The eLearning Guild recently announced an exciting new way to share and learn - The Learning Exchange. The Tipping Point for Interactive Video?

As I write this, YouTube videos are being viewed over four billion times every day. Add to that, numerous other sources of videos, and it is not hard to notice the explosion of videos all around. Whether you want to entertain yourself, or learn something quickly, or check out a product, or watch a piece of news, the preferred medium is videos.

There are two fundamental consequences and in turn, two issues that arise out of this explosion of online video:

New video content is being added to the internet every second. So, how do you find the videos that are most relevant to you?
Our attention spans are getting shorter, and the number of things to be accomplished using videos are increasing. So, how do you skip past what you don’t need, and quickly get to what you must watch?

Better search resolves the first issue. Say, you found the video that contains what you need. The second issue still remains. How do you quickly get to the right part? This is where interactive videos come in. Interactive videos support a much more sophisticated set of options than play, pause, rewind and forward. They are capable of providing skip navigation, informative overlays, and interactions that engage the user.

When Fashion Tutorials Meet Exaltive

Have a look at this video - "25 Ways to Wear a Scarf in 4.5 Minutes!”

Judging from this video’s almost 30 million views, it appears everyone would agree that it is a very effective fashion training video. Going by the popularity and effectiveness of this video, the Exaltive team decided to enhance it using Exaltive. I would be delighted to say that this video served as a great example of how an effective video can be made even better when it is made interactive. The Exaltive interactive version of the video would get you the effective training benefit in about 1.5 minutes, i.e. about 3x faster than the original video. Let’s look at how this happened.

The original video packs lots of details into a very short period. But as a practical matter, it’s unlikely that one will actually learn how to make 25 styles in 4.5 minutes. It’s really more of a reference for the fact that there are so many styles. Most viewers will file this away for future reference for when they need a new scarf style. Of course, then they will have to hunt and peck with the slider to find what they want, and the visuals are so fast they will need to watch it several times to ensure you get it right, All of this is a lot of fiddling with the slider.

An interactive version of the same 4.5 minutes video puts the view in control. The viewer can scan a menu of scarf styles, find the ones of interest and jump right to that section. If you like, you can watch it one or more times, if not, then you can click back to the menu without having to wait for the end, or mess with the slider. All in all, in 1.5 minutes you can quickly get the gist of all the styles, watch several in detail, and explore supplemental online information available online from Wendy Nguyen, the video’s creator.

Perhaps the interactive version’s most effective feature is the ease of return visits. In an age of challenged attention, viewers want to quickly get to the gist, and they need to know that they can return for details when really needed. Navigation challenges make return visits in linear video difficult, but interactive navigation solves this problem very effectively.

Of course fashion training is just one application, but this video clearly serves as an example of how workplace video with clickable features can be made faster and more effective. As you can see, the Exaltive interactions were applied to an existing YouTube video and a menu was created using loop back feature; similarly they can work well with most online videos. Interactive Videos – A Step Ahead

In my last blog, I introduced you to interactive videos, videos that go beyond play, pause, rewind and forward, videos that are capable of fast navigation, informative overlays, and interactions that engage the user; videos that let you search for what you need and help you learn what’s important. That was the starting point for Exaltive.

With its latest release, Exaltive has gone a step ahead and introduced a set of new features which are interactive in every sense and give control to the viewer. A quick summary of these features:

Embed Video – This feature lets you embed a video within another video. The main video can pause to view this, or better yet, add a button so the viewer can decide when to view additional information. What’s the use? Well, you can hold the viewer’s focus and attention. If the viewer hops to different web pages or other videos, there is always a possibility of them digressing from the main video. The real value is the ability to add deeper context and information and let the user decide if they want to see this with a button click. This allows you to put much more detail without the viewer needing to wait for stuff that is not relevant to them. When I tried my hand at this feature, I particularly liked that I could even select and embed just a small relevant part of a YouTube video to give my main video more interest.

Loop back – This feature lets you create a video loop with a counter. There are lots of ways to use this for navigation but my favorite is for menus. I can create a menu of navigation buttons that lets the user decide what is important to watch. A short loop back while the menu displays is much more interesting than a pause. Viewers can click into a specific section and when done, the video will auto loopback to the menu. In many ways this is like creating a video driven web page. With this feature, you can emphasize on the required sections of the video again and again. In learning context, this is a very effective way to re-enforce, right?

Analytics – This feature tracks how often a video is being viewed and also the viewer engagement with the video. It can tell you how many times an interaction on top of a video has been viewed. This feature could be used from the analytics button on top of the video. Here are the sample analytics for the scarf video:And yeah, since the whole world has turned digitally social now, you can share your Exaltive videos on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn too, and people can learn exploring the interactive feats you have added. Web Video 2.0

Has enough time passed for the term “2.0” to gain a sort of hipster nostalgia? I hope so, because before the term was overhyped in the mid 2000s, “2.0” effectively represented the transformation of the Internet from static content to something more dynamic, social and interactive.

My observation is that the Internet is in the beginning stages of the next big “2.0” revolution, and this time it’s in the realm of web video.

Web video 1.0 was dominated by the YouTube revolution that allowed anyone to create and share video. The explosion of new video content was not unlike the dramatic expansion of web pages in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, despite the huge new volume and the easier ways of creating and sharing a video, the 1.0 video remained static, linear and non-interactive. I can change channels faster than I could do before, but the fundamental experience remained the same as my grandfather’s in the 1950s.

Now, all that is about to change with Web Video 2.0. The advancement in HTML5 now allows merging a video and web experience in order to have a video that is personalized, interactive, and even transactive. The content of the video can now be changed based on who is watching, or the viewers input. It can ask questions, collect responses and enable viewers to take action without ever leaving the video screen.

Making Videos Interactive for Flipped Classroom

It’s no surprise that in a flipped classroom scenario the role of videos is pretty significant. A part of this learning scenario expects students to watch video courses at home before they attend class. This technique empowers them to learn at their own pace and instills a sense of responsibility when it comes to learning.

At the same time, this methodology is useful for teachers as it makes it easier for them to interact with students and deepen their understanding of the learning content. No doubt, learning from videos is interesting but videos with their unvarying nature have a tendency to get monotonous, leading to a passive form of learning. We do not want that, do we? Learning through videos should facilitate a two-way communication. Students should be able to interact with what is being taught for greater memory recall and retention.

So how do we achieve this? All you need to do is make your learning videos interactive and dynamic so that they can cater to different student learning styles. Let’s visualize how…

For example, you want your students to pre read a chapter before they come to class. How would you manage to hold their attention if the video was made up of slides of just plain text? It’s not that complicated as you think it is.Just add in a few images to describe the content, insert call-outs and notes to highlight the important points. If that’s not all, you can even put in a few web links so that students can read more information on that particular topic by referring to the respective website.

Like we spoke about empowering students, it’s always better to have the student control the flow of the video instead of the other way around. Enable them to navigate through the video by having features like chapter markers and hotspots. By doing so, students will have the freedom to choose or refer to those topics which they find difficult to comprehend. At the same time, in case they encounter a complex term whose definition they are not aware of, you can help them by having a Glossary interaction right in the video. This Glossary interaction shall have the definitions of the terms mentioned in the video whose description students may seek.

Now that the student has gone through the video, what’s next? Wouldn’t you want to check his/her understanding of the learning content? Short quizzes or assessments can do the trick for you. Video Interactivity at its best with Exaltive - Part 2

Picking up from where I ended my previous blog on the simple interactions that were used in the Medical Benefits Communication interactive video, I am back here to talk about the rich interactions from Exaltive that were infused in this video.

So, here are the interactions that we have been waiting to throw light on -

To share the definitions of the key terms that were mentioned in the video a Glossary interaction was inserted in it. One can open up the Glossary by clicking on the button displayed on the top right within the video.

In order to give the viewer a synopsis or a quick view of the points that were covered in the video, a Panning Cards interaction served the purpose. On selecting a desired card, the viewer is presented with more information pertaining to that card (displayed in a pop up card on the right, seen in the image below)

An engaging Question & Answer interaction was introduced to pop-up at a certain pre-defined time during the video to check the understanding of the viewer. Once the answers were submitted, a result screen is displayed with the correct responses.

In order to summarize the key topics mentioned in the video, a Card Shuffle interaction was also added, as seen in the image below.

Looks interesting, doesn’t it? I am sure all of these rich video interactivities must have given you a fair idea of what a truly interactive and engaging video experience is all about.

Video Interactivity at its best with Exaltive - Part 1

In our previous blogs, we spoke about the importance of interactive videos and the role played by Exaltive in creating them. Now it’s time to show you an interesting video sample showcasing various interaction features of Exaltive.

The sample I have selected today is a Medical Benefits Communication video, which throws light on the important aspects of a PPO medical plan. Here are some interesting features used in this video:

Exaltive logo was added to the base video as an image overlay

A dynamic jumping feature within the video was created using hotspots. In one of the video scenes, top ten benefits were shown using 10 circles (as shown below). We added a hotspot to each circle. Viewers can now directly jump to a particular section by clicking on any of the circles.

Another way for a viewer to jump to a certain section in the video was by using chapter markers (yellow lines shown on the timeline in the image below).

It also has an interesting feature of a web object annotation which allows the viewer to open a webpage or an internet site right within the video. This helps the viewer get quick access to additional relevant information in the window itself thus making it a truly interactive experience.

Raising the Bar - Again!

In the era of the digital revolution, is Content still King?

The revolution started when the new century dawned. Innovative companies with marketing skills as strong as their technical prowess came up with software systems that could assign training events, record completions and eliminate (or at least drastically reduce) synchronous classroom scheduling.

And at the same time these Learning Management Systems (LMS’s) could reduce training budgets by 50-70%. C-suite management was hooked. Wall Street had a field day with one IPO after another.

Did investment in Content that could take advantage of the new technology keep pace? Not even close. In fact, it decreased dramatically. In the early years of the revolution, most of what was offered was at its best called page turners - written material or simple line drawings and charts converted to digital and displayed on computer screens. This content might have been labelled as “e-learning,” but technological limitations restricted what got delivered to the screen…Remember the buffering problems when you tried to download audio and/or video?

To rectify this, the evolution of next generation technologies saw the explosion and ubiquity of broadband. This opened the world for delivery of streamed video.

Was e-learning affected? Certainly, but the first phase of this part of the journey was basically a port-over and sale of the huge amount of linear videos in training publisher’s catalogs with some minor improvements like chapterizing and tests (with results being recorded on client or SaaS LMS’s). This was then delivered to the end users via the internet or enterprise intranets. Once again – these modest enhancements were labeled video-based learning.

Now it’s time to raise the bar again - to create compelling, engaging, interactive e-learning that takes full advantage of the learning power of video.
