.

Others are offended and abhorrent at the very same thought. The life, the joy, the forgiveness, and the love that is the gift of Christ can be ours today. Too often we don't know what we have and attempt to exchange it for any number of superficial things or momentary pleasures.

We want instant gratification, but the gift God gave is a slower process. Christ is being formed in us and I want to remember this blessing of presence.

He was present in human form to live the life I couldn't and ultimately take the punishment I couldn't bear. I accept this beautiful gift and aspire to live a life of thanksgiving for what He has accomplished and who He is.

Merry Christmas to you all.
Would you say, "Yes, absolutely" or would you have some hesitation?

There is a simple and easy way to tell. But first, I may be getting old because this reminds me of a story.

When I was in high school, I had a group of close friends as most teenagers do. Within this group, laughter was highly prized. We would spend hours sitting around in any number of places telling each other stories of funny things that had happened to us.

At the store, at school, at home, in the car--everything was fair game and we would refine our story-telling and one-liners for maximum impact. I will admit that I even embellished some stories to make them funnier.

It was not only extremely fun to spend the time together laughing, but made you feel good when your group of peers laughed with you. Because this was so highly valued, I would go out of my way to remember these funny things. I couldn't wait to tell them the next time I saw my friends.

That's how I know whether being thankful is important to someone or not.

Are they paying attention to the testimonies they are part of every day?

Is there an active participation in turning those blessings and recognition of God's faithfulness back to praise?

This site is intended to be a community where we encourage one another to believe God's best by hearing how He moves in each other's lives. Your sharing and participation are so valuable and reaching out further than you know.

If you value thankfulness, you'll pay attention. I know in all my busyness I can get distracted and miss things easily, but I ask for your help in making this a flourishing testimony in itself. Make sharing your thanks a priority in your life.

I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonders. (Psalm 9:1)

I hope that happens in the testimonies that you give, the ones you read, the posts you see here, and the occasional research I find. Today I want to challenge you to do something else, something that may take a bit more time but will be completely worth it.

I want to challenge you to write a letter of gratitude. Don't go anywhere! Stay with me now.

Psychologists have grabbed a hold of a concept that started with God ages ago: gratitude is good for you. It is something that we need to cultivate in our lives and it's always appropriate and beneficial. As with all things God asks of us, a little gratitude will do you good. He tells us to honor and love one another—recognize and appreciate the people who impact our lives.

If you don’t believe me, maybe you’ll believe Psychology Today, who says, “The biggest bonuses come from experiencing gratitude habitually, but natural ingrates needn't despair. Simple exercises can give even skeptics a short-term mood boost, and ‘once you get started, you find more and more things to be grateful for,’ says Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher at the University of California at Davis.”

Apparently, gratitude is like Pringles—once you pop, you just can’t stop—so what are you waiting for. Take the challenge and write a letter to someone who has impacted or influenced your life. Let God bring someone to your mind (maybe He already has) and open up your heart and put that pen to paper. Yes, you could email it, but think about mailing it or hand-delivering it. How much more would this mean to that person? This is about being personal and expressing sincere appreciation. After you write it, pray for the person however God leads.

This site is all about expressing thanks to God for the everyday, but we need to thank those around us as well. We thank our servers at a restaurant, but sometimes we forget to thank those who made the most difference in our lives whether it was through one act of kindness or support or a lifetime of giving. I guarantee some people will not how you were impacted by what they have done, while to you, they are considered defining moments.

In case you’re saying, “I really would like to do this, but I don’t know where to start.” Let me help you with a few suggestions or ideas that should jog that memory of yours. Think about…

I certainly didn't want a site dedicated to testimonies, thankfulness, and praise to be without a Thanksgiving post! The sacrilege. : )
I love it when a plan comes together. I love seeing fulfillment in the lives of people.

At the end of a long process of planning and building, Solomon finished the temple in Jerusalem and was in the time of dedicating it. That's where we come to in 2 Chronicles 5:13 and 14,

"The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang:
       "He is good;
       his love endures forever."
Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God."

This was a massive undertaking with incredible labor performed to bring the temple into reality. My question today is, what if we saw God as the architect of every day?

The point of this site is to examine and reflect every day on the testimonies of God's faithfulness we see so that we cultivate thankfulness. Maybe the place to start is in surrendering the day to Him.

A dream no matter how big has a beginning, a working time, and an end or completion. Consequently, so does every day.

What if at the beginning of every day
we recognized there was a purpose set by God,

                              followed that purpose,

then got into our beds or onto our knees
to dedicate all that work to Him

with thanks and praise for what He brought out of it?

I dare say we would all live radically different lives! I want to live this way. There should be no "boring" days, no "mundane" activities because His Spirit is upon us everywhere and in every situation.

At the end of the day, I want to look at the work God did through me, dedicate it to Him with thanks and praise, and be saturated with His glory. If a cloud shows up in my office or bedroom, I'm okay with that!

I know circumstances and hardship will come (or may be here now), but that's not the basis for my testimony or lack of one. It's my understanding, my taking the time to pause and recognize how greatly He has worked in my life on any given day.

Maybe a grand temple didn't get build today, but our being alive and seeking first His Kingdom and righteousness, loving and living the truth, is a cause for celebration and praise. It's easy to say "nothing good happened today," but it's life-changing to begin to see how His plans are unfolding in the seemingly insignificant and begin to thank God for it.

How about you? Are you good at recognizing that every day has a purpose and cause for thanksgiving? Or do you have some trouble with it like I do?

When the woman came to anoint Jesus with the perfume in Luke 7, He said that those who are forgiven much will love much. I’m convinced that if we can all get over ourselves and our self-righteousness we will see how much we’ve been forgiven and how much we should express our love.

I've talked about this verse before, Psalm 50:22 and 23 says,

“Consider this, you who forget God,

or I will tear you to pieces, with none to rescue:

He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me,

and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God." (emphasis mine)

A couple things stand out to me with these verses (besides the obvious violence of tearing someone to pieces).

Lack of thankfulness is really a forgetting of God.

Training ourselves to walk in a continuous state of thanksgiving is hard, but if we believe His word, then we are preparing the way for Him to show us His salvation, which I want to see!

Then jump again to the New Testament in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Now, I could take this the direction of thanking Him in the good and the bad, which I have talked about before. Instead, I just want to remind you to give thanks in the little, seemingly insignificant things.

Let me ask you the question, are you recognizing God’s hand and faithfulness everywhere? Jesus said nothing escapes His notice, and He is caring for us with the greatest of compassion and love.

WARNING: I’m about to overshare so if you don’t want to hear it, skip this paragraph! The other day I had a crazy representation of how deeply God has worked this in my life. I was once in the bathroom doing my business (you know you do it too—there’s even a kid’s book about it). I got up to go wash my hands, and I began to thank God I wasn’t constipated. This is the honest truth!

It was at this point that I started thinking, “Can you be too thankful? Is it silly to thank God for something like that?”

After thinking about my kids’ and other kids’ prayers, I decided it’s not that crazy. Jesus told us we enter the Kingdom like little children and children are free, they express themselves, they wonder aloud, and are thankful for the “silliest” things.

I had someone once ask me (although it was more of declaration), “don’t you think God has better things to do than to mess with that?” It was regarding something this person felt was inconsequential, but God desires relationship. We get the privilege to rightfully recognize His goodness and faithfulness in our lives, and who am I to say God cares or doesn’t cares about little things?

No, I believe God sees it all so clearly. If He can look in the midst of a wicked earth and see Noah and his family and decide they're worth saving, then He can be aware and in control of every little thing.

That’s why I thank God for the big things like my family, my church, and getting to fulfill my destiny; but I also thank Him when I get a good parking spot, find a sale on the cereal I like, or get to do something fun with my kids.

Thankfulness is foundational to worship, and I hope you’ll join me in giving thanks for all things. It’s a freer and more productive way to live!

All that said, what are thanking God for today? Have you shared your testimony on the home page? Is this real in your life or do you think I'm crazy!?

This was adapted from a post that originally appeared on Spark2flame.com.

As I continue reading through these insightful, wonderful posts, I see many stories of what true community has meant in people's lives. It has relieved stress and pressure. It has mended brokenness. It has helped to facilitate purpose. The stories are diverse and the benefits, profound.

This is why community is God's desire for us and Jesus prayed in John 17,

"...I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you."

Many amazing testimonies arise out of this type of community. It is a breeding ground for the miraculous. In big and small ways, we always find that God's desire and purpose for us will always bring about the best for us.

My reason for writing this today is to see if you would write an encouragement about community today. Share one of your everyday testimonies here or keep it short and link back to your blog for the longer version.

Will you take this moment to share your thanks and praise for living in community (however that has manifested itself)? Click here to hit the home page...

Calling All Thankful Writers

I think it's time to open this up a bit. Since this project started, I've wanted to develop a community around this idea of sharing everyday testimonies. I know we grow as we share our lives and hearts, giving thanks and praise to God.

In the spirit and interest of building that community, I would love to have you write a post (or more) for this site. If you are a blogger, writer, pastor, housewife, ad executive, dog groomer or anything else who wants to write about gratitude, thanks, and its importance then I want to hear from you!

Every one of us has a valuable and unique perspective. Your writing may be able to encourage someone in a different way.

The only prerequisite is that you remember the purpose of the site, to cultivate thankfulness. You can use scriptures, analogies, stories, or anything else you like to meet that purpose. I would also ask that you keep it 750 words or less as these are intended to be short devotionals. :)

On the other hand, if you aren't interested, maybe you know someone who is and you want to pass this along.

For those ready to go now, do one of two things:

Leave your name with an email and/or blog/site (if applicable) in the comment section on this post, or

Use the Contact Form in the box to the right to send me a message

Any questions? Feel free to ask either place...

I look forward to hearing from you as we encourage one another!

It's all Been Said...Say It Again

Last Sunday, we sang the MercyMe song, Cannot Say Enough. The lyrics are simple enough but very powerful,

What can we say to describe just a glimpse of Your Glory

How can our words portray but a thread of Your Majesty

But still we praise our Savior in Spirit and in Truth

For we cannot say enough about You

Every time we got to that last line, I felt so overwhelmed with gratitude. I felt as if I was going to explode!

The sad thing is that some feel they don't know what to say and say nothing. Sometimes we feel inadequate to share our praise.
We think it doesn't matter or won't make any difference, but as we give thanks, it affects (and changes) us and others, and it pleases God. How do I know? Because His word spells it out for us.

Psalm 100:4 may be familiar to you, "Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
go into his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him and praise his name."

You want to enter a beautiful, wonderful place? You want to find a better position to live out God's best for you? It begins with thanksgiving and praise! It's not just for the guy next to us, our spouse, our relatives, or our children. God wants to hear your heart, your thanks, and your praise. How humbling is that? The King of the universe loves your voice (and is your biggest fan).

It doesn't mean everything is worked out instantaneously, every problem solved; but thankfulness is not about how we feel. It's about recognizing who He is...

We will never be done telling Him how thankful we are because we will never be done exploring His greatness, faithfulness, and wonderful character.

We may not be able to describe Him accurately or thank Him enough, but we can commit to putting our whole being into trying and gratefully praising unashamedly and often.

Doesn't matter if others may write more elegantly or sing more beauitfully, you have a testimony. You have something inside you that is born uniquely out of your experiences. God has always been there and He's worthy of your praise.

I just encourage you to sing Him a song from your heart, just make it up on the spot. Sure, you can pray thanksgiving, but maybe you should throw more of yourself into it. You can do it in the car or get alone and pour out your heart. It's not that hard, you simply begin with...

What are you thankful for?
They become a burden or a rule unrelated to "real life."

The same is true as I present findings from research projects. I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I'm hoping to encourage you and confirm that our gratitude or lack thereof affects every part of our lives.

On that note, here are some highlights from Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough's research on the topic of thankfulness and gratitude (here's a link back to their findings):

Gratitude Interventions and Psychological and Physical Well-Being

In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).

A related benefit was observed in the realm of personal goal attainment: Participants who kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals (academic, interpersonal and health-based) over a two-month period compared to subjects in the other experimental conditions.

A daily gratitude intervention (self-guided exercises) with young adults resulted in higher reported levels of the positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy compared to a focus on hassles or a downward social comparison (ways in which participants thought they were better off than others). There was no difference in levels of unpleasant emotions reported in the three groups.

Participants in the daily gratitude condition were more likely to report having helped someone with a personal problem or having offered emotional support to another, relative to the hassles or social comparison condition.

In a sample of adults with neuromuscular disease, a 21-day gratitude intervention resulted in greater amounts of high energy positive moods, a greater sense of feeling connected to others, more optimistic ratings of one’s life, and better sleep duration and sleep quality, relative to a control group.

Children who practice grateful thinking have more positive attitudes toward school and their families (Froh, Sefick, & Emmons, 2008).

Measuring the Grateful Disposition

Most people report being grateful (an average rating of nearly 6 on a 7 point scale).

Well-Being: Grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, life satisfaction, vitality, optimism and lower levels of depression and stress. The disposition toward gratitude appears to enhance pleasant feeling states more than it diminishes unpleasant emotions. Grateful people do not deny or ignore the negative aspects of life.

Prosociality: People with a strong disposition toward gratitude have the capacity to be empathic and to take the perspective of others. They are rated as more generous and more helpful by people in their social networks (McCullough, Emmons, & Tsang, 2002).

Spirituality: Those who regularly attend religious services and engage in religious activities such as prayer reading religious material score are more likely to be grateful. Grateful people are more likely to acknowledge a belief in the interconnectedness of all life and a commitment to and responsibility to others (McCullough et. al., 2002). Gratitude does not require religious faith, but faith enhances the ability to be grateful.

Materialism: Grateful individuals place less importance on material goods; they are less likely to judge their own and others success in terms of possessions accumulated; they are less envious of others; and are more likely to share their possessions with others relative to less grateful persons.

Have you shared your everyday testimony today? Share it on the home page!
Since it's subject is giving thanks, I thought it appropriate to share it here as well (with a few additional interjections).

Here is one of my favorite verses about giving thanks. It's Psalm 50:23,

But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to
my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.

What a promise that is! All I have to do is stay close to Him and He will reveal His salvation. The Father is always willing to give us revelation so we can expect the further establishing of His healing, wholeness, salvation, deliverance, and whatever He wants to show us. That is plenty reason to give thanks with a passionate cry and honest worship.

No matter the circumstances or what we face, He is a great God and He is showing His salvation as we honor Him with our thanksgiving. Eric Hoffer said, "The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings." We don't have to live that way because the Son has set us free and we are free indeed.

This is Thanksgiving month (here in the U.S.) and it's fast approaching! As you gather with family and friends, eat your meals, and enjoy whatever God has graciously given- we can tune our hearts to gratitude and thanks, knowing that He loves us so much and is ready and willing to reveal His wondrous salvation.

This Psalm says clearly that He is going to reveal it. That must mean salvation's already there! Indeed it is, because He is there. Thanks and praise will keep us on the path so that we are in position to see His salvation.

Opening our hearts in gratitude is like putting on a pair of glasses. It improves our vision vastly! We can suddenly see Who walks beside us, leading and showing us the way. We see how great He truly is and will continue to be.

He is a wonderful Father, don't you think?

In Everything Give Thanks...

...for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thessalonians 5:18

Today is the launch of the Everyday Testimony Project where I hope you will return over and over to share in praising God for the miracles He does in our lives. I also hope you are encouraged as you read what others are saying.

Being thankful is so important to our faith
and growth, but we rarely take the time to deepen this skill. The purpose of this site is to cultivate that thankfulness. Life is full of opportunities to praise and recognize the miracles that happen. They may seem small to some, but God is worthy. It changes us to reflect and offer that gratitude. We begin to see things differently.

There is certainly more to testify than we generally think. Remember John 21:25? It says, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

That's the idea here. There is so much to be thankful for, and God is always working. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11).

I don't know about you, but I want to overcome! My testimony as well as yours is every day. It's time to be honest, be real, and be thankful. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and post something now!

I'm planning on posting my own testimonies, stories, devotions about thankfulness, and more so check back and participate every day if you like. Let's be thankful together.

Some Updates & Progress Report

In the process of launching this project, I decided I should make a few notes, explain a couple things, and ask a few questions.

First off, thank you to everyone who has become a fan on Facebook, followed on Twitter, checked out the site, and got the word out. I'm so excited about how this is all coming together!

Next, some people were trying to use the comments and were having some trouble with them so I thought I would take a minute to explain how they work. First, I enabled the ability to post as an anonymous user instead of logging into an existing account. This means you can now type your name, enter your comments, and be done.

I was hesitant to do this because I didn't know if spammers would try to use it too much, but I decided I didn't want anyone excluded for any reason. This brings me to a question.

Would you be interested in and willing to be a moderator for the comments? We should all be able to tell what's a real testimony and what's a spam message so if you would be willing, please use the contact form on the right of the page. I'm hoping to have 5 to 10 moderators so that we can keep the page clean and encouraging. Let me know!

One of the cool features of this comment box is that if you choose, you can click on the "To" in the box and log in to your Google account, Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, or whatever service you like best. Then it will bring up your name, and if you have a picture associated with that account, it will bring that up too.

Another great thing about this is that if you choose to connect to your Facebook or Twitter account, it will automatically publish your testimony to that account as well. That way you can send out your praise to the ends of the internet and back. :)

Last update and question. I now have a blog button that you can place on your site, blog, social media pages, etc. I see two great benefits to using it. First you'll see it and remember to come leave your testimony. Second, you'll let other people know about this encouraging resource. Here's all the info:

(the easiest way to grab it is to click inside the text box, hit "Ctrl+a" to select all the text then hit "Ctrl+c" to copy it. After that, you can add it wherever you like!)

If you don't want the button, maybe you'd consider adding a link to your page in some form or fashion.

There you go! That was probably more than enough to digest.

So if you have a testimony you want to share now, by all means go ahead! The official launch will be on Wednesday, but it's okay to praise Him early and often. Thank you again for all your help!

Coming Very Soon...

The Everyday Testimony Project will be launched very soon! It is simply an opportunity to share your story, show some gratitude, and develop an attitude of thankfulness.

The first official post will be up soon as well. This is just a marker of sorts to let you know what's coming. There will be posts on being thankful, what God says about thankfulness, what others say about this important subject, and lots and lots of testimonies.

For now, check out the site and become part by subscribing, following on twitter, becoming a fan on facebook, and telling your friends. Thanks and have a blessed day!
