The medical upside of the Internet. Common dietary dangers. These are just some of the interesting stories we've uncovered for this week's Medical News Notes:

Size Trumps Exercise in Heart Disease Risk Factors. For some time now, many health science experts have suggested that you can be big and healthy, especially if you exercise regularly. However, a recent study of professional football and baseball players presented at a meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology suggests otherwise. The study of 69 professional football players and 155 pro baseball players revealed that, the heavier the athlete, the more prone he was to heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, fasting glucose levels and insulin resistance. Linebackers, traditionally the heaviest of pro athletes, scored particularly poorly in these areas, this despite the amount of training and exercise they generally endure. If the study's findings are correct, it suggests that weight loss, not exercise alone, is essential to maintaining good cardiovascular health, especially among overweight individuals.,

Internet Use Boosts Brain Activity. Older people with little or no experience with the Internet enjoy a significant degree of increased brain activity after doing online searches for just a few weeks, this according to research recently conducted by the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to view brain activity in volunteers in their 50s, 60s and 70s, the researchers discovered that men and women performing their first Web searches activated key portions of their brains known to be associated with working memory and decision-making. These same areas tend to be highly active with seasoned Web users as well, according to previous research. It's long been known that staying mentally and physically active is important to maintaining optimum brain functions as we age. And with more and more people living longer and longer, perhaps the Internet can serve as a "fountain of youth," keeping our minds sharp and supple long into our Golden Years.

Sodium, Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Kidney Dysfunction. People with a diet high in sodium and that include artificial sweeteners may be at higher risk of losing critical kidney functions, this according to research conducted by doctors at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. One study of more than 3,000 women conducted over an 11-year period associated higher dietary sodium intake with higher-than-average kidney function decline as the participants aged. The second study showed a doubling of kidney function decline among people who drank at little as one artificially sweetened beverage per day; no decline was noted among people who drank sugar-sweetened sodas. The researchers cautioned that the study focused only on older Caucasian women, and that the findings may not apply to men or people of other ethnicities.

Scientists Seek Ways to Eliminate Memories. The 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind found heartbroken Jim Carrey using a fictional brain-altering machine to erase his memories of a failed love affair. Such memory manipulation may soon be more science than fiction. Researchers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., have discovered a "memory gene" that can be chemically manipulated in mice; they hope to use a similar process to treat post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans and others. This is on top of experiments already being conducted with the drug propranolol, which dulls the emotions associated with certain strong memories. But the central question many scientists and doctors are asking is: If you remove someone's memories, do you also change the person? And if you remove the memory of a painful experience, does it increase the odds it will be repeated? Breakthroughs in the not-too-distant future may bring this once-philosophical argument into the medical mainstream.

They say that you never get a second chance to make a great first impression. If so, taking time to ensure that the first impression you make is a good one should be a top priority for anyone preparing to go on a job interview.

Remember, a job interview is not an opportunity to "express yourself." You're there to show potential employers you're a better investment than the dozens of other applicants they're considering. Don't give them an easy reason to say "No."

Following are some essential "dos" and "don'ts" for men and women that will help set a positive tone with potential employers before you even utter your first word:

For Women

Do: Dress conservatively. Avoid showing (distracting) cleavage and wear either pants or a moderate-length skirt. (Your skirt should cover your thighs when you're seated.)

Don't: Over-accessorize. Wear only one pair of earrings. You might even leave your purse in the car.

Do: Make sure your hair is neatly cut and styled.

Don't: Dye your hair an unnatural color or wear a style that is overtly "radical."

Do: Make sure your nails are well-manicured. Use either a clear or subtle red polish.

Don’t: Sport dagger-like nails or use bright or gaudy colors.

Do: Wear subtle or no perfume.

Don't: Wear patterned hosiery or go bare-legged.

For Men

Do: Wear a business suit or sport coat along with a neutral-colored shirt and tie.

Don't: Wear a short-sleeved shirt (especially with a tie), or choose a tie whose pattern clashes with your shirt or jacket.

Do: Shave, get a haircut and clean your nails.

Don't: Wear jewelry (except for a wedding ring or class ring) and/or heavy cologne.

Do: Make sure your socks match your shoes.

Don't: Wear socks so short that people can see your hairy legs when you sit and cross your knees.

Do: Get a shoe shine.

Don't: Wear sneakers or athletic shoes, even if they cost $200 a pair.

Do: Make sure your belt and shoes match.

Don't: Wear rumpled clothes or suits that look like they came right off the rack. Note: If you are wearing a new suit or sport coat, make sure you've removed all the tags!

For Men & Women:

Do: Leave the sunglasses, iPods, earphones and other accessories in your car or briefcase.

Don't: Wear facial piercings, tongue jewelry or bear visible tattoos.

Do: Stand up straight, sit erect—and smile.

Don't: Chew gum or, worse yet, smoke a cigarette.

Do: Get that job!

To Earn That Job, You Need an Education!

The first step in qualifying for virtually any job is to have the appropriate education. Everest makes it possible for people eager to enter a variety of industries to get the professional career training they need. Some programs can be completed in less than a year. Popular career fields include medical assisting, dental assisting, massage therapy, criminal justice, accounting, business and IT. Diploma, Associate, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs are available (depending on location). Programs and schedules vary by campus. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Unfortunately, there could be a thousand reasons, some which seem quite valid, a person will not reach his or her true potential in life.

Make no mistake, the time, energy, and inner searching it takes to plant one's feet firmly on the road of accomplishment is no easy task. However, we know that the challenge becomes a lot easier when there are solid support structures in place that can help you reach your goals.

We know from experience that employers are looking for qualified candidates to fill openings such as dental assistants, medical assistants, massage therapists and IT professionals to name just a few.

We also know that you have the potential to be more because there are thousands of people just like you who've done it. Our commitment is to be with you every step of the way; just as it was for them.

Here's How We Do It

One of the most important assets we'll provide are instructors who can identify with where you are in life. Our programs and the way we instruct are centered on the needs of our students. This means you'll have the right size classroom, the right kind of support, and the right role models to help you navigate each day.

Second, our curriculum and training programs offer broad support by providing morning, afternoon and evening classes.

You get to choose, and we're betting there’s a program for you at Everest.

Here's What We Ask

We ask that you bring a desire to succeed with you each day to the classroom. If that desire is strong enough, there will be very few things in life that can keep you from your goals.

We'll continue to follow up and make sure the financial aid is available for those who qualify. We'll also work hard to make sure you get all the help you need to find and land the job you're worked so hard to train for when it comes time for you to launch your career.

We think Everest can be the perfect fit. Contact us today and start training for an exciting new career.

The truth is there are thousands of people who prefer to get the industry-specific training they need and then get on with their lives.

At Everest, we understand that not everyone will take the same approach to higher learning.

As a result, our campuses offer short-term diploma programs in a variety of in-demand career fields that have helped thousands of students reach their primary education goals in as short a time as possible.

Key Attributes of Short-Term Career Training

Short-term career training is constructed so that you get quality hands-on training along with the traditional classroom learning approach. The standard procedure at Everest ensures that you'll be a part of small work teams where you get to work side by side with others who are just as motivated as you are to succeed.

At Everest, short-term career training also means that you'll work on real-world equipment. Combine this with instructors who bring real-world experiences to the classroom each day, and we think you'll experience a winning combination that might just make all the difference in the world in helping to advance your education.

Your short-term career training at Everest will allow you to hit the ground running when it comes to time to launch a career and interview for entry-level positions in your field.

Numerous School Locations

With 83 campuses in the Unites States, there's a good chance you'll be near a school location too. No matter what school location you decide to attend, you'll be privy to the same care and attention that has become the Hallmark of Everest.

Not every short-term career training program is created equal. At Everest, we also provide the right kind of financial aid for those who qualify. Career placement, career planning, career development, and career coaching are also high on our priorities list.

Why not contact Everest today to find out more about the short-term career training that can become the perfect foundation for helping you launch the career of your dreams.

Jobs exist in several categories, which includes location/setting, and the type of massage being administered.

If you're interested in working in a spa, you may find available jobs in resorts, salons, vacation destinations, day spas and more. Therapeutic massage therapy job opportunities may include hospitals, private homes, corporations, and elderly care centers.

With over 80 different types of massages that can be administered, the job of a massage therapist should be far from boring. Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, reflexology and sports massage are just a few of the many modalities that can be practiced as a licensed professional.

In the United States alone, there are billions of dollars spent annually on massage therapy. Another factor that will have an impact on available jobs might be the notable number of therapists who quit their jobs after time because of the mental or physical work involved.

Massage therapy graduates at Everest can gain the practical experience and confidence to seek entry-level jobs as soon as they decide to launch a career.

Additional Job Opportunities for Massage Therapists Include:

Hospitals

Doctors' Offices

Health Spas

Fitness Centers

Sports Organizations

Tourist Destinations Cruise Ships

Let's talk briefly about several habits that can literally help to change your life! You'll come across hundreds of methods over time that you can employ to realize desired results.

No one method can be said to be superior over another. It's really about what works best for each of us.

However, there are common approaches that everyone can agree upon, that if followed, will generally be expected to produce a positive outcome with respect to our lives in general.

Focus on developing ONE habit

Think about your life and the most important habit you'd like to develop. You can make it a two-week or a thirty-day challenge. Just gear up to follow through as best you can.

Write out your challenges and strategies on paper

It helps to have a road map of where you are, and where you'd like to end up. Don't feel that what you write down has to be perfect in this exercise. Just try and get a grip on how you perceive things to be.

Commit in ways that make you accountable

It's not a bad idea to tell someone you can trust what your plans are. Make sure they have a positive outlook on life as well. The last thing anyone needs is someone predicting the task will be impossible to achieve.

Create a support group

We all fail at things from time to time. However, time will reveal to you it's the successful ones who picked themselves back up. A good support structure can surround you with positive vibes.

Get in the habit of rewarding yourself

There's nothing like receiving an award. If we can get in the habit of rewarding our personal successes, we'll become encouraged to repeat the process over and over again.

Pick yourself up if things don't go as planned

Success comes when we learn to keep pressing on, no matter what challenges seem to be in the way. Failing at something can often be just as important as succeeding. The key is in what we take away from each experience.

Everest is a place where you can get the education, training, support and experience to help you become accountable to yourself and others in your life from the day you graduate.

You've come this far, and we believe we help you can lay a foundation that might just help you take it all the way.

Contact us today and learn about the support and career training programs that can make a huge difference in how life chooses to reward you.

Do you know the difference between a ghost, a poltergeist, a gnome and a goblin? If not, how will you properly report your next supernatural encounter to your local Ghostbuster? With Halloween coming up fast, it's time to KNOW YOUR SPOOKS!

BIG FOOT – Also known as "Sasquatch," this is the giant man-ape believed to roam the forests of the Pacific Northwest. First reported in 1811, Big Foot is not exactly a "monster," as it's reported to be meek and reclusive—and smell like a wet shag carpet.

CHUPACABRA – This is the fabled "goat sucker" first reported in Puerto Rico in 1995, and since then believed to be terrorizing livestock in the American Southwest as well as countries as far south as Chile. Sometimes described as a large spiny-backed reptile that hops like a kangaroo and other times like a large, hairless mutant canine, Chupacabra is one of the newest members of the monster pantheon.

DEMONS – These are minions of Satan, fallen angels who, while banished to Hell, still manage to drop in on us mere mortals to wreak havoc on our lives, usually via "demonic possession." Some believe that demons can be conjured and then controlled—but this often leads to, well, "demonic possession." Get the pea soup ready….

GHOSTS – Traditionally, ghosts are spirits of the dead that can occasionally—and usually briefly—appear to the living. Many people who study these things believe that ghosts are the latent emotional energy or "mental fingerprint" left behind by people who suffer a sudden, unexpected or particularly traumatic death.
GNOMES – Gnomes are supernatural "little people" of Briton or perhaps the lost souls of pre-Christian pagans doomed to walk the earth.

GOBLINS – Of European origin, goblins are grotesque, disfigured, ill-tempered and mischievous supernatural beings whose main purpose appears to be to annoy us. The main component of their blood is hemogoblin. (Sorry about that.)

GREMLINS – Gremlins were mischievous little creatures blamed by Army Air Force mechanics for airplane failures during WWII. Don't expose them to bright lights, get them wet or feed them after midnight? That's just made up.

POLTERGEIST – The difference between a poltergeist and a ghost is that a ghost just stands there while a poltergeist, usually unseen, makes noises, opens doors, slams windows, throws things and even attacks people. Many paranormalists believe that, while ghosts are troubled spirits of the dead, poltergeists are actually psychic projections of living people, usually girls just entering adolescence.

TROLLS – Of Scandinavian origin, trolls are traditionally "small giants" who are mean, ugly, violent hillfolk who hide in caves or under bridges.

VAMPIRES – Virtually all cultures have myths about people who attempt to live forever by sucking the life from others. These tales were particularly prevalent in Eastern Europe during the late Middle Ages. In 1897, Irish author Bram Stoker melded these folk tales with the nickname of real-life 15th century Romanian tyrant Vladimir "The Impaler" Tepes to create "Dracula.”

WITCHES – Throughout history, drought, disease, famine and just plain old bad luck have been blamed on "witches," usually not-so-popular members of a community (usually female) believed to be dabbling in the supernatural. "Witch hunts" reached their zenith in North America in the late 1600s in Colonial Massachusetts when mass hysteria led several young women to be prosecuted for witchcraft.

WEREWOLVES – Like vampires, werewolves—people who can shape-shift into violent wolf-like creatures—can be found in folktales from cultures all over the world, including North America. The idea that you can cure "lycanthropy" with a silver bullet didn't enter the literature until the early 20th century.

ZOMBIES – In Haiti, voodoo priests have traditionally used a combination of powerful psychotropic drugs to make victims appear dead and then bring them "back to life" as mindless slaves. Since George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), zombies have morphed (culturally speaking) into mindless but virtually unstoppable flesh eaters who are victims of any number of super-viruses. Hmmmm, brainsssss…….

And that said, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
