Plot

The manga features a series of short stories about eight girls in middle school and high school, plus their classmates and relatives. Each chapter focuses on a different main character. These stories are intertwined and eventually lead to a main story involving most of the cast.

Characters

Middle school students

Ayumi Arihara (有原あゆみ, Arihara Ayumi^?): Voiced by: Mariya Ise; A 2nd year middle school second year and the focus of Chapter 1, Ayumi is one day asked out by Misao Zaitzu. Though she claimed she would accept any offer, she is consistently unsettled by Zaitsu's monstrous appearance. However, she shows she can be somewhat caring as well as crafty. She is 152cm (4'11") tall and runs the second fastest in her class. She's also unusually strong for her size and build, as demonstrated when she knocked out Misao with a single kick. She falls in love with Misao's younger brother Mamoru after he carries her to the infirmary in the manner that she had been dreaming--being carried like a princess by a prince. At the end, she is trying to decide between the two Zaitsu brothers, whether to choose the one who likes her (Misao) or the one she likes (Mamoru). She shares a strong resemblance to Chinami Hashimoto, a character from another of Kawashita's work, Ichigo 100%.
Kei Enomoto (江ノ本慧, Enomoto Kei^?): Voiced by: Shizuka Itou; One of Ayumi's friends, Kei is apparently very popular with guys due to her "mature" face. However, she sees the attention she receives as a hassle, and believes confessions of love are just a chore if the feeling isn't mutual. She openly admits that looks are a major factor in choosing a relationship, but carries a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with Kusuda. But when he confessed his feelings to her, she returned them. She is in the same grade as Ayumi.
Koyoi Bessho (別所小宵, Bessho Koyoi^?): Another one of Ayumi's friends, Koyoi has an open brother complex with her brother Yoshihiko. For a while when Misao started hanging around, she, along with Nao Chikura, stopped walking home with Ayumi, who is also her classmate. Since her brother likes Misaki, a popular and attractive girl, she regards her as a "Final Boss" that she must defeat. She also quotes that Misaki's chest is a "truly evil power."

Rika Dobashi (土橋りか, Dobashi Rika^?): Seemingly the most level headed out of the group, Rika (or Doba-chan to her closest friends) seems to enjoy teasing others. A well known tom-boy, she excels in athletics and has been stated to be domineering. She is in the same grade as Ayumi. She became close to tennis player Haruto Terai when he started physical training with her, and over time became attracted to him, but didn't give him that impression at first, thinking that was all there was to have a relationship. However, after Kei explained to her about what boys think and feel, Rika became more overt about her feelings, and surprised Haruto with a kiss, and furthermore, after the runaway incident by some of the boys, she admits that if Haruto also ran away, she "absolutely won't like it".

Nao Chikura (千倉名央, Chikura Nao^?): Another one of Ayumi's friends and classmates, Nao is somewhat envious of Kei's attention. Along with Koyoi, she, for a while, stops walking home with Ayumi for fear of Misao. Being a member of the art club, she came to admire the artist who made the painting of a Sakura tree, Renjou Yukito, and after meeting him, asked him to assist her in making her own painting. However, upon his graduation, he left Japan, leaving her broken hearted. When she learned about Hiroyuki Sogabe's feelings towards her, she became close to him. She shares a strong resemblance to Misuzu Sotomura, a character from another of Kawashita's work, Ichigo 100%.

Mamoru Zaitsu (財津衛, Zaitsu Mamoru^?): A cheerful boy who dreams of being a paramedic, Ayumi falls for Mamoru quickly when he offers to take her to the nurse. Although he is in Ayumi's class, Ayumi only realizes that he is in fact Misao's younger brother a day after she meets Misao. He is somewhat taken back by Ayumi; he believes she is more fearsome than she may appear. Furthermore, despite Ayumi's feelings, Mamoru has a crush on his next door neighbor Misaki Yamamoto. He later runs away with Kusuda and Sogabe after he was turned down by Misaki. He then has a change of heart after realizing he made Ayumi cry due to his actions. He shares a passing resemblance to Kojima, a character from another of Kawashita's work, Lilim Kiss, as well as Manaka Junpei from Ichigo 100%.

Kusuda (楠田, Kusuda^?): He is a pervy friend of Mamoru's. His talent is putting girls to sleep with stupid puns. He doesn't see much in Ayumi (though she wanted to see her in a cheerleader outfit), but he is very interested in Misaki; he is nearly obsessed with her. He seems undaunted by Kei's good looks, and with his "Kappa" face, they tend to bicker a lot. He runs away from home with Mamoru and Sogabe, because he regrets saying he hates Kei. In the end, he confesses to Kei and finds his feelings reciprocated.

Haruto Terai (寺井, Terai^?): A member of the tennis club at school, Terai has little athletic ability. However, with Dobashi's assistance, he manages to become a somewhat decent athlete. During that time, he has fallen for Dobashi, but due to her (inadvertent) teasing, plus the fact that she avoided holding hands with him (to which she revealed that she found it embarrassing to do so), he is unsure of their relationship. Eventually, he gets a kiss from Dobashi, which affirms their relationship.

Hiroyuki Sogabe (曽我部弘之, Sogabe Hiroyuki^?): He is a friend of Kusuda. Sogabe is a bit of a delusional character, as well as a little narcissistic. He likes Nao and tries to get close to her to create an opportunity for her to confess to him. He shows his insecurities when Nao shows interest towards Yukito Renjou, an artist and graduated student from their school. He runs away from home because of this (although only for two days) with Kusuda and Mamoru. After he loudly admits his feelings towards Nao such that she hears it (after she and the other girls pursue the runaways), the two become close. Near the end of the series, he cuts his hair.

Soako Andou (安藤そあこ, Andou Soako^?): A second year middle school student, Soako is the heroine of the Omake of the first printed volume of Hatsukoi Limited. The first introduction of Soako is when she is late for school. Unfortunately for Soako, in her lateness, she has forgotten to put on underwear. The story follows her throughout the day, and all the problems that she has.

Sumire Fudounomiya (Fudounomiya Sumire^?): A middle school student who is the head of the Theatre Club. She is determined on producing the best stage-performance since her taking the position. She has hers sights set on making Kusuda join the production due to his kappa-like looks and will resort to any means necessary (albeit very dirty) to achieve it.

Story

For as long as he can remember, Takashi has been cursed by the ability to see spirits, a power inherited from his grandmother Reiko. Upon her death, Reiko bequeaths to her grandson several of her belongings - including the Book of Friends, a book containing the names of spirits Reiko had bullied into servitude. The Book of Friends is a highly prized item in the spirit world, and spirits hound Takashi constantly. Whereas Reiko formed the contracts, however, Takashi spends his time dissolving the contracts and releasing the various spirits that come to him for help. But that doesn't mean there aren't malicious spirits trying to kill him. Which is where Madara (called Nyanko-sensei by Natsume) comes in; Madara serves as Natsume's bodyguard and spiritual advisor of sorts, even though he is motivated by his own desire to possess the Book of Friends. He later on begins to become more attatched to Takashi

Natsume Takashi

The main character of the story. Like his grandmother, Natsume Reiko, Natsume has the ability to see spirits. He has inherited the Book of Friends, a book of names that no one but Reiko, Natsume, and other spirits can read. Because of Natsume's strong resemblance to Reiko, he is often mistaken for her, causing spirits who hate Reiko to chase him constantly. He decided to dissolve the Book by giving all the names back to their owners. He is accompanied by the spirit Madara, who he calls "Nyanko-sensei" or sometimes simply "sensei," promising that he can keep the Book of Friends once Natsume dies.

Natsume is an orphan. When he was younger, his parents died, and he was constantly sent to live with relatives. Because of his ability to see spirits, Natsume would scare his relatives because they didn't understand what he was doing. Eventually, Natsume lived with the Fujiwaras, an old couple from his father's side. He loves them, and does not want to cause them trouble, so he keeps quiet about his problem. Though he is rather slender, Natsume is incredibly strong when it comes to Youkai, having enough strength to knock spirits (mainly Nyanko-sensei) out with one blow (backed up with his spiritual powers). He also has a bit of a short temper, since he argues with Cat most of the time. In the anime, he is more cheery and good-natured, while in the manga, he is slightly more dismal and short-tempered.

Natsume is able to return the names inscribed in the Book of Friends by first picturing the spirit in his mind in order to learn the spirit's name. The book flips to the page on which the name is written and Natsume takes the page and places it in his mouth while breathing out. The spell which originally enslaved the spirits used Reiko's saliva and breath, though as Reiko's grandson and one who bears a strong resemblance to Reiko, Natsume is able to use the spell as well. The cost of releasing the name, however, is that Natsume's energy is completely drained in the process.

Natsume also has the ability to channel the dreams and memories of spirits, whether he wants to or not. If a spirit gets too emotional, and sleeps in the same room as Natsume, Natsume can see the dreams the spirit is having. On the other hand, most of the spirits let Natsume see their memories, so that he can understand them better. Natsume can also see their memories when he releases a spirit's name. When Natsume is completely frustrated over a problem and falls asleep in class, he actually sleep-draws in his notebook about whatever is bothering him at the time. When he was being chased by a shadow he called "Mary," he started drawing it in his sleep, making his friends wonder if he was in love with a foreigner. His incredibly strong ability in spiritual magic and strength causes him to smell "yummy" to man-eating spirits, as Madara puts it.

As I said with Omasu's "The Choshu Chronicles," I am a SUCKER for political intrigue, especially during the Bakumatsu. This story is THE story to read if you're into that as well. The research into the political background of the Meiji Restoration is so well-woven into the story that it's hard to believe it's simply fanfiction. If it didn't have Rurouni Kenshin elements, I'd venture to say that this could be a very exciting novel that takes place during the time period. Though the updates are incredibly slow (slow enough to make everyone wonder if the story will be continued), they're well worth the wait. Each chapter has loads of historical and political information packed into it, and it's quite apparent that Naga has put great effort into making the details as accurate and realistic as possible. This is not a straightforward and easy read, however, so if you have a short attention span and don't like having to think while you're reading, this story is probably not the best choice for you. I understand not everyone is into politically-based fiction, but for those of you who are... I don't know what you're waiting for. ;) Highly recommended.[ This story is available online at fanfiction(dot)net ]

The events of novel 9 are contained within a drama CD as well. nekokoban was nice enough to upload it for me. I'm going to be summarizing the drama CD instead of the novel proper because, honestly, they're more or less the same thing and it's easier for me to understand spoken Japanese than written.So, anyway! If you read this, you'll be fully caught up on where Masahiro and Mokkun are coming from and we won't be able to spoil you at all. \o/Which is to say that, as you've probably noticed, we haven't taken Mokkun and Masahiro from the end of the anime. Shounen Onmyouji is an ongoing series of novels (it's up to 18 volumes at this point) and the end of the Kazane arc is only novel 7. Novel 8 is sidestories, and novel 9 continues the main plot with the beginning of the Tenko arc. Masahiro and Mokkun in camp are from the end of novel 9/the beginning of novel 10.

Chapter 4 : Something appears to be wrong with the mother and the child brought back from the shrine... the mother doesn't remeber a thing about her family and the little girl just stares into space...Then, a demon attack Masahiro. Will Masahiro, who is currently unable to see any spirits and demons fend it off?

Chapter 5 :Seimei taught Akiko a spell such that she can see Masahiro in her dream. In her dream, she talked to Masahiro, but didn't see Mokkun anywhere around. Surely that must be just a dream?

Chapter 6 :Meanwhile, in the village, demons dwelling in the lake are attacking the villagers. Masahiro's brother had finally reached Izumo. In his brother's presence, Masahiro finally broke down in tears. Will his brother be able to comfort and calm him down?

Chapter 7 :Masahiro saved a pair of brothers from the demon lurking in the lake. Sometime later, Touda wonders why he could never remember Masahiro's name. Masahiro, the name always seems to be forgoteeon as soon as he hear it. Why?

Chapter 8 :In his battle with the demons of the lake, Masahiro fainted. At the same time, the demon detected something about Masahiro and thinks of Masahiro as an unexpected find. What does it want with Masahiro?

Chapter 9 :When he fought the demons again, Masahiro seem to regain his ability to "see" again. Why is that so? Is that flame that Masahiro felt within himself even more dangerous that the demons themselves?

Chapter 10 :Touda fell into the demon's trap. The demon tried to manipulate Touda but just at that critical moment ...

Chapter 11 : All's well again, and the chapter ends with Kochin recalling the past when Touda took care of Masahiro.
