Is an MBA worth it? Absolutely, according to the results of a recent survey.

The Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), an international nonprofit organization of business schools, regularly polls business school graduates on a number of key topics. According to the results of its 2014 survey, a whopping 94 percent of graduates who hold a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) say their degree was worth the time, money and effort they invested to earn it.*

This figure on MBA satisfaction represents responses from 20,704 alumni from 132 business schools who graduated between 1959 and 2013.

Another interesting survey result: Nearly half of MBA graduates used their degrees to start their own businesses. In the survey, 45 percent of graduates from the classes of 2010-2013 said they immediately went into business for themselves, compared to just 7 percent of entrepreneurs who graduated before 1990.

You don’t have to watch the latest sci-fi police drama to see cops using advanced technology to catch criminals. Big city police forces are already using a variety of computer-based weapons to identify and capture bad guys. And a lot of these technologies looks like something straight out of a Hollywood movie.

Here are just some of the crime-fighting technologies now finding its way into the mean streets of our larger cities.

Throwable Robot Cameras

These are small, lightweight cameras fitting inside motorized tubes that operators steer via remote control. When police want to look into a room, in a basement or up a staircase without exposing themselves to possible hostile fire, they just toss the camera into the suspect area and drive it around like a little RC model car, viewing the results on a handheld monitor.

Flying Drones

The military and Amazon.com aren’t the only ones using these little remote-controlled flying platforms. Several major police forces now use drones to patrol high crime areas, rush to the scenes of accidents, chase suspect vehicles, and discreetly get into tight spaces without warning suspects of their approach. Unlike their counterparts in Iraq and Afghanistan, police drones have yet to be used as flying weapons platforms. But just give it time.

Gunshot Detection Systems (GDS)

In neighborhoods infamous for gang violence, police are installing computerized noise sensors that automatically triangulate the source of gunshots when they occur. These systems allow police to respond immediately when gunshots are fired, knowing exactly where and when the shots were fired.

Tablet Computers

Many police departments are using tablet computers to record witness statements, file reports, photograph evidence, view area maps, and even sketch crime scenes. In fact, tablet computers now allow police to do just about anything they can do at their desks, plus a lot more. (When things are slow, the cops can even use the tablet to play Solitaire.)

GPS Vehicle Pursuit Darts

High-speed chases may make for great television, but they pose dangers to motorists and pedestrians on the ground. In high traffic areas, police sometimes prefer to track suspect vehicles using helicopters, but even these can prove problematic when suspects drive into tunnels or onto streets sheltered by thick foliage. For some police departments, the solution is a high-tech dart that emits a GPS signal. During a chase, a police car will approach the suspect vehicle from behind and fire the dart via a grill-mounted compressed air gun. The dart affixes itself to the vehicle’s trunk or fender. The police can then back off and safely track the suspect by the signal the dart broadcasts.

Panoramic HD Cameras

A new generation of highly sensitive computerized cameras allows forensics specialist to record an entire crime scene from side to side and top to bottom, creating a data-rich file that specialists can later review in depth back at the police lab. Using special electronic filters and data-mining software, investigators can use these HD files to reveal hidden clues and compare patterns to previous crimes in hopes of identifying — and ultimately capturing — suspects.

There are a number of ways you can stay motivated and focused in an online school. Searching for a program? Try Everest University Online.

If you’re just getting started at choosing an online program and you’re not sure which one’s the best fit for your career goals, contact Everest University Online today. Get the facts on class start dates and financial aid that is available for those who qualify.

Once you’ve become an online student, you may find the whole experience a bit challenging. Here are a few simple tips that can help inspire you to stay motivated and complete your program.

Choose a College Program That Works for You

Doing what you love and earning a living at it can be a great thing. Few people want to be stuck in a job that goes nowhere. As a result, many people choose to find an education pursuit. Whatever online college program you choose, make sure it can help prepare you for a career that fits you.

Set Limitations on Your Study Time

If you’re tired, study time can sometimes feel overwhelming. Understand your limitations. What’s the best study time for you? Is it in the morning, afternoon or evening? How long should you study during each session? The more you understand your limitations, the more likely you’ll have sufficient energy to put into your study time.

Rid Yourself of Distractions

It’s easy enough to get distracted by most anything when studying, from your cat’s meow to the sound of an old car backfiring outside. Remove the cat or close the window. The good thing is a number of distractions can be dealt with by simply removing them from hearing range or your line of sight.

Another good way to rid yourself of distractions is to set reasonable time-outs. Take a short break every time you complete a portion of your assignment. You may even feel refreshed after a short interval. A rest cycle can help free you from the distraction of wondering if it’s time for a break.

Stay Organized

Being organized can be a tremendous help and motivator in helping complete your studies too. Quite often, it’s the things around us that invade our space and distract us. Keep in mind too that many people have their own idea of what it means to be organized.

Generally speaking, staying organized means keeping your favorite items in the same place, whether a pen, personal coffee cup or pillow. Being organized can help you concentrate better. And one main objective of good concentration is to achieve higher grades.

Everest University Online, a division of Everest College, offers online degree programs for the fields of accounting, business, applied management, computer information science, criminal justice, criminal investigations and paralegal.

Have you been laid off recently? If so, you may want to take a look at what an online education has to offer. Learn more.

If you’ve just been laid off, you may have a strong incentive to get right back into the workforce for one of the obvious reasons: bills. Or, you may decide to give yourself a few days of unrestricted leisure time. Many choose to dive right back into the job market so that life can quickly return to normal. And others choose to advance through additional education. Here are few questions to help you plan your next move.

Did you love your last job? Be totally honest with yourself. If you loved your last job, you may be ready to find a job replacement that is as close to your old job as possible. You may even have the experience and desire to start your own company. If so, check with your state to see if there are programs in place for entrepreneurs.

What would your dream job be? If you’re laid off, your instincts may be screaming for you to be practical and find a job that can keep you afloat. This, of course, can be a good plan, but it doesn’t mean you have to stop thinking of ways to make money by doing what you love.

Is it time to go back to school? Your dream job may require training beyond what you already possess. The good news is that attending a college or university may be easier now than it has ever been, especially if it’s an online university.

Online learning can be a valuable learning experience, whether you’re taking a single course or pursuing your degree. Many students, when asked about why they chose to learn online responded, “Because it’s convenient.”

Others answered that the benefits of taking an online course go beyond mere convenience. Here are some additional popular reasons to choose online learning:

You get to attend class anytime you choose and anywhere you want as long as you have Internet access.

You can access your course materials 24/7.

You can network with a wide range of people from all over the country, even the world.

You can to learn at your own pace. You can study when you want.

There are four things you should consider before applying for a job. Learn more and consider how an education can help advance your career.

If you’re in the market for a new job, just make sure before applying that your online presence is as ready for an interview as you are. Employers will often look at a person’s online presence before they invite that person in for an interview. Your goal is to make sure that what they see online will support their impression of you as a viable job candidate.

Keep Your LinkedIn Profile Updated

When is the last time you visited your LinkedIn profile? It may be time to make some changes if it’s been awhile. Revisit your LinkedIn summary and update your career objective. Get the endorsements from colleagues that will make an impact in talent-search queries. Post an up-to-date professional picture.

Google Yourself

The odds are that a potential employer is going to Google you. You should do the same. The top Google results are a reflection of your personality and work. The results will most likely contain links to your accounts, like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. If your search returns negative results, you may want to consider using a service like Reputation Changer. This service may be able to remove negative references so that your online presence is positive and reflects your current abilities and skills. Use your best judgment to determine if this is a company you’d like to do business with.

Keep Your Personal Life Private

Millions of people choose to write personal blogs, open an account with Instagram or some other social media venue. Just keep in mind that your life can become an open book for anyone looking to learn more about you. If you’re on any sites not related to your profession, choose anonymous handles and private security settings. You have every right to be part of the social media universe. Just make sure that where you choose to spend time on the Internet is a positive reflection of you.

Advance Your Education

Everest University Online, a division of Everest University, offers career-oriented degree programs for a variety of popular career fields. Pursue an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree on your own schedule. You can take classes where and when you choose.

College interviews can be scary. Say the wrong thing, appear too shy or too eager or, worse yet, respond to your interviewer’s questions with a blank deer-in-the-headlights stare and you could derail your entire future. The stakes are so high that some high schoolers hire professional coaches just to prepare them for their academic auditions. And even then, when demand at a school is high and available positions are few, a positive outcome is never guaranteed.

Fortunately, performance anxiety is not something you have to worry about when interviewing with Everest University Online, a division of Everest University.

If you are interested in earning an associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree from Everest University Online, you will be asked to interview with an admissions representative, usually by telephone. These interviews aren’t designed to select the top candidates but to help school representatives better determine how Everest can best service each applicant. They also provide students the chance to interview Everest, to learn more about each degree program and to better understand how online education works.

Here’s how to prepare for the interview so you’ll get the most from the experience.

1) Be ready to discuss your academic history, particularly whether or not you have earned your high school diploma. If you have not yet earned your diploma, discuss any plans you have to complete high school or earn a GED.

2) Be prepared to talk about any extracurricular activities you participated in as well as hobbies, volunteer work or other topics that reveal your personal passions. Any past employment, especially military service, is also highly relevant.

3) Think about your personal and professional goals, both long term and short term. Where do you see yourself in five years? In 10 years? What are your priorities? Money? Personal satisfaction? Working by yourself? Being part of a team? Personal achievement or helping others?

4) Have you already picked out a program to study? If so, ask all the questions you want about it. Who are the instructors? What are their backgrounds? What topics will be covered? How long will the program take to complete? How many hours a day per week will have to commit to school? How will progress be evaluated?

5) If you don’t have a clear idea of what subject you want to pursue, be ready to discuss that, too. Your Everest admissions representative can help you sift through your various options and select a subject that best meets your interest and ambitions.

6) Have you ever taken online classes before? If not, you probably will have plenty of questions about how that works. Are all lectures pre-recorded or are some live? Will I be interacting with other students? If so, how? Will I be able to communicate with my instructors and ask questions? If so, how? Make a list of all the things you’re unsure about so you can bring them up during the interview.

7) Before the interview, make sure you know the type of computer you own, including its operating system, so you can confirm it will be compatible with Everest’s online system.

8) You’ll probably also want to ask about student financing options, as well as any grant or scholarship opportunities that may be able.

When you’re ready, relax and have fun. Your Everest interview is meant to be a pleasurable experience, not to put you on the spot. It’s a chance for Everest to learn about you, and for you to learn about Everest. Make the most of it.

Online students

Online students come in all types. Some are male. Some are female. Some are fresh out of high school, and others are experienced adults. Some have full-time jobs while others are family caretakers.

While no two online students are alike, the successful ones tend to share five key qualities. If you see these qualities in yourself, you may have what it takes to earn your degree online.

1. Discipline. Successful online students take their studies seriously. They give themselves the time they need to attend classes, read study materials and complete their assignments. They create weekly schedules and then stick to them. This kind of discipline comes easy to some people, but for many others, it’s a struggle. There’s no shortage of distractions in today’s world, and “cheating” on a study routine can be all too easy. But students who succeed accept this challenge, and they give up short-term pleasures for what they hope will be long-term gains.

2. Flexibility. Illness, unexpected visitors, household emergencies and vacations — all kinds of things can disrupt even the best designed schedules. Successful students are disciplined, but they’re also flexible enough to “roll with the punches” and adapt themselves to changing circumstances. But being flexible doesn’t mean letting your studies slide. It does mean readjusting your schedule to make sure the important things get done first.

3. Curiosity. Successful students are usually genuinely interested in their subject matter, often so interested that they go beyond the official study materials and seek out more information on their own. They know enough about their subjects that they can ask intelligent questions and get into lively debates. They also recognize that education doesn’t stop when they graduate, but is truly a lifetime pursuit.

4. Enthusiasm. When it comes to any long-term project, there’s no substitute for passion. Keeping your energy level high and your outlook positive allows you to overcome the temporary setbacks that inevitably occur whenever you’re trying to accomplish something of value. Like the Little Engine That Could in the classic children’s story, believing “I Think I Can — I Think I Can” can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, propelling you forward toward your graduation.

5. Focus. Successful online students tend to know what they want from life. They also tend to know what it takes to achieve their goals. They see education as a means to an end, be it money, security, respect, control — or all of the above. Wanting a better life, they’re willing to make the personal and financial investments necessary to earn the rewards they desire.

Do you have the five qualities of a successful online student? If so, then maybe it’s time you start thinking about earning your online degree. Everest University Online, a division of Everest University, is a great place to start.

Starting your own business can be an exciting, rewarding and enriching experience. It can also be frustrating, painful and sleep-depriving. But if you're ready to invest your blood, sweat and tears -- and perhaps all your personal assets -- to realize your vision, then becoming an entrepreneur might be your ticket to success. Here are 10 basic steps every entrepreneur should take when launching and managing a new business:

Flower shop owner.

Today, it seems like everyone wants to become an entrepreneur. And why not? Certainly working for someone else — even a big successful corporation — is no guarantee of job security. (Even as the Great Recession recedes, layoffs are still common.) And barely a day passes without news of some 20-year-old selling his garage-based business for untold millions of dollars.

Starting your own business can be an exciting, rewarding and enriching experience. It can also be frustrating, painful and sleep-depriving. But if you’re ready to invest your blood, sweat and tears — and perhaps all your personal assets — to realize your vision, then becoming an entrepreneur might be your ticket to success.

Here are 10 basic steps every entrepreneur should take when launching and managing a new business:

1. Get Educated. If you plan to run a business, it helps to have some business background. A college degree in business or accounting can be very helpful. But don’t stop there. You should be constantly reading books, business journals and blogs to better understand the workings of general business and your chosen industry.

2. Research the Playing Field. The old saying “Look before you leap” is particularly relevant when starting a business. Research your industry, your market, you customers and your competition. Try to understand why businesses like the one you’re planning succeed and why others fail. Learn from other people’s mistakes.

3. Assemble a Championship Team. No one succeeds alone. Even if you plan to start as a one-person operation, you may still need to seek occasional help and advice from lawyers, accountants and freelance specialists like marketers and web designers. You don’t need to have these people on retainer, but you should know who to reach out to when you need professional support.

4. Write a Business Plan. Putting together a formal business plan forces you to think about your proposed venture from top to bottom. Your plan will necessarily detail your company’s purpose, structure, operations, marketing and funding. A business plan is something you can fall back on whenever you find yourself drifting off course. Such a plan will also be required should you ever go to a bank or other funding source for a loan. Which brings us to…

5. Get Properly Funded. A key reason so many new businesses fail so quickly is because they just don’t have enough money to sustain themselves. It can take months or even years before a company starts showing a profit. If you’re launching your enterprise by posting a website and working evenings and weekends out of your home office or garage, capitalization may not be a major issue. But if your business depends on having a brick-and-mortar presence, equipment and employees, you better have enough cash socked away to get you through the lean times.

6. Commit Yourself 100 Percent. Launching a successful business is a tremendously difficult job that requires nothing less than total commitment. Be prepared to get up early, work late, and spend evenings and weekends launching and sustaining your enterprise. Hey, if starting a business was easy, everyone would be doing it!

7. Market, Market, Market. To grow your business and get customers, you need to get the word out. Today, there are many marketing avenues you can pursue, even if you don’t have a big budget. In addition to small print ads in local advertising circulars and neighborhood newspapers, you can market through e-newsletters, blogs and social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. And don’t forget to build a website! Today, you’re not considered a real business if you’re not on the Internet!

8. Sell Benefits. It doesn’t matter what kind of goods or services you’re selling. In the end, you’re selling benefits. Your business is somehow going to make life easier, happier, safer, more convenient, less expensive and otherwise more pleasant for your customers/clients. Benefits should be the focus of your marketing messages as well as your customer follow-through. And speaking of customers…

9. Always Put the Customer First. Customer satisfaction should always be your No. 1 priority. This can sometimes mean going way out of your way — and even losing money on a particular transaction — to keep your customers happy. Happy customers are repeat customers. Unhappy customers can become “assassins” whose poor word-of-mouth can keep others away as well.

10. Be Prepared to Take Calculated Risks. Entrepreneurs are often celebrated as risk takers. But there are different kinds of risks, and some are smarter than others. As a businessperson, you should welcome calculated risks, those you have determined have the potential for high returns and an acceptably low chance of failure. But when risks become dangerous when a failure can doom your company and perhaps even set you up for personal bankruptcy. Taking a high-risk chance should be avoided, no matter how large the upside may appear to be.

Start by Getting a Business Degree from Everest University Online

Before you launch any new business enterprise, you should understand how business works. One good way to do this is to get a business degree from Everest University Online, a division of Everest University.

Everest University Online offers two-year associate degree and four-year bachelor’s degree programs that teach you the fundamentals of business operations, financing, business law, accounting, marketing and human resource management. Because classes are online, you can take them during evening hours, on weekends, or whenever else your schedule is clear. This allows you to work toward your degree while working at your current job or even laying the foundation for a business of your own.
