トッテナムコートロードにあるカフェ・Loaf。あの辺りで昼食を取らないといけなかったので2回行った。レトロなインテリアはなかなか素敵なのだけれど、ジェイミー・オリバーのレストラン（Jamie’s ItalianやUnion Jacks等）みたいで、ちょっと個性に欠ける。

メニューは、Grilled Cheese toasties（具とチーズ入りホットサンド）、wrap（巻いたサンドイッチ）、mac ‘n’ cheese（マカロニチーズ）hot box（コンボ）、サラダなど、アメリカン/ブリティッシュの軽食。シェフは前の晩よく寝てなかったのか疲れてたのか、頼んだTuna Melt（缶入りツナとチーズ入りサンドイッチ）はツナが、そしてChicken Pestoはペストソースが入っていないという失態。幸い店内で食べていたので、すぐに作り直してもらうことが出来たが。ようやく出来上がったサンドイッチは不味くはないけど、近くのチェーン店・Eat.と変わらないレベル。シーザーサラダはドレッシングが多過ぎて後味悪すぎ。そして「自慢」のコーヒーも、Allpressのコーヒー豆、最高級のLa Marzoccoエスプレッソマシンを使っていて、どうしてこの味？と首を傾げてしまう。一つ救いは、フレンドリーなスタッフのサービス。間違いに迅速に対応、お詫びとしてコーヒー、ケーキを無料にしてくれた。でも全体的には、全てが中途半端。リピはしないかな。

We tried Loaf twice, as we had to eat lunch around there. This small café with the retro-style décor is good looking, but also looks a bit chain-ish like Jame Oliver’s restaurants, such as Jamie’s Italian and Union Jacks.

They serve American/British favorites; “Grilled Cheese” toasties as well as salads, hot box (combo meal), their version of “mac ‘n’ cheese” and wraps (menu). But chef didn’t sleep well or for other reason, and we got Tuna Melt sandwich without tuna and Chicken Pesto without basil pesto. Thank god we were eating-in and not in hurry, so we could tell them right away and ask them to redo. Result? Those toasties were OK, but not better than nearby Eat. Their caesar salad had too much dressing and the taste was too strong. Their proud coffee from Allpress, made with La Marzocco was not impressive either – why can’t they make a good coffee with the combination of good coffee beans and best espresso machine? However, one thing good about them was a good & friendly service – the staff promptly responded to their mistake and offered a nice gesture. Overall score, average.

テート・ブリテンのショップで、ロンドンの旧式ルートマスターをかたどったレターラック・Routemaster Letter Rack（£20）を買った。イギリス人デザイナーのSusan Bradleyがデザイン。彼女の製品は全て、イングランド内で作られているそう。コーティングを施した鉄製で、そのまま置いても使えるし、壁にかけられるようにもなっている。可愛くて私たちのお気に入り。

We bought this London’s iconic Routemaster Letter Rack (£20), designed by British designer Susan Bradley, at the Tate Britain shop. All her products are proudly made in England, which are rarity nowadays. The letter rack is made of coated steel, and can be free standing or wall mounted. Very cute, and we love it!

昨日の続き。Gary Hume（ギャリー・ヒューム）は、ダミアン・ハーストなど同じGoldsmiths collageの卒業生とともに、ヤング・ブリティッシュ・アーティストを代表する一人で、1990年代初め頃、グロスペイントを施したhospital doorsシリーズで有名になった。テート・ブリテンのGary Hume展では、独特の色使いや筆致、構図で描かれた、過去約20年の絵画や立体作品約25点を展示している。

ヒュームは、鮮やかな色を好み、時に不調和と思える色の組み合わせを用いる。作品のモチーフは、母親や赤ん坊、友人、有名人などの人物、花や鳥などの自然や、雪だるまなど子供時代の思い出など。原形をわずかにとどめているものの、抽象画に近いほどゆがめたり細部を省略して、その主題を表現する。主な作品は初期の代表作・ Tony Blackburn (1993. photo galleryの4作目) や Blackbird (1998. 写真上)、そして最近の作品 Red Barn Door (2008) 等。

ヒュームの、キャンディーやアイスクリームを思わせる色使いは、とても美味しそうで、味見してみたくなる。彼の花や鳥の絵は、ユルいけれど力強くて好きなんだけれど、アンゲラ・メルケル（写真下）などの人物画は、ちょっとブラックで、落ち着かない気持ちにさせるものも。

Continue from yesterday’s topic. Gary Hume is one of the YBA (Young British Artists) artists, together with fellow Goldsmiths graduates such as Damien Hirst, and came to prominence in the early 1990s with his hospital doors in high gloss paint. Tate Britain’s Gary Hume exhibition, showcasing around 25 works, highlights his innovative use of colour, line and composition over the last 20 years. 

Hume uses strong and sometimes dissonant colour combinations, with recognisable images often fragmented to near abstraction. His favoured subjects are figures such as mothers and babies, friends and celebrities, as well as images drawn from nature or childhood including flowers, birds and snowmen. Highlights include iconic early works such as Tony Blackburn (1993. 4th on photo gallery), and Blackbird (1998. photo above), as well as recent paintings such as Red Barn Door (2008).

I like his use of candy or gelato colours (look yummy), and his paintings on flowers and animals such as Tulips (2009) and Blackbird (1998) are very impressive. However, some of his portraits and faces, such as Michael Jackson and Angela Merkel (below), are rather dark and make me feel uncomfortable.

6月5日から9月1日まで、テート・ブリテンでは、Patrick Caulfield展とGary Hume展を同時開催中。各展は小規模だけれど、1枚のチケット（大人で£14.50/寄付なし£13.10）で、時代が異なるイギリス人コンテンポラリー・アーティスト2人の作品を観ることが出来る。

Patrick Caulfield（パトリック・コーフィールド）は、大胆でシンプルな筆致とカラフルな色使いで知られたアーティストで、静物画など伝統的な絵画ジャンルを独自の作風で表現。また家庭やカフェ、レストランなどのインテリアを主題として、好んで描いた。この展覧会では30以上の作品を展示、コーフィールドの絵画スタイルの変化を追っている。1960年代の初期の作品は、Still Life with Dagger (1963)に見られるように、対象物の線画に平坦な色使いが特徴。70年代になると、After Lunch (1975)のように、トロンプ・ルイユなど異なった手法を組み合わせた、より複雑な絵画に移行する。ちなみにAfter Lunchは、Looking at the View展の私の好きな作品の一つでもある。

主な見所は、Portrait of Juan Gris (1963)、Pottery (1969)、 Interior with a Picture (1985–6)など。また、余り知られていないBend in the Road (1967)やTandoori Restaurant (1971)、後期作品のBishops (2004. photo galleryの6番目の作品) や、遺作となったBraque Curtain (2005)も展示されている。

このブログでも何回か書いたが、私はシンプルでカラフルなアート作品が好きだ。なので、コーフィールドの作品も嫌う理由が全くない。彼のより抽象的な作品（特に後期に多い）は彼の持ち味があまり感じられず好きではないが、Dining Recess (1972. 写真下) や Window at Night (1969. 最下写真にあるバナーにも使われている) は、すごくいいと思う。

Patrick Caulfield exhibition, in parallel with Gary Hume exhibition (I will write about it tomorrow), has currently been running at Tate Britain from June 5 to September 1. With one ticket (Adult £14.50/without donation £13.10), you can see the exhibitions of two British contemporary artists in different generations, though each one is not in large scale.

Since 1960s, Patrick Caulfield has been known for his bold and vibrant paintings of modern life that reinvigorated traditional artistic genres such as the still life and interiors, both domestic and social scenes such as café and restaurant. This exhibition, showcasing over 30 works, traces the development of his artistic style. His early paintings in 60s are characterised by flat areas of colour with objects defined by simple outlines, such as such as Still Life with Dagger (1963). In the 1970s he began to combine different artistic styles including trompe l’oeil to create more complex paintings like After Lunch (1975), which is one of my favorite work at Looking at the View exhibition.

Highlights include Portrait of Juan Gris (1963), Pottery (1969), and Interior with a Picture (1985–6), alongside with lesser known Bend in the Road (1967) and Tandoori Restaurant (1971). Also you can see his later paintings such as Bishops (2004. 6th in the photo gallery) and his final work, Braque Curtain (2005). 

As I have written several times in my blog, I like paintings with simple brushstrokes and vivid colours. So there is no reason to hate Caulfield’s work, though I am not very passionate about his paintings which are more abstract, especially as seen in his later time.  Some of my favorites are Dining Recess (1972. photo below) and Window at Night (1969. Used in a banner as seen in the last photo).

The Attendantは、1890年頃に建てられた男性用公衆便所という、飲食店では考えられないロケーションに今年2月にオープンした、ユニークなカフェ。1960年代から50年以上、使われないで放置されていたものを、10万ポンドと2年という歳月をかけて計画・改築、徹底的に清掃を行い完璧に清潔にしたという。昔の管理人部屋はキッチンとして生まれ変わったが、鋳鉄製の凝った外観、ヴィクトリア朝時代のフロアタイル、またカウンターブースに改造されたDoulton & Co社製のポーセリン便器など、オリジナルの特徴も残している。

このカフェは、提供するフードやドリンクの品質にも注意を払う。ミシュラン星付きのレストラン・Pollen Street Socialで働いていたというシェフが、青果卸売市場のNew Covent Garden Marketや、Ivy House Farmなど厳選された業者から仕入れた高品質の食材を使い、腕を振るう。コーヒーはCaravan Roasteryの豆を使用。バリスタの一人に見覚えがあると思ったら、オールドストリートのカフェ・Salvation Janeで以前働いていた人だった。

元公衆便所（しかも男性用）と思うと、ちょっと生理的には微妙なところだが、雰囲気はいい。小さなお店だから混んでいる時間は席取りが難しそう。ミシュラン星レストラン出身のシェフの作った「グルメ」サンドイッチもこだわりのコーヒーも、取り立てて美味しいと言う訳じゃないけれど許容範囲。しかし私的に問題なのは、店内にトイレがないこと。このカフェに行こうと思っている方（特に女性）はご注意を。元トイレにトイレがないなんて趣味の悪い冗談みたい。この事に気付いたのが、フラット・ホワイトを飲み終えてほっこりしていた時。Mはまだ食事中だったので、一旦外に出て他のカフェを探し、トイレを使わせてもらうために再び飲み物を買う羽目になった。小さかろうが場所がなかろうが、利尿作用のあるのコーヒーや紅茶を出すお店で、トイレがないのは信条的に許せない。考えてみたら、スタッフ用トイレはある筈だから、お客にも開放すべきじゃないかと思う。しかしロンドンには、この手の「お客様は神様」と考えないカフェが多い。そして私はそんな傲慢なカフェには、どんなにお洒落でも美味しくても、基本行かないことに決めている。

The Attendant café is housed in an unlikely location for eateries – a toilet. Built around 1890, this former men’s public toilet had been abandoned since the 1960s for more than 50 years, before this tiny café opened in February this year. After two-years of planning and £100,000 restoration, the place was jet-washed and now is thoroughly ‘clean’. The old attendant’s office has become a kitchen. They have kept some original features such as the cast-iron exterior, Victorian floor tiles, Doulton & Co porcelain urinals converted into sitting booths.

In addition to its unique history and appearance, the café also care about the quality of food. Their sandwiches are created by a chef who previously worked at Michelin-star Pollen Street Social, using quality produce from New Covent Garden Market and carefully selected producers such as the Ivy House Farm. They buy their coffee beans from Caravan Roastery. We spotted one of the baristas who used to work at Salvation Jane, an Old Street venue for good coffee. 

The Attendant certainly has a character. Their michelin-level ‘gourmet’ sandwich was OK as well as their coffee, but not exceptional. But that’s not a problem. My problem was there is no toilet!! This is a warning for a potential customer, especially ladies. It is a bad joke – a toilet without toilet.  I realised it after I had my flat white, and had to go out and looked for another café, buying another drink to use their toilet. Coffees and teas are stimulant, and I have a strong belief that all cafés for eat-in should have a toilet, no matter how small it is. There should be one for staffs, so why don’t they share with customers?! In fact, there are so many cafés  in London that don’t offer a toilet to their customers, and I refuse to go to this arrongant café without toilet.

ここ２〜３年、イーストロンドンの建物の上に出現したカラフルなきのこを時々見かけた。ずっと、あれは何だろう？と疑問だったのだが、ようやく今日その正体が分かった。

これは、ロンドン在住のストリートアーティスト・Christiaan Nagelの作品（写真）。ポリウレタン製で非常に軽く、万が一落ちてきたとしても、誰も怪我しないそう。昨年10月1日付のMade in Shoreditchのインタビュー記事によると、彼はこの時点で大小250以上のキノコを作ったという。大きな作品はさすがに許可を取るが、通常ゲリラスタイルで建物の上に登り、こっそり設置するのだそうだ。

Googleマップで彼のいくつかの作品の場所は分かるけれど、最後に更新されたのが2011年4月26日なので、Vyner streetにあるOmbraレストランの上のもの（写真上）など、それ以降の作品は網羅されていない。

I’ve spotted those funky colourful mushrooms on the top of some buildings in East London these few years. And I finally found out that those are the work of London based street artist, Christiaan Nagel (photos of his mushrooms).

The mushrooms are made of polyurethane and extremely light, so that it hurts no one even if it falls. He has made over 250 in different scales, according to his interview on Made in Shoreditch, published on Oct 1st, 2012. He normally installs the mushrooms in Guerrilla style, though he gets permission for the bigger works.

You can check the locations of these mushrooms on google map, but the map was last updated on April 26, 2011, and doesn’t cover all, including the one above Ombra on Vyner street (photo above).

昨日、一昨日と2軒のピッツァの悪口を書いたが、色々な店のピッツァを試した末、最近よくランチをしに行くのが、ホクストン・スクエア近くのRossopomodoro。1997年ナポリ創業のピッツァ・チェーンで、イタリアを中心に世界に76店舗を展開、イギリスに7軒、東京にも1軒あるらしい。ナポリ近辺から仕入れた食材を使い、伝統的な薪窯で焼き上げる本格的ナポリピッツァが売りだ。ピッツァ作りの設備や食材にこだわったイギリス人経営のレストランも試してみたけれど、小さい頃から美味しいピッツァを食べて育って来たナポリ人には、やはり太刀打ち出来ないのか。

向かいのBreakfast Clubはいつも混んでいるけれど、Rossopomodoroはいつでも座れるしサービスも早い。お目当ては熱々のMargherita（マルゲリータ）かNapoletana（ナポリターナ。マルゲリータにアンチョビを追加したもの）。でも日によってシェフが違うのか波があるのか、微妙に味が違ったりするのがご愛嬌、ウェブでの客の評価が分かれるのも、このせいかもしれない。そしてお勘定の時にくれる、ナポリ人の使うハンドジェスチャーを網羅したカードも面白い（生憎手元になくて写真が載せられず）。ナポリ旅行に持って行けば、イタリア語が喋れなくてもコミュニケーションを取るのに役立ちそうだが、相手を怒らせそうなのもあるので、使う時はご注意を。

I talked bad about pizzas at two restaurants last two days. After many tries and errors, one of our recent regular place for pizza lunch is Rossopomodoro near Hoxton Square. Rossopomodoro is an Italian pizza chain founded in Naples in 1997, who now has 76 restaurants, mostly in Italy but also abroad including seven  in UK. It is a chain, but they offer an authentic Neapolitan pizza, baked in traditional wood burning ovens, using ingredients sourced in and around Naples. Their pizza is better than many independent ‘artisan’ pizzas, and I guess British can’t beat Neapolitans who grow up with ‘real’ pizza.

Despite the Breakfast Club across the street is always packed, a table is always available and service is prompt at Rossopomodoro. There we can get what we want – beautifully done Margherita or Napoletana. However, the taste sometimes change a bit depending on a day, and probably that’s why customer reviews are divided?? You can get a little cheeky present from the restaurant when you ask the bill – it’s a cute & funny cards, showing Neapolitan hand gestures (I don’t have one with me now for a photo). You can bring it when you travel to Naples so that you can communicate with locals without speaking Italian, but some of them are a bit offensive so use it discreetly.

イースト・ロンドンにあるLondon Fields Breweryの中庭で、手作りの移動可能な薪窯で焼いたピッツァを皮切りに、約2年間ロンドンの色々なストリート・マーケットでピッツァを提供してきたHomesliceが、最近コヴェントガーデンのNeil’s Yard（ニールズ・ヤード）に腰を落ち着けた。今までと同じく薪オーブンで焼いたピザは、ホールサイズで£20。ピッツァにしては高価だが、直径20インチ（約50cm）と巨大、希望すれば2種類までトッピングが選べる（写真一番下）。ピッツァは計7種類で、そのうち3種類はスライス（£4）でも注文できる（写真下から二番目）。

私たちが最初にHomesliceのピッツァを食べたのは、去年キングスクロスに期間限定でオープンしたお店・The Filling Stationだった（その時のブログ）。ここのピザはすごく美味しかった。最初、この最近オープンしたお店が彼らのお店だと知らず、そしてそのピッツァを食べた後今日ブログを書くためにネットで調べるまで、去年よく食べに行ったあのピッツァとは全然結びつかなかった。どうしてか？それはこの2つのピッツァが見た目も味も全然違ったから。The Filling Stationで食べたピッツァは、クラストはパリパリ、フレッシュで甘いトマトソースに熱々のモッツアレラチーズがうまく溶け込んで、新しい店のピザの10倍は美味しかった。でも今は、モサモサしていてトッピングも味気なく、小麦粉の味しかしない。それにサイズもデカすぎ、最後には飽きてしまう。どうしてこんなに味が変わってしまったんだろう？？

Started with a home built mobile wood fired oven in the courtyard of London Fields Brewery in East London and after two years of serving pizza on some London’s street markets, Homeslice has finally found their home in Neil’s Yard. They cook pizza in the wood-fired oven as they have always been doing. Whole pizza cost £20, unlikely expensive for pizza but it is gigantic of 20″, and you can choose up to 2 toppings on one pizza if you prefer (bottom photo). They had 7 kinds of pizza (2nd bottom photo)  and are all the same price, and 3 of them are also available by the slice (£4).

We had Homeslice’s pizza for the first time at The Filling Station, last year’s pop-up venue in Kings Cross (see my past blog). We loved it. But initially I didn’t know this newly opened restaurant is theirs, and couldn’t connect their pizza with the one at The Filling Station. You know why? Because those looked different and tastes were different. The old one was 10 times better – the crust was crunchy and mozzarella cheese were beautifully melted into the fresh and tasty tomato sauce. The new one was dry, and toppings didn’t have much taste. I miss the old one, and I don’t understand why their pizza has changed so much. Also the size is too big and I got bored of the taste at the end…

マルゲリータとズッキーニとアーティチョーク半々のピッツァ

イタリアンのチェーン・Jamie’s Italian、BBQ＆ステーキ店のBarbecoa、不運な生い立ちの若者たちをシェフとして訓練するレストラン＆慈善団体のFifteenなど、さまざまな形態のレストランを経営するセレブリティ・シェフ、ジェイミー・オリヴァー。慈善家気取りでテレビ等でヘルシーな食生活をお説教（自分は太めのくせに）、大英帝国勲章・MBE受賞した名声を活かして、レストラン帝国を着々と築き上げた。嬉しいことに、最近はテレビやメディアでもあまり見なくなったが、街を歩くと彼の店が嫌でも目につく。お目当てのレストランがクローズしていたので、以前ここのピザが美味しいと何かの記事で読んだと言うMの強い希望で、彼の店・Union Jacksで嫌々ながらランチした。

「British Classics（伝統的イギリス料理）」を謳う割に、ピザやホットドッグなど、他国の料理も売り物。イギリス産の厳選食材を使っているのでオッケーということらしい。薪を使った窯で焼き上げたアメリカ風ピザ生地は粉っぽくて、取り立てて美味しい訳じゃないけれど、トッピングのトマトソースとモッツァレラチーズは新鮮で熱々。ホットドッグも、オニオンやキャベツのフィリングが多すぎるのが難点だけれど、表面をパリッと焼いたパンに、美味しいソーセージが上手くマッチしている。食材にこだわるだけに、悔しいけれど味の方は悪くない。でもシェフよりビジネスマンと化したジェイミー・オリヴァーはどうしても好きになれないので、もう行かない。

Celebrity chef & restauranteur, Jamie Oliver. He owns different types of restaurants such as Jamie’s Italian (Italian), Barbecoa (BBQ & steak), Fifteen (charity restaurant0 etc. He preaches people on TV how unhealthy they eat, though he himself doesn’t look fit. Using his fame as a TV presenter and MBE holder, he has created his restaurant empire throughout UK and abroad. Yes, I don’t like Jamie as you can guess from my writing. I am happy that I don’t see him on media as much as before, but I see his restaurant here and there when I go out, no matter if I don’t want or not. Unfortunately the restaurant we wanted to go was closed that day, so I had no other choice but going to his British restaurant Union Jacks, as M insisted because he read an article that their pizza was good.

Union Jacks is “all about bringing back nostalgic British classics”, as their website says, though what they sell are not all British, such as their ‘incredible’ pizza and ‘great British’ hot dogs. But it is ok for them as they use ‘artisanal local’ ingredients. In fact, their wood-fired flatbread pizza, came with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella was not bad, though I don’t like that kind of American style dough. Their hot dog was delicious with handmade free-range sausage served in between slightly toasted bread, although the fillings (onions and cabbages) were too much. I don’t want to admit, but their food was not bad. But I don’t come back to Jamie’s restaurants, simply because he irritates me for some reason.

5月14日から始まったテートブリテンのBP Walk through British Artは、1500年代から現代に至るイギリス・アートのナショナルコレクションで、過去500年に制作された500以上の作品を20以上のギャラリールームに時系列に配している。Francis Bacon（フランシス・ベーコン）、John Constable（ジョン・コンスタブル）、William Hogarth（ウィリアム・ホガース）、 Thomas Gainsborough（トマス・ゲインズバラ）、 George Stubbs（ジョージ・スタッブス）、J.M.W. Turner（ジョゼフ・マロード・ウィリアム・ターナー）、Gwen John、Stanley Spencer、L.S.Lowry、John Everett Millais（ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレー）、Bridget Riley、Damien Hirst（ダミアン・ハースト）、 David Hockney（デイヴィッド・ホックニー）、Rachel Whitereadなど、イギリスの名だたるアーティストの作品を含む膨大なコレクションには圧倒される。

時系列展示以外に、一つの作品 / アーティスト / テーマをより深く掘り下げるBP Spotlightコレクションシリーズの新しいディスプレイも見物。現在、コンスタブルのThe Cornfield、Image of the British School、Moving Images: Painting and Early Film、アート教育におけるBasic Design展のほか、Keith Arnatt、Rose Wylie、Douglas Gordonなど近代アーティストのコレクションを見ることが出来る。イギリス人アーティストたちが描いた風景画を集めたLooking at the View展を含むと、テートブリテンだけで膨大な量のイギリスアートが楽しめるのだが、これを全部見て回るのは、なかなか目も頭も足も疲れる。途中でワインの一杯でも飲んで、ゆっくり見て回るのがお薦め。

BP Walk through British Art (from May 14) is a new chronological presentation of the national collection of British art in a chronological display – a walk through time from the 1500s to the present day. This massive collection of British art over the past 500 years comprises around 500 artworks in over 20 galleries, and includes works by major British artists such as Francis Bacon, John Constable, William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, George Stubbs, J.M.W. Turner, Gwen John, Stanley Spencer, L.S.Lowry, John Everett Millais, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, and Rachel Whiteread (more details on the press release).

Alongside this chronological circuit, Tate Britain hosts a new series of seasonal BP Spotlight collection displays, which offer more depth on particular artworks, artists or themes: current displays include Constable’s The Cornfield, Image of the British School, Moving Images: Painting and Early Film, and Basic Design in art education, as well as on recent artists including Keith Arnatt, Rose Wylie and Douglas Gordon. Together with “Looking at the View” which explores the ways British artists have framed the view in their work, you can spend all day immersing yourself in British Art. Very interesting to see the British art all at once, but bit draining – I need a glass of wine in between.
