- SoftHardware's Toolbox è una raccolta di strumenti utili per il troubleshooting di una qualsiasi postazione Windows. Questa compilation è stata concepita come una vera e propria "cassetta degli attrezzi" da portare su una normale pendrive, e conseguentemente tutte le applicazioni incluse sono rigorosamente portable (non hanno bisogno di installazione, bensì funzionano direttamente dal supporto su cui sono state installate).

- Here's a list of TweakPrefetch functions:

CLEAR PREFETCH: this function, available in the Advanced Controls, will empty the Prefetch folder, forcing the operating system to rebuild fetch data (or not to create them at all if Prefetch has been disabled). Note: emptying the Windows/Prefetch folder is not recommended and will cause a temporary performance drop in applications startup time. I added this function to allow advanced users to reset Prefetch data in case it might be necessary. It is possible to allow the program to create a backup of the current Prefetch data in order to be able to restore it at any time with the "Restore old Prefetch data" function (obviously restoring obsolete Prefetch data is counterproductive).

DISABLE SUPEFETCH SERVICE: since version 5.0, if you decide to disable Superfetch (Vista/7), it's possible to choose whether or not to disable the Superfetch service as well. This is not recommended, since the service also manages the creation of .pf files necessary for the Prefetching function. In case you wish to disable it (to save resources or anything else), you'll have to use the "Rebuild Layout.ini" function once every Windows session you start new applications in, in order to let the system build all of the Prefetch files. This operation is facilitated by command line parameters and the "Create shortcut" function.

LAYOUT.INI AND PREFETCH: if you notice that Windows won't rebuild the "Layout.ini" file after you have cleaned the Prefetch folder, or maybe you just want to update it to your latest startup configuration, you can force the process using the "Rebuild Layout.ini" function (available in the Advanced Controls as well) in the "Options" menu. The program will automatically create a backup of the previous file, in order to let the user restore it (with the "Restore old Layout.ini" function) in case it might be necessary. Note: the program will only save a copy of the last Layout.ini (for the nature of the file, restoring a too old Layout.ini is counterproductive).

CONFIGURATION WIZARD: this function will help less experienced users to find the optimal Prefetch and Superfetch settings for their system and needs. It's very user-friendly, so just try it!

COMMAND LINE SUPPORT: implemented since version 4.0, it's very important for anyone wanting to disable Superfetch and keep Prefetching functionality.

Available parameters: /RL (rebuilds Layout.ini and prefetch files in silent mode); /RLR (same as /RL, restarts the system on completion); /RLS (same as /RL, shuts the system down on completion); /resL (restores the old Layout.ini in silent mode); /resP (restores the old Prefetch data in silent mode); /help (shows a list of the available commands).

CREATE SHORTCUT: this function is able to create special shortcuts which will "Rebuild the Layout.ini" in silent mode. Users will be able to let TweakPrefetch shutdown or restart the system when the operation is completed.

SETTINGS AND BACKUP FILES DELETION: it's possible to delete settings and backup files with the "Delete settings" and "Delete backup files" functions. It's recommended to delete the program settings every time you install a newer version of the program.

- Ecco una lista delle funzionalità di TweakPrefetch:

CLEAR PREFETCH: questa funzione, disponibile tra i Controlli Avanzati, svuoterà la cartella di Prefetch costringendo il sistema operativo a ricostruire i dati di fetch (o a non crearli più se si è scelto di disabilitare il Prefetching). Nota: svuotare la cartella Windows/Prefetch è altamente sconsigliato e provocherà un calo temporaneo nei tempi di apertura delle applicazioni. Ho integrato questa funzione per permettere agli utenti più esperti di resettare i dati di Prefetch, in caso possa risultare necessario. E' possibile permettere al programma di creare un backup dei dati di Prefetch di Windows in modo da poterli ripristinare in qualsiasi momento tramite la funzione "Restore old Prefetch data" (ovviamente, ripristinare dati di Prefetch obsoleti è controproducente).

DISABLE SUPERFETCH SERVICE: a partire dalla versione 5.0, se si decide di impostare il Superfetch su "Disabilitato" (solo Vista/7), è possibile decidere se disabilitare anche il servizio Superfetch. Ciò è sconsigliato, in quanto tale servizio gestisce anche la creazione dei files .pf necessari necessari per la funzione di Prefetching. In caso lo si voglia disabilitare (per risparmiare risorse o altro), sarà necessario utilizzare la funzione "Rebuild Layout.ini" almeno una volta per ogni sessione in cui avviamo nuove applicazioni per permettere al sistema di costruire i file necessari al Prefetch. Questa operazione è comunque molto agevolata dalla presenza dei parametri per riga di comando e dalla funzione "Create Shortcut".

LAYOUT.INI E PREFETCH: nel caso in cui, una volta svuotata la cartella di Prefetch, si dovesse notare che il file "Layout.ini" (fondamentale per la funzione di fetch) tarda a ricrearsi, o semplicemente si desidera aggiornare tale file (in seguito alla rimozione/aggiunzione di programmi di startup, ad esempio) è possibile forzare l'operazione tramite la funzione "Rebuild Layout.ini" (disponibile anch'essa tra i Controlli Avanzati) selezionabile dal menù "Opzioni". Il programma creerà automaticamente un backup del file, in modo da rendere possibile il ripristino dello stesso (mediante la funzione "Restore old Layout.ini") in caso possa risultare necessario. N.B: viene salvata solo una copia dell'ultimo Layout.ini (per la natura del file, ripristinare un Layout.ini troppo vecchio risulta controproducente).

CONFIGURATION WIZARD: questa funzione aiuterà gli utenti meno esperti ad impostare Prefetch e Superfetch in maniera ottimale in base al proprio sistema ed alle proprie esigenze. E' davvero semplice da utilizzare, quindi non mi dilungherò nel descriverlo. Provatelo!

SUPPORTO PER RIGA DI COMANDO: implementato a partire dalla versione 4.0, è di fondamentale importanza per chi volesse disabilitare il servizio Superfetch e mantenere la funzionalità di Prefetch, come spiegato in precedenza.

I parametri disponibili sono: /RL (ricostruisce Layout.ini e file di Prefetch in modalità silenziosa); /RLR (stesso di /RL, riavvia il sistema al termine); /RLS (stesso di /RL, arresta il sistema al termine); /resL (ripristina il vecchio Layout.ini in modalità silenziosa); /resP (ripristina i vecchi dati di Prefetch in modalità silenziosa); /help (visualizza i parametri disponibili).

CREATE SHORTCUT: questa funzione è in grado di creare speciali collegamenti che avvieranno la funzione "Rebuild Layout.ini" in modalità silenziosa. L'utente potrà anche decidere di spegnere o riavviare la macchina al termine dell'operazione.

ELIMINAZIONE IMPOSTAZIONI E FILES DI BACKUP: è possibile eliminare le impostazioni ed i files di backup del programma tramite le funzioni "Delete settings" e "Delete backup files". E' consigliato eliminare le impostazioni ogni volta che si installa una nuova versione del programma.

TweakPrefetch Functions and Changelog

- Windows XP contains an interesting function, called Prefetch, capable of reducing applications startup time as well as the operating system boot time.

Prefetching works this way: the first time the user runs a given X application, Windows controls its startup and creates a X.pf file inside the Windows/Prefetch folder. This file contains a sort of index of the X application files to load into memory, as well as information about the order in which they should be loaded. That way, the next time the X application is started, Windows will check the previously created "index" and will use its information to grant a faster startup time.

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the Prefetch function has been partnered with Superfetch: Vista uses a complex algorhytm to determine which applications are used and their access frequency, in order to preload parts of them into memory at Windows startup or at a later moment (determined by the algorhytm I was talking about). Since they are already partially loaded in memory, applications will startup faster than they did thanks to the traditional Prefetch.

Prefetch and Superfetch are theorically good functions. But pratically, things are a bit different. Prefetch does its work well, without any particular cons. Superfetch, instead, could lead to abnormal hard disk activity (caused by memory IO operations) and random in-game framerate drops (probably caused by the caching process). Moreover, Superfetch will use a considerable amount of system memory (even if it's managed with an accurate priority system), so tweaking this function might increase the overall performance of systems with less than 2 GiB of RAM. Fortunately Superfetch has been tamed down in Windows 7, but these problems are still present even on the new Microsoft platform. Furthermore, fetching is totally useless for solid state drive users, who may want to disable this function to extend the lifespan of the unit. For these and/or other reasons, advanced users might want to tweak the way Windows manages Prefetch and Superfetch, and TweakPrefetch is a very easy way to accomplish this.

TweakPrefetch is a utility coded in VB.net capable of managing fetching in Windows XP, Vista and 7. It allows the user to set separate parameters for Prefetch and Superfetch. The available options are:

Disabled: completely disables fetching.
Applications Only: fetching will only be applied to user started applications.
Boot Only: fetching will only be applied to boot files (system files, services and startup programs).
Applications & Boot: fetching will be applied to both applications and boot files (Windows default setting for Prefetch and Superfetch).

TweakPrefetch will also detect wrong parameters for Prefetch and Superfetch, and will let the user fix them with a single click.

Since version 3.0, I implemented a fetching configuration Wizard, which will help less experienced users to find the optimal Prefetch and Superfetch settings for their system and needs.

Prefetching in Windows XP is better left at its default value for the 99% of the users. However, someone prefers to set it to "Boot Only", in order to benefit from fetching only at boot time.

For what concerns Windows Vista and Windows 7, default settings are still recommended for most users (especially for who doesn't use the PC for gaming). Advanced users and gamers might want to disable Superfetch (to obtain an XP-like fetching, reduce hard disk trashing and prevent this function to interfere with games) or set it to "Boot Only" at least. Obviously, it's up to the users to experiment different settings and tweak fetching at their advantage.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: - thanks to Pedro Leite Ribeiro - if you decide to disable the Superfetch service under Vista or 7, the system will stop creating the ".pf" files necessary for the Prefetching function (note that you can disable Superfetch but keep the Superfetch service enabled in order to avoid this problem). In this case, you'll have to use the "Rebuild Layout.ini" function once every Windows session you start new applications in, in order to let the system build all of the Prefetch files. Take a look at TweakPrefetch functions list for further info on how to automate the operation.

INSTALLATION/UNINSTALLATION NOTES
--------------------------
To install TweakPrefetch you just have to run the self extracting archive and extract the contents to any folder you like. TweakPrefetch needs the .NET Framework 3.5 (or newer) to run properly.

To uninstall TweakPrefetch, just use the "Delete Settings" function and delete the TweakPrefetch folder.

- Windows XP possiede un'interessante funzione, detta Prefetch, in grado di ridurre il tempo necessario all'apertura delle applicazioni, nonchè quello necessario all'avvio del sistema operativo.

Il Prefetch opera in questo modo: la prima volta che si avvia una determinata applicazione X, Windows ne controlla l'avvio e crea un file X.pf nella cartella Windows/Prefetch. Tale file contiene una sorta di indice delle sezioni dell'applicazione X da caricare in memoria, oltre alle indicazioni sull'ordine con cui caricarle. In tal modo, la volta successiva che l'utente avvierà l'applicazione X, il sistema operativo controllerà questo "indice" precedentemente creato e ne utilizzerà le informazioni per garantire un avvio più rapido della suddetta applicazione.

In Windows Vista e Windows 7, alla funzione di Prefetch è stata affiancata quella di Superfetch: il sistema operativo registra mediante un complesso algoritmo quali applicazioni vengono avviate dall'utente e con quale frequenza, in modo da precaricare parti delle stesse in memoria all'avvio di Windows, o in un secondo momento determinato dall'algoritmo di cui parlavo in precedenza. Essendo parzialmente caricate in memoria, le applicazioni si avvieranno in tempi inferiori rispetto a quanto accadeva con il tradizionale Prefetch.

Prefetch e Superfetch sono entrambe ottime funzioni in linea teorica. Nella pratica però, le cose sono leggermente diverse. Il Prefetch assolve appieno il suo compito senza particolari controindicazioni. Per il Superfetch, le cose si complicano. Diversi utenti (tra cui il sottoscritto) hanno rilevato attività anomale dell'hard disk (causate dal caricamento in memoria delle applicazioni all'avvio o in momenti successivi) oltre a cali di framerate casuali in-game (probabilmente imputabili alle stesse operazioni di caching di cui parlavo). Inoltre, i vantaggi del Superfetch si pagano a suon di RAM (anche se la stessa viene gestita con un accurato sistema di priorità), per cui l'ottimizzazione (o disabilitazione) di tale funzione potrebbe migliorare le prestazioni complessive dei sistemi con quantità di RAM inferiore ai 2 GiB. Fortunatamente con Windows 7 la situazione è nettamente migliorata, grazie ad una gestione meno invasiva del Superfetch. Ma purtroppo, i problemi sopracitati persistono anche sulla nuova piattaforma Microsoft. Inoltre, il fetching risulta pressochè inutile per i possessori di dischi a stato solido, i quali dovrebbero disabilitarlo per allungare la vita del drive. Per queste o altre ragioni, gli utenti più esperti potrebbero voler controllare il modo in cui Windows gestisce Prefetch e Superfetch, e TweakPrefetch rappresenta un modo semplicissimo per farlo.

TweakPrefetch è un'utility codificata in VB.net in grado di gestire il fetching nei sistemi operativi Windows XP, Vista e 7. Essa permette di impostare separatamente i parametri di Prefetch e Superfetch. Le opzioni disponibili sono:

Disabled: disabilita del tutto la funzione di fetching.
Applications Only: fetch attivo solo sulle applicazioni avviate dall'utente.
Boot Only: fetch attivo solo sui file di avvio (file di sistema, servizi e programmi startup).
Applications & Boot: fetch attivo su applicazioni e file di boot (impostazione predefinita di Windows per Prefetch e Superfetch).

TweakPrefetch rileverà inoltre la presenza di parametri errati per le funzioni di Prefetch e Superfetch, permettendo all'utente di correggerli in breve tempo.

La configurazione ottimale del Prefetch in Windows XP è, per il 99% degli utenti, quella di default. Tuttavia, qualcuno preferisce impostare il fetch su "Solo Boot", in modo da beneficiare dei vantaggi del fetching solo all'avvio.

Per quanto riguarda Windows Vista e Windows 7, si consiglia comunque di mantenere le impostazioni di default, che saranno più che buone per la maggioranza degli utenti (specialmente per chi non utilizza il PC come piattaforma videoludica). Gli utenti avanzati ed i videogiocatori potrebbero però voler disabilitare il Superfetch (per ottenere un fetching del tutto simile a quello presente su XP, ridurre le attività anomale dell'hard disk e non permettere che la funzione interferisca con i videogames) o per lo meno impostarlo su "Solo Boot". Ovviamente, sta all'utente sperimentare le varie impostazioni e settare il fetching a proprio vantaggio.

NOTA IMPORTANTE: - grazie a Pedro Leite Ribeiro - in Windows Vista e 7 se si decide di disabilitare il servizio Superfetch, il sistema smetterà di creare i file ".pf" necessari per la funzione di Prefetching. In questo caso, sarà necessario utilizzare la funzione "Rebuild Layout.ini" almeno una volta per ogni sessione in cui avviamo nuove applicazioni per permettere al sistema di costruire i file necessari al Prefetch (notare che si può disabilitare il Superfetch mantenendo il servizio attivo, in modo da evitare questo inconveniente). Leggere la lista delle funzioni di TweakPrefetch per scoprire come automatizzare l'operazione.

NOTE DI INSTALLAZIONE/DISINSTALLAZIONE
-----------------------------
Per installare TweakPrefetch è sufficiente scompattare l'archivio autoestraente in una cartella a vostra scelta. TweakPrefetch necessita del .NET Framework 3.5 (o superiore) per funzionare correttamente.

Per disinstallare TweakPrefetch è sufficiente utilizzare la funzione "Delete Settings" e cancellare la cartella in cui l'avete estratto.

Windows Custom Themes

- Con il rilascio di Windows Vista e del suo scintillante tema Aero, la Microsoft ha voluto aumentare le possibilità di personalizzazione del suo sistema operativo da parte dell'utente. Infatti Aero, per quanto pesante, può essere customizzato sotto diversi aspetti, come ad esempio il colore delle interfacce. Resta il fatto che nè in XP, Vista o Seven risulta possibile applicare temi (o meglio stili di visualizzazione) personalizzati, se non rilasciati dalla stessa Microsoft.

La soluzione c'è, è semplice e non richiede l'installazione di programmi di styling (come WindowBlinds o StyleXP). Essa consiste nel sostituire alcuni file di sistema con file modificati appositamente per permettere l'uso di temi non rilasciati dalla casa produttrice. Dato che la procedura manuale risulta talvolta problematica, e non sempre alla portata di tutti, ecco un semplice programmino che patcherà automaticamente i file di sistema in questione:

Scaricare Universal Theme Patcher e scompattare l'archivio in una cartella qualunque. Andare al punto 2 se si possiede un sistema operativo a 32 bit. Andare al punto 4 se si possiede un sistema operativo a 64 bit.
Windows XP/Vista/7 32 bit: avviare UniversalThemePatcher-x86.exe e fare click su "Ok" nella schermata di selezione della lingua. Il programma riconoscerà il sistema operativo in uso e controllerà se i file di sistema siano già stati modificati. Fare click su "Si".
Nella schermata successiva, fare click su "Patch" per tutti i file di sistema disponibili (solo "uxtheme.dll" per XP, "uxtheme.dll" / "themeui.dll" / "shsvcs.dll" o "themeservice.dll" per Vista o 7). Andare al punto 7.
Windows XP/Vista/7 64 bit: avviare UniversalThemePatcher-x64.exe e fare click su "Ok" nella schermata di selezione della lingua. Il programma riconoscerà il sistema operativo in uso e controllerà se i file di sistema siano già stati modificati. Fare click su "Si".

Chiudere il programma e riavviare il computer.

Ora risulterà possibile applicare temi modificati al vostro Windows. Potete trovare temi di ogni colore e per ogni gusto cercando su Google. Nel caso in cui i file modificati generino problemi di vario tipo, sarà sufficiente utilizzare questo stesso programmino, clickando però su "Restore" per ogni file di sistema modificato, in modo da rimpiazzare i file modificati con quelli presenti inizialmente (salvati dal programma come backup).

But there's a very easy solution to this, which doesn't require the installation of programs like WindowsBlinds or StyleXP. We only need to replace some system files with patched files. Since the manual process is sometimes problematic, I'll show you a simple program that will automatically patch all of the required files:

Download Universal Theme Patcher and decompress the archive into any folder. Now proceed to point 2 if you have a 32 bit Windows edition. Go to point 4 if you have a 64 bit Windows edition.

Optional: if you still cannot apply custom visual styles, check if a Windows/Syswow64 folder exists. In this case you'll have to use UniversalThemePatcher-x86.exe to patch the files in that folder.
Close the program and restart the computer.

Now you should be able to use modified themes with Windows. You can find some by Googling "Windows Custom Themes" or similar. If you wish to revert the system to the previous state, you just have to use this program and click on "Restore" for every system file you patched.

HideApp - Hide your applications

- We often need to use applications which don't require any user input, but show bothersome interfaces or prompts. Yeah, I'm talking about batch files as well :)

As you know, it's impossible to completely hide these apps (they can just be minimized, but can't become invisible) without using other methods (javascript, vbscript etc.). HideApp is an utility coded in VB.net capable of generating shortcuts which will start your applications in background, thus without any on-screen console nor interface.

I tried to code this utility to be as light as possible, in order not to influence the app startup time. You'll just have to select the application you want to hide (with its command line arguments, if necessary) and HideApp will do its work.

Once you've installed HideApp, you'll be able to manually create these kind of shortcuts using this syntax for the shortcut's destination:

[HideApp.exe path][space]"[yourapp.bat path]"[space]"[parameters]"

For example, if HideApp is installed in C:\Program Files\HideApp, mybatch.bat is located in C:\Program Files and it needs the "/s" parameter, the destination will be:

C:\Program Files\HideApp\HideApp.exe "C:\Program Files\mybatch.bat" "/s"

When you double click the shortcut, mybatch.bat will be started in the background without showing the usual black command prompt. At the moment, HideApp supports .exe, .bat, .com, .js, .py and .vbs files. If you'd like more extensions to be added, leave a comment to this article and I'll include them in the next release.

- Spesso capita di dover utilizzare applicazioni che non richiedono alcun input da parte dell'utente, ma che mostrano fastidiose interfacce o prompt a schermo. Ad esempio ai più "smanettoni" spesso sarà capitato di creare file batch che eseguano automaticamente un dato compito, ma che una volta avviati mostravano quella noiosa console nera stile MS-DOS.

Come ben saprete, non è possibile nascondere del tutto questo genere di applicazioni (al massimo le si può minimizzare, ma questo non le rende "invisibili") senza sfruttare altri mezzi (javascript, vbscript etc.). HideApp è un'utility codificata interamente in VB.net in grado di generare collegamenti che avvieranno le vostre applicazioni in background, quindi senza alcuna interfaccia o console a schermo.

Ho cercato di codificare quest'utility in maniera più leggera possibile, in modo da non pesare affatto sui tempi di apertura delle applicazioni che si desidera nascondere. Basterà selezionare l'applicazione in questione (specificando gli eventuali parametri per riga di comando) ed HideApp creerà un collegamento in grado di avviarla in modalità "invisibile".

Una volta installato HideApp, sarà anche possibile creare questi collegamenti manualmente: basterà digitare come destinazione del collegamento il percorso di HideApp seguito da uno spazio e dal percorso dell'applicazione da rendere invisibile tra virgolette. Ad esempio, se HideApp è installato in C:\Programmi\HideApp, l'applicazione mybatch.bat si trova in C:\Programmi ed ha bisogno del parametro "/s", la destinazione del collegamento sarà:

C:\Programmi\HideApp\HideApp.exe "C:\Programmi\mybatch.bat" "/s"

Avviando il collegamento, mybatch.bat sarà avviato in background, senza mostrare il solito prompt nero tipico dei file batch. Al momento, HideApp supporta i file .exe, .bat, .com, .js, .py e .vbs. Se volete che aggiunga altre estensioni, lasciate un commento a questo articolo ed io vedrò di includerle nella prossima release.

- A file is "fragmented" when it's split over various sectors of the hard drive. Obviously, a fragmented file takes longer to be loaded, because the hard disk's head has to move multiple times in order to read all of the file fragments. Furthermore, every fragmented file wastes a part of the disk space, and the wasted free space is directly proportional to the file size. In the end, the higher number of head rotations will shorten the lifespan of the drive.

It's obvious that a hard drive containing a high number of fragmented files isn't efficient, and this will significantly influence the performance of the whole system. Therefore, it's recommended to defragment the disk with a certain frequency. Defragmentation utilities transform fragmented files into contiguous files (by putting all of the files fragments in adjacent sectors), reducing access time and recovering the space wasted by the various fragments.

Windows contains a good disk defragmentation utility, called Windows Disk Defragmenter. The GUI version (with graphical interface) of the tool, which can be started typing "dfrg.msc" without quotes in Start - Run, is very handy and user friendly, but not perfect:
- XP: doesn't allow the defragmentation of multiple units, neither simultaneously nor consecutively.
- Vista/7: files bigger than 64 mB won't be defragmented because their impact on system performance is less relevant than smaller files'.

If you need to defragment multiple hard drives or partitions (maybe doing something else in the meanwhile) or you want to have a well defragmented hard drive, you can try DefragDrives, an alternative to the standard Windows interface. It uses Windows defragmentation engine, so the performance is guaranteed. The latest version is v4.3. Here are the features of this release:

- Capable of defragmenting up to 10 units consecutively in normal or in-depth mode (three defragmentation instances on the same unit).
- Analysis function for the specified units, in normal or in-depth mode (with complete file fragmentation analysis report).
- "Create Batch" function will generate a batch file that will defragment (in normal or in-depth mode, depending on the chosen option) the selected units. Useful if you want to defragment your hard drives with a single click, or maybe create a scheduled task to defragment the specified units without any user input :)
- Vista/7: files bigger than 64 mB will be defragmented, unlike Vista/7's GUI defragmenter.
NOTE: files bigger than 64 mB will not be included in the defragmentation reports.
- Windows 7: if "In Depth" mode is selected, the program will consolidate the free space after the defragmentation.
- The system can be automatically shutdown on completion.
- The console can be visible or hidden depending on the user's preference.
- Italian or English languages can be selected inside the program.
- The user can select the standard or classic Windows interface.

To install DefragDrives you just have to extract the content of the .rar archive (appropriate to your operating system) to any folder you like. Languages (English or Italian) can be selected in the program options.

- Un file si dice "frammentato" quando è diviso su più settori dell'hard disk. Ovviamente per leggere un file frammentato occorre più tempo, in quanto la testina dell'hard disk dovrà spostarsi numerose volte per essere in grado di leggere tutti i frammenti del file. Tra l'altro, ogni file frammentato spreca una parte di spazio, che è direttamente proporzionale alla dimensione del file stesso. Infine, il maggior numero di movimenti della testina diminuirà la vita fisica dell'hard disk stesso.

Insomma, è ovvio che un hard drive contenente numerosi file frammentati è poco efficiente, e ciò inficerà in maniera consistente le prestazioni dell'intero sistema. Ecco perchè è consigliato effettuare la deframmentazione del disco con una certa frequenza. Le utilità di deframmentazione rendono contigui i file che prima erano frammentati (spostando tutti i frammenti su settori adiacenti), riducendone il tempo di accesso e recuperando lo spazio sprecato dai vari frammenti.

Windows possiede un'ottima utility per la deframmentazione dei dischi, chiamata Windows Disk Defragmenter. La versione GUI (con interfaccia grafica) dell'utility, richiamabile digitando "dfrg.msc" senza apici in Start - Esegui, è molto pratica ed intuitiva da usare, ma presenta alcuni difetti:
- XP: non è possibile deframmentare più di un disco per volta, nè simultaneamente nè consecutivamente.
- Vista/7: i file di dimensioni superiori ai 64 mB non verranno deframmentati, perchè si ritiene che non abbiano un impatto significativo sulle prestazioni.

Per chi, come me, ha bisogno di deframmentare più unità disco (magari facendo altro nel frattempo) o comunque pretende che il suo disco sia ben deframmentato, ho creato DefragDrives, un'alternativa all'interfaccia standard di Windows. Il motore di deframmentazione utilizzato è quello di Windows, quindi la prestazione è garantita. La versione più aggiornata è la 4.4. Eccone le caratteristiche:

- Possibilità di deframmentare fino a 10 unità consecutivamente in modalità normale o approfondita (tre istanze di deframmentazione consecutive sulla stessa unità).
- Funzione di analisi delle unità specificate, in modalità normale o approfondita (con rapporto completo di frammentazione dei file).
- Funzione "Crea Batch", che creerà un file bat in grado di deframmentare (in modalità normale o approfondita, a seconda dell'opzione selezionata) le unità specificate. Comodo per deframmentare le unità che ci interessano più di frequente in un solo click, o magari per creare un'operazione pianificata che deframmenti tali unità senza bisogno di alcun input da parte dell'utente :)
- Vista/7: verranno deframmentati anche i file di dimensioni superiori a 64 mB, al contrario della deframmentazione GUI di Vista/7.
NOTA: i file più grandi di 64 mB non saranno comunque inclusi nei rapporti di deframmentazione.
- Windows 7: se si seleziona la modalità "Approfondita", al termine della deframmentazione verrà eseguito il consolidamento dello spazio libero.
- Possibilità di spegnere automaticamente il sistema al termine della deframmentazione.
- Possibilità di visualizzare o meno l'output a console.
- Possibilità di selezionare la lingua Italiana o Inglese nelle opzioni programma stesso.

- IntelBurnTest è uno stress test basato sulle librerie LINPACK (utilizzate dalla stessa Intel per la valutazione di stabilità dei propri processori). Esso misura il potere di calcolo a virgola mobile del sistema, mediante la risoluzione di un complesso sistema di equazioni lineari. Anche se poco conosciuto, è da molti indicato come superiore a Prime95 o Orthos nella valutazione della stabilità di overclock.

Difatti IntelBurnTest è in grado di "torturare" il processore a livelli mai visti (le temperature sono ben superiori dopo 10 minuti di Linpack che dopo 2 ore di Orthos) e necessita di molto meno tempo dei benchmark tradizionali (10 minuti di IntelBurnTest contro 12+ ore di Orthos).

Il programma raccomanda l'uso di un sistema operativo a 64bit per risultati più accurati. Questo avviene perchè girando sotto un sistema a 32bit, esso sarà in grado di testare un massimo di 2 Gb di memoria fisica (data la limitazione a 2Gb per applicazione dei sistemi a 32bit), cosa che invece non avverrà per i sistemi a 64bit. Pertanto, se eseguito in 32bit, il programma testerà alla perfezione il processore, ma non le memorie. In questo caso, si raccomanda comunque un'ulteriore test con Prime95 o Orthos (che eseguendo due istanze di Prime95, sarà in grado di testare l'intera memoria disponibile).

Eccovi una guida su come utilizzare questo potentissimo tool a vostro favore.

GUIDA AD INTELBURNTEST

Scarichiamo ed estraiamo IntelBurnTest in una cartella qualunque.
Avviamo il programma. Vedremo un'interfaccia come quella in alto.
Selezioniamo uno dei cinque livelli di stress disponibili. Per testare a fondo la stabilità di overclock, selezioneremo il livello "Maximum".
Selezioniamo il numero di volte che il test verrà eseguito. Il programma raccomanda un valore di "5 o più". Io consiglio di far eseguire tra i 10 ed i 20 cicli per un risultato più accurato.
Lasciamo la casella "Threads" su "auto", in modo che sia l'applicazione a decidere quanti thread far eseguire in base al processore montato sul sistema in uso.
Clickiamo su "Start" ed attendiamo con pazienza che il test termini.
Una volta terminato il test, dovremo controllare che tutti i valori riportati sotto la colonna "Results" siano perfettamente identici. Se anche uno solo di questi valori dovesse risultare in disaccordo con gli altri, vorrà dire che il nostro sistema è instabile con le impostazioni correnti. Congelamenti, crash e schermate blu sono allo stesso modo segni di instabilità del sistema.

- IntelBurnTest is a stress test based on the LINPACK libraries (used by Intel to check their processors' stability). It measures the system's floating point computing power, through the resolution of a complex system of linear equations. Even if it's not that known, many overclockers consider it as superior to Prime95 or Orthos in overclock stability evaluation.

In fact, IntelBurnTest is capable of "torturing" the processor to unbelievable levels (temperatures are much higher after a 10 minutes Linpack than after 2 hours of Orthos) and needs much less time than traditional benchmarks (10 mins of IntelBurnTest vs 12+ hours of Orthos).

The program recommends the usage of a 64bit operative system for better results. That's because running under a 32bit OS, it will be able to test a maximum of 2 Gb of physical memory (given the 2Gb per application limit of 32bit systems). So, if executed in 32bit mode, the program will only test the CPU accurately, while you might need to run a further Prime95 or Orthos test to check the memories.

Here I'll explain how to use this powerful tool.

INTELBURNTEST GUIDE

Download and extract IntelBurnTest to any folder you like.
Start the program. You'll see an interface like the one in the picture above.
You'll be asked if you want to enable error detection. If you choose YES, the program will automatically tell you if the system is stable, else you'll have to analyze the results by yourself (see further below).
Select one of the five available stress levels. I strongly recommend to use the "Maximum" level.
Select how many times your CPU should run the test. The program recommends "5 or more", but my advice is to select a value of 10-20 in order to have a more accurate result.
Leave the "Threads" listbox to "Auto", in order to let the program decide the number of threads to execute basing itself on the CPU model.
Click on "Start" and patiently wait until the test is over.

Once the test is over, you'll have to check if all the "Results" values are perfectly the same. If even one of these values is different, then your system is unstable with the current settings. Freezes, crashes and BSODs are signs of an unstable system as well.

- Tutti noi ci saremo accorti, aprendo il Task Manager di Windows, che uno dei processi che occupano più memoria risulta essere "explorer.exe". Per chi già non lo sapesse, esso è il servizio che permette di visualizzare l'interfaccia grafica, comprendente barra delle applicazioni, icone, finestre etc.

Questo processo può occupare dalle decine alle centinaia di megabyte (se si installano particolari plugin di interfaccia), e rappresenta un grosso spreco di risorse quando, ad esempio, avviamo un gioco o una applicazione che non ha minimamente bisogno di explorer.exe per funzionare.

Potremmo terminare il programma dal Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Canc), ma poi risulterebbe seccante avviare l'applicazione che ci interessa dal Task Manager stesso (a causa della mancanza di interfacce). Per ovviare a questo problema, possiamo creare un file in batch che chiuda explorer ed avvii l'applicazione interessata in automatico. Ecco come fare:

Apriamo il Blocco Note.
Creiamo un file di testo con questa sintassi:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
cd [percorso applicazione]
start [eseguibile applicazione]

Ecco un esempio:
Salviamo il file con estensione ".bat".

Il comando "taskkill", unito ai parametri "/im" e "/f", forzerà la chiusura del processo avente nome immagine "explorer.exe".
Il comando "cd" ci permetterà di selezionare la directory in cui si trova l'applicazione da avviare.
Il comando "start" avvierà l'eseguibile da noi prescelto.

Ora ci basterà semplicemente avviare il file da noi creato per far sì che explorer.exe venga chiuso e venga avviata l'applicazione desiderata. All'uscita dall'applicazione, per visualizzare nuovamente explorer ci basterà aprire il Task Manager, cliccare su "Nuova operazione...", digitare "explorer.exe" e premere Invio.

- If you used the Windows Task Manager even once, you've surely noticed that "explorer.exe" is one of the most memory consuming processes. It's the service which allows the display of graphical interfaces, such as the applications bar, icons, windows etc.

This process can take up from ten to hundreds megabytes of memory (if you're running particular interface plugins), and it represents a huge waste of resources when, for example, we're running a game or an application which doesn't require explorer.exe to work properly.

We could kill the process from the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), but starting the desired application from the Task Manager would be pretty annoying (since you won't have interfaces anymore). To overcome this issue, we can create a batch file which will automatically close explorer and start the application we want. Here's how to do it:

Open the Notepad.
Create a new text file with this syntax:

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
cd [application directory]
start [application executable]

Here's an example:
Save the file as ".bat".

The "taskkill"command, with the "/im" and "/f" parameters, will force the process with image name "explorer.exe" to be killed.
The "cd" command will allow us to select the directory of the desired application.
The "start" process will start the executable.

Now we'll just have to run the file we created to kill explorer.exe and start the application we specified. When we quit the application, just open the Task Manager, click on "New Task...", type in "explorer.exe" and hit Enter to view the Windows interface again.

Il software permette la creazione di puntatori statici ed animati supportanti le trasparenze, quindi le possibilità sono limitate solo dalla vostra fantasia. Oltre all'editor in stile Photoshop, è possibile importare immagini e trasformarle in cursori. Ciò significa che potrete utilizzare software esterni per l'elaborazione a livello grafico, per poi importare l'immagine in Cursor Editor.

- ArtMoney è un editor di memoria: il programma è in grado di ricercare e manipolare i dati salvati temporaneamente nella RAM, permettendoci di forzare l'inserimento di nuovi dati all'interno della stessa.

Questo software è particolarmente utilizzato per "cheatare" nei videogames in assenza di "codici" preinseriti dalla casa produttrice, modificando valori di gioco (soldi, oggetti, punteggi etc.) altrimenti non accessibili.

Il bello è che può essere utilizzato con qualsiasi tipo di applicazione, anche se il funzionamento non è dei più intuitivi. La modifica dei dati richiede la ricerca della stringa di memoria che ci interessa, e la successiva eliminazione delle stringhe che non interessano, pertanto il processo può risultare dispendioso in termini di tempo (paragonandolo ai cheats veri e propri, che possono essere inseriti istantaneamente).

La versione freeware di ArtMoney (in Inglese) può essere scaricata sul sito artmoney.ru.

Data editing requires the search for the string we're interessed into, and the elimination of the strings we don't need. Therefore the process may result very lenghty (compared to real cheats, which can be used instantly).

- A-Patch è un piccolo programma rilasciato da un gruppo arabo di programmatori che lavorano parallelamente alla Microsoft. Esso ci permette delle possibilità di personalizzazione enormi a livello di interfacce, oltre a sbloccare diverse funzioni (rimozione limite trilli, aumento caratteri massimi per messaggio etc.) in modo da personalizzare a nostro piacimento uno dei programmi di messaggeria istantanea più popolari.

Al momento, purtroppo, la versione compatibile con Messenger 2009 è incompleta, e non permette la personalizzazione delle interfacce. I developer, comunque, sono a lavoro per la realizzazione di una release pienamente funzionante.

- Mentre si naviga sul web, il nostro browser crea una serie di file volti ad ottimizzare l'esperienza di browsing. File temporanei, cronologie, cookie e cache internet sono solo alcuni di questi.

Alla lunga, però, questi file potrebbero diventare davvero ingombranti (parlo anche di interi GigaByte), inficiando le prestazioni della nostra macchina. E' pertanto necessario tenere pulito il proprio hard drive dai file temp, ma rimuoverli manualmente risulta seccante e scomodo...

Ccleaner è un tool gratuito che ci permetterà di eliminare tutti gli ingombranti file di internet (internet cache, temporary internet files, cookies etc.) in una volta sola. Tra le applicazioni internet, sono supportati: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari e Chrome, oltre che Windows Live Messenger, Emule e molti altri. Ccleaner si occuperà anche dei file temporanei di altre applicazioni, come quelli creati dallo stesso sistema operativo Windows, da Office, da Nero etc.

Tra le altre funzioni, sono presenti un tool per la pulizia del registro dalle chiavi obsolete, ed un manager di installazione e startup.

IMPOSTARE CCLEANER

Ora vedremo come impostare Ccleaner al meglio in modo che effettui automaticamente una pulizia sicura dei file temporanei all'avvio di Windows.

Avviamo Ccleaner ed accediamo alla scheda "Pulizia", dove selezioneremo secondo le nostre preferenze quali siano i file che Ccleaner andrà a cancellare. Le opzioni di default sono consigliate alla stragrande maggioranza degli utenti.

Ora accediamo alla scheda "Opzioni": da qui andiamo in "Impostazioni" e ci assicuriamo che tutte le checkbox siano vuote, eccetto "Cerca automaticamente aggiornamenti per Ccleaner", che ci permetterà di mantenere il programma sempre aggiornato. Nel menù più in basso, assicuriamoci che sia selezionata l'opzione "Cancellazione Normale (Rapida)".

Sempre dalla scheda "Opzioni", andiamo in "Avanzate". Assicuriamoci che tutte le caselle siano disattivate, eccetto "Chiedi se salvare un backup dei problemi di registro".

Chiudiamo Ccleaner, scarichiamo e scompattiamo questo archivio (solo se abbiamo installato Ccleaner nella directory di default) contenente un file .reg creato appositamente da me. Aprendolo, verrà aggiunta una chiave al registro che permetterà a Ccleaner di aprirsi all'avvio, cancellare i file temporanei e chiudersi automaticamente. Se siete diffidenti nell'utilizzare file .reg scaricati, o avete installato Ccleaner in un'altra cartella, allora potete modificare il registro manualmente: start-esegui-regedit; [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]; Nuovo-Valore Stringa; Nome valore: Ccleaner Auto; Dati valore: ["C:\Programmi\Ccleaner\Ccleaner.exe" /AUTO] (apici compresi, parentesi quadre escluse. Cambiamo il percorso in base alla directory di installazione).

Riavviamo il computer.

Il settaggio ottimale di Ccleaner è terminato! Al riavvio vedrete che il programma si aprirà automaticamente (sarà visibile in tray) e farà il suo "sporco lavoro" senza richiedere un minimo di input da parte dell'utente, per poi chiudersi senza lasciare traccia.

But these files could become so many (occupying Gigabytes of HD space) that they could lower the performance of our machine. Therefore, it's necessary to keep our system clean from temporary files, but removing them manually is indeed annoying.

Ccleaner is a free tool which allows the deletion of internet files (internet cache, temporary internet files, cookies etc.) in just one click. It supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome, as well as Windows Live Messenger, Emule and many more. Ccleaner will even take care of temporary files created by other applications, such as the same Windows, Office, Nero etc.

Among the other functions, it contains a registry cleaning tool and an installation and startup manager.

CCLEANER SETTINGS

Now we'll see how to change the settings in order to let it clean automatically all of the temporary files at Windows startup.

Open Ccleaner and change the preferences about the files to delete from the "Cleaner" tab. Default settings are more than appropriate for most users.

Now open the "Options" tab, and click on "Settings". Make sure every checkbox is unchecked, besides "Automatically check for updates to Ccleaner", in order to keep the program updated. Make sure "Normal file deletion (faster)" is selected.

From the same "Options" tab, click on "Advanced". Make sure every checkbox is unchecked, besides "Show prompt to backup registry issues".

Close Ccleaner, open the registry editor (start-run-regedit) and add this entry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]; New-String; Name:Ccleaner auto (or whatever you like it to be named) Value:["C:\Program Files\Ccleaner\Ccleaner.exe" /AUTO] (without brackets).

Restart the computer.

We're done with settings! At the next startup, you'll see the program opening (it will be visible in the tray) and doing its "dirty work" without requiring any user input, and when it's done it will close automatically.

- Ottimo antimalware prodotto dalla Malwarebytes. Permette l'indiduazione e la disinfezione da virus, spyware, rootkit, worms e altri malware in generale.

Posso dire per esperienza personale che Malwarebytes è probabilmente il miglior anti malware free in circolazione, ma ne consiglio l'uso in accoppiamento ad un antivirus free come Avira, AVG etc., in quanto la versione free non offre la protezione attiva, ma solo la possibilità di effettuare scansioni veloci o complete su uno o più dischi.

In compenso, il motore di scansione euristica antirootkit è estremamente rapido ed efficace, ed è in grado di individuare possibili falsi allarmi e malware non ancora in database con maggiore efficienza.

Proteggete il vostro sistema!

By my personal experience, I can say that Malwarebytes is probably the best free anti-malware around, but I suggest to use it with another free antivirus (like Avira or AVG), since the free version doesn't provide an active guard, but only the possibility to make fast or complete scans on one or more disks.

Luckily, its antirootkit heuristic scan engine is extremely fast and effective, and it's even capable of finding possible fakes and not yet known malware more efficiently.

Opera 9 vs Firefox 3

- Dopo aver vinto il duello assolutamente impari con Microsoft Internet Explorer, i due finalisti Opera e Firefox si scontrano in quello che si preannuncia un duello memorabile. Chi ne uscirà a testa alta? Chi otterrà il titolo di miglior Web Browser?

In realtà è difficile stabilire un vero vincitore, perchè l'uno eccelle in aspetti in cui l'altro è discretamente dotato e viceversa. Da notare l'uso dell'espressione "discretamente dotato", in quanto in realtà nessuno dei due programmi ha dei seri punti deboli. Sono entrambi due ottimi browser, che sapranno servire ogni tipologia di utente. Avviamo ed analizziamo i due browser passo passo:

STARTUP: avviando i due browser "a freddo", ovvero per la prima volta dopo aver acceso la macchina, colpisce subito il lungo periodo di caricamento da parte di Firefox, che si attesta sulle 2-3 volte superiore ad Opera. Evidentemente sul browser norvegese è stata effettuata un'ottimizzazione più minuziosa rispetto a quanto fatto dai developer della volpe.

UTILIZZO MEMORIA: anche qui Opera risulta il vincitore, occupando meno memoria di Firefox a parità di pagine aperte. La codifica meticolosa del norvegese fa i miracoli anche sotto questo punto di vista.

INTERFACCIA: inizialmente l'interfaccia di Opera sembra più funzionale e minimalista di quella di Firefox, ma la volpe ha dalla sua una possibilità di personalizzazione incredibile, che ci permette persino di avere tutte le funzioni base su una sola barra degli strumenti, ampliando lo spazio disponibile per la visualizzazione delle pagine.

VELOCITA' DI CARICAMENTO: il vincitore è Opera, con velocità di caricamento, download ed elaborazione di Java e CSS superiori a Firefox nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi.

RENDERING PAGINE: Firefox renderizza le pagine in maniera più "flessibile" di Opera, che resta invece intollerante alle pratiche meno "ortodosse" nella codifica. Pertanto, la visualizzazione di alcune pagine è più precisa in Firefox.

SICUREZZA: entrambi i browser hanno fatto passi da gigante sotto quest'aspetto, rimediando alle falle tuttora aperte in Internet Explorer. Il blocco dei popup in Firefox è leggermente più efficiente di quello incluso in Opera. Inoltre, la volpe si appoggia a numerosi servizi esterni per stabilire ed indicare come tali i siti web potenzialmente pericolosi.

ALTRE FUNZIONI: oltre ad essere un web browser, Opera contiene un client email (Opera Mail) dotato di filtro antispam, ed un client torrent, che rende superfluo l'uso di software esterni.

A conti fatti, i due browser sono praticamente equivalenti. La scelta dipende esclusivamente dalle preferenze dell'utente: se si cerca un browser veloce e leggero, la scelta cadrà su Opera; se invece si prediligono funzionalità e sicurezza, non si può far altro che scegliere Firefox. Valutate accuratamente cosa cercate dal vostro browser, e scegliete la soluzione che più fa per voi.

- After winning the absolutely one-sided fight with Microsoft Internet Explorer, the two finalists Opera and Firefox clash in a memorable duel. Who will come out on top? Who will obtain the title of best Web Browser?

Actually, it's hard to choose a real winner, because one outstrips the other in some aspects and viceversa. Notice that none of the two programs has serious weak points. They are both good browsers, which will serve any kind of user. Now, let's start and analyze the two browsers step-by-step:

STARTUP: when we start the two browsers for the first time in the session, we notice Firefox's impressive loading time, about 2-3 times longer than Opera's. The Norwegian browser is clearly more optimized than the fox.

MEMORY USAGE: Opera is the winner, because its meticulous coding allows it to use less memory than Firefox with the same pages open.

INTERFACE: at first sight Opera's interface looks more functional than Firefox's, but the fox can be incredibly customized, even allowing us to have all of the main functions in a single toolbar, in order to extend the pages' visualization space.

LOAD SPEED: Opera's load, download and css/java rendering speed is higher than Firefox's in most cases.

PAGE RENDERING: Firefox is more elastic than Opera when it comes at rendering, because the Norwegian is less permissive towards uncommon or incorrect html lines. Therefore, Firefox is more precise in the visualization of non-correctly coded pages.

SECURITY: both have improved a lot in this aspect, and they're surely much more secure than Internet Explorer. Firefox's popup blocker is a tad more efficient than Opera's. Plus, the fox exploits a lot of external services to block potentially dangerous websites.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: Opera also includes an email client (Opera Mail) with antispam filter, and a torrent client, so you don't need to install anything more for your web experience.

As you can see, the two browsers are pratically equivalent. The choice is only up to user's preferences: if you're looking for a fast and light browser, Opera will be your choice; if you prefer functionality and security, then you have to choose Firefox. - Più che un vero e proprio gioco, Phun è un simulatore fisico. Questa applicazione, insomma, riporta fedelmente (o quasi) le leggi fisiche che regolano la realtà all'interno di un mondo virtuale bidimensionale.

Inutile dire che le possibilità sono immense, e vanno dalla realizzazione di meccanismi in grado di muoversi, sospensioni a molla e cannoni, fino a razzi ad autopropulsione, motori funzionanti con il ciclo di Carnot e pompe idrauliche...

Le possibilità sono limitate soltanto dalla vostra fantasia. Phun, pertanto, è in grado di fornire un buon quantitativo di intrattenimento, che siate o no amanti della fisica.

Vi consiglio di cercare video realizzati con Phun su YouTube per farvi un'idea delle potenzialità di questo simulatore. Have Phun!

- OpenOffice è una completissima suite di software da ufficio, rilasciata da Sun Microsystems (creatrice, tra l'altro, del linguaggio Java), comprendente:

Writer, un potente word processor.
Impress, tool per la creazione di presentazioni multimediali.
Calc, programma per la creazione di fogli elettronici.
Base, un DBMS per l'elaborazione di basi di dati.
Draw, un basilare software di disegno.

A che prezzo? Assolutamente gratis! OpenOffice è la prima suite da ufficio open source, quindi a licenza d'uso libera. Potrete scaricare ed installare OpenOffice su quante postazioni volete, senza dovervi preoccupare di eventuali problemi legali provocati da licenze a pagamento.

In più, è rilasciato per lavorare sulla maggior parte dei sistemi operativi (LISTA DELLE VERSIONI) ed è totalmente compatibile con Microsoft Office.

Indubbiamente la suite rilasciata da Microsoft è più completa e funzionale, ma per chi non vuole spendere circa 450€ per l'acquisto del recente Office 2007, OpenOffice rappresenta sicuramente l'alternativa gratuita più valida.

Video Card Overclocking Guide - Part 3 (Ati Tool - Ntune)

ATITOOL

Se la vostra scheda ATI non fosse supportata da Rivatuner, provate Atitool. Questo programma gestisce anche alcune schede Nvidia, ma per queste ultime consiglio caldamente Rivatuner. Questa è l'interfaccia AtiTool:

Come si può vedere è possibile impostare le frequenze in maniera molto intuitiva, e creare profili di overclock nell'angolo in alto a sinistra.

I pulsanti "Find Max Core" e "Find Max Mem" permettono di individuare le massime frequenze di core e memoria possibili. Sconsiglio l'uso di queste funzioni perchè portano spesso al freeze del computer, rendendo necessario il riavvio.

La vista 3D permette di visualizzare un cubo rotante che stresserà la vostra scheda. Molto comodo per far lavorare la GPU ed avere un'idea approssimativa delle temperature di esercizio.

Il pulsante "Scan for Artifacts" apre la vista 3D e blocca la rotazione del cubo, permettendo di eseguire una scansione dei difetti grafici che l'overclock della vostra scheda video potrebbe aver prodotto. In genere, una scansione di un'oretta senza difetti evidenti è indice di buona stabilità di overclock.

Il pulsante "Settings" nell'angolo in basso a destra permette di regolare diverse impostazioni riguardanti l'overclock, la scansione difetti ed altro. Per informazioni dettagliate su queste impostazioni, visitare il sito www.techpowerup.com.

Anche con questo software procedete a passi di 5mhz/20mhz/5-10mhz per core, shader e memoria. Fate uno "Scan for Artifacts" con HwMonitor avviato per assicurarvi che l'overclock non abbia prodotto difetti grafici rilevabili e che la temperatura non salga di troppo. Un bel 3DMark vi darà come al solito i risultati dell'overclock.

NTUNE

Se Rivatuner risulta un po' "ostico" o "poco familiare", potreste provare Ntune. Questa tweaking utility è elaborata direttamente dalla Nvidia e presenta un'interfaccia davvero user-friendly. E' possibile accedere ad Ntune (dopo averlo installato) dal Pannello di Controllo Nvidia, sotto la scheda "Prestazioni".

- Scheda "Regola Impostazioni GPU"

Dalla scheda "Regola Impostazioni GPU" è possibile aumentare le frequenze a cui operano GPU e memorie. La frequenza dello shader è "linkata" a quella della GPU, ed aumenterà automaticamente. Peccato, perchè in genere gli shader possono essere aumentati ben più della GPU.

Per selezionare le frequenze desiderate, basta clickare su "Frequenze di Clock Personalizzate". Le barre diventeranno attive e permetteranno di mettersi all'opera. Dopo aver impostato una frequenza, clickiamo sul tasto "Test" per controllare se la nostra scheda sarebbe stabile con tali impostazioni (NB: per "stabile" si intende che il sistema non va in crash. Potrebbero comunque presentarsi artefatti o difetti grafici di vario tipo. Consiglio pertanto di testare personalmente le frequenze con il caro vecchio 3DMark e qualche oretta di gioco).

E' possibile inoltre regolare la velocità a cui opera la ventola della GPU. Se presente, l'aumento di tale valore è caldamente consigliato, per permettere un miglior raffreddamento della scheda.

Per rendere effettive le modifiche, clickiamo sul tasto "Applica".

- Scheda "Metti a Punto Sistema"

Dalla scheda "Metti a Punto Sistema" è possibile far ricercare allo stesso Ntune le frequenze stabili massime a cui può lavorare la nostra scheda. Durante il test, il sistema andrà probabilmente in crash rendendo necessario il riavvio. Ntune prevede questa possibilità, e permette di spuntare una checkbox che farà riprendere il test subito dopo il riavvio.

Personalmente, sconsiglio questa operazione perchè darà come risultato le frequenze massime a cui la scheda può lavorare senza crashare il sistema, essendo impossibile calcolare a priori i difetti e gli artefatti che potrebbero presentarsi con un uso più prolungato.

- Scheda "Definisci Regole Personalizzate"

Dalla scheda "Definisci Regole Personalizzate" è possibile impostare delle azioni che Ntune effettuerà ogni qual volta vengano soddisfatte alcune condizioni (IF... THEN...). ESEMPI: avviare un certo profilo di overclock all'avvio di Windows; modificare la velocità della ventola ad X% al raggiungimento di una data temperatura; avviare un profilo di overclock all'esecuzione di un'applicazione etc.

Questa sezione è più indicata agli utenti più esperti. Sconsiglio pertanto la modifica di qualsiasi "regola", se non di quella che imposta il nostro profilo di overclock all'avvio di Windows (che, tra l'altro, viene modificata automaticamente dal programma quando scegliamo le frequenze desiderate nella scheda "Regola Impostazioni GPU").

Anche con questo software procedete a passi di 5mhz/20mhz/5-10mhz per core, shader e memoria. Effettuate un 3DMark per constatare i risultati e giocate ad un videogame che metta sotto torchio la VGA, tenendo HwMonitor in esecuzione, per dare un occhio alle temperature.
