Electric vehicle rescues: knowing how to approach the job safely

On an outdoor terrace of McCormick Place, a team of Chicago firefighters ripped open a 2011 Chevrolet Volt as part of a program to demonstrate to first responders how to stay safe when a crash involves an electrical vehicle (EV). This fall, the Volt will be the first extended-range EV to hit the market. It will be followed within months by several offerings from other manufacturers.

Study says consumers want to give electric vehicles a test drive

Forty percent of consumers report they are likely to test drive an electric vehicle, according to a new study of online American adults from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

California legislature green lights 6 more months for hybrid owners to use carpool lanes

Solo hybrid drivers would get another six months to cruise past traffic in the carpool lane but then would have to buy pricey electric cars to keep the perk, under a bill from a San Mateo legislator approved Wednesday by the state Senate.

San Francisco gets $5 million to install electric vehicle charging stations

The San Francisco Bay Area is to get $ 5 million to install 5000 electric vehicles across the region. The funds from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the agency responsible for air quality in the region, will support the development of 3000 home chargers, 2000 public chargers in car parks and at local companies and 50 fast charging stations near highways.

Michigan approved electric vehicle charging rates

Consumers have undoubtedly been itching to get a more concrete idea of what electric vehicles will cost to ‘fuel’, particularly with manufacturer’s guidelines coming in as ridiculously inflated as 367 mpg. Well, Michigan residents now have a look at the costs of electric fueling thanks to a newly approved proposal from Detroit Edison.

What comes first: the car or the charger?

Are electric cars being held back by a lack of convenient charging points? Or do more electric cars need to be produced in order for a demand for electric vehicle charging points to be large enough to justify installing them?

And should charging stations be ones offering a 240V, 30A top-off charge, or should they be fast chargers offering an 80% charge in around 30 minutes?

It's a conundrum that many in the electric vehicle industry have sought to answer for some time. And there's no consensus.

Holy grail of electric vehicles: 30-minute charging

With electric vehicles coming closer to maturity and mass-market adoption, one crucial stumbling block remains in place: limited range made worse by hours-long charging. Consumers may dump the idea of buying an EV with a range of 75 to 100 miles because they can only get so far before needing another charge to replenish the vehicles batteries and at present, fully charging an EV can take hours and even an overnight length of time.
