It's very early to make predictions, but if you pushed me on it—really pushed me—I'd put my money on Manchester United to retain their Premier League title next season.Yes, they've got a new manager in David Moyes. Yes, 26-and-a-half years of Sir Alex Ferguson is a lot to live up to and Moyes will be under intense pressure. And, yes, Wayne Rooney may very well not be there to help him.But what Ferguson leaves behind is a club structure honed for success. His legacy is a mindset amongst the squad and the staff at Old Trafford that has produced prolific success. Providing Moyes taps into it, adds a couple of good players this summer and has a fit Robin van Persie next season, United will triumph.Chelsea's transition to a new manager is unlikely to be as smooth. The same could be said about Manchester City. Tottenham have Gareth Bale, but not enough around him yet.Realistically, that leaves Arsenal, but do we really believe Arsene Wenger can lead his team on a genuine title challenge? I don't.Read more Manchester United news on BleacherReport.com

Next season is a crucial one for Manchester United. With the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and the arrival of David Moyes, change is in the air at Old Trafford. Moyes is not the only notable man coming in, though. The playoff final between Crystal Palace and Watford on Monday will be Wilfried Zaha's final appearance for the Eagles. Officially he is already a United player and he's currently on loan in South London. Next season, he might well be a key part of Moyes' squad.Zaha can play either as a winger or a striker but, given the fact that Antonio Valencia, Luis Nani and Ashley Young all disappointed out wide this campaign, it is on the wing where he's most likely to find himself utilised.Picking a starting XI for next season incorporating the young starlet is by no means a simple task. Each match will be judged on its merits since football is far more of a squad game these days than ever before. Despite this, here is one man's guess at a 4-4-1-1 counterattacking formation in a similar vein to tactics used by Ferguson in some of the biggest games of recent years. There is absolutely no question that the goalkeeper has to be David de Gea. The young Spaniard excelled this term and was rewarded with his first Premier League winners' medal. If the 5-5 draw on the final day against West Brom showed us anything, it is that Anders Lindegaard is nothing like as accomplished as the club's No. 1.The right-back position is another with one outstanding candidate. Rafael da Silva was arguably United's player of the season, adding defensive solidity to his tremendous attacking prowess. Although the team still look at their most solid with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence, the veterans don't quite have what it takes to play twice a week these days. It is highly likely Phil Jones and Johnny Evans, two extremely promising young players, will continue to feature in place of one or the other stalwart on a regular basis. Chris Smalling, if he can maintain his fitness, is another youngster likely to play more often in the years to come. Patrice Evra is still United's best left-back by quite some distance. Although Alexander Buttner has not quite proven to be the disastrous signing some fans feared, he is clearly not up to the standard required in the toughest encounters. With Nani likely to leave and Young as frustrating as ever, one can only hope Valencia's poor form this season has been an aberration. He's the only real candidate for the right wing slot but, on current form, it's safe to say he's the best of a bad bunch. In the centre of midfield, on the assumption that Wayne Rooney will leave rather than reinvent himself as the next Roy Keane, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley are the likely starters. Carrick had a magnificent campaign, his best since joining the club, while Cleverley is another youngster starting to look the part.Though right-footed, Zaha's best chance of a starting place is on the left wing. Ryan Giggs is not getting any younger, and Moyes would be wise to tell his young charge to seize the moment. If his dazzling Championship form can translate to the Premier League then there is much excitement in store.Up front, Robin van Persie, off the back of a marvellous debut season at the club, must start. It might make sense for him to play behind one of Danny Welbeck of Javier Hernandez. Welbeck has been in fine form, but it hasn't quite led to an abundance of goals. On that basis alone, Hernandez just edges ahead of him in this starting XI.The season has only just concluded, and there are likely to be plenty more comings and goings in the transfer window before the Premier League returns. Different games will require different tactics and personnel. For all that, the starting XI described here would win a fair few games, and in style—which is all one can ever ask for as a fan.Read more Manchester United news on BleacherReport.com...

Manchester United officials must be admired for the speed in which David Moyes was appointed manager following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement this month. The quick turnaround prevented gossip and media speculation from overshadowing the side's final couple of games and casting an uncertain cloud over the summer. But it left some baffled—had Moyes always been the club's No. 1 choice for the job? What about Jose Mourinho, the man who had long seemed like the natural successor to Fergie?According to The Guardian, in December last year, Sir Alex himself said that Mourinho had the credentials to one day coach the Red DevilsIn an interview with AS in March, United legend Gary Neville said, "People say here that United want him for the day when Ferguson leaves. City too, Chelsea" according to a report from ESPN."You get the feeling that he is on the point of leaving Madrid, so the speculation has started. England wants him back."So why was he overlooked? Why would Sir Alex say "When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David?" (via The Mirror). Here are the two most likely reasons: A Transient PresenceJose Mourinho has managed six clubs in his managerial career. He has never spent more than three full seasons in one place. He is a man who likes a challenge. When he achieved Champions League glory with Inter Milan in 2010, his mind immediately went to the next obstacle.Part of what made Sir Alex the greatest of all time was his loyalty and devotion to United. He rebuilt countless teams, adapting and transitioning with the new tactical eras. His will to win did not diminish in his 26-year stint at Old Trafford. When searching for his replacement, club officials weren't interested in someone who would stick around for a couple of years, win a couple of trophies then move on. The longevity of Sir Alex's reign will not be replicated for some time, but Moyes has been hired for the long term. The club must avoid falling into the trap that Chelsea have—of hiring and firing with a ruthless whim.Upon Moyes' appointment, Sir Bobby Charlton said via The Mirror, "In David we have someone who understands the things that make this such a special club. We have secured a man committed to the long term who will build teams for the future as well as now. Stability breeds success."Charlton's words are telling—he would have played a key role in determining Sir Alex's successor.Moyes has been a manager for two more years than Mourinho and has managed four fewer clubs. Attitude ProblemsJose Mourinho's career has been littered with mini-feuds and controversies. Most recently, his time at Real Madrid seemed to come to an end under a cloud of unease. In a post-match interview in April, he hinted at quitting Los Blancos, saying, "I want to be where I love to be, where people love me to be..." though was interrupted and not allowed to finish.Former Real club president Ramon Calderon said this week via The Telegraph that Mourinho should never have been hired in the first place. He cited Mourinho's confrontational nature, saying, "All those things are incompatible with Real Madrid history, in my opinion."According to Marca, he has engaged in public disputes with his own players and coaches of other teams. It is understandable that officials at Manchester United would want to distance themselves from such controversy. This week, ESPN reported that a potential reason for Mourinho being overlooked for the United job was the "instability" he would have brought with him to Old Trafford. He is loved at Chelsea for his brashness and narcissism, but these characteristics would not suit a manager of the Red Devils. The landscape of the Premier League will be dramatically altered from next season.Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City will all have new managers. With Sir Alex out of the picture, the Red Devils' rivals will feel they have a better shot at claiming domestic glory.Jose Mourinho will likely end up back at Stamford Bridge, rivaling David Moyes in the other dugout. Many thought he was destined for Old Trafford, but when you stop and think about it, it makes sense that he didn't. Why do you think Mourinho was overlooked for the United job? Should he have been?Bleacher Report's Premier League coverage has been nominated in the 2012-13 EPLTalk awards.

Many Manchester United fans were left scratching their heads when it was announced in January that Wilfried Zaha had been signed for upwards of £10 million.Loaned back immediately to promotion-chasing Crystal Palace, there hasn't even been an opportunity to see the man in action at Old Trafford. There were questions asked about the transfer, the main one being why had so much money been spent on someone who had never played a game of Premier League football before in his career?Zaha remains a bit of an unknown quantity to many. To the fan who doesn't follow Championship action, that is.He is a highly rated prospect—but possessing this tag doesn't automatically guarantee success. This article will analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the Ivory Coast-born, England international and seek to rest minds at ease. This boy is some player. A Gradual Rise to ProminenceWilfried Zaha moved to London from the Ivory Coast when he was four years old.He has only ever been on the books of Crystal Palace. He made his debut for the first team in 2010 aged only 17.The following season, he was a regular at Selhurst Park under manager Paul Hart and his replacement George Burley.Zaha played predominantly on the wing, showing his precocious talent in bursts. He was often criticized by fans of Palace who felt he was a bit of a show pony in his early days, trying too often to beat his man and go for the spectacular. He was far less raw in his second full season, becoming a more all-round attacking threat. In November last year, Zaha made his international debut, playing for Roy Hodgson's England side in a friendly against Sweden.Though he has not featured for the team since, Zaha is undoubtedly a part of Hodgson's long-term thinking. As well as helping Palace to the Championship promotion playoffs, he scored two crucial goals in the semi-final second leg against Brighton. He will now play one last game for the Eagles at Wembley, in the playoff final. What Kind of Player is He?As previously mentioned, Wilfried Zaha is by nature a flying winger. He has been deployed on either flank by manager Ian Holloway, and periodically as a lone striker. He may not look the bulkiest 5'11", but Zaha is a natural athlete. He is incredibly quick and has excellent upper-body strength.Like a young Cristiano Ronaldo, he is never afraid to take on an opposing defender and show off a new trick or two at the same time.At the moment, he is more Nani than Ronaldo—consistency will be the key if he is to succeed at Old Trafford. But the point is that he is capable of beating his man one-on-one, something Ashley Young, the Red Devils' current first-choice on the left wing, isn't.If there are slightly worrying traits about Zaha, it is that he sometimes has a tendency to disappear in games. When this happens, Holloway switches him all over the park to get him more of the ball, but this doesn't always work.Make no mistake, Zaha always wants the ball. He plays the way the game should be—fun. He has great stamina and can run and run up and down the flanks. His defensive ethic isn't great, but that can be taught by the Carrington training staff. His ball control and crossing abilities still need to be worked on, but again, these are flaws that can be ironed out. How Would He Fit at United? It is not yet known how David Moyes will tactically deploy his United team next term. But if his track record is anything to go by, the side will take the form of a 4-2-3-1, with more traditional wingers.Which means that Wilfried Zaha will spend most of his time playing on the left wing, unless there is a drastic change in personnel over the summer, which is unlikely. He is not yet a natural enough goalscorer to play as the lone striker. His brace against Brighton last week was impressive, but he had only scored one goal before that in the Championship since the new year.Over time, it is certainly possible that he could play as a wide forward or striker, but we're talking about what immediate impact he can make here. The Red Devils' wingers have been terrible this season—Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia—no exception. If this worrying trend continues, Zaha should get his fair share of game time under Moyes. The fact that, unlike Young and Valencia, he can play on both wings also aids his cause for regular football. It would be unfair to label him "one for the future." He will play next term, and I am confident he will make an impa......
