Everylinetellsastory is founded with the purest curiosity and burning passion to investigate various methods of designing, implementing and constructing to materialize the intention and dream of our given brief.

A space is taught to be conformed by boundary, not walls.

For a same area of space, treated with lights and shadows, we can experience yet a whole new sensation. But the space does not change, our experience does. A brightly lit room compared to a dark dim room, certainly brings down our defence and fear. It allows no secret, no monstrous affair.

RENOVATION BUDGET

Dear readers,

Recently, I have been asked by a few of my customers about the most important factor during their home renovation. Perhaps, the economy downturn has finally catch up with my customers too. It is the big factor - MONEY BUDGET.

Scene BEFORE downturn:

ID: Hello, as home owners, what do you guys have in mind about the design ? and your feasible budget ?

Home Owners: Yes, we love the hotel/resort/spa living experiences and would love to create such an environment to our much awaited love nest. As for budget, we are very open to the design concept and does not have any sum in mind yet. But its definitely within a possible sum for a good creative construction.

Scene AFTER downturn:

ID: Hello, as home owners, what do you guys have in mind about the design ? and your feasible budget ?

Home Owners: Yes, we love the hotel/resort/spa living experiences and would love to create such an environment to our much awaited love nest. As for budget, can this be possible within 10k ?

ID: *cheeks turned rosy* Well, the budget is very tight. Yes, we can definitely work around it and still can create parts of your home with that special atmosphere desired. However, There will certainly be a cutdown of the many design features in an usual Home Renovation.

Home Owners: SO WHAT ARE WE EXPECTING ?

ID: This will need to meet what is priority to your desires. Definitely, areas to cut down will be on many of the carpentry works. False ceilings and changes to finishes of tiles. What however can be expected will be recommended to focus on the toilets and kitchen, follow by Master Bedroom. Next, with a bigger budget, we can work on the Living/dining and then foyer. Last but not least, we can then spend more money on the other bedrooms. This will be our most sensible practice.

Church of the Light by Tadao Ando

Church of the Light in ibaraki, Osaka designed by the pritzker architecture prize winner TADAO ANDO in 1989.

YES, this is not a typo mistake. The year is 1989. Today, we are living in the year 2009. This will take us back 20yrs in exact. HOWEVER, this building, its design and intention were so cleverly thought that for most visitors, most might not even realised its 20yrs old.

Church of the Light - an architecture truly deserved to be worshipped and uphold.

The Church of the Light is actually just a small structure on the corner of two streets at Ibaraki( a residential neighborhood ). The Church of the Light consists of three 5.9m concrete cubes (5.9m wide x 17.7m long x 5.9m high) penetrated by a wall angled at 15°, dividing the cube into the chapel and the entrance area. Visitors will have to move between the ONLY 2 spaces designed - the sunday school and the worship hall. This is the simplicity of the project, isnt it ?

Also, as one walks into the worship hall, you will notice that the benches are made from re-purposed scaffoldings used during the construction. Just as architecture of the new millenium starts to emphasize on GREEN ARCHITECTURE and recycling materials, there we have, tadao ando already contributing his environment friendly movement 20years back.

The highlight of the small church lies in the simplest constructed yet a complex design of the cruciform. This magnificent cruciform is cut into the concrete wall behind the alter and superbly brings in the sunlight from the east every morning.

The concept as tadao ando uses is the Zen philosophies when he is conceptualising his structures. This is many times the process many of the newer generation young architects have been missing on. THE PROCESS OF DESIGN.

In this work, he managed to express the theme of a dual nature existence - lights and shadows. With his cleverly thought of intention, the occupant is meant to become aware of the unique calmness and deep division between the spiritual and the secular within himself. Indeed a very profound idealogy executed perfectly.

Many past visitors had however complained of a important feature of this church of the light as disturbing. That is the distinct empitness found through the church of the light. For tadao ando, this emptiness one experiences in the building is to being able to transfer himself from a mortal world into a spiritual realm.

NEW CONTEMPORARY ART MUSUEM IN BKK

The long awaited first public contemporary art museum in Thailand has finally opened with an exhibition entitled "Krungthep 226". Now there was one earlier exhibition but the tale of how that came to replace this one as the actual first is too tangled to relate here. So I will just describe this big show as the kickoff event.

Krungthep is the Thai name for the city known as Bangkok and 226 is the number of years since its founding as capital after the destruction of the previous capital of Ayuthaya by a Burmese army. The show has two main sections; one dealing with the first 200 years and the other section covering roughly the last 26

These two sections are on two floors of the 7-story building which is a frank homage to the Guggenheim with a central atrium and spiral ramps (uncomfortably steep in this case). The first 5 floors of museum are a combination of meeting spaces and shops which haven't been rented yet. On our last visit the shops were being used for a grad school thesis show by a local university. Interestingly the funding for the museum has come from the city of Bangkok, not the government of Thailand which maintains the somnolent National Gallery.

The show is a sprawling amalgam of painting, installation, and sculpture with a bit of photography and several video screening areas thrown in. The central idea is a commentary on life in the city at present and a vision of what it could be like in the future. Although there are a few lyrical views of corners of the city like the watercolors by Tiawat Putarakulvanich which appear in a weekly newspaper...

...or the wonderful drawings by Hakoshima Yasumi of the interiors of the local buses, most of the paintings are critical of failings in daily life or the hazards of the built environment.

In this year of dramatic political strife in Thailand Kwanchai Lichaikul's enormous and intricate "Boom 2008" presents a minutely rendered city replete with demonstrations and terrorist training exercises amidst the normal workaday world of construction and business.

Our 2 months here has been dominated by the unstable political atmosphere starting with the shutdown of the international airport by a sit-in which delayed our arrival for a week. The newspapers have been headlined every morning with new machinations of the opposing factions and the streets have been lined with posters touting candidates for the governor of Bangkok (the recently elected one was removed for corruption). So the goofy picture of artist Wasan Sitthiket on his own campaign poster brought a smile to our faces. After becoming disenchanted with the available political choices he formed and registered "The Artist's Party" with a platform calling for a "noncontrolling heart".

Another insouciant criticism of politics and the citizenry is Chatchai Puipia's sculpture incorporating a bronze casting of a crossed pair of male legs and a separate rounded butt perched on a street vendors cart which is flying a tattered Thai flag made of chicken wire. Perhaps Chatchai's citizen is avoiding joining the tumult of the opposing yellow-shirted and red-shirted factions by having no torso.

From criticism of the present, several artists leapt forward to an imagined Bangkok of the future. Top Changtrakul draws immense spare diagrams of busy scenes that lose their figurative meaning as the viewer steps back and become vivid patterns like weavings.In contrast Tatiya Udomsat's digital images of familiar Bangkok landscapes are readable at any distance as cautionary tales about how puny the efforts of homo sapiens are compared to the vigor of the thousands of species just waiting for a few rainy seasons to overwhelm the post apocalyptic city.

Another artist concerned with the yearly flooding is Richard Tsao who uses water based colors to tint his flooded studio and then sops up the color with paper.

Although the show was fairly crowded and some of the soundtracks from installations bled out into surrounding gallery spaces. the energy level of the artists was high and the occasional limp efforts were strongly outweighed by fresh ideas and slyly pointed criticism. The brand new Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is undergoing normal growing pains in the face of the world economic crisis and a lack of an experienced permanent staff but Krungthep 226 is a strong first effort in an attempt to put Bangkok on the world art map.
