The Punta Gorda Hibiscus Festival this Weekend May 19th – 20th at Laishley Park

The Punta Gorda Hibiscus Festival committee is proud to announce this years Hibiscus Fest will be held in beautiful Laishley Park on the waterfront in downtown Punta Gorda.

Due to popular demand the festival has been extended to 2-full days, May 19^th and 20^th.

A Saturday and Sunday event with hibiscus flower and tropical plant vendors, live entertainment, food and refreshments in the Park both days, and of course the popular Music Fest on Satuday night.

Nearby local hotels are providing festival rates.

This years event will benefit the Museum Society, a local non-profit that funds the Charlotte County Historical Center on Bayshore Road in Charlotte Harbor.

This is our local museum on the other side of the Peace River from Punta Gorda.

The museum contains many artifacts of our ancient history, including narartives of the native tribes who provided our unique evolution into the colorful names of our local points of interest and historic sites.

Local musicians and bands will be entertaining all weekend. Starting at 9 AM on Saturday, until 10 PM that night, popular groups with a wide variety of music will be playing on stage.

We will have Myakka River Bluegrass Band playing gospel music Sunday morning for those early plant buyers on the way to church.

The full entertainment schedule will be posted at a later date – please check back.

Becky Copenhaver is back organizing The Secret Garden Tours.

Once again we will have five homes in the historic district of Punta Gorda who will open their grounds to the festival for self guided tours.

The Master Gardeners of the Charlotte County Extension Service will provide their expert advice and description of the many exotic plants and landscaping techniques used in those beautiful yards.

They will also answer all questions regarding horticulture and its ability to thrive in Punta Gorda. This is not limited to hibiscus, but all tropical plants.

The Green Hibiscus Trolley will be available to transport you for free to several other historical locations through out the City including The Train Depot, The History Park and Fishermen’s Village.

The trolley, as it makes its way around town to the Secret Gardens, will pass many historic homes. the Driver will givee you highlights.

The 2012 Sweetheart Couples Tournament is scheduled for May 19th at the Laishley Crab House in Punta Gorda.

SWEETHEART COUPLES TOURNAMENT

The 2012 Sweetheart Couples Tournament is scheduled for May 19th at the Laishley Crab House in Punta Gorda.

The Welcome Dinner will be May 18th at 6:30pm upstairs in the Crab House Trabue Room. The tournament will take place on saturday May 19th with the Awards Dinner also in the Trabue Room immediately after the Weigh-In. Entries are limited to 90 couples. This tournament sells out every year so register early. Enries are accepted online and at Laishley Marine in Punta Gorda and Capt. Ted’s Tackle in Pt. Charlotte. All couples registered by May 1st will be entered in a free drawing for a 2 night stay the weekend of the tournament at The Wyvern Hotel (4 Star Accomodations) across the parking lot from the tournament.

2011 Sweetheart Couples Tournament

May 21 at Laishley Crab House

The third annual Sweetheart Couples Tournament was once again a great success. Billed as a fun, friendly weekend of fishing with your sweetheart, the couples tournament lived up to the goal. 62 couples kicked off the event with a special welcome dinner at the Laishley Crab House. During the dinner couples received their gift bags, a custom canvas boat & beach bag with the Sweetheart Couples logo. They also recieved limited edition T shirts, pink for the ladies, white for the guys, also included was a logoed fishing towel provided by Rapid Graphix. The highlight of the evening was the his & hers raffle with a table full of great prizes for the ladies, and a table for the guys too.

Saturday morning, couples were treated to coffee, juice, and donuts in the morning before the 7am start. All of our couples took off in search of 1 trout and 1 redfish to see who would become this year’s Sweetheart Couples Tournament Champions. As the scales opened plenty of couples had at least of of the two required fish. In total,39 couples entered a trout, 36 couples entered a redfish, with 30 teams entering both fish.

Part of the fun of the Couples tournament is the fact that in addition to awarding prizes for the top 10 places, Prizes are also awarded to several random places such as 15th, 20th, and 25th places. Fun awards such as Ladies Heaviest Redfish and Ladies Heaviest Trout and the infamous Couple with the Lightest Weight all add to the fun atmoshere of the event.

After the Weigh-In was complete, all of the couples gathered in the Laishley Park Community Room for an afternoon buffet and Awards Ceremony. But as in any fishing tournament it all comes down to who catches the best fish. This year the title of Sweetheart Couples Tournament Champions go to Brandon Tanksley and Jesse Daughtry who weighed in a combined weight of 9.81 lbs. highlighted by Jesse’s 7.86 lb. redfish.
