It’s a minor public holiday, so you know what that means? EA is slashing prices on more games than I care to even think about. A few of these are laid out on the EA Deals blog, but with so many to choose from, there’s hardly space to list them all. For an easy glance at which ones have been dropped in price, look at this list, and any marked “★★MEMORIAL DAY SALE★★” will be reduced.

Interestingly, some apps published but not developed by EA are also on sale, like these titles from Firemint.

Even though Facebook just bought Instagram for a truly astonishing pile of cash, the social network has gone ahead and released its own official photography app. Dunned Facebook Camera, it’s free on the App Store, and is said to be high res, high speed, and full of photo filters.

A totally separate app to the usual Facebook program, Facebook Camera lets you share higher resolution photos more quickly than before, as well as offering multiple image uploads. I think everyone’s still astonished by how big the Pebble Kickstarter was, and it showed off an obviously untapped market for smartwatches. So consider this the first followup in what’s bound to be a slew of new watches that talk to your iPhone. The Cookoo watch trims down significantly on the digital clutter of many a smartwatch, instead relying on an analog face, and six little icons which are illuminated when needed to alert you.

These six icons tell you when your phone is connected, if you have an alarm or reminder, if you have received a text or chat message, when your battery is low, if you have an email, and if you’re getting a call. It’s inherently more limited than some of the reprogrammable watches we’ve seen — like the Pebble — but is slightly more elegant, too.

The Cookoo will also have a programmable button, which can be used to check in to locations, or snap a photo.

It’ll cost you $80 to get the most basic version of the Cookoo, which is a steal for a connected watch, with more colors at higher pledge levels.

Yahoo! has decided to get their toes wet into the browser business, with a new plugin/browser combo called Yahoo! Axis. Designed as a plugin for desktop browsers that connects to an iOS app, it’s a redesigned search engine and page saver all in one.

A key part of the experience is that as you search, instead of just generating a text list of all the results, Yahoo! Axis creates thumbnails of each of the pages, too. Google’s been doing something similar for a while, but in addition to the normal results, not as a replacement.

Search results, saved pages, and more are all shared between iPhone, iPad, and desktop.

Yahoo! was for a time the king of internet searches, so it’ll be interesting to see if this regains them any of the crown.

Main Screen
Believe it or not, the starting screen is tougher to navigate and figure out than the game itself.  Luckily, the Start Game area is the largest – which will allow you to get playing fast if you’re not worried about any of the other setup elements.  If you are, you may want to read the rest of this section.  The obvious linkage to Facebook and Twitter is shown through their respective symbols on the top right.

However there is also a large ‘Crystal’ button.  If you push there, a whole slew of options will appear on the left hand side of the screen.  Crystal is a social game network, just like Game Center from Apple.  The reason this is confusing is because Game Center is also built into this app.  I would enjoy seeing app developers begin to accept Game Center as the iOS gaming standard, instead of confusing apps with multiple social gaming platforms.  As a general rule, I put a strike against any app still employing a separate social gaming platform. The orange, purple, and green buttons along the bottom will link into Crystal’s Gifts, Achievements, and Leaderboard screens.  Enough about the confusing gaming network – let’s just play already.

Gameplay
Fun.  Challenging.  Aesthetically pleasing.  These are a couple of things that come to mind when playing Feed Me Oil.  The music is soothing but still fits the description.  It is something I would picture would be playing if I happen to find myself in a scrap-yard where hills and machines are asking me to feed them oil.  I am not exactly sure what that means, but give the game a try and you may agree.

In fact, the music is reminiscent of Machinarium, another machine game world where oil flows freely.   In Feed Me Oil, your objective is to get the oil from a spout, into an area designated on the screen.  The elements range from blowers to magnets; windmills, wind spinners, gravity field changers, and more.  Put all of this together and you begin to have a highly challenging, fun, and time consuming game on your hands.  Of course the screens are setup similar to all other Chillingo games.  Level packs with multiple levels inside and a star rating to go along with each.

Solve the puzzle without all the provided elements, and you will receive more stars. Eventually you will need to dye the oil, sometimes through multiple dyers to make black oil turn yellow – then purple by heading through a blue dyer.  You can see even color mixing gets added into the challenge!

Hints
If you find yourself completely and utterly stuck on a level, you can start to use Tips.  These will show you, one by one, where to place the elements provided to you.  The catch is that you need to wait some time between tips in order to get the next one.  Impatient?  No problem, just throw down another $0.99 cents and unlock all tips without a wait between.  Even though I usually would recommend against this (I enjoy finishing games myself), Feed Me Oil can get so tricky – levels occasionally become almost impossible to beat without them.

Overall
Even after playing for a few hours, new elements were continuously added into the game as I progressed through more and more levels.  I’m only about half the way through, so I assume there are even more elements yet to be shown to me.  Even after you finish the entire game, you can redo the whole thing with reverse gravity.   This will cost you an additional $0.99 but is most likely worth it.  The cherry on top of this deal is that the app is free! (at least for now).  Get it while you can, buy the unlimited tips feature, and start figuring out these puzzles.  As far as games go – this is a clear 10/10.

Whether it’s burgers, steaks or a combination, the goal of this app is to help you prepare the meat to your liking. You can set the thickness, how you’d like it cooked and have the built-in timer notify you when it’s ready. One of the app reviewers put it best, “I prefer a cold beverage and good conversation when I grill. Having all my settings programmed allows me to focus on socializing instead of constantly looking at my watch and opening the grill top. For me, that’s priceless.”

Apple Beer Marinated Pork Chops, Feta Burger with Red Pepper Aioli. These are the types of fun and tasty recipes included with Grill-It! The app also provides a weekly update with new recipes, direct from the GrillingCompanion website, bringing you a steady stream of new recipes. You could pull these from the website for free, but having having pocket access is certainly worth $0.99. The recipes are easy to follow, but you’ll need a shopping list app to pair with Grill-It. This app is not universal, so it requires you make a decision to purchase for the iPhone, iPad or both.

Available on both the iPhone and iPad, Punchfork is the appized version of the popular website. This app provides you with an easy way to find the best new recipes from popular food sites. Punchfork uses real-time social data to see what’s trending and brings those recipes direct to your iOS device. Searching BBQ will reveal some mouth-watering goodness like the Spicy Whiskey BBQ Sliders.

The visual nature of the app brings the recipes in a magazine format, great for finding that last minute recipe while streaking down the grocery aisles.

Don’t let the promise of Vegan Delight options fool you, this app will also provide recipes that you can take to the grill. You can browse the selection of free recipes, classics or chefs. Select the recipe of your choice and after a short download, it’s provided to you with both written and video instructions.

While recipe books are fantastic, there’s nothing quite like watching along to perfect a recipe. As the sun beats down, who doesn’t enjoy a refreshing beverage. Appetites makes it easy, serving up refreshing options like Strawberry Basil Lemonade from Gaby Dalkin. The ‘Chefs’ section of the app is fun, with the chefs moving around, waiting for you to select them.

If you enjoy recipes from a particular chef, you can access their website from the app or follow them on social networks.

iBooks For Grilling
Hey, there’s nothing like the old traditional cookbook and iBooks modernizes the experience, bring a wealth of cookbooks to your iPad in a matter of seconds. Unlike some the apps mentioned above, iBooks like Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ Book offer more then just recipes, including a bit of grilling history and a number of useful tips that will improve upon your overall cooking. If you are someone who relies on reviews before purchasing a book, shop Amazon and then buy the iBook on your iPad.

If you are new to grilling using apps and iBooks are a great way to learn while making good food. Even experienced grill masters will find usefulness with timer tools and the free USDA reference guide for meat temperatures.
