There have been a lot of major milestones throughout history that warrant mentioning. The adventure starts in the year 1936.

1936- Konrad Zuse invented the Z1 Computer. This was the first computer that was freely programmable.
1942- John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry created the ABC Computer.
1944- John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly came up with the idea for the ENIAC 1 computer. It was the first real scenario where vacuum tubes were used.
1948- Frederic Williams and Tom Kilburn invented the Manchester Baby Computer and the Williams Tube.
1951-John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly create the first UNIVAC Computer
1962-Steve Russell and MIT invent the Spacewar Computer Game, which was the very first functional computer game on record
1973-Robert Metcalfe and Xerox combined talents and ushered in a new era with the advent of Ethernet Computer Networking.
1984-Apple invented the Macintosh Computer. It was the first affordable home computer and created an entirely new revolution in desk top computing.

As you can see, the case for who invented the first computer is a hard one to solve. The one thing that can't be debated is the fact that computers have opened doors to a huge number of jobs and careers while changing the very way the world does business.

If you like the idea of working with computers, developing and managing business computer applications, databases and networks, why not consider making your major "Computer Information Science" at Everest University Online, a division of Everest University.

The benefit of an online college degree speaks for itself. Distance learning can enable adult students in ways that no other form of higher education has managed to match. Online degree programs can offer 24/7 accessibility, self-pacing curriculum, and the interactive technology that can keep a student interested and highly engaged.

The Challenge of Getting an Online Degree is not to be Taken Lightly

As convenient as they may sound, most online degree programs are challenging and demanding and require students to work steadily towards completing their degree within a particular timeframe. Student who possess a serious degree of self-motivation are usually those who do best.

An Online Degree in Today's World is Legit

The legitimacy of getting an online education has been indirectly reinforced by the many reputable colleges and universities that have built dependable and accredited distance learning models.

The great news is that higher education sources are placing emphasis on the fact there is little division in the learning outcomes of online students and those who opt to choose traditional curriculums.

Getting a Degree Online has Truly come of Age

Online education is actually in the same academic territory as institutions made of brick and mortar, and severing any real ties to the world of illegitimate degree mills.

Almost overnight, virtual schools such as Everest University-Online have come of age and are almost available to anyone who wants to purse higher learning at their own convenience.

•	Apple iPhone 3G S Goes on Sale This Week. The highly anticipated iPhone 3G S will be released this week by Apple. Cosmetically no different from the current 3G, this newest model is reportedly up to two times faster processing downloads (The “S” stands for “Speed”), has a larger storage capacity and a better camera. But perhaps its most valuable new feature is that it allows users to cut-and-paste content—including copy, graphics and links—from document-to-document or from Web site to document (such as an email). Oh, there’s also a new built-in compass in case you get lost. Initially, Apple was only going to offer minimal discounts to current 3G owners who weren’t currently “upgrade eligible,” but a flood of protests caused the company to relent and offer fully discounted $199/$299 pricing (depending on storage capacity) to any 3G owner whose current contract expires in June, July, August or September of this year. Apple stores nationwide are scheduled to open as early as 7:00 a.m. to deal with the expected demand.

•	Prepare Yourself for “Augmented Reality.” As if Virtual Reality wasn’t enough, out of Western Europe comes the newest things we didn’t know we really needed: “Augmented Reality.” Created by a company called Layar and designed to work with the new iPhone 3G S, “Augmented Reality” allows a user to view a location through an iPhone’s camera and then, using sophisticated GPS technology, view information about what’s being looked at by a variety of on-screen pop-ups. Information can include historical or other tourist-centric information about a site, real estate values and availability, or directions to the nearest bars, clubs, restaurants or ATM. The app is currently being tested in Netherlands and is expected to come to ]the USA within a year.

•	IBM’s $100 Million Mobile Investment. Think mobile communication is still too slow, awkward and unreliable? IBM thinks so, too, which is why it’s reportedly investing approximately $100 million over the next five years in research aimed at improving everything from cell phone communications to wireless Internet. Part of its investment will be focused on finding ways to bring mobile communication to the estimated 83 percent of the world’s population that still cannot access the World Wide Web.

•	Bing is Boost to Microsoft. Microsoft’s new Bing search engine appears to be a hit. Since its release earlier this month, use of the new engine has been rising steadily—as has Microsoft’s stock value. Microsoft believes so strongly in its new service that it’s reportedly spending between $80 million and $100 million in advertising to support it. Meanwhile, the world’s number-one search engine, Google, is not taking this new competition lightly. The New York Post has reported that Google co-founder Sergey Brin is now working closely with his top engineers to upgrade and hopefully surpass Bing’s performance.
Increasingly, colleges and even public elementary and high schools are exploring the possibility of digitizing their textbooks and putting them online.

It’s a revolutionary concept with both fans and detractors.

On the plus side, online textbook supporters argue:

• Going online will reduce costs. Currently, college students can pay up to $150 for a single textbook. (Some studies show textbooks account for an average 25% of tuition costs.) California, which is currently facing a $24.3 billion deficit, spends about $350 million every year on new textbooks for its public schools. Going digital could be a money-saver for both governments and individual students.

• Going online will provide needed flexibility. Hardcopy textbooks force instructors to teach information in the way the books present it. Digitizing texts will allow teachers to cut, paste, rearrange and modify learning materials to better meet their classroom objectives and individual teaching styles.

• Going online will keep information current. One reason states have to constantly buy next(new?) textbooks is because new information is always being added. (This is particularly true of textbooks that deal with history, politics, science and other rapidly evolving subjects.) Digital textbooks could be updated or modified as needed at relatively little cost.

•	Going online will improve portability. Textbooks are heavy, clumsy, and if carried improperly, can lead to back strain and even long-term spinal problems. Digital texts can be carried on a single laptop computer or Kindle-like playback device.

Opponents to online textbooks argue that they will further divide rich from poor, that many families don’t have the money to buy laptop computers or even Kindle-like e-book readers. To overcome this problem, school districts will probably have to provide such devices to their needier students, thus seriously cutting away at any potential cost savings.

Is there an online textbook in your future? If the rapid digitization of music, movies and newspapers is any indication, the real question is not if, but when. Already many colleges are offering “open textbooks” for student download, and by the middle of the next decade, traditional hardbound textbooks may have gone the way of the vinyl record album and VHS videotape.

On June 12, at exactly 12:01 a.m., American television broadcasting goes 100% digital. At that moment, any TV set still receiving traditional analog signals will go dark.

If you have an analog TV that’s hooked up to a satellite or cable TV system, you have nothing to worry about. You will continue to receive pictures and sound just as you always have. Likewise, if you have purchased and hooked your older set up to a digital converter box, you’re fine. The digital signals will be converted into analog signals your older set can understand.

However, if you, like millions of Americans, are planning to abandon your old analog TV in favor of a digital one, you face the question of what to do with your old set.

TVs Banned from Landfills

In most parts of the United States and Canada, you can’t just throw your old TV away. Televisions (and other electronics) contain lead and other toxic chemicals that are banned from most area landfills. As a result, many communities require people to take unwanted TVs and other electronic products like computers, radios, monitors and telephones to local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facilities for disposal. (Use your preferred search engine to do an online search for the HHW facility closest to you.)

Recycle Your Old Television

You can also recycle your old televisions. Although you may have seen news reports about old TVs being “dumped” in China, India and Third World countries where they pose serious health hazards to local populations, there are many reputable waste companies in the U.S. that can safely and responsibly recycle 100% of a TV’s components, including its hard plastic shell and CRT glass.

For a list of certified electronics recycling companies and how to contact them, visit your TV manufacturer’s website. Most have information and links to companies who can safely recycle your old set—and let you enjoy a clear conscience.

The first step in setting up your site is to officially register your domain name, the “www” address people will use to find you.

It’s not as difficult—or as expensive—as you may think. Here are the steps to follow to acquire your own domain:

Think of the name you’d like to use. Be warned: There are literally tens of millions of websites already registered worldwide (No one knows the exact number), so some of the “obvious” choices may not be available. Have alternatives ready. Be as creative and unusual as possible, yet try to have the name somehow relate to your site’s subject. And understand you can use punctuation to create a unique domain when the name you’d prefer is already taken. (For example, “I Love Dachshunds” may not be available, but “I-Love-Dachshunds” might.)

Choose an online registration site. There are dozens of them on the Internet. In your favorite search engine (e.g., Google, Yahoo, etc.), search for “Domain Registration,” pull up some of the top pages listed and compare their prices.

Use the tools provided to search for the name you’d like for yourself. If it’s available, great! If not, try the variations described in Step 1. You may also try a suffix other than .com (commercial), such as .net (network), .biz (business) or .tv (normally for TV shows, but available to individuals as well).

Once the name you’ve chosen is approved, fill out the rest of the application.

Pay the filing fee as directed by the registration site.

And that’s it! You now have a domain name all your own!

However, this year, 2009, marks the real 15th anniversary of the Web––at least the Web as most people know it. That’s because it has now been 15 years since the release of the first Netscape Navigator Web browser, the invention that made the Web accessible to the average computer user.

A Bit of History

Many people think the Internet is a fairly recent invention, but its roots actually date all the way back to the early 1960s. It was the height of the Cold War, and the Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) needed a way for computers at major universities to communicate with each other. The “ARPANET” solution they developed was very technical, completely text-based and unavailable to the general public.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, private companies began to use ARPANET-like technologies to offer computer timesharing services to individuals. By the mid-1980s, companies like CompuServe, Prodigy and America Online began to offer content-driven services––including news, weather, special interest information, email, etc.––to paying customers. But none of these services could interact with one another. (Example: If you subscribed to AOL, you could only send email to other AOL customers.)

Then, in 1991, two very important things happened. First was the release of “Gopher,” a technology that could quickly and (relatively) easily access files from another linked computer anywhere in the world. The second––and perhaps most important––event was the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW), developed by Tim Berners-Lee of CERN, a Swiss-based particle physics laboratory. The “Web” provided the world with a single, expandable infrastructure that both information suppliers and users could easily access.

The “Information Superhighway” was finally in place. Now all people needed was a vehicle on which to drive it.

The Modern “Web” is Born

For the next two years, computer users struggled to access the growing number of websites popping up on the Internet. And then, in 1994, a new start-up company called Mosaic released the Netscape Navigator, a user-friendly “Web Browser” that allowed users to easily connect to any site on the World Wide Web. Unlike past technologies, Netscape could easily handle graphics as well as text, and it displayed information the same way no matter what kind of system the user was on. Sold as a stand-alone program, Netscape Navigator quickly had a market share estimated at close to 90%!

The Death of Netscape

Today, Netscape Navigator is virtually unknown. Microsoft all but killed it in the mid-1990s by bundling its own Web browser, Internet Explorer, with its software, basically distributing it for free.  It's now estimated that only 1% of Web uses now use Netscape under that brand name.

But while Netscape may be forgotten, it’s not gone. It lives on in the form of the Mozilla Firefox browser, which has built on Netscape’s technology.

In addition to the nuts-and-bolts of IT, here are some of the social skills every IT student should work on:

Listening. It’s common for IT “geeks” to be eager to jump right into a job and complete it to their own satisfaction. But in the business world, you need to first listen to your clients/managers to truly understand the assignment you’re being given. In particular, listen carefully to pin down such key issues as your boss’ expectations and when exactly you’re supposed to complete specific work assignments.

Cooperation. At first, the idea of being a “team player” when you’re often by yourself sitting at a keyboard may seem a bit strange. But when you’re working on large, complex assignments, you’ll often be required to be part of a team. This usually means working during agreed-upon hours, attending meetings, sharing information and, just as important, sharing credit.

Responsiveness. Nothing drives a manager crazier than an employee who does not respond to communications. To keep things running smoothly, always respond immediately to emails, even if it’s just a quick note to say, “Message received,” “I understand” or “Thanks!” Just as important is to return missed phone calls promptly, especially when you’re being asked to supply job-related information.

Being able to handle criticism. No one likes to be criticized, but criticism is unavoidable in a professional environment. To handle criticism successfully, look at it as an opportunity for improvement. When you’re criticized by a manager, don’t fight back or dismiss the comments as untrue; instead, ask for specifics about how you failed to meet expectations and what you can do to perform better next time. When you ask for specifics, you will often find that your boss’ complaints aren’t nearly as serious or difficult to fix as you first thought.

Maintaining a positive attitude. Perhaps the one thing that can help you in your IT career more than anything else is having a positive attitude. This means starting your morning looking upbeat and eager to get to work. (Even if you have to fake it!) It means being happy to take on new responsibilities and offering ideas even before you’re asked.   It means believing in yourself, in your abilities and the value of the work you are doing.

Remember, people like to work with people they like. In other words, if you’re the kind of person who gets along well with others, who is helpful, responsive and not likely to get into fights with managers or co-workers, your chances of moving ahead in the IT world are much higher than they’d be with just superior technical skills alone.
