While much of the attention is being focused on what will happen in the NBA lottery, there can be potential value in all 60 picks on draft night. Just in recent years, Marc Gasol, Gilbert Arenas, Manu Ginobili and Carlos Boozer are among the players picked in the second round of the NBA draft who went on to become All-Stars in their NBA careers. Last year, the Dallas Mavericks picked up Jae Crowder in the second round, who ended up being a solid rotation player for the club, and Bernard James, who got some playing time at the center position as well. While this may not be a strong draft class up front, plenty of players who are currently projected not to be first-round picks could end up making a serious impact in the NBA.The Mavericks need all the help they can get if they want to get back into the playoff mix, and if they play their cards right, they could end up getting a second-round pick who can help their squad. Here are some potential second-rounders who will be capturing the Mavericks' attention in the next month. C Jeff Withey Depending on where you look, Jeff Withey is either projected as a late-first- or early-second-round draft pick, and if he does slip into Round 2, the Mavericks should do whatever they can to bring him in.The Mavericks are in need of a big man who can make a difference defensively, and that is certainly where Withey could come in.Withey is a legitimate 7-footer who averaged over eight rebounds and three blocks a game at Kansas last year. He is excellent at protecting the basket and could give the Mavericks a great backup, or even starting, center for years to come if he can develop his offensive game. PG Myck Kabongo Myck Kabongo is an under-the-radar point guard prospect who could easily fall into the mid-second round come draft night. However, Kabongo has shown in his college career that he has the ability when he is on the court to be a serious playmaker. Kabongo is an excellent passer and is extremely quick in the open floor, and he also operates very well in the pick-and-roll. Kabongo isn't a good shooter and still needs to get much stronger defensively, which is why he will slip to the second round. However, if the Mavericks can bring him in and slowly build him into the rotation, he could end up being a huge bargain. SF Adonis ThomasAdonis Thomas out of Memphis is a player who could be exactly what the Mavericks are looking for late in the draft.Thomas is a work-in-progress on the offensive end, but the former Memphis standout is an extremely tough and gritty player who can end up being a bruiser defensively. Thomas can use his athleticism to rebound the ball effectively at the pro level, and he could be a player who develops into a stopper if he can work on his perimeter game. The Mavericks already have a player similar to Thomas on their roster in Jae Crowder, but if Dallas decides to part ways with Crowder via a trade in the offseason, it would be nice to have Thomas there to take on that role. PG Nate WoltersNate Wolters may end up being limited on the defensive end and needs to bulk up and improve his quickness if he wants to make it in the NBA.However, one thing is for sure, Wolters can flat-out score the basketball.Wolters can shoot from distance, get into the lane, hit free throws, and he also has the ability to get his teammates involved in the game.He has a great presence on the court and a high basketball IQ. It would be smart for the Mavericks to at least consider Wolters if he is still on the board when Dallas picks in the second round. C Dewayne Dedmon If Dallas still finds itself without a big man in the second round, it may want to look into USC big man Dewayne Dedmon.Dedmon without a doubt had a disappointing college career. He never made the impact that many believed he would in SoCal and has big strides ahead of him if he wants to make it in the NBA.Still, Dedmon has serious potential, especially on the defensive end. Considering that he didn't even pick up basketball until age 18, Dedmon has come a long way and should only continue to improve.Make no mistake, Dedmon is a project, but with his shot-blocking ability to go along with his athleticism, he could be worth taking a flyer on in the second round. SG Vander BlueAnyone who watched Marquette's run to the Elite Eight in last year's NCAA tournament can tell you: Vander Blue can straight-up play.Blue's jump s......<div class="feedflare">

After falling to the Indiana Pacers four games to two in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, it's clear that the New York Knicks lacked the firepower and the wherewithal to make a championship run this spring.A mountain of pressure was put on Carmelo Anthony to carry the club, especially in this physical second-round series. He gave it his best effort, but it fell short, and he didn't get enough help.Indiana exposed New York on many levels, chief among them being an overreliance on the jump shot and an inability to handle a paint-oriented opponent that possessed size.Mike Woodson's veteran guards were overmatched, his energy post players Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin were too one-dimensional, and the isolation-based play of 'Melo and J.R. Smith was often detrimental.Entering this offseason, the Knicks must take a good, hard look in the mirror and ask whether the team as its currently comprised can challenge for a title in the near future.Changes definitely need to be made, but how much and at what positions?Chief among the dilemmas is whether to keep J.R. Smith long term, and whether to hang on to many of the veteran role players. He put together a brilliant regular season to help the Knicks earn the No. 2 seed; however, his incredibly inefficient shooting ruined New York's chances to advance past Indiana.Signing the veteran reserve to a few more years would likely cost more than they're paying him now, and I don't know if the New York brass is ready to commit to a volume scorer who's quite one-dimensional.If you're asking me whether keeping him is going to help them win a championship within the next couple seasons, the answer is no.Smith was an exciting scorer and a handy guy to have around during 'Melo's brief injury absences. However, his style of play is part of the reason New York struggled to topple the underdog Boston Celtics and failed to upend the Pacers. The decision to let him go is only part of the equation. There's also the question of what to do about guys like Jason Kidd (signed through 2015), Marcus Camby (signed through 2014) and Pablo Prigioni (restricted free agent in 2013).Not all of them can stay, and they certainly can't be a major part of the team's future plans. Although Kidd and Prigioni were effective for much of the season, they were exposed in the playoffs and are both miles past their primes. The main obstacle that makes New York's offseason alterations and potential additions so difficult is the massive percentage of payroll consumed by Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire.'Melo is obviously going nowhere. Amar'e is the star Knicks fans would love to shed. General manager Glen Grunwald would get rid of Stoudemire in a heartbeat if he could find a good deal for him.Good luck with that.Stoudemire is owed more than $45 million over the next two seasons, and since the Knicks already used their amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups in 2011, the only way to unload him is via trade. That's a tall order, because his bloated salary and injury-plagued past aren't attractive to anyone. Most NBA trades need to match up financially, and it's just not worth it for potential suitors.Ultimately, New York's front office needs to deliver another offseason of tricky maneuvering in order to make the club better in 2013-14. Can it add an affordable forward like Elton Brand or DeJuan Blair to bolster the roster, or will it come up empty-handed?Change is necessary, because the current composition of the squad can't lift the Knicks through the East.

The Indiana Pacers eliminated the New York Knicks in Game 6 on May 18, giving themselves a chance to prove they've grown enough over the past year to do more than make a decent showing against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.LeBron James and Co. knocked the Pacers out of the postseason in six games last year, but the team that fell in the Eastern Conference semifinals hardly resembles the one that'll be taking the floor this time. Changes in personnel and philosophy, not to mention the general maturation of the club, have created a Pacers team that is far better equipped to handle the imposing Heat. For starters, the player who made headlines for all the wrong reasons during last year's postseason run is making them for the right ones this time around.Lance Stephenson got plenty of attention for making a "choking" gesture toward James in Game 3 of last year's series. At the time, Indiana's shooting guard was little more than an end-of-the-bench reserve. In fact, he logged a grand total of seven minutes in the six-game series between the Pacers and Heat last year. Now, though, Stephenson is a starter and an integral part of what Indiana does on both ends of the floor. His hustle sets the tone for Indiana's scrambling defense, and even though he's not the most skilled offensive player, he has proved himself capable of doing serious damage as a cutter and in transition. If the Heat have any doubt about how much Stephenson has grown, they'll only have to look at his Game 6 performance against New York, in which he piled up 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists on 9-of-13 shooting.Plus, he's gone nearly a full year without giving a "choke" sign to any opposing superstars. Clearly, he's learned to let his play (and not his sophomoric gestures) do the talking.Stephenson's not the only Pacer to have experienced major growth since last year's postseason clash with the Heat.Paul George was officially recognized as the NBA's most improved player this year, an honor he earned by taking on the leadership role vacated by an injured Danny Granger. George developed into one of the NBA's premier perimeter defenders during the 2012-13 campaign, and his value as a defensive option against James can't be overstated. In last year's series, George was only the Pacers' fifth-leading scorer, accumulating nearly as many personal fouls (18) as made baskets (19).In his most recent postseason action, though, George has proved that he's become nothing less than a dominant two-way star. In the just-completed series against the Knicks, George averaged 19.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and five assists per game while hounding Carmelo Anthony into a number of ugly shooting performances. And during the 2012-13 season, George did a better job than anyone in his efforts to slow James down. Nobody can handle LBJ alone, but George now comes closer than most.Speaking of defense, one of the biggest things the Pacers have learned over the past year is that they'll go as far as their scheme and defensive discipline can take them. Two years ago, Indiana allowed 100.4 points per 100 possessions, which ranked 10th in the NBA. But this past season, Frank Vogel somehow got his team to buy into his defensive plans hook, line and sinker. The result has been a team that almost never permits open threes from the corner or easy looks at the rim. George Hill, Stephenson and George are now experts at running shooters off of the line and forcing them into Roy Hibbert's space, where the big man gobbles up penetrators like a 7'2" "Hungry, Hungry Hippo."Put those things together and it's easy to see why Indiana made an improvement of nearly four points per 100 possessions and easily led the NBA in defensive efficiency in 2012-13.Objectively, Indiana is not yet on Miami's level. The Pacers' bench is still woefully thin, and if the Heat push the tempo at all, Hibbert loses a great deal of his effectiveness. All that notwithstanding, the Pacers did take two out of three from the Heat this year, including an impressive 87-77 win on Jan. 8 in which George outscored and out-rebounded James.Ultimately, the Pacers have learned a few things since they fell to the Heat in last year's playoffs. But more importantly, they've seen their young players blossom, their defense morph into an elite weapon and their confidence explode. All season long, it has seemed like the Pacers were the team that could give Miami the best run for its money in the East. Now, a year older and still nursing...<div class="feedflare">

The New York Knicks, once thought of as the top threat in the East to defeat the mighty Miami Heat, are out of the playoffs. And they have one of their own to blame, following Saturday’s 106-99 Indiana Pacers win and series conquest in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Lance Stephenson grew up in Brooklyn hating the Indiana Pacers. After a rough start to NBA career, though, he grew into loving working for his adopted hometown and Pacer team, and he was likely more than cognizant of the criticism that arose from his time spent as Indiana’s top backcourt penetrator during the team’s Game 5 loss against the New York Knicks on Thursday. With George Hill out, the Pacers needed someone to step up on the perimeter, and Stephenson (13 points on 13 shots) could not step up. Game 6, however, was about as “up” as steps come.
Even with George Hill in the Pacer starting lineup, Stephenson put up a career-high 25 points in the contest, topping his previous playoff-high in points by halftime by dropping 16 on the Knicks. Working between New York’s smallish lineup, the former University of Cincinnati guard also weaved his way toward 10 rebounds in just 34 minutes, his fourth double-digit rebounding game of the postseason. And though the Knicks reverted to their old, winning ways – a small rotation, plenty of three-point attempts – the team just could not keep in front of the younger Indiana Pacers.

Though he was mostly shut out of the fourth quarter, mostly, this wasn’t Carmelo Anthony’s fault. From the outset of the game it was apparent that the Knicks coaching staff was attempting to make Anthony’s mid-post looks a priority, and throughout the game the MVP-vote garner used his touch and savvy to out-duel an all-world defender in Paul George. Anthony tossed in 39 points on 29 shots before the Pacer defense decided that Carmelo Anthony, alone, was not going to send them to a Game 7 in New York.
Initially, the Pacers chose incorrectly, as the Knicks responded with a flurry of three-pointers from Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, and Chris Copeland. The Pacer defense, ranked tops in the league for the better part of the 2012-13 NBA season, adapted. New York scored just 18 points in the final quarter of their season, as Stephenson tossed in some opportunistic makes, David West found some cutters with timely passes, and the Pacers earned trips to the line.
And before Knick fans and NBA know-alls toss the final tally in Carmelo Anthony’s face, they should understand that the Indiana Pacers are a better basketball team than Carmelo’s New York Knicks. The outcome of this series, is the correct one.
Part of that, in a weird way, is Carmelo’s fault. He demanded a trade to New York that saw Isiah Thomas (unofficially, as he was technically not a Knick employee at the time) inspiring a depth-killing deal from Denver to New York that gave Anthony both a maximum-level contract and very little room around him save for his fellow eight-figure earning teammates in Amar’e Stoudemire (two points in less than six minutes in Game 6) and Tyson Chandler (two points, six rebounds, and six fouls in less than 23 minutes). The Pacers’ bench is hardly inspiring, but Indiana’s rotation still had enough to circle the wagons when Anthony appeared to be well on his way toward winning the game by himself in the third quarter.
Indiana wasn’t bothered, though, which is impressive for a team that went into Saturday afternoon not knowing if George Hill could even suit up for the rest of the series; while potentially tailing off a year that was spent mostly without former All-Star Danny Granger. Roy Hibbert spent the better part of two months shooting less than 40 percent from the field. Coach Frank Vogel probably walks the streets of his own city without recognition. A guy named Sam Young, somehow, was crucial for key parts of this game. And yet the team is four wins away from its second NBA Finals appearance in the team’s post-ABA history.
The Knicks boast six former All-Stars, the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award, and the NBA’s sixth-highest payroll. This loss isn’t a damning indictment of going after big names and top salaries, though.
The Indiana Pacers, a team that sent all five of its starters to the podium following Game 6, were just the better team. And prior to their Game 1 matchup with the Miami Heat on Wednesday, you’ll have a small bit of time to learn their names.<div class="feedflare">

With just over five minutes remaining and facing a two-point deficit in their pivotal Game 6, the Indiana Pacers had precious little time to put the New York Knicks away and even less momentum with which to do it.That's where Roy Hibbert came in. The All-Star center delivered his fifth and finest block of the evening, this time against Carmelo Anthony&mdash;who wound up with 39 points in his club's 106-99 loss to the Pacers. To say nothing of what the block seemed to inspire among Hibbert's teammates, it was an impressive physical display in its own right.Anthony had the ball all but dunked, attempting to muscle it through even after Hibbert's big mitt got in the way.
Roy Hibbert's 5th block of the night on Carmelo Anthony may just end up in the #SCtop10.&mdash; SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) May 19, 2013
After the game, coach Frank Vogel described Hibbert to reporters as, "the best rim protector in the game," an arguable point that's a lot harder to argue after Saturday's clutch rejection.More importantly, though, the defensive stand fueled a club that had grown sluggish and allowed the Knicks back into the game after controlling it throughout the first half. Indiana outscored New York 16-7 over the course of those final five minutes, a veritable offensive explosion by this series' standards.
Roy Hibbert's block changed the entire outcome of the game.. Extraordinary timing against a star closer around the rim..&mdash; Kevin Negandhi (@KNegandhiESPN) May 19, 2013
Even Anthony knew this was no ordinary block.
Melo: "It was a helluva block, big play by Hibbert...That block I think spearheaded that momentum run that they made."&mdash; Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) May 19, 2013
Just as it's done throughout the season, Indiana prevailed because of its defense. It may not look that way after dropping 106, but getting to that 106 might not have happened without Hibbert changing the tone in this one.Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com<div class="feedflare">

The Miami Heat have won eight of nine games to start the 2013 NBA playoffs. That's not a surprise. But some of the reasons they've had such success might be a little unexpected.Miami is rebounding the ball well, but now turning the ball over. Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers and Ray Allen have struggled from beyond the arc, but Norris Cole can't miss. So, let's play a little game of fact or fiction with these mentioned seemingly surprising elements of Miami's postseason, and others, and determine if these trends will continue.
Game 6 was an emotional roller coaster for both the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. Each team went on runs that looked to put the other away, but in the end, the Pacers ran away with the game and the series, 106-99.The Pacers looked to have things in hand through the first half, but an outrageous three-point bonanza got the Knicks right back into the thick of things. It was only some lockdown fourth-quarter defense, holding New York to just 18 in the final frame, that pushed the Pacers to the next level. Carmelo Anthony put up 39 on 15-of-29 shooting, but that won't be what New York fans remember. Anthony scored just four points in the deciding quarter, as the Pacers pulled away. The Pacers' bruising style is what won out in the end, with Roy Hibbert and Paul George making clutch defensive plays and pounding the paint on offense. Hibbert went for 21 points and 12 rebounds, contributing majorly to the Pacers' 52 points in the paint.George finished with 23 points, going 9-of-15 from the field. He also contributed a fair amount to J.R. Smith's 4-of-15 performance.Neither player was the biggest story of the night, however. It was New York-born Lance Stephenson who had the clutch play to grant the Pacers a conference finals berth.Stephenson missed only four shots en route to a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. He was relentless through the final buzzer, scoring nine points in the final five minutes. The Pacers rode some of the best basketball Stephenson has played in a while to a 55-47 lead at halftime. the young shooting guard put up 16 points and seven rebounds before intermission. That included a tough three-point play with seconds remaining. The Knicks went on a three-point shooting barrage late in the third quarter. Iman Shumpert netted three straight from beyond the arc, and J.R. Smith's trey with 3:10 remaining knotted things up at 72.Another Shumpert trey tied things up at 79 with 48 seconds left. That bucket gave Shumpert 16 points in the quarter, and 19 overall, the most he had scored since March 13. From there, Anthony and George traded hoops to make things 81-81 entering the fourth quarter. The three-point bombardment continued with Chris Copeland in the fourth quarter. His second trey of the quarter put the Knicks up 87-84 with 10:10 to go.The two teams continued playing their own games through the fourth. The Pacers worked things inside for layups at one end, while Smith netted yet another three for New York. Hibbert came up with a monster block of an Anthony dunk and then had a layup at the other end. Stephenson's and-1 with 3:55 remaining pushed the Pacers ahead 95-92.Stephenson again attacked the rim, and this time drew Tyson Chandler's sixth foul. Chandler's game hadn't been going well as it was, with just a minus-16. He took his two points and five rebounds to the bench for the remainder of the game. Stephenson made both freebies, putting Indiana up 97-92Stephenson just kept it coming, while Anthony committed three straight turnovers. Smith got a pair of free throws to bring New York within four, at 101-97 with just 1:15 remaining.Anthony got to the rim for a dunk, possibly the only easy shot he had all night. The bucket put the Knicks down four, 103-99 with just 49 seconds to go. It was only Anthony's second basket of the fourth.Copeland missed a three with about 30 seconds remaining in the game. However, the Knicks waited until there were just nine ticks left to foul.George went to the line with the opportunity to really ice the game over. Unfortunately, he bricked both freebies, but, like they had done all night, the Pacers got another rebound. Sam Young came up with the grab and hit one of two free throws, finishing off the Knicks for good. The Pacers advance to face the waiting Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com...<div class="feedflare">

Only one team will ultimately win the NBA title. The number of teams who can potentially claim that gradually dwindles down, as now only four teams can make that claim. That doesn&rsquo;t mean every team failed, though. Every playoff team has its own finest hour. One team&rsquo;s accomplishment is another team&rsquo;s disappointment. For one team, merely being in the postseason defies expectations, while for another, winning a title is this year&rsquo;s goal. For more, it&rsquo;s getting one round further than the previous year. Regardless of who they are, every team had that moment, that shot, that run, or that little stretch of games where they believed, surpassed expectations, and were greater than the sum of their parts. Since accomplishments can&rsquo;t be compared or ranked because of differing expectations, they are listed in alphabetical order.
As the 2013 NBA playoffs inch ever closer to the finals, some of the league&rsquo;s biggest stars are out for redemption. The Miami Heat&rsquo;s big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh aren&rsquo;t on the list of players out for &ldquo;redemption,&rdquo; because they won it all last season. They&rsquo;ll certainly be under a great deal of pressure. Therefore, proving they&rsquo;re the best again by establishing league dominance is their goal over redeeming anything. Players on teams that have been counted out all season long, however, will be looking to prove themselves. The Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs will battle it out in the Western Conference Finals, while the Indiana Pacers will move on to face the Heat. NBA teams remaining in the postseason have already proven a great deal, but a collection of players are out to redeem events of the past.Begin Slideshow<div class="feedflare">

Midway through the fourth quarter of Game 6 and with the Knicks surging and clinging to a two-point advantage, Carmelo Anthony drove baseline and elevated, almost certainly expecting to finish this dunk over Roy Hibbert to further extend his team&#8217;s lead. Hibbert got there first, however, and met Anthony at the rim for this monster&#8230;<div class="feedflare">

The 2013 NBA playoffs are just one round away from the crowning of this season's champion. As the conference finals take shape, however, each and every one of our legitimate title contenders are tasked with overcoming significant weaknesses. The question is, what is it that could bring down these respective teams? The Western Conference finals are set in stone, as the veteran San Antonio Spurs will take on the defensive-minded Memphis Grizzlies. This is a rematch of their legendary first-round series from 2011, when the No. 8-seeded Grizzlies upset San Antonio. The common theme? Rudy Gay wasn't present then, and he's no longer with the team now.In the Eastern Conference, the Miami Heat have advanced, as expected, and will await their competitor. The options are the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, who both thrive defensively but play a different brand of offense.Regardless of which team Miami draws, each have their own weaknesses. No one is invincible. Memphis Grizzlies: Perimeter ScoringRegular Season Record: 56-26Postseason Record: 8-3Key Statistic: 4.7 3PT FGM (30th) The Memphis Grizzlies are a dominant defensive force, pairing perimeter brilliance with interior power. From Mike Conley and Tony Allen locking down the guards to Tayshaun Prince controlling the corners and Marc Gasol defending the rim, there's little that Memphis can't do defensively. On offense, however, there's one thing they're helpless with&mdash;shooting the three.Conley leads a group that can shoot, but the issue isn't what they're capable of. The issue is that Memphis has no go-to shooter, nor does it possess a player that can counter a three-point attack from another team on a consistent basis.Going up against a San Antonio Spurs team that ranked seventh in three-point field goals made and fourth in three-point goal percentage, that could be disastrous.Memphis finished the 2012-13 regular season with an average of 4.7 three-point field goals made per game. Not only was that the lowest number in the league, but the Grizzlies were the only team to make less than 5.4 per game.It doesn't help that they were 24th in three-point field-goal percentage. Miami Heat: ReboundingRegular Season Record: 66-16Postseason Record: 8-1Key Statistic: 38.6 RPG (30th) The Miami Heat are the best team in the NBA, both by measures of advanced metrics, personnel and victories. With that being said, there is a significant area that the Heat are the worst in the league.Rebounding.During the regular season, Miami was dead last in rebounds per game at 38.6. They were 28th in offensive rebounds per game, as well, at 8.2 per contest. They were one of just three teams to grab less than 9.0 offensive rebounds per game.Perhaps most dangerous of all, Miami was 20th in opponent offensive rebounding at 11.2 allowed per contest. This has resulted in their ranking of 29th in opponent second-chance points scored (via NBA.com).For a team that approaches perfection with every performance, there is one area that could be their ultimate undoing. San Antonio Spurs: AthleticismRegular Season Record: 58-24Postseason Record: 8-2Key Statistic: 14.2 fast-break points allowed per game (24th) The San Antonio Spurs are a veteran team with an abundance of three-point shooters, a dominant interior presence, a legendary head coach and depth at every position. With that being said, the Spurs are also a team that thrives on finesse more so than power or athleticism. That's not a flaw, but here's what is&mdash;San Antonio just isn't athletic enough to maintain an up-tempo pace throughout the postseason. When things slow down, the Spurs are one of the most dominant defensive teams in the NBA. They allow just 96.6 points per game, are ranked eighth in opponent field-goal percentage and have the length to contain the three-ball.With that being said, there's one number that speaks volumes to their makeup&mdash;San Antonio was 24th in opponent fast-break points (via NBA.com).The Memphis Grizzlies shouldn't pose too much of a threat in this instance, but the Miami Heat and New York Knicks are threats. Both teams get out in transition and attack the basket, both punishing the rim and pulling up for the three-ball.For a Spurs team that dominates in the half court but struggles when the pace picks up, it's imperative that San Antonio slows it down from hereon out.Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com...<div class="feedflare">

Regardless of whether or not Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce return next year, it's obvious that the two key pieces of the Boston Celtics' future are Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green.Rondo, 27, will be the clear-cut best player on the team once Garnett and Pierce leave. It's no secret that a Celtics rebuild hinges on his ability to teach a group of youngsters and lead by example, and some wonder if Rondo has it in him to do that.Green, 26, demonstrated his ability throughout the 2012-13 campaign. We saw him erupt for 43 points against the Miami Heat and then average 20.3 points per game in the playoffs. The question with Green is not if he can do it; it's if he will do it consistently.Let me preface all of what I am about to say by stating this: Boston needs more than just Rondo and Green. In this day and age, teams absolutely need a reliable third piece in the NBA. Unless they have a Shaq and Kobe-type of duo (and I don't see anything currently in this league that even begins to resemble that), the teams must have at least three dependable scorers to have a shot at a title. Now, taking that into consideration, the answer to the original question is a reluctant yes.I say the word "reluctant" because it is strongly predicated on the C's finding that third wheel. Maybe that third wheel is already on the team. Perhaps it is Jared Sullinger, who also figures to be a significant part of a Celtics rebuild. No matter who it is, Rondo and Green need some support, preferably being in the form of a big man. That being said, having Rondo and Green is undoubtedly a nice start.Rondo is unquestionably one of the best point guards in the game, possessing otherworldly floor vision and a tenacity that few players in the league actually have. He is also incredibly unpredictable, making him all of the more dangerous, especially out in the open court.Green is a Swiss army knife. He can shoot from the perimeter, put the ball on the floor, explode to the rim and post up. He is also a fine defender, displaying solid shot-blocking prowess this past season and a knack for playing tough, physical defense on opposing small forwards. Green's versatility allows him to man both forward positions, creating mismatches at both spots. What Celtics fans must understand is that this is going to be a rather difficult transition. No matter how effective Rondo and Green are, they are not going to be as dominant as the combination of Garnett and Pierce (not to mention Ray Allen) was when the Big Three first formed in Boston back in 2007. That was essentially a once-in-a-lifetime type of team that we'll be lucky to witness again in the near future. So, Rondo and Green will be good. Just not that good. Then again, who knows? As has been said ad nauseam, if the C's can add another star to the club while also filling out the rest of the roster, Rondo and Green can do special things. After all, we already know that Rondo and Green will likely comprise a great tandem, given Rondo's affinity for getting out on the break and Green's propensity to run the floor like a gazelle and throw down monster slams.Rondo also has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He definitely heard all of the chatter about the Celtics being better without him this year. People said that Boston's offense actually ran more smoothly sans No. 9, stating that Doc Rivers' squad shared the ball more and ran quicker, crisper sets.Of course, that talk was thoroughly disproved in the playoffs, as the C's' offense came to a grinding halt without their floor general. Don't think that means Rondo has forgotten all of the criticisms that were thrown his way, however. The ACL tear could serve as sort of an awakening for Rondo. When tragedy strikes, you really stop and put things into perspective, and we can only assume that the point guard did that and more while watching his brothers go into battle without him from Jan. 27 through the rest of the season.Green has that chip, too.The four-year contract he was given by the Celtics last summer was chastised by many, especially by former ESPN writer John Hollinger. Hollinger, who is now the vice president of basketball operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, called the deal (ESPN Insider required) "without a doubt, the worst contract of the summer."How about a personal apology to Jeff, John? While Green does not have the type of stubborn personality of Rondo, you can bet that he has taken Hollinger's words&mdash;as well as the comments of everyone else who doubted him&mdash;to h...<div class="feedflare">

Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry have bowed out of the NBA playoffs, but don't worry; there are plenty of NBA superstars left to grade. The usual suspects are all here, as well as a few unappreciated names who very much deserve recognition as elite players. Because these guys have all led their teams deep into the playoffs, there are bound to be some high marks. And remember, these report cards are based on the totality of each player's postseason contributions. As we approach the midway point of the postseason, the stakes are higher than ever. So no matter how high these stars grade out, they'll all have to raise their games going forward.Let's get to it.Begin Slideshow<div class="feedflare">

Spike Lee's persistence finally paid off: The New York Knicks' most ardent (and visible) supporter managed to secure a pair of tickets to Game 6 in Indianapolis. You might remember that his efforts to score seats didn't work out so well last time, as an Indiana Pacers season-ticket holder somewhat awesomely turned down the director's offer to purchase his courtside tickets for $40,000.The Pacers apparently took Lee's money this time, but they didn't miss an opportunity to show their displeasure at his presence. There would be no free swag for the only New York fan in the building:Lee has been through the war between these two teams since the beginning, so he was smart enough to bring a human shield into the hostile environment with him:I don't know who the kid in the picture is, but you can bet he's there to deter insults&mdash;and possibly a few projectiles intended for Reggie Miller's mortal enemy.Speaking of which, Lee has been taking every opportunity to irritate Miller, popping up on camera in more than one instance behind the former Pacers great. Reggie might have been the king of the long bomb, but Lee is proving to be just prolific in the "photo" and "video" categories. In addition to terrorizing Miller, Lee has come up with some pretty odd ways to motivate his favorite team. Anything to get a win, huh, Spike? Not every Knicks fan is quite so "enthusiastic," though. It's great that Lee is such a diehard supporter of his team. There's no question about his devotion. It would just be nice if he didn't have to snatch the spotlight so often. The rest of the fans in Indy are there to enjoy a game&mdash;not to suffer retinal damage from Lee's neon, Hi-Liter-toned apparel.Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com<div class="feedflare">

George Hill will play in Indiana’s crucial, and potentially series-deciding, Game 6 against the New York Knicks on Saturday.
“We did everything by the book,” Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel told the media in the hours before his team’s match with the Knicks. Vogel told the media that his team’s medical staff, in concert with the NBA, put George Hill through all the proper paces as he recovered from a concussion suffered in Game 4 of his team’s series against the New York Knicks. Hill missed Game 5 because of that concussion, surprising most who witnessed both his brilliant play during the Game 4 win and affable demeanor post-game.

The NBA’s concussion policy is lightly defined, when it comes to choosing a number of games a player can sit out for; but what is known about the policy is the stringent, recently-made, tests that players have to go through. Whether the player in question enjoys the tests or not, the NBA runs an exacting standard of procedures put in place to determine if the athlete in question is fit to compete in a safe environment that would not leave the player in question prone to future head injury.
We hope that’s the case, at least. Saturday’s Game 6 is an important game, full of intrigue and season-deciding drama. What’s most important, though, is Hill’s long-term health. Brain “injuries” aren’t about gutting anything out; and it isn’t as if Hill (who was already dodging elbows from the likes of players like Tyson Chandler well before his concussion) was shirking his responsibility in Game 5.
We just hope his ability to suit up for Game 6 stems from a good report from a doctor that has nothing to do with the NFL, and that this is the last time we’ll ever have to discuss a head injury to George Hill.<div class="feedflare">

By winning Game 5 against the Pacers, the Knicks have turned their series. After it seemed Indiana had a decided advantage, each remaining game is basically a tossup.
As the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs are set to square off in the Western Conference Finals, there's a ton of different opinions on every aspect of the game.Ask any basketball fan and they'll give you their opinion on who is going to win, who is the series X-factor, which team has the better frontcourt, which style of play will dominate the flow and whether or not the series is as interesting as it could have been.Sure, it would have been neat to see the Los Angeles Lakers actually work out well together and play the completely healthy Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, but where's the fun in that? While the Grizzlies-Spurs matchup is nowhere near surprising, given the way the postseason has unfolded, a similar prediction at the beginning of the season would have been a long shot. Here we have the Grizzlies, playing a style of basketball that has yielded over 100 points just four times in 11 playoff games, taking on the Spurs, a mythically "boring" dynasty.San Antonio has been to the Western Conference Finals eight times now in the past 15 seasons, winning the NBA Finals in four of those attempts and now going for their fifth. The Grizzlies, in existence since 1995, will be playing in the first conference finals in team history. If you can't get excited about these two teams playing each other, there are probably other sports for you to check out.Begin Slideshow<div class="feedflare">
