Is the term ADHD (or any other label given to numerous other conditions) a marketing ploy for medical company?

Is there any truth in how medical trials are seemingly, exhibiting ADHD drugs for a quietening down or even subduing children’s ADHD signs and symptoms and not researching enough alternative options?

Is there enough research in to psychological effects of ADHD as compared to medical biology research?

So let me ask you, is the way forward, helping resolve certain aspects; like living within broken relationships, help in dealing with traumatic events and just basically helping the disadvantaged people live a more satisfactory life?

The way to overcome emotional disturbances in children may be …

A group of investigators of the University of Bologna suggest a new way of approaching emotional disturbances in children by improving their psychological well-being. The study is published in the current issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. Anxiety, mood disorders and somatoform … None of these children were receiving pharmacological treatment, but 2 of them had a special tutor for helping them in school activities (the one with dyslexia and the one with ADHD ). …

Since he was not in school yet, we did not feel the need to treat the ADHD. He got through Kindergarten with the help of a wonderful and very understanding teacher, but team sports, play dates and group situations have been really difficult … I will probably forego treating the ADHD (as he does well in school but does have trouble focusing) because he’s “functional”. But I do not want him to suffer any social or psychological consequences and want him to just relax and …

New figures are revealing that the stress caused by the credit crunch are having dramatic impacts up on relationship.

Couples are facing a bleak Christmas, inflation together with job losses are affecting couples as they take on the brunt of more crisis financial pressures. Often affecting more men losing employment than women.

Apparently men don’t generally deal as well with unemployment as women. A lot of anger comes with redundancy and men tend not to talk through their emotions as women do. Traditionally, the man ‘provides’ and for a man to lose his job, it’s not just about money, it’s loss of status, which can be a huge knock to his confidence.

Many normal, hardworking couples and families are left facing a modern relationship hurdle. Apart from the financial pressures this brings, it also brings a total shift in dynamics within relationships, men start to feel emasculated and unable to provide for their partners or family and lots of added pressure on women to be the ‘hunter gatherer’.

Should Doctors receive counseling?

A report published by bmj.com suggests that doctors should receive short-term therapy and a cut in working hours. Apparently doctors are in the highest bracket of work related stress, depression and suicides than in any other occupation. There have been calls for early intervention schemes to help doctors minimize stress and help stop ‘burn out’ before they affect their duty of care to their patients.

Stressed out Doctors

“While a lot of attention has been given to the long work hours of residents and medical errors, researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., found that distress, and not only fatigue, contributed to errors by doctors-in-training …

Taking up a mindfulness meditation practice may benefit doctors who feel fatigued or stressed out, according to a recent study. For the study, researchers assigned 70 primary care physicians to eight weekly 2 ½-hour sessions of training …

So the most stressful thing on doctors’ minds has been bottled up until these sessions,” Lisko said. “If they come across in a stressed-out way, jurors will misinterpret that as incompetence, and in fact, [doctors'] fear gets in the way …

Phenomenology is the science of phenomenon. A phenomenon is a perception or experience without clarification or explanation.

A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν, pl. φαινόμενα – phenomena) is any observable occurrence. In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it.

In philosophy, the use of the word phenomenon differs from other uses in that it refers to perceived events. Phenomena may be perceived through a person’s senses or with their mind.

In psychology, phenomenology is used to refer to subjective experiences or their study. The experiencing subject can be considered to be the person or self, for purposes of convenience. In phenomenological philosophy (and particularly in the work of Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau – Ponty) ‘experience’ is a considerably more complex concept than it is usually taken to be in everyday use. Instead, experience (or Being, or existence itself) is an ‘in-relation-to’ phenomena, and it is defined by qualities of directedness, embodiment and worldliness which are evoked by the term ‘Being-in-the-World’.

Source: Wikipedia.

So if leaving behind our assumptions, knowledge and analysis, will this endeavour to improve our empathy toward our patients?

Quite often our thoughts are automatic responses to our previous experiences, thus tainting a new and some what uncharted area. Our perceptions shape our own world and not that of others.

As therapists we encourage patients to challenge old beliefs and create new ones. So does it not make sense to continually challenge our perceptions and beliefs in relation to others?

In the words of ‘Yalom’ – Should we “both be fellow travelers neither knowing the path”?

The research consisted of a study of rhesus monkeys, chosen because they represent a brain that is very similar to that of adolescent human. the most anxious exhibited clear signs of increased anxiety activity within one particular part of the brain even when not in a stressful environment. The students say their findings show that their is a need for therapeutic intervention at a young age.

I have put together some entertaining videos for your enjoyment. The first one is quite a long video but be patient there is a lot of interesting information regarding anxiety and attachment disorders.

Did you know that most modern affluent societies harbor the greatest income inequalities and they also encounter the highest rate of psycho- social problems.

We can all agree that as most modern day countries develop, then their living standards improve…right.

So the majority of people do not have to worry about basic needs like food, clean water and keeping warm.

Increasing our incomes does not increase our life expectancy, nor does it create happiness or well being, what it does do, is quite frankly, increase our psycho-social problems.

Apparently it is the - “individuals sensitivity to this social structure that causes unequal societies to be so problematic. Understanding this relationship between social standing and income inequalities is the key. It is the person that needs to change and not society. In other words reduce inequality and the quality of life would increase for us all.”

Anarchist6[zero]6: All Social Problems Come from Inequality

Very interesting article in the paper about two academics whos research points to inequality as the cause of almost all social problems – now duh, you might say – of course. … [Richard] Wilkinson believes the answer lies in the psycho- social areas of hierarchy and status. The greater the differential between the haves and have-nots, the greater importance everyone places on the material aspects of consumption; what brand of car you drive carries far more meaning in a …

The emotional and cognitive effects of high levels of social status differentiation are profound and far reaching: greater inequality heightens status competition and status insecurity across all income groups and among both adults and … While psycho-social stress is not the only route through which disadvantage affects outcomes, it does appear to be pivotal. Firstly, psychobiological studies provide growing evidence of how chronic low level stress ‘gets under the skin’ …

Ensuring community regeneration initiatives consider not just physical re-development, but psycho-social factors, and seek to include the most excluded groups, including people with mental health problems. ….. A fundamental source of socio-economic disadvantage, inequality and social isolation is the stigma and associated discrimination with which people with mental health problems have to deal on a day-to-day basis. A recent Mind study found that 84% of people with …

The Truth about Universal Facial Expression? Do you find it easy or difficult to assess someones mood by their facial expression? So how would this affect your judgment on a person from a different race or culture?

Recent studies have reported that facial expressions are not universal as we first thought.

The findings which were determined by “Facial Action Coding System” (FACS) were quite revealing;

Participants consisted of 13 Eastern Asian and 13 Caucasian people who examined photographs of white and Chinese faces and then categorized them into six core emotional expressions; Happy; Surprise; Fear; Disgust; Anger and sadness.

It was clearly stated that people from East Asia had the most difficulty identifying expressions of fear and disgust and also separating these from surprise and anger.
