I still laugh out loud when I think about this scene, and funny enough (now that’s a good pun) it’s applicable to an EVE online topic that is near and dear to my heart. Fleet Command.

Last night, the Gallente Militia found itself squaring off with a cruiser sized fleet from Rote Kappelle. Commanded by a veteran FC and comprised of a coalition of the willing, the cruiser sized Gallente fleet crashed head first into the organized and rehearsed Rote Kappelle gang on an acceleration gate inside of Nennemalia. Although the fight went to the Gallente Militia, the FC and his executive officer, were growing increasingly frustrated by the performance of individuals as the engagement progressed. Understandably, the veteran commanders were upset with voice communication discipline, the inability to account for point spreading, not focusing on the primary targets, and a few other issues that I cannot quite remember for the life of me. The aftermath of the victory, was a solid beating with the chain of command ala Jane Cobb.

I have to admit, I was torn by how I felt when the fight was over as an over whelming success for the Gallente. We had just won, so why, on earth, was this Fleet Commander berating his Soldiers for beating the odds. So I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that we, as leaders (Fleet Commanders) in this game of internet spaceships, are lacking two things: Expectation Management and a Fleet Brief.

I mentioned that the Gallente fleet (any fleet really) was comprised of a coalition of the willing. I neglected to mention what else the coalition was comprised of: Drunkards (my people!), tired Americans, really tired Europeans, frightened noobs, rushed noobs, veterans, and 8 different corporations. A fine bunch of rubens they are individually, however, collectively (humans in general) can present an unfathomable level of stupidity. When we face this, we need to keep a few things in mind BEFORE the cat herding even begins.

1) Skill levels are different

2) Attentiveness is mixed

3) Accents are hard to understand

4) Most are use to different leadership styles

5) We will not achieve fleet perfection… ever.

The first thing a Fleet Commander in EVE Online should realize when forming a fleet, especially in organizations like Red versus Blue or Faction Warfare, is that we cannot achieve perfection. We will never be able to spread points perfectly, and DPS will not always be applied fully to the primary target; Our fleets, although eager, are free thinkers and often confused in a game that can become overwhelming very quickly. Leaders, or Fleet Commanders in EVE Online need to practice expectation management.

Say it with me, “We cannot achieve perfection”.

Doesn’t that feel better? We can say that, and still make a difference in our group and in the individuals in our fleet (no matter how drunk, or how bitter) because what we have just done… is manage our expectations. After this epiphany, there is no real reason to get mad at a lack of perfection. There is no need to beat people with the chain of command. What we can now do, is focus on realistically improving our effectiveness with perpetual PUG coalition fleets… and we can do that by informing our fleet before the engagement even begins.

I often had pickup groups(PUGs) while deployed to Iraq. Sure, my Infantry Platoon was with me on every patrol; these Soldiers knew what to do and when to do it. I didn’t have to worry about them. What I did have to worry about, were the engineers that were now attached to me, the New Iraqi Army that was patrolling with me, the 20 screaming Peshmerga who didn’t like the Iraqi Army, and the “Colonel” that was visiting from Ballad that wanted to “see the area”. On just about every patrol, I had a mini coalition, that on paper, provided enablers that made my patrol better. The reality of situation was, I had a bunch of people who were untrained, and I couldn’t trust in one of the most harmful environments on earth.

Like EVE, every additional member I had tacked onto my group, created more and more risk for the people I could count on. I was able to mitigate a lot of this risk, by providing a patrol brief before every patrol. The brief was simple; we all introduced ourselves, who had what positions, the order of movement, actions on contact, communication, etc. The brief was short, meaningful, and it brought everyone onto the same page.

I took this lesson, and applied to my time Commanding in Red versus Blue. I can say up front, it paid dividends. Below is an example.

“Hello everyone, my name is Kyle Yanowski, that’s K-Y-L-E and I will be your Fleet Commander this evening. Ashterothi, A-S-H is in charge of Logistics, if you are in a LOGI ship, get into the LOGI squad and talk with ASHTEROTHI. Everyone else needs to get into ARMOR CRUISERS. I say again ARMOR CRUISERS. I am currently at an offgrid Tactical in Nennemalia, please undock and warp to Kyle, K-Y-L-E in Nennemalia so we can get our numbers, undock and warp to Kyle Yanowski in Nennemalia”

Notice the redundancy in my intial communication. There is a reason an EVE Fleet Commander says “Jump” three times, or “Align to” three times. Drunkards, noobs, accents, tired individuals… bad coms. We need to work redundancy into all of our communication. Now that everyone in our make believe fleet is on grid, our Fleet Commander continues with his “Fleet Brief”.

“Ok folks, if you are not currently on grid in the fleet, we are currently at an offgrid tactical in Nennemalia, that’s N-E-N-N. You have 3 minutes to warp to Kyle Yanowski, warp to K-Y-L-E in NENN, you have 3 minutes before we get underway. Everyone else, stop fucking around and listen up. This is a short, 3 minute fleet brief. I’m am Kyle Yanowski, I am your Fleet Commander. Ashterothi is in charge of Logistics. Marcel Devereax is my secondary target caller. The way we will call targets is as follows. I will call the first three letters of the targets name, followed by the ship type. It will sound something like this. “K-Y-L in the Vexor is your primary, K-Y-L in the VEXOR is your primary (calling targets like this, is piercing for thick accents, drunkards, and tired folks alike). Sort your overviews by alphabetically. I say again, sort your overviews alphabetically.”

See how I quickly, and distinctly demonstrated the chain of command, and gave an example of target calling. Now there are no surprises for our capsuleers to contend with once the fight starts. I should also reiterate how important it is to spell out the first three letters of the name, and then the ship type. We need to mitigate as much confusion as possible when calling targets, jumping gates, etc. Our Fleet commander continues:

“Upon contact, we are going to spread our points. We are going to spread points alphabetically. That means if your name starts with K. You will need to point an opponent that starts with K. If there is no opponent with a first name that starts with K, go to the next letter nearest your name. Pay attention if your would be target is pointed. If the target is pointed already, move on to the next target. Are there any questions?”

This example of point spreading is just a technique. It may not be the end all be all, but the point is, it is something. We are taking what would be the assumption that the pick up fleet knows how to spread points, and instead, briefing very clearly, a“way” to go about spreading points on contact. The end state of whatever technique you pick, is to inform your fleet before you are busy with more critical commands.

I could go on, but I feel that you, the reader, can get the idea. Pick what you think is important, based on how you envision the battle going down. Never assume that your pickup fleet knows what to do in the absence of orders, because frankly, even professional military units do not know what to in the absence of orders, at least, not without delegated leadership (and that is another topic later on down the road). Three minutes spent bringing your fleet onto the page you are reading from, will pay dividends later in the fight. We owe it to our pilots to inform them. Of course, you could always go the way of Jane Cobb and grab the chain of command, and beat your fleet members into the ground until they understand who is in charge… but I do not think that worked out too well for Jane.

Good podcast, I just discovered it. I will listen to more. One suggestion though is to even out the loudness with dynamic range compression. This levels out the loudness throughout the entire podcast, toning down the loud parts and raising up the quiet parts. This makes for a better listening experience. Any audio editing software will have this feature (even Audacity which is free and widely used).

Gentlemen,

First, thank you for the podcast.  It’s enjoyable, accessible to all manner of Eve pilot, and light-hearted.

I write to take exception to the idea that “nothing is going on in low sec”.

As a member of Brave Newbies, based out of Rahadalon in Low Sec, I can attest that Low Sec is full of action, fun, and lots of good fights.

If your idea of Low Sec is the Rancer pirate-camp-fest, or the faction warfare plex fest only, you are mistaken.

We are having so much fun in low sec doing everything from blobfests to arranged frig fights to bait procurers & Battle badgers to POS bash/fights to wormhole invasions to running sites/missions, there is always something to do.

There’s so much going on in Low Sec that the bigger null sec alliance pilots are headed here, because they know there will be good fights and not endless empty systems, as it appears null sec is comprised of.  We see lots of fleets from Provi, Snigg, TEST, and others coming to us, looking for fights, since they know we will fight and are unlikely to hotdrop them with Le Capitals.

We get our share of enemy capital ships showing up and while we can’t really blap them quickly at this time, we have a blast keeping them pinned down.  Occasionally we even get to scoop a delicious fighter drone when the dock up too quickly.

Get out of the null sec echo chamber and come take a look at what Low Sec can be.

I’m trying something new as I rekindle my affection for this game.  My character hit 3 years old on May 2nd and boy am I feeling it.  Wow, what a three years it’s been.  In this episode I cover a few dev blogs listed below.  I then go on an epic journey on the Sisi server.  Join me as a test out the new probing system, hunt for the new Clone NPC’s and try my luck with the new sites.

Odyssey is upon us, and with it, the hope of a revived low sec industry. Low sec, currently, is the most dangerous place for industry. Where HISEC has Concord, and NULLSEC has coalitions and vast swathes of empty buffer space, LOWSEC has pirates, neutrals, and militias constantly searching for the easy mining target and/or the proverbial good fight. The changes in odyssey, namely the resource redistribution, are providing a recognizable carrot on a stick to entice the normal HISEC miner to indulge in an activity that allows for slightly higher profits; but it is not enough.

There is not a single chance that the exploration and resource changes will be enough to charm New Eden industrialists out of HISEC and into the asteroid (and target) rich environment of LOWSEC. It is simply too easy to recognize a mining target on D-scan, and warp to the target; this is just the individual miner in a Venture, I don’t believe I have ever seen a LOWSEC mining op with more than one barge or exhumer in LOWSEC. Ever. And that’s a shame.

So here is a modest proposal. Introduce an active module that creates a bubble of D-scan interference. Those on the outside cannot see (on D-scan) what is inside the bubble, likewise, those that arewithin the bubble cannot see outside of the bubble (The miners would have to rely on a scout within their Mining Operation to provide early warning).  By introducing this module, we create an added layer of perceived protection for miners within LOWSEC, and possibly, a resurgence of mining operations in the most dangerous areas of New Eden.

I’m curious, miners, I have two questions. Do you plan on moving yourself and / or your corporation into LOWSEC for mining operations? If not, would a D-Scan disruption module be enough to entice you to come into LOWSEC?

Dear CCP,

I am writing to you regarding your large scale massively multiplayer online game called EVE Online, which I have been playing since 18th June 2006 on my main and since 14th June 2007 on my trading character. Recently, I haven’t been enjoying the game as I once did, this has been going on a while but then you introduced varies new features which kept me saying to myself perhaps this will turn it around. So I kept on renewing and trying new things out, including null sec, wormholes, exploration, mission running (boring by the way), mining (even worse) and recently factional warfare (well done on making a broken system even worse there with your recent patch). I was going to keep playing until I got a new computer in June and hope the improvement of graphic settings would keep me interested, but unfortunately the final nail was driven into my EVE coffin on the 19th April 2013.

What happen that day should of just been my usual end of week trading, where I go and collect various bits that have been made during the week (as I work full time) and return to Jita to sell them. On the return journey I decided to leave autopilot on to get me the last couple of jumps to Jita while I went to go make myself some dinner. When I came back I found myself docked, but then I noticed it wasn’t Jita and not in my ship. I had been in fact killed and podded in Ikuchi at 1.0 system one jump away from Jita. Then reason I am upset about this event is that it was my Rhea containing over a billion isks worth of items, a total loss in the region of 8 billion isk.

After I talked to one of the people that killed me I discovered that my ship had been stuck on the gate because Jita has reached it population cap (implemented by you because your server lacks the capacity to deal with the demand) and that Goonies, TEST and the rest had taken advantage of the situation to start popping stuck ships. This in my view make the responsibility lie in CCP for the various reasons:

1.         Lack of capacity in Jita causing a large amount of ships (likely on autopilot) containing vast wealth to be stuck on the gates around the system.

2.         The lack of effect of CONCORD in destroying large criminal fleets in a 1.0 system – which in make no sense when taking into account the supposed size and reasons for CONCORD in the story line and the fact it is in the Caldari states back yard.

As a result I raised a petition for reimbursement of my loss, which I was the sequentially told, was effectively “tough luck – games working fine”. As a result I have effectively lost hundreds of pounds in wasted subscription fees and thousands of hours of my life over 6 years. As I mentioned earlier this had driven the final nail in the coffin of my EVE life, which is a shame as when I started out in the game although it was far from perfect I had high hopes for the game.

Responses to generic comments:

1. No you can’t have my stuff it dies with me.

2. I barely ever come on the forums, I pay to play a game, not to read posts. It shouldn’t be a requirement of a game to have to trawl through 100s of meaningless posts (ironic hey?) just in case a bunch of player decide to take the **** of a less than adequate punishment system

3. Fair enough, people could get enough ships during a normal day to pop ships, but as you said it would require 15 tier BS, which cost allot more than the contents of my ship, if CONCORD killed every player after the event before they could kill another, then they would have shot in the first place. I full support the mechanic of suicide ganking but I feel after the guy gets killed everyone who shot him should die before they can shoot another guy, otherwise it just encourages this behavior every day, which in my view is not the intended mechanic of the game. << THATS THE POINT, It i had follow around with 8 billion in the cargo hold then fair game, because the number of ships vs the reward is worth it, but it was only a billion which would have required more ships than that to kill me than the cargo’s worth if they hadn’t been able to kill anything else. Simply put CONCORD is working as I believe it was intended and that my gripe.

4. My main was a member of ELF for 18+months, I left due to obtaining a engineering job which meant I could not play the hours i used to, I am not just some player who sits in high sec, this was a trading alt to support my pvp main. As I mentioned I have spent allot of time in different areas of EVE my main it all its life has only spent 9 months in high sec.

So many things happening in EVE.  The ramp up to FanFest, the end of the CSM elections, the announcement of Odyssey and all the proposed features that are in the works.  While we did revisit the Waggro topic (and there is 100 million ISK on the line), it turned out to be a small little chunk of the ‘cast.  We did read some player submissions and we hope you like them.

We are without Zao this time around so the Tao of Zao will be put off until the next recording but we have more than enough to keep you entertained in this episode!  Kyle, Random and Zealot are the engineers of this train wreck!

By pure coincidence, as we were recording, the final ballot was posted in preparation for the election starting the following day. We discussed who got through to the final ballot and with how many votes. Myself and Poetic argued the relevant merits of tactical voting in an STV scenario. And Fozzie explains to us how STV actually works properly.

PLEX/Plex:  (contextual)

• One: Pilot EXtension License. Pilots by Pilot EXtension Licenses to which allow them to stay flying in the glorious galaxy of New Eden for a period of 30 days. This options can be used to pay for this game instead of giving CCP your local currency on a monthly basis.
• Two:  Abbreviation for “complex.” Capsuleers will occasionally run complexes and shoot down pirates to make money.

The separate uses of Plex can be confusing for new players. Example: I ran a ‘plex to pay for PLEX.

This episode is dedicated to Rhavas and Xavier Kaine.  It’s not often people ask things of me, but then they do ask nicely I try my best to deliver.  Just because these two asked nicely, here is my second CSM 8 panel three days early.

I’m starting to enjoy these shows.  They are pretty simple and straight forward.  These candidates deliver insightful answers and I didn’t question their sincerity as much as I thought I would.  I’ll warn you up front Roc is a card, but that’s just Roc. Unforgiven Storm was refreshingly multidimensional for an industrial candidate. James gave me a little surprise in the episode & did his homework, but I’ll let you discover that for yourself.  Ripard was the first person I voted for CSM.  I was going to vote for someone else, but I heard him on a Lost in Eve debate and I changed my mind right there.  It was an honor to have him on the show. Oh the nostalgia.

• Have been on several Dropbear roams in the past couple of weeks.  I was proud to include a brand new corp recruit )Adarys Aideron) into lasts night roam.  Less than an hour in the corp and the fellow was flying as a tacklebro and what a night.  We found ourselves face to face with a 65+ Russian Oracle fleet and Adarys quickly found himself back in NOL.
• I tried participating in the Caldari Prime Live event and was denied.  I spent the night before moving ships into the system and alas!  System full please try again later.

• 3/21/2013: Small POS Shoot Fleet of Fail.  We wandered around fountain for 30 minutes because the FC listened to the fleet instead of GARPA.

Fleet Commander (aka “FC” ) – This individual takes it upon them self to organize, administer, and command a group of pilots in Eve. Tasks include: ship selection, route plans, roles selection, target broadcasting, and fleet command decisions. They must be good at delegation, quick decision making, multitasking, as any delay could cause a fleet whelp.

There is a saying among many Eve pilots: “The FC is always Right, even when he/she is not.” Arguing with the FC during an op on comms can result in you losing your ship or even getting kicked from your corp/alliance! Don’t be “that guy”.

Welcome to Retribution 1.1 and may this episode of Voices keep you occupied during downtime.  DJ Wiggles joins me this week for a look inside at Eve Radio as well as a long and rather troll-ish discussion about Retribution patch notes.  How’s that for hot and fresh content?      When fighting blobs I personally as an FC like to have separate tabs on my overview so I can sort and find dangerous targets easily without having to fumble through my overview. Being able to do so makes my life easier and more effective at FCing. Ships like recons or logistics are important to spot out right away. Taking out these ships can free your fleet from EWAR or take away the enemy fleets ability to repair and spotting these ships as soon as possible in a fight can mean winning and losing.

     Here is the dilemma. As of right now in EVE recons and logistics have their own class, according to overview mechanics, and are easily sorted into their own tab. The problem is right now all t1 cruisers are classed as cruisers. So there is no way to sort t1 logi or recon like hulls into a tab to make them easy to find. So when an FC fights a cruiser blob the only way to make it easier to find dangerous or important targets is pretty much sorting his overview by type.

     My hope is that CCP Devs or CSM members hear my plea to fix this. Please make classes for these t1 cruiser hulls so that they can be sorted in overviews making FCs lives easier. Yes this seems like a minor thing, but it will make life easier for FCs everywhere.

Topics of discussion include CCP reorganisation, POSes, the Stakeholder process (there’s a great video on this which Fozzie recommends watching during the record here), CSM8 including the candidates and potential voting systems, CSM anonymity, null sec, ship rebalancing, supercaps and the wardec system amongst a whole heap of other stuff.

I want to thank all three guests for being so open and forthright leading to some very interesting back and forth discussion. We also had some pretty major internet issues on my end which led to the recording being rescheduled and despite this, the guys all gave up almost three hours of their spare time. Indeed, Fozzie was up to 1:30am. The sound quality isn’t quite what I would have liked – we had to switch from Skype to TeamSpeak halfway through recording because of dropouts – but I think the call is clear enough to understand the conversation.
