Are you getting this error message? I did as well when jailbreaking my iPhone 3G to 2.2 using Pwnage. After re-reading the instructions I realized that I needed to slide a slider in Pwnage to 1000mb for the root partition.

“NOTE: ‘Simple Mode’ in PwnageTool currently only works for the iPod Touch. To use PwnageTool for iPhones you will need to use ‘Expert mode’. This is a workaround while we make an update and fix this issue. In order to do this you will need to navigate to the ‘General’ window and change two things: Deselect ‘activate’ ONLY if you are normally able to activate through iTunes (but if you wish to ‘hacktivate’ the iPhone using PwnageTool then leave it selected). You will also need to change the partition size to about 1000MB (type in the value or use the slider).“

One thing I do that is pretty quick is send an sms text message to phone using AIM from my computer. AIM has the built in ability to send text messages to any phone by just IM’ing the mobile phone number and prefixing it with your country code. +1XXXXXXX . So the next time you want something to read in the umm… restroom just text yourself the link and load the link from your smartphone.

1. Hold bottom HOME button (lower button on the front of the device)
2. Press the top power button.
3. Look in your “Photos” for an area called “Saved Photos”

After the Firefox beta there was the release candidate versions, RC1 - RC3, getting RoboForm to work properly with these and continue to have it work between RC upgrades was a disaster. My friend Steve and I would IM each other asking if one of us got RoboForm to work on the lastest build. Speaking of builds, the  Nightly Builds were even worse, one day it would work the next it wouldn’t.

Now that Firefox 3.0 is out (6/17/08 is the Download Day where they are trying to set a new download record) I thought I’d try to get RoboForm to work again. I attempted to use the Tools > Addons > Extensions and right click on AI RoboForm Toolbar for Firefox and select Find Update. The notice stated that there wasnt an upgrade available. I looked on their website and noticed the following was written on their FAQ:

Q: When will version for new Firefox/Mozilla come out?
A: After the official dot release of Firefox or Mozilla appears on mozilla.org, it takes from 3 to 10 days to add support for this release in RoboForm. We are not given any materials in advance by Mozilla.org. The news of the new RoboForm Mozilla Adapter release will appear on this page.

So I checked out the page they linked to and sure enough under the Manual Install area they had a link to the 3.0 compatible version:

The manual installation worked without any problems what so ever. I did notice the following was written on that page too:

Turn off native browser password managers as they interfere with RoboForm:
* Mozilla/Netscape: Uncheck “Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Password -> Remember Passwords”.

I haven’t tried this yet since I haven’t had any problems with the built in password manager. I guess by leaving this enabled my passwords arn’t as secure as they would be stored in the DB that RoboForm uses since it too is password protected.

KeyCue is a OS X application that binds to the apple / command key and will display the shortcuts of the current application you are in. This was one of the first applications that I bought for my Mac when I did the switch from Windows to the Mac. It really helped with the switch so I could learn all of the short cut keys in the various applications I would be using. As shown in the graphic above all of the yellow text indicates that by pressing only command as the modifier will produce the result listed to the right. While holding down command and pressing another modifier (control, option/alt or shift) the highlighted words will change indicating which functions can be accesses using that combination.

KeyCue is a bit pricey at 19.99 euro ($31.55 US) but for as many times as I’ve used it I think its worth every penny. You can download a trial of KeyCue for 30 days to see if it works for you and your workflow.

  I use Twitter for my day to day microblogging. I talk about what I’m doing and where I’m at and how my day is going. I also auto post to twitter with a link to the blog post I recently posted using Twitter-Tools for wordpress.
• Jaiku Jaiku is like twitter but different. You can post more data to Jaiku along with links and threaded conversations with other users. I don’t use this much but I do have jaiku pull the rss feed from twitter.
• Pownce I do the same thing with Jaiku that i do with Pownce. I not a big fan of this service for some reason.
• Facebook [My Facebook ID] Facebook is a great place to interact with our friends and acquaintances. It allows for many people to interact with eachother using posts, images, videos and 3rd party applications that are created to interface with facebook. I think of facebook as myspace without the annoying layouts and music. Granted you can put music on facebook but not the same way.

Audio

  Jott is a service I was reintroduced to recently at PodCampAZ. Douglas E. Welch was talking about how he uses this to quickly jott (uhm..) now notes using his phone. You call the services record a short voice memo and it will either make it available on the website or email you it. Whats nice about this service is that it transcribes your audio into almost correct text. Like most things like this it isnt perfect and if you don’t annunciate your words you could end up with quite a jumble.
• Utterz.com [My Utterz ID]
  This site is in essence Twitter for audio with a bit of jaiku added for good measure. It gives you the ability to call a phone number and leave an audio post. Once you do that you can tell Utterz to post this to a blog or any other social networking site. You can also MMS an image to go along with your post so people can see what your talking about. This service is becoming very popular with the twitter crowd so they have added cross posting of a link to twitter when you record a new utter. Lately I’ve been using utterz to track my food intake and my exercise during each day for my GeekFit.com Podcast. So far this site seems to be the winner in terms of quickly recording an audio file and getting it out there for people to consume.
• Podango.com Two of my podcast shows are associated with FarPoint Media. They recently switched to Podango as their content delivery service. You make an account on Podango and they provide you with space (hosted by Amazon) for your media files. Downloads are quite snappy and uploading to the service couldn’t be easier. The new version of Podango is currently in beta and many things are changing. There has been a few hickups but most of them have been taken care of quickly by their support staff.

  I learned about this website from a talk at PodCampAZ from Nichole and Marc of The Wood Whisperer Podcast. You upload a video to this service and it will distribute the video to various video hosting services (youtube, blip.tv, etc). So you upload once and it pushes it out to all of these places. It also collects the stats from each of these sites into 1 convenient place.
• Viddler.com [My Viddler ID]
  Viddler is a service that I’m very much into right now. I learned about this service from a talk at PodCampAZ by Clintus McGintus he uses it for all sorts of stuff. Like most video hosting places you upload a video and they host it. Like YouTube you can also record using Adobe Flash and a webcam directly to their site. This works well for quick videos. What I like about it is that you can comment on the video while its playing. So if for instance in the video you want to comment about something just said press the + button on the timeline and leave your comment. Whats cool about this is you can also comment using a video as well. What a great way to interact!

Normally when you do this you need to copy the first line then paste it into the box. Then copy the second line and paste that to the end of your first paste into the box. This time time consuming and frustrating.

To fix this we need to access the configuration screen for FireFox, make a small change:

In the location bar type in about:config. A configuration list will appear. In the Filter field type in “singleline.” You can set the value to 2 for editor. singleLine.pasteNewlines, this will now let you paste multiple lines into a single line input box.

I’ve also blocked this site from emailing anyone at my work and added filters to gmail for incoming emails containing the word quechup.

This technique allows you to remember which voicemails you have used on your show so you won’t have any repeats. I had this happen a few times and I think I have come up with a way to go about this using Gmail’s labels and Star features.

I’m assuming you are using the following: K7 or equivalent voicemail service that emails you the voicemail, said voicemail sent to your gmail account.

1. If you don’t have any voicemails in your gmail account call your K7 line and leave a test message.
2. Wait for the email from k7@k7.net to arrive
3. Create a new label for your podcast voicemails, click Settings on the top left of the site then select the “Labels” tab:
   
4. Create a new Label called “podcast voicemail”
   
5. Click the “Create a Filter” link next to the search box at the top of the screen
   
6. Type in k7@k7.net into the From field, you can put a check box in the “Has Attachment” if you so desire. Then press “Test Search” and when your satasfied press “Next Step >>”
   
7. Check the following boxes: “Star it”, “Apply the label: podcast name voicemail” then press the “Create Filter button”. If you already have voicemails accumulated in your inbox you can check the checkbox that reads “Also apply filter to XX conversations”.
   
8. Now your emails will have a Star next to them and a label applied.
   Click the label we setup for your podcast voicemails on the left under the Labels area and you should see your voicemail listed like so:
   
9. When your preparing to setup the files for your podcast episode you can login to your gmail, select the label called “podcast voicemail” on the left of the screen and all the voicemail will appear. Then once you have download the attachments in the emails for the current episode click the lit up star next to each voicemail attached email. This will tell you that you already used this voicemail in a previous episode.

This is how I keep track of which voicemails I have used on previous episodes. You could get fancy and create a label for each episode named the episode number; then assign them to each voicemail but that may be a bit overkill. At a glance you can see all the star lit emails are unused voicemails waiting for you to play them on your podcast.

I wanted to know what websites are mentioning key words related to me. I have a few podcasts and I’d like to know who is talking and linking to my various web properties or talking about me. By combining RSS with searches you end up with live data thats forever changing and is subscribeable (woah I just made a word up). Blogs and search results are fine but what about spoken word? I’d LOVE to know who is mentioning me or my podcasts on their shows. I’ll cover that too in this article.

Google Blog Search - http://blogsearch.google.com
Blog search is a site that google created that limits it’s results to only blog related postings. One of the reasons why I’m using this is that they provide a RSS feed for their search results. This also means you can do the same using any search engine that provides RSS feeds for their results. First I want to do a search for one of the monikers I use online “abstrakone”:

The results came back with postings at my own website. Lets add a modifier that excludes my own website:

abstrakone -blogurl:abstrakone.com

A few other sites I run are showing up in the results, lets remove them too:

abstrakone -blogurl:abstrakone.com -blogurl:tuckertales.com -blogurl:geekfit.com -blogurl:everythingtech.tv

You can go on and on excluding sites you don’t care to know about or that you already know about and want excluded. After this we can use the generated RSS feed and use it in our feed reader:

On the left column there is a “Subscribe” area one of the selections is RSS, you can use this in your feed reader.

PodZinger - http://www.podzinger.com/

PodZinger is a service that uses speech recognition to archive words spoken in audio and video files. They also allow you to generate an RSS feed for the search results. If you type in some search terms for instance “tucker tales” anytime someone that is listed on PodZinger says those 2 words it will show up in the search results. Once you’ve found the right search results you want you can use the RSS link below the search box in your RSS reader and be able to keep up with all the podcasts mentioning those words.

Putting everything together.

Now that we have a few search results in RSS format what can we do with them? I like to display mine on my google homepage http://www.google.com/ig you can add an element that can pull in RSS feeds and all your vanity searches in one neat little place. Unfortunatly they only allow you to use 1 rss feed. It looks like we need to combine them.

Yahoo! Pipes - http://pipes.yahoo.com
So thats how to do one search engine, what if you want to do it from more than one and combine them? I use google for just about everything, but I’m not a 100% google loyalist. Yahoo a while back created this service called Yahoo Pipes. Pipes allow you to manipulate RSS feeds and output them into various formats. Lately I’ve been using this to combine feeds into one feed with the added bonus of doing some filters using their feature rich filter suite.
*sidenote* I’m assuming you have a yahoo account in this tutorial so if you don’t have one please create one.
Navigate over to pipes.yahoo.com and click on “create pipe” from the side bar then select SOURCES. Drag the Fetch Feed box to the grid on the right. From there in the Fetch Feed box click the + sign next to URL and a box will appear. Paste in the rss feed for your search results on google’s blog search as described earlier. Once thats done click the small circle below the fetch feed and drag the pipe it creates to the Pipe Output box. Look at the bottom area called the Debugger window and the content of the feed will be displayed. Now that we know that works you can go back to the Fetch Feed box and click the + and add some more feeds.

Duplicates

Since some of these services may be seeing the same search result entries you’ll need to remove the duplicates. From the Left area click to open the Operators section and drag the Unique to the right somewhere on the grid. No what we’re going to do is have Unique remove the duplicates and have only the unique results be displayed. Drag the pipe from Fetch Feed to the top of the Unique box and drag the bottom pipe from Unique to the Pipe Output box. You may need to specify which field in the RSS feed to base the uniqueness of off. I use “item.title” which works well for me. Select that from the dropdown in the Unique box.

Filter and Sort

You can filter and sort these results by adding more boxes to the pipeline. Drag Filter from the Operators box and add that into the mix by disconnecting one of the pipes from one of the boxes and connecting the pipe so the data will flow from Fetch Feed then Unique to Filter and then Sort then finally having it go to Pipe Output. You can play with these to your liking. For the Sort box I specified “item.dc:date” as the sort criteria displaying them in the “descending” order, this will show all the new stuff at the top.

Finished with the Pipe

Once your done creating your pipeline you can save it by clicking Save at the top and then select Publish. Once you save and publish it you can click the “Run Pipe..” link in the top middle of the page. This will generate a preview of the content you have mashed up and give you a subscribe link on the right to get your RSS feed or subscribe to this feed at various services such as Google Reader.

iGoogle Homepage - http://www.google.com/ig

Since Google started this iGoogle homepage thing I’ve been using it as my start page in Firefox. Since its one of the first things I look at in the morning it would be a great idea to see what sites are talking about things I’m interested in. By using the power of google, podzinger and other websites then combining them with Yahoo Pipes I can create one feed that can be displayed on my igoogle page.

Click the Add stuff link on the right of the iGoogle page and you’ll be presented with a list of popular gadgets that you can show on your igoogle page. From the top do a search for “customRSS”. Once you find that click the Add it now button. Then click the Back to homepage link on the upper left of the page. Now customRSS should appear. Click the down arrow to the left of the title of the box and select Edit settings. This is where you can specify the RSS feed you want to have displayed. Paste in the RSS feed address from the Yahoo Pipe you created earlier into the Feed URL box and click SAVE at the bottom of the box. Wait a moment and the result will appear.

defaults write -g NSNavPanelExpandedStateForSaveMode -bool TRUE

That’s it—now all new applications you install will use the expanded Save and Save As dialog boxes by default. Keep in mind that OS X remembers your settings on a per-application basis. So if you’ve used the Save or Save As dialog box in one of your current applications and in so doing left it in the simple mode, you won’t see the expanded Save or Save As dialog box even after having entered this command. To change that, the next time you use the app, click on the disclosure triangle to reveal the expanded dialog box before you quit.

If you’re a Windows user and the Mac’s way of dealing with Home and End really bugs you, here’s a tip from Aaron Adams -

To change the Mac’s home and end keys to behave like Windows, create a text file named /Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict (if the folder doesn’t exist, go ahead and create it) and add these lines:

6. On the right of the window click on TRIGGERS
7. I selected F16 to be the button I press to toggle the display on and off. This makes sense to me due to F14 and F15 have to do with the brightness of the monitor.
8. Go up above this area and name this whatever you like “Monitor Sleep” works for me.

Now you can press F16 to toggle your monitor into sleep mode but it will wait 1 minute to execute.

How to make the screen blank instantly??!?!!

That one minute wait was annoying, I wanted instant gratification so I did the following:
Download this screensaver:

Install the screensaver but don’t activate it, you can if you want but we’re going to be executing it directly, so you can keep your flying toasters or whatever you want still enabled.
Find this line from the code above:

Add the following above that line:

This line should end up on all one line, remove any breaks if there are any.

This will enable the 1 minute countdown for the monitor sleep and during that time it will enable the BlackScreen saver.

Aero is one of the cooler features of Vista and you will likely want to enable it, to do this follow the instructions below.

• Right click on an empty portion of your Vista desktop.
• Click personalize
• Click Window Color and Appearance
• Click the link at the bottom of the page that says “Open classic appearance properties for more color options”
• On the scroll list for Color Scheme you will likely be defaulted to Windows Vista Basic after a clean install, choose Windows Aero from the list
• Click apply
• Click OK
• Close the Personalize appearance and sounds dialog box

You should now have Aero loaded and can verify if you are able to see the background of your desktop through the borders of windows open on your desktop.

Recovery:

In order to wipe the files off the device you need to know how to recover them too. A while back I had a 512mb card for my Sony camera and the card started to go bad. I could take pictures but I couldn’t copy them off the device without it freaking out and giving me read errors. I started doing some research and found a bunch of programs that were made to recover such data. One of the programs I used is actually the same program that the slashdot article mentioned; PhotoRec (98,ME,2000,XP, Mac & Linux).

PhotoRec’s website gives a good description of its software:

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (Photo Recovery) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it’ll work even if your media’s filesystem is severely damaged or formatted. PhotoRec is safe to use, it will never attempt to write to the drive or memory support you are about to recover lost data from.

So what I did with my failing card was that I ran this software and pointed it to my card reader, it read the device as a whole and recovered 90% of the images that were on the card. I think something was physically wrong with my memory card thats why I lost about 15 pictures that couldn’t be recovered with this software. For a more “techie” overview of whats being done you can read this article.

There is a number of other programs that do the same thing, some with a graphical user interface such as Digital Photo Recovery which works pretty good too. I tried this one during my recovery process and it had the same results as the PhotoRec software.

Bleaching, wiping & nuking:

Whatever you want to call it, its the process of removing all the data from the file, or overwriting the data with junk to make the files unrecoverable. The big problem with the “format” command on your camera is all its doing is removing the ability to reference or access the files on the card the standard way (navigating to the drive and accessing the files). Erasing is the process of removing the data from the device as I mentioned above. There is a couple of simple ways to go about this, one of which is built into Windows XP Professional.

Go to your Start menu and select Run and type in cmd this will bring up a command prompt. After that you can type in the following:

cipher /w:g:

(g: is the drive letter your memory card has been assigned to in windows)

If you’re not using Windows XP Professional, there are may other options you can use; one of which is Eraser which is part of that Digital Photo Recovery suite I mentioned earlier. If you do a google search for “memory card eraser” this software comes up in almost every search result.

uTorrent with its new Web UI has the answer for you. uTorrent is a great light weight torrent application that recently had some Web UI functionality added to it. The latest beta and a special zip file will enable you to remotely connect to your computer at home (or wherever) and manage your torrent downloads.

Here’s a quick rundown of what needs to be done to accomplish this.

1. You need to download the latest beta of utorrent from here: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=14565.
2. Extract the archive where you want utorrent to live at.
3. Run the exe file from the archive you just extracted.
4. Close utorrent and go to [START] then [RUN] and type in: %AppData%\uTorrent
5. Copy the WebUI.zip file from the extracted archive to the %AppData%\uTorrent folder.
6. Run uTorrent again and navigate to: OPTIONS > PREFERENCES then press the + next to ADVANCED and select WEB UI.

8. You need a way to setup port mapping if you have a router.
9. Once you have your port mapped and accessible from the outside, you’ll need your outside IP address to access the connection remotely. Go to any of these sites on this google search page to get your remote ip address.
10. To connect remotely you’ll need to go to this url: http://REMOTEIPADDRESSHERE:PORT/gui/index.html (replace the bold text with the correct info: ip address from step 9 and port from step 7) and you should get a login prompt. Input your username and password that you inputed in step 7.
11. You should now be at a page that looks very much like the utorrent client.

Now you can download torrents using your remote machine’s bandwidth from anywhere.

2 more things you can try:

• Setup a dynamic DNS such as: dyndns.com. Instead of the IP address you can use this service in case your ip address changes on you.
• You could also setup hamachi on both machines and create a “network” and have both machines join that network and connect remotely via the hamachi IP address.

This tutorial assumes you are using iTunes, some of these suggestions can be used in winamp with a bit of finagling.

As my good friend Steve would say “lets start small”, I’ll break this down a into small chunks and then bring all the chunks together to make a killer playlist. Lets say I want to create a Smart Playlist that generates a list of songs I havent played today.

This is simple by doing the following:

1. Click File then “New Playlist”
2. From here select the following:
1. [X] Match the following rule:
2. [Last Played] [is in the last] [0] [days]
3. [X] Live Updating
3. Name this SmartPlaylist “:Played Today” i prefix my “utility playlists” with a “:” so they show up at the top list, you could replace this with “zzz” or something so they show up at the bottom.

This allows gives us all the songs that haven’t been played today. Now we have a list of all the songs from today, lets make another “utility playlist”  that shows all the songs not played today.

1. Click File then “New Playlist”
2. From here select the following:
1. [X] Match the following rule:
2. [Playlist] [is not] [:Played Today]
3. [X] Live Updating
4. Press OK and name this “:Not played today“

This gives us a list of all the songs not played today. Now you can use these 2 playlists as sources for other playlists.

The next chunk create is to generate a list of all of my favorite songs my Genre. I listen to many different kinds of music but lets say I wanna only listen to Hiphop and its various sub genres.

Mypictr is a website that provides you with the ability to create “social pictures”. You can do so by uploading a picture from your computer, selecting the dimension of the image (or you can use the dropdown to figure out what size most sites use) and then click pictrit to create the image. Once you’re done it will give you a download link or it can email you the image too.

I kicked off the copy of FAST I had on the file server since this machine is Windows 2000 and FAST didn’t come with that version of the OS. You could also use a USB drive or the Windows XP CD to execute the app too, but I choose to have all my tools on the network. After this i told it the app this is the OLD computer and I wanted to save the files to \\fileserver\transfers\inbox\personsname then it began the process of backing up his data to the file server.

Down the road we got his new machine setup its a Windows XP machine running the latest and greatest patches and what not. I loaded up FAST directly off the machine (start > program files > system tools > File and Settings Transfer Wizard). I indicated that this is the NEW machine and then told it the location of the data files: \\fileserver\transfers\inbox\personsname It “bawked” and stated: “Your migration store was created with a previous version of File and Settings Transfer Wizard”. Yay more fun to be had. I started digging online looking for an answer. It looks like there was a patch named: HotFix KB896344 that was stopping me from doing the migration. The new machine isn’t running the 64bit version of XP (which I have heard of some conflicts using this version of the utility to migrate from 32 to 64 bit) so that wasn’t the case. I uninstalled this hotfix by going to (start > control panel > add or remove programs. Then checking the “Show Updates” box to include the windows updates and locating the HotFix KB896344 in the list and uninstalling it. Once that was completed I continued the migration with no more hickups.

If anyone has any reasons as to why this is the case please leave me a comment on this post. I could see this being a problem as stated above going from 32bit to 64 bit, but I don’t see the problem going from 2000 to XP 32bit. *shrug*

This worked very well for me and my photos check out the general map to see everyones pictures.

I found this article on LifeHacker that talked about using Illustrator to create custom graphs from data. You can accomplish this same task using excel, but your very limited to what sort of customizations you can do, by using Illustrator you can do lots of cool stuff. So what is an ID3 tag? Wikipeda states: “ID3 is a metadata container most often used in conjunction with the MP3 audio file format. It allows information such as the title, artist, album, track number, or other information about the file to be stored in the file itself.”

I was putting the finishing touches on the latest GeekFit Podcast which is when I load the file into iTunes and copy over some of the ID3 tags to be used in the current podcast file. I thought I should show everyone how the process works and give a small demo for all to see.

ID3 tags are important for podcasters since most of the time people download them MP3 file without visiting the podcasters site. By putting in all the info you would want your listeners to know into the mp3 file’s ID3 tag you’ve given your listener another way of knowing who made the podcast and how to contact you.

iTunes isn’t THE BEST program to change ID3 tags, but it is a program lots of people use. Later I’ll uncover a few more applications that do this same function and some that even automate the process.

Do you have a specific tag on all of your images that you’d like to remove? Below are instructions on how do delete that tag on ALL of your images.

• Login into Flickr.
• Type in this link into the address bar of your browser:
• http://flickr.com/photos/me/tags/tagtodelete/delete
• (Of course, change tagtodelete to the actual tag that you want removed from your pictures.)
• You will get a confirmation screen.
• Confirm to delete the tag.

1. Dual boot into Windows or use Bart’s PE
2. Start Registry Editor, click on HKEY_Local_Machine
3. Click on File, Load Hive
4. Select c:\Windows\System32\Config\System file
5. Give it a name: MCE
6. Browse to HKEY_Local_Machine\MCE\WPA\MedCtrUpg
7. Change IsLegacyMCE to 1 (ONE)
8. Browse to HKEY_Local_Machine\MCE
9. Click File, Unload Hive
10. Reboot the PC

The method above is the easier way to go about this. If for whatever reason you have an issues you may want to try this other method. This way uses the recovery console to copy the registry file, edit the copy and then copy the duplicate over the original.

1. Insert Windows XP CD.
2. Start > Run > X:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
3. (replace X: with the appropiate drive letter)
4. Acknowledge prompt by clicking ‘Yes’
5. Skip updating process by clicking ‘Cancel’ or by pressing ‘Esc’
6. After installation, acknowledge success msg. by clicking ‘Ok’
7. Start > Shutdown > Restart
8. At boot menu, select ‘Microsoft Windows Recovery Console’
9. Select proper installation to log onto (default: 1) and press ‘Enter’
10. (If prompted, enter Administrator password and press ‘Enter’)
11. Type (without quotes) and press enter: ‘cd system32\config’
12. Type (without quotes) and press enter: ‘copy SYSTEM C:\’
13. Type (without quotes) and press enter: exit
14. At boot menu, select ‘Windows XP Media Center Edition’
15. Start > Run > Type: ‘regedit’ and press enter
16. Click on ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE’
17. File > Load Hive…
18. Browse and select C:\SYSTEM
19. Specify key name ‘BANANA’ and click OK
20. Expand: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > BANANA > WPA > MedCtrUpg
21. On the right-hand side, double-click IsLegacyMCE value
22. Change selected value to 1 and click Ok. (THAT IS NOT AN L!)
23. Click on BANANA subkey (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE)
24. File > Unload Hive. Confirm.
25. Start > Shutdown > Restart
26. At boot menu, select ‘Microsoft Windows Recovery Console’
27. Select proper installation to log onto (default: 1) and press ‘Enter’
28. (If prompted, enter Administrator password and press ‘Enter’)
29. Type (without quotes) and press enter: ‘cd \’

There’s a simple little fix that prevent webpages fro m resizing your Firefox browser that I put in every time. There’s nothing I hate more than a website that resizes my whole browser to the size of a 40×40 ad, forcing me to expand it back to my regular 1024×768 size. To stop this from happening, in the address bar type about:config and hit Enter. Do a search for resize. You will see DOM.disable_window_move_resize. Right click that and choose Modify/Toggle. In the box that pops up, type true and hit OK. Restart the browser and you won’t have the problem anymore. [Source]

Well I found a way and it’s a Firefox extension named: Rip (Remove it Permanently). Rip allows you to specify which areas of a website you want to have “ripped” from the screen hiding it from your view. It obviously does this all client side so the website you’re on has no idea you are doing this.

• Option-Command-Shift-Delete - Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)

Makezine.com is the website for the MAKE magazine which held a fair this last April 22-23 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds in California. From what the website claims over 20,000 “Makers” and “Crafters” attended this event which is a lot of people. People like Bre Pettis did some awesome videos of various Makers showing off their wares and Crafters making some cool stuff too.

I’ve been monitoring Parsed.org via RSS for a while now and I wanted to share this great resource with you all. I’m more of a lurker on Parsed I think I may have submitted a few items. The tips and tricks I have found on there have saved me a few extra keystrokes and some google searches to find the answer to a simple geek question. Parsed reminds me of what you could do with the data from PasteBin.com if you spent some time organizing it and building it into a structured and searchable database.

I interviewed Cyngus and this is what he had to say:

Jason Tucker: First off, where did you get the idea for Parsed.org?

Cygnus: Originally, I wanted to put together a site for posting and discussing parsing problems. This is where the name comes from. I realized that the parsing problem domain is too specific and I decided to open it up to general tech tips. The main motivation for the site was that I wanted a place to put all the little things that I end up looking up every six months. My co-worker Xinu and I started putting a lot of tips in at work, and that’s where most of the original content came from.

Jason Tucker: The backend is ran off of Django. I’ve heard some good things about Django; was it easy to use when you were making the site?

Cygnus: Yeah. I had already used Django for some projects at my job, so using it for parsed.org was an obvious choice. Previously it was run on Zope 2. Zope is fine but it created some considerable maintenance headaches and I looked at the Django rewrite as a great opportunity to add some cool new features and just generally improve the site.

Jason Tucker: You’re a developer by day, correct? How has this website helped you in your day-to-day life?

Cygnus: I’m a software engineer for JanRain, Inc during the day. I probably look things up on the site once a week or so. Sometimes it’s because I forgot something that I don’t use very often, and in other cases I want to refer someone else to a particular tip, or even a whole section of tips.

Jason Tucker: What do you expect others to get from Parsed.org? Are you looking to build a community off of this site, or is it more for close friends?

Cygnus: What I’d like to see is people contributing content to the site while using it as an occasional-to-frequent resource for similar material. The site has a small following, but I’m no advertiser. I’d be very proud to see more people post tips; in my opinion — however biased it may be — parsed.org is one of the better tip sites out there, and there are indeed many.

Jason Tucker: You were telling me you just implemented OpenID for authentication. This should allow for a larger audience to access your site without all the headaches of spammers and other nasties. Was it just second nature to add OpenID support since you work for JanRain?

Cygnus: Initially, I added OpenID support to parsed.org as part of my introduction to the protocol. I figured one way to understand it was to implement it in an application. Parsed.org’s OpenID support uses the JanRain Python library, for sure, but JanRain aside, I still think parsed.org is a great place to use OpenID.

Jason Tucker: Do you have any future plans for Parsed.org that you’re able to talk about?

Cygnus: As far as I’m concerned, the site is essentially feature-complete. I do want to find time to do a few rounds of performance tuning for, say, RSS feed generation and general page rendering. Of course, if people use the site and show a general desire for a feature — like commenting — I’d be happy to spend a saturday evening implementing.

Jason Tucker: Lastly, what is the greatest tip you’ve seen submitted? Which one do you use often but can’t seem to remember?

Cygnus: I’d say that the tip I consult most often is a tip on how to pipe the output of tar over an SSH connection to a remote filesystem. I forget it every time. I have too many favorite tips to
pick just one, but in general I’d say I’m most proud of the section of Screen tips for GNU ’screen’. I spent a lot of time getting screen just the way I like it, and most of the important bits can be found in that section.

I assume you have a website, that your webserver supports the transfer method called SCP. SFTP is supported in WinSCP but you’ll need to test it yourself, if it does work please leave a comment.

  Great program that allows you to tweak your XP setup, disable Auto Updates and remove some unneeded services.
• FileZilla
  I use the non portable version of this awesome and free FTP client software.
• Portable Gaim
  The de facto replacement for AIM, ICQ, Jabber & MSN instant messengers.

PortableApps.com has some cool ones too:

• Portable Firefox
  Take your bookmarks with you!
• Portable OpenOffice.org
  Great for having to edit a word doc or excel doc on the go.
• Portable GIMP
  Never get stuck without a photo editing program again!

Last but not least my most favorite collection of portable apps:

• UberUSB
  One thing to be careful with when using UberUSB is there are some Keyloggers and other applications that may trigger your virus scanner to say you have a virus or other malicious software detected on the device. This isn’t the case since these apps are legit, and have legitimate purpose to some people. Before plugging in a USB Drive with this collection of apps in a corporate enviroment look through the list of apps and make sure you wont get yourself into trouble. Remove any of the apps you dont need or wont be using.

By flashing the firmware of the router using DD-WRT (a modified version of the firmware) you will be able to unlock many features that were either new or restricted on the stock version.

So what does DD-WRT do for me? Well, there’s a number of features but the ones I use are below:

• Hotspot Portal (Chillispot (http://www.chillispot.org/))
• This is great if you want to be a nice neighbor and share your bandwidth.
• QoS Bandwidth Management (Optimize for Gaming and Services / Netmask /
• While sharing the bandwidth above, you can limit these leeches to dialup speeds.
• MAC / Ethernet Port Priority
• This is for QoS so you can set speed rules for each hard wired port or by MAC address
• PPTP VPN Server & Client
• I use this to connect to my home network via VPN. Works very well and is almost foolproof.
• Ntop Remote Statistic
• Lets me keep track of the bandwidth usage.
• Site Survey
• Know your neighbors and other rogue wifi access points.
• Transmit Power Adjustment (0-251mW, default is 28mW, 100mW is safe)
• Does your WiFi signal not make it to the back yard near the jacuzzi? Crank it up so it does.
• Xbox Kaid (Kai Engine (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/))
• If your an XBox player like me and you dont want to pay for XBox Live, this is an alternative to their service.
