“We recently installed Evertune bridges onto four of Joe’s non-trem guitars. There are a couple of Chickenfoot songs that have some intricate rhythm work on them and Joe was interested in trying that bridge. It was a great match. He loved how the bridges kept the chords in tune on those songs.”

The American Company EverTune was founded by musician and physicist Cosmos Lyles, who also had the initial idea about the constant tension system. His partner is Paul Dowd who initially was a paid consultant of Cosmos but bought into his idea from the start and since has been responsible for realizing the mechanical solution.

The heart of the system is 6 springs, which hold the strings and which by functioning like an automobile suspension ensure the same tension the whole time, regardless whether the string is influenced by mechanical or atmospheric influences (e.g. heat). Read the full article (PDF) >

UG Team, February 08, 2011

EverTune is a simple concept that keeps a string in tune until the user wants it to be changed. It is an all mechanical system that is based on a spring and lever. They are not reinventing the wheel but at the same time have been the first to come up with this system. It has one, yes one, moving part. For anyone that has run into problems with multiple parts breaking well here is your solution. This is not a system that tunes your guitar for you, you tune the guitar, and then Evertune holds it there nearly forever. It will keep the same tune that the player sets for the guitar. Read the full article >

by TOM BEAUJOUR

The Guitar That Stays in Tune
In October, an engineer and a musician named Cosmos Lyles began selling EverTune, a guitar bridge that keeps the instrument from going out of tune no matter how hard its strings are strummed or bent.

Self-tuning guitars have been available since the late ’80s but have failed to gain traction among players because of their complexity. Gibson’s Robot Guitar system, for example, requires a rechargeable battery to power an onboard computer and motors that retune the instrument. EverTune, however, is a purely mechanical spring-and-lever system: when a string stretches or slips, the springs apply the opposing force necessary to compensate for the shift, thus maintaining the correct tension and tuning. Lyles’s solution eluded guitar builders for decades, but he stresses that it’s not the product of wildly original thinking. “Ask any engineer how to flatten a tension curve, which is what EverTune does,” he says, “and 9 out of 10 of them will say you should use a spring-and-lever system like the one I designed.”

This is the third time an EverTuned guitar has graced the Tonight Show stage (the first two were for performances by Lifehouse and Alanis Morissette). Apart from being perfectly in tune (even after going from the hot Burbank parking lot to the studio’s chilly interior) the notable feature of this visit was a personal meeting with Jay Leno.

Enter the realm of the EverTune bridge with visionary Cosmos Lyles, inventor of the patented 2010 Popular Science Invention of the Year. His device is designed to take any guitar to a magical place of Absolute Tune and Shared Tension, where six-strings and perfect pitch dare to co-exist in harmonic splendor, defying the conventional expert wisdom that guitars will never stay exactly in tune or achieve perfect intonation.

“The inspiration of all strings in tune with each other hit me like a wave fi ve years ago,” Lyles explains; “and swept me away.” Read the full article (PDF) >

Producer Sean McDonald LOVES his EverTuned ESP Guitar

Producer Sean McDonald got his start as a musician and songwriter before becoming a maestro behind the sound board, so he feels for his musicians.

“The records I make usually have a lot of guitar stacking. This process is so trying, as you typically have to tune for either a part of the neck, or a specific chord in order for it to be perfectly in tune. Tuning, tracking, tuning, doubling…Next part… tuning, tracking, tuning, doubling, and so on and so on. We get great rhythm tracks, but it takes FOREVER, and the guitar players are driven to tears during the process. Playing, stoping, tuning, starting OVER AND OVER.”

Sean was amazed and delighted to discover EverTune, and took his EverTuned ESP for a test drive:

“After about 15 minutes, I was tuned, up and running. The guitar felt normal, and the sustain may have been improved. I used the guitar for 4 hours straight, it never went out of tune. NEVER. I’ve never experienced this during a session. That was nearly three weeks ago: this guitar is still perfectly in tune.”

Not that he hasn’t tried to put it out of tune…

“I’ve tried to get it to mess up, taking it from a crazy hot car to heavily air conditioned studio, and it just stays perfect.”

The real benefit, though, became clear when he went to layer guitar tracks with his EverTuned ESP:

“Doubling parts was a breeze!”

And there were other benefits to the EverTune system as well:
“I’ve set it up so you can’t pull it sharp when fretting a chord. But if I need vibrato: just a few turns on the tuning peg, and I’ve got vibrato, and the guitar still stays perfectly in tune.”

Sean’s advice to producers and guitarists?

“If you’re as crazy about being in tune as I am, you need to get one of these.
Concentrate on the important stuff, being creative, performing, playing compelling parts, and forget about tuning rash that has been inherent in guitars until now. This has become the only guitar I want to use. Now I just need bridges for my Tele and Gibson!”

David Levita, guitarist for Alanis Morissette, had a problem. His beloved ’62 Gibson 335 was on her last legs. With decaying tuners, she couldn’t stay in tune more than 30 minutes.

With nothing to lose, and everything to gain, he took a chance on EverTune. We took care of his baby, and brought her back to life…and beyond!

In this video, Levita marvels at his Gibson’s newfound abilities. Hot. Cold. High or Low. No matter how you treat her, she plays beautifully: Always in Tune. He even took her into the Tonight Show’s air-conditioned TV studio (out of the summer heat of Burbank, CA) and she played flawlessly! In fact, at the time he recorded this video, David hadn’t tuned her since the day she returned from her surgery at EverTune Hospital!
