It’s 2009 and I can safely say that everyone knows someone that’s got ink. Everyone gets it for different reasons. I knew from a young age that I wanted to get something meaningful as soon as I could. When that meaningful thing kept changing, I knew it wasn’t the right time, I wasn’t mature enough and I had misguided preconceived notions of life…ultimately I wasn’t quite there yet. My maternal grandma is about 70 and she has 3 tats that she never ever regrets.. she has said time and again through my life that she was too young (12) and I should wait till I’m older, which I clearly did. I’ll get pics the next time I see her and blog them up.

I toughed out a few family dramas, got over myself, found myself and learnt to love someone else and it was from that moment I knew I was capable of making decisions I wouldn’t regret. My very first tat was late last year and it was something I knew without a shadow of a doubt, I had to have on my body or die a very unhappy person! No pics of that here because it’s an original Messie artwork.. completely trippy and totally sums up my philosophy on life…one day if I can pull off an art show for Messie, the world will see what it is I have on my back.

A couple months ago my Dad and youngest brother were in town for a short trip, we’d talked about getting a ‘Scully’ tat for years… as far back as I can remember. My Dad arrived and immediately assigned the task of designing our font to Messie.. yes yes I was gutted my Dad didn’t think I had the talent to design it.. though I guess that’s what happens when you marry someone like Messie.

So yesterday meant the world to me, when I finally got my Scully tat on my inner left forearm. For me this tat resembles my commitment to my family and the ties that bind, the significance of my intensely tangled family roots and a reminder of who I am. Here it is below.

Here is a quote from a book my Dad gave to Messie in April after seeing his Maori Moko (Tattoo).

“According to the Polynesian cosmogony the gods practiced tattooing under the supervision of Tohu, god of tattooing and creator of the shapes and colors of fishes.

So it was that in order to seduce Hia, a closely guarded maiden, Mata Mata-Arahu and Tura’i Po, two gods whose bodies were covered with bluish drawings, left the Po, the primeval night, and went to meet her.

She succumbed to their charm… and eloped with them.

When mortals decided to imitate the gods, Mata Mata-Arahu and Tura’i Po taught them the art of imprinting tattoos on their skin.

And ever since, humans wear tattoos to obtain favors from the gods and look attractive to their fellow humans.”

This moko was done in 4 sessions with one more to go for touch ups.

Moko tells a story of a persons life, through the people they love, the challenges they face and the strength they hold. The most important factors in Moko is the way it expresses a persons religious beliefs, social, economic and traditional values. Quite often genealogical markers through motifs depicting migrations have helped my ancestors recount their stories of ascendancy and genealogy.

I saw a post today on the launch of their new belts, personally they are not to my taste (to each its own) however I am not their target customer so it’s all cool. I was however a little startled.. did a double take and was wondering if i saw correctly, does one of the belts say “Wild N word Negros”?? or am I being paranoid?
