The expansion is so big it can be seen from Highway 53. After all, it’s 92,000 square feet just north of Virginia. And it’s the home of the former P&H Minepro offices and manufacturing space. Along with the new space, is a new name.

“We’ve consolidated our brand name into Joy Global name. We will still build P&H shovels and other equipment, but under the Joy Global name,” explained Jon Anderson, regional manager for Joy Global Iron Range.

Leaders say it was a customer driven decision. The company is seeing growth. ”We’re bringing in work from eastern Canada, and Appalachia, and expect to continue to grow,” Anderson said.

P&H is already known well in our taconite plants.

Part of the deal for the expansion included 20 new jobs within 5 years. That was the agreement with the city of Virginia, which footed the bill for infrastructure for the site. Joy Global has hired four people this week, and plans to hire 10 more in the next couple of months. Over 60 people work there now. Mayor Steve Peterson said they are ahead of pace to hit that 20 mark.

The new building is expected to be in use this fall.

EWI looks forward to continuing to support valued member Joy Global as they grow bigger and better.

Ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) is a novel new process that produces true metallurgical bonds with full density and works with a variety of metals such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and titanium.

In combining additive and subtractive process capabilities, UAM can create deep slots, hollow, latticed, or honeycombed internal structures, and other complex geometries impossible with conventional subtractive manufacturing processes.

The solid state nature of the UAM bond allows for welding of dissimilar metals. This enables dissimilar metal cladding, production of custom metal matrix composites, and the ability to embed objects or sensors in a metal substrate.

With UAM technology, customers are able to manufacture complex parts that have unique features and attributes not possible using traditional manufacturing techniques.

Parts currently made with traditional operations can be made with much less waste, an increasingly important factor as more expensive, higher performance materials see broader use.

Yesterday (5/16) EWI hosted the Spring – EWI Member Orientation and Update. There were attendees representing 12 companies and 5 states, from Ohio to Oklahoma. The Membership Orientation and Update is a quarterly event that brings EWI members together for technology briefings, a facility tour, and most importantly, a review of how to get the most value from EWI membership. In this session the technical briefings included Welding Design and Distortion and Mechanical Testing. The membership review walked through all the important benefits available to EWI members as part of their membership package. It is important to us that our members know how to use their membership to the greatest extent possible in order to get the most value. In addition, it is always exciting to see our members networking with each other. This in itself is a great benefit for everyone involved.

Some attendee comments included: “Great stuff – facility is amazing”; “Face-to-face contact is always best”; “Seeing the facility and accessibility to various EWI experts is a plus.”

If you are an EWI member and have not been to our facility, or a member who has been here many times, we would love to have you join us for our Summer – Member Orientation and Update on August 14th. This is a free event. To register for Summer Orientation and/or find out more about other EWI events, please check out our web page at: www.ewi.org/events.

If you are NOT an EWI member, we would still love to have you visit and learn more about what’s important to you. For more information, please contact me at 614-688-5049 or lkohr@ewi.org and I would be happy to assist you.

The largest of the German applications centers is Fraunhofer, and Dr. Cialone joked with Mr. Ammon about having “Fraunhofer envy.” EWI, in fact, has many similaries to Fraunhofer. Folks at Brookings are even calling it “the American Fraunhofer.” Both EWI and Fraunhofer are manufacturing applications centers that innovate and mature technologies to the point that they are ready for industry. The primary difference is that Fraunhofer is subsidized by the German government, which allows them to mature more technologies more quickly, and continually expand their capabilities — providing German manufacturers with quicker access to the latest manufacturing technologies available.

Dr. Cialone and Chris Conrardy, VP of Technology & Innovation at EWI, have talked a great deal recently with representatives from U.S. industry and state and federal government about how this “innovation model” proven in Germany could be the key to getting U.S. manufacturing back on track. If the country embraces public/private partnering, this model could provide the innovation infrastructure that the U.S. is currently missing…

Ohio Manufacturing Technologies Company is Stop on “Global Cities Initiative” Tour

May 8, 2012 (Columbus, Ohio) – Tomorrow, EWI’s President and CEO, Dr. Henry Cialone, will participate in a forum alongside the Honorable Peter Ammon, German Ambassador to the United States, comparing and contrasting the U.S. and German manufacturing innovation models. The invitation-only event, entitled Going Global: Boosting Ohio’s Economic Future, marks the Ohio launch of the Global Cities Initiative, a joint project of The Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase, and is being held on the campus of The Ohio State University. 275 senior government, business, civic, and philanthropic leaders from across Ohio, as well as state and federal officials, have been invited.

The discussion of German versus American manufacturing innovation models is both purposeful and timely, given recent focus on manufacturing initiatives by President Obama. Germany’s manufacturing industry, supported by government/commercial partnerships, has continued to prosper and innovate while the United States’ ability to innovate has been stagnant in comparison.

According to Dr. Cialone, “Manufacturing is a dominant driver of a country’s economic prosperity. Germany has a manufacturing innovation model that is proven, and Fraunhofer (Europe’s largest manufacturing application-oriented research organization) is at the center of that model. Interestingly, EWI has strong similarities to Fraunhofer. Ours is an applications center that facilitates public/private partnerships and conducts research to advance manufacturing technologies. The main difference is the lack of base funding in EWI’s model, whereas about one third of Fraunhofer’s revenue is base funding to maintain and advance capability. We believe that with support from state and federal government and industry, our model could be the national innovation model that is lacking in our country. It could help increase manufacturing innovation overall, and lead the way to a healthier manufacturing industry.”

Today, select attendees from the forum will tour EWI headquarters in Columbus to speak with EWI engineers and witness manufacturing innovation taking place in EWI’s laboratories. A video-recording of highlights of the forum with Dr. Cialone and the German Ambassador to the U.S. will be available for viewing on www.brookings.edu and www.ewi.org later this week.

Blake and Sean gave an overview of welding engineering then let the kids try three different activities which included: resistance spot welding, building a circuit to light an LED, and naming as many welded objects as they could identify. They were pleased to hear that the general consensus from the students was that their presentations were by far the best and the kids loved the hands-on activities. The students had very intelligent questions and comments about engineering and our engineers were impressed with their level of understanding and enthusiasm.

EWI was appreciative of the opportunity to present to the students at Woodcrest Elementary and we are certain that there were some future engineers in the bunch.

Over the past couple of years Don has taken four tests and endured many weeks of training, he clearly demonstrated the will to prevail in reaching his goal. He recently completed his last test and is now certified. This level of certification is not easy to achieve, we are excited for him and his outstanding accomplishment. Please join us in congratulating Don.
