HTC sent out a short note to media outlets last night informing them of delays to shipments of the HTC One X for AT&T and the HTC 4G LTE for Sprint. The delay is related to a case last year where HTC was found to be guilty of patent infringement related to the iPhone. The result of which had the US International Trade Commission ruling that all future phones found in violation to be block from entering the US. HTC for their part believe they have a software workaround that no longer violates Apple’s patents. This was implemented in both of these phones. It’s unclear if Apple believes HTC’s fix is sufficient enough to no longer be in violation of their patent.

The HTC One X has already been released and was available in the US, but stock was limited. The EVO 4G LTE was due to hit stores on May 18th. Both are now shown as out of stock and will be until this can get resolved.

“The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.”

The HTC One X was announced months back, had been available in Europe, so it should have be clear to all parties if HTC were still in violation. This could be a simple misunderstanding or something much more.

According to a report this morning in the Wall Street Journal, Apple will begin production on a new iPhone within the next month in preperation for a launch later this year. Citing those familiar with the situation, the company has ordered screens bigger then those used in every iPhone since the first. The new display will measure at least 4-inches, which would be a vast difference from the current 3.5-inch display.

Commenting on the thought of new display for the iPhone was Nobuo Kurahasi, a securities analyst for Misuho Investors.

A new iPhone with a larger screen wouldn’t necessarily mean that Apple is making changes to its products because of what rivals are doing. The smartphone market has become diverse, but the iPhone still sets the agenda,” with the whole industry watching Apple’s every move, he said. He said that the iPhone’s strength lies in the overall experience including its user interface and applications, and the screen’s size wouldn’t be its defining feature. If Apple ever released a lower-priced iPhone, that would be more of a sign that the changing market environment is beginning to affect the company,” he added.

Kurahasi makes plenty of sense here. This move is more about the iPhone and less about competition from giant phones. If that were the case, we’d be seeing 4.8-inch or 5-inch displays. Having the biggest display on a smartphone doesn’t translate into sales. Sales is a result of pushing out a product that combines great software with solid hardware. Having a 3.5-inch display on iPhones hasn’t exactly dulled sales figures.

Shortly before Steve Jobs passing, Sony purchased the rights to the Walter Isaacson biopic that chronicles Jobs life. Now comes word from Sony that they have finalized the contract terms with Academy Award winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to pen the screenplay.

Sorkin is best known for his work on The West Wing and blockbuster movies including A Few Good Men, The American President and more recently The Social Network and Moneyball. (IMDB)

It’s lining up for there to be two movies about Jobs. The other movie, tentatively titled ‘Get Inspired‘, will star Ashton Kutcher.

If you could only see one, which one would it be? No contest, right?

There is an increasing trend of telemarketers using any means possible in an attempt to offer low-rate credit cards, free cruise trips and other nonsense. For some it’s looking for a way to lose contact with that crazy ex-girlfriend or boyfriend. We’ve outlined how to block calls on iPhone, but what about text messages. While the Messages app preferences don’t offer much in the way of preventing unwanted texts, there is hope depending upon your carrier. We traveled down the rabbit hole with all of the major carriers hoping to find out how to block SMS messages on iPhone. What we found was good and bad, so read on for the dirty details.

Preventing Phone Spam
When you receive an unsolicited text or advertisement, then you are the unfortunate victim of phone spam. According to AT&T, a large portion of these messages are sent from the Internet to your iPhone, so they are actually sent via an email message. They provide a free service with an assortment of blocking options. Once you sign up, you can make changes to the following:

Email delivery control: You can select ‘Block all text messages sent to you as email’ and/or ‘Block all multimedia messages sent to you as email‘.

Allow, Disallow Lists
You can create your own list of email addresses you’d like to either whitelist (Allow list) or blacklist. This can be extended to block any messages from a particular domain using the format domain.com.

Verizon
Sign into myVerizon and you can access Verizon Safeguards. Here you will find a tab for Internet Spam Blocking. They allow up to 15 email addresses. You can also block all text message sent from the web and/or block all text messages sent from email.

Sprint
To stop Internet Spam in its tracks, send one of the following applicable texts to 9999.

block

block

block email

How to block your crazy ex
There is a good chance that you’ve stumbled upon this article in an attempt to block messages from your crazy ex-girlfriend (or boyfriend). There are no apps in the App Store and nothing within Message that allows for this function. If you are running stock iOS, then your only option is to purchase a plan from your wireless carrier.

AT&T Wireless
AT&T offers an option called Smart Limits for Wireless, which runs $4.99 per month. It offers a host of features, but most notably the ability to block incoming, outgoing calls and text messages. This feature supports up to 30 numbers. It’s intended to be more of a parental control, but these enhanced features will prevent harassing text or phone calls.

Verizon
One of the benefits of having Verizon Wireless as your carrier is the ability to block calls and messages without an additional fee. If you have a family plan, the numbers can be blocked across all lines. Sign into myVerizon and select I want to… “Block Calls and Messages” and enter up to (5) phone numbers.

Sprint
They handle blocking through the use of shortcodes. Here’s how to block SMS messages on Sprint.

Text block XXX-XXX-XXXX (remove the dashes) to 9999.

If it goes through, you should receive the following message.
SprintFreeMsg: block: Text messages to and from “XXXXX” are now blocked.

Tip: By sending help to 9999, you’ll receive a help message from Sprint on how to use assorted shortcodes.

iBlacklist
If you are jailbroken and don’t mind the investment of $12, there’s been plenty good said about iBlacklist and it’s ability to prevent incoming calls and messages. It works similar to AT&T’s allow/disallow list, but it does so with phone numbers and not just email addresses.

Whatever your reason for blocking SMS messages from hitting your iPhone, there are a number of options to help safeguard you from receiving unwelcome texts. Depending upon your carrier, these options could be either paid or free. While the App Store doesn’t provide any solutions, jailbroken iPhones can pay a one time fee of $8 for iBlacklist, which might be advantageous to those looking to skirt extra monthly fees charged by AT&T for this type of service.

Less then a month away from WWDC and what many believe with be the release of iOS 6 beta, there are increasing more leaks surround the update. The latest comes from 9to5Mac who have received a tip from a dev which shows a small number of users of the app running iOS 6. The hits started showing up in late April according to one unnamed developer and continued into last week. One could presume Apple is testing a number of high profile apps for compatibility with iOS 6. Granted many developers will likely need to modify their codebase in some fashion to support the newest version of iOS, but it’s not uncommon for testing of this sort to occur before a new beta release.

Several sources suggest Apple will use iOS 6 to introduce their own mapping application, thus ending the long relationship with Google. Since the advent of the iPhone, Maps had always been powered by Google Maps. Recent acquisitions of mapping companies signified that a change would happen at some point and it appears that will be in iOS 6. With so many applications developed to interact with Google Maps, it will be interesting to see how much legwork developers will have to do in order to become fully compatible with iOS 6.

The oft-incorrect and recently maligned DigiTimes brings us a new rumor today surrounding the rumored iPad mini or 7.85-inch iPad. They claim the new smaller iPad will include G/F2 technology, with Nitto supplying the thin-film materials. Their sources say that Nissha Printing and TPK will produce the touch screens.

Using the G/F2 design will help reduce costs and will also make the iPad Mini thinner than previous iPad models since it will have one less layer of film than the G/F/F (glass/film/film) structure, according to sources. The G/F2 structure places the electrode on the top and bottome ends of the ITO film, which will then be laminated onto the cover glass.

On the scale of rumors, this one doesn’t sound terribly far fetched. If Apple is to find a way to release an iPad mini priced between $200 and $250, they are going to need to find a way to cut costs, without changing the iPad experience.

Graphical wire models are not just for the pros anymore. With 123D Catch, anyone with an iPad 2 and iOS 5 (or newer), can now create 3 dimensional models of anything they choose! It’s as simple as taking a series of photos from various different angles and sending them off to Autodesk’s servers to process in the Cloud. Join us for a more in depth guide of how to use the app, and review of how well it performs.

Background
You may have heard of Autocad, a leading architecting and engineering 2D and 3D modeling software. The same makers are the creators behind 123D Catch for iPad. This intensely simple app will create draw dropping 3 Dimensional Sculptures. These aren’t the 360 panoramics everyone has seen time and time again. Instead of photographing around yourself to create a 360 degree view as you would see it, you will photograph an object in order to explore it from various angles.

First Launch
The first time you open up 123D Catch, you will be greeted by an introductory video. This is followed by a sample of a dinosaur for you to play with. You can then hit next in the top right of the screen and you will be taken to a page which has a set of examples preloaded. On the bottom left is an “i”symbol. This will show four options. About will take you to a legal type agreement, Help will bring up a few page tutorial, Getting Started will show the video again, and Support will take you to the app creator’s website.

Let’s Play with Examples
Before performing your own capture, it’s a good idea to play with a few of the preloaded examples in order to get a feel for how to navigate a finished product. Two fingers will drag the model around, while one finger will pan around it. Two finger expands will enlarge the image and vise-versa. After you have had your fill of playing around lets create a capture.

Creating a Capture
To start this process, click on the New Capture Button in the middle bottom of the screen. This will take you through the tutorial automatically the first time. It’s a good idea to read through as you can prevent making some mistakes that may cause your model to render with issues. When finished the tutorial, you will have the entire screen open. Even though there is a large camera button on the right of the screen, you can push anywhere to take a picture. You picture tally will show on the bottom left. When the capture is complete, push Finish Capture on the bottom right. You can also cancel your capture at any point by pushing the back button on the bottom left.

Processing in the Cloud
This is the most brilliant part of the app if you ask me. Anyone familiar with 3 dimensional wire diagrams or video rendering knows it’s highly processor intensive. So much so, that I doubt the iPad’s hardware would be able to handle such a task. That’s why Autodesks cloud method is so brilliant. Basically, your set of pictures are sent to their servers which do have the technical capability to process your model. This takes the grunt work off of your iPad and onto their servers. Once the model is completed, it’s delivered back to your iPad at which time you are notified of completion. I have found the whole process takes around 3-5 minutes depending on the amount of photos taken.

Sign In and Community
Having some kind of account is a requirement for Autodesk to process your model. They offer a range of options to use such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Windows ID, and even their own.

There is a Community option on the top menu. This is great because, what good is making a 3D model if you have no one to share it with. Here you can see other peoples captures by Popular, Features, Latest, and even a MyCorner option. This option will allow you to see friend’s captures (should you be signed in using a social network) and also show yours. It is fun to check out what other’s have made – even though you must download their models to your device before you can view them.

How Well Does it Work? – Overall
It works fantastically well. Of course it is not going to be perfect every time, but the quality to which it is able to stitch the photos together is amazing. Especially for being a free app! I have made a few models of friends, chairs, tissue boxes and more. It is one of those apps that will just wow someone. It is almost like seeing your friends or yourself turned into a video game 3D model. The idea of processing in the cloud is genius, the models are fun to use and create, and the app is free. Put these together and you have a 10/10 app!

A survey conducted by the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) shows that consumers are more satisfied with their iPhones over any other cellphone hardware. On a scale of 0-100, Apple’s iPhone scored an 83 and they led the pack by a fair margin. Picking up the rear was RIM’s BlackBerry with a least satisfying score of 69.

While some might consider a score in the eighties to be low, no companies have reached that plateau. HTC, Nokia, LG achieved a score of 75, having never reached a score above 80.

Also measured was consumer satisfaction of wireless carriers, where Sprint was the leader with a index score of 71. Verizon, who has seen a steady decline, is now at 70. Satisfaction at AT&T and T-Mobile was 69. The industry has seen a decline overall, save for AT&T who saw a .5% increase.

People lover their iPhones, but their not crazy about their wireless carrier. Unfortunately, you cannot have one without the other.

Sparrow, the alternative to the default Mail app, has been updated to version 1.2. With it comes a host of new features:

Message navigation
You can now navigate all your mailbox messages simply by swiping up and down. When switching from a conversation to another, you’ll see a special separator clearly showing you’re swiping to a new conversation.

Edit and create folder/labels
You can now rename, create, delete all your labels and folders straight from within the app.

Landscape composing
You can now compose messages in landscape mode.

Fluent in 9 languages
Sparrow now speaks English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Russian, and Chinese.

One of the big drawbacks to Sparrow is the lack of support for push, which had been working in a previous version using an API that was outside of the developer guidelines. The developer attempted to curry support from customers in an campaign to convince Apple to make an exception. Apple refused to allow use of the VoIP privilege. A future update is planned, but the implementation of push will require customers to have a yearly subscription. No word yet on what this will cost.
