Twenty-four healthy male obese subjects were randomly divided in either a low- [40% maximal oxygen consumption ( O2 max)] or high-intensity exercise training program (70% O2 max) for 12 wk, or a nonexercising control group. Before and after the intervention, measurements of fat metabolism at rest and during exercise were performed by using indirect calorimetry, [U-13C]palmitate, and [1,2-13C]acetate. Furthermore, body composition and maximal aerobic capacity were measured. Total fat oxidation did not change at rest in any group. During exercise, after low-intensity exercise training, fat oxidation was increased by 40% (P &lt; 0.05) because of an increased non-plasma fatty acid oxidation (P &lt; 0.05). High-intensity exercise training did not affect total fat oxidation during exercise. Changes in fat oxidation were not significantly different among groups. It was concluded that low-intensity exercise training in obese subjects seemed to increase fat oxidation during exercise but not at rest. Lula salientou que de 2008 até 2010 deverá ser investido no setor cerca de R$ 41 bilhões em pesquisa e capacitação científica. Para ele, o investimento em tecnologia dará retorno ao Brasil. A meta, segundo presidente, é aumentar o dinheiro aplicado no setor de 1,02% para 1,5% do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB), a soma de todas as riquezas produzidas no país.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lula disse ainda que haverá um reajuste de 20% nas bolsas de mestrado e doutorado a partir de março de 2008: as de mestrado passarão de R$ 940 para R$ 1.200 e as de doutorado, de R$ 1.340 para R$ 1.800.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ele entende que os investimentos no setor podem "fazer com que o Brasil se torne mais senhor da situação em ciência, tecnologia e inovação". Também salientou que as descobertas científicas podem tornar os produtos brasileiros mais competitivos no mercado internacional. — O Brasil não pode ser um país que tenha uma base forte nas suas exportações de produtos in natura, de grãos, de minério de ferro. DATA SOURCES: All human research reported in English, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals within the past 25 y was reviewed. STUDY SELECTION: Acceptance criteria (n = 493 from &gt; 700 studies) were that a therapeutic ntervention of diet, exercise or diet plus exercise was employed, specifically for weight reduction in obese adult humans and that weight change was reported numerically. Only aerobic exercise studies were included, while drug, hormone and surgical treatments were excluded. DATA EXTRACTION: All data were extracted by the same investigator from the original research report. Except for gender and program type, all extracted data were numerical. DATA SYNTHESIS: ANOVA, with a Newman-Keuls post hoc test, was used to determine differences among programs (P &lt; 0.05). One analysis was&lt;br /&gt;performed on the group mean data and one based on effect sizes. Analyses were repeated using initial body weight, initial percent body fat and program length, as covariates. RESULTS: Primarily, subjects aged 40 y have been studied (39.5 +/- 0.4 y, mean +/- s.e.m.) who are only moderately obese (92.7 +/- 0.9 kg, 33.2 +/- 0.5 body mass index (BMI), 33.4 +/- 0.7% body fat); for short durations (15.6 +/- 0.6 weeks). Exercise studies were of a shorter duration, used younger subjects who weighed less, had lower BMI and percentage body fat values, than diet or diet plus exercise studies. Despite these differences, weight lost through diet, exercise and diet plus exercise was 10.7 +/- 0.5, 2.9 +/- 0.4* and 11.0 +/- 0.6 kg, respectively. However, at one-year follow-up, diet plus exercise tended to be the superior program. Effect size and covariate analyses revealed similar program differences. CONCLUSION: Weight loss research over the past 25 y has been very narrowly focused on a middle age population that is only moderately obese, while the interventions lasted for only short periods of time. METHOD: Systematic review. DATA SOURCES: Randomised or quasi-randomised studies identified by searching Medline, Embase, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and PEDro, and by recursive checking of bibliographies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Muscle soreness, incidence of injury, athletic performance. RESULTS: Five studies, all of moderate quality, reported sufficient data on the effects of stretching on muscle soreness to be included in the analysis. &lt;/span&gt;Outcomes seemed homogeneous. &lt;span style="" lang="EN-US"&gt;Stretching produced &lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;small and statistically non-significant reductions in muscle soreness. The pooled estimate of reduction in muscle soreness 24 hours after exercising was only 0.9 mm on a 100 mm scale (95% confidence interval -2.6 mm to 4.4 mm). Data from two studies on army recruits in military training show that muscle stretching before &lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;exercising does not produce useful reductions in injury risk (pooled hazard ratio 0.95, 0.78 to 1.16). CONCLUSIONS: Stretching before or after exercising does not &lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;confer protection from muscle soreness. Stretching before exercising does not seem to confer a practically useful reduction in the risk of injury, but the generality of this finding needs testing. Although much research has been performed examining strength increases with training, taken individually, they provide little insight into the magnitude of strength gains along the continuum of training intensities, frequencies, and volumes. A meta-analysis of 140 studies with a total of 1433 effect sizes (ES) was carried out to identify the dose-response relationship. METHODS: Studies employing a strength-training intervention and containing data necessary to calculate ES were included in the analysis. RESULTS: ES demonstrated different responses based on the training status of the participants. Training with a mean intensity of 60% of one repetition maximum elicits maximal gains in untrained individuals, whereas 80% is most effective in those who are trained. Untrained participants experience maximal gains by training each muscle group 3 d.wk and trained individuals 2 d.wk. Four sets per muscle group elicited maximal gains in both trained and untrained individuals. The mean estimated total energy cost of the ET program was 120.4 MJ, whereas the corresponding value for the HIIT program was 57.9 MJ. Despite its lower energy cost, the HIIT program induced a more pronounced reduction in subcutaneous adiposity compared with the ET program. When corrected for the energy cost of training, the decrease in the sum of six subcutaneous skinfolds induced by the HIIT program was ninefold greater than by the ET program. Muscle biopsies obtained in the vastus lateralis before and after training showed that both training programs increased similarly the level of the citric acid cycle enzymatic marker. On the other hand, the activity of muscle glycolytic enzymes was increased by the HIIT program, whereas a decrease was observed following the ET program. The enhancing effect of training on muscle 3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (HADH) enzyme activity, a marker of the activity of beta-oxidation, was significantly greater after the HIIT program. In conclusion, these results reinforce the notion that for a given level of energy expenditure, vigorous exercise favors negative energy and lipid balance to a greater extent than exercise of low to moderate intensity.
